Tony Allen Update
The official word on Tony Allen, according to Ed Lacerte, is a torn ACL, torn medial meniscus and torn lateral meniscus.
Meanwhile, the word according to Brian Scalarbine is a "bruised meniscus and a sprained MCL", and he will be re-evaluated in seven days.

what about are already piss poor record combined with the fact that all of our players are injured suggest a pick as low as 3-6? I wouldnt be surprised if we dont win again for 2 months. By then we will be in all out tank mode. We are lookin at Oden or Durant.

OK here we are:
Telfair, Rondo
Dwest, GG, (Ray)
Gomes, GG
Big Al, Powe
Perk, Kandi,
240 minutes divided by 10 = 24 minutes apiece; kandi don’t need that much and Ray don’t deserve that much…but DOC, please, please, please…PLAY THE YOUTH/ DEVELOP THE YOUTH!!!

Man, that sucks so much for Tony. Just when he was really starting to turn it around too.. I feel like crying. This season has just gone down the drain completely.

It’s pretty unbelievable as to how this house of cards has blown of the table. I hate to see this happen to anyone. Get well soon, TA.

Whatever team is the “survivor” winning the pathetic Atlantic will be the “biggest loser”. That team will only be an “apprentice” for the likes of Detroit, Cleveland, Orlando, etc. They will be out of the playoffs in what will seem like “60 minutes”, and I don’t need “20-20” vision or a “dateline” to know that.
With Allen going down I don’t see us making the playoffs at all. This is the perfect time to replace the coach and get a Scott Skiles type of coach in here to get us fundamentally ready for 07-08. So, trade Wally or if you can’t have Donald Trump buy out his contract and Rosie O’Donnel can do the same for Doc’s contract. Let the youth movement and the new coach era begin in earnest.

You know who I don’t like? Atlanta. Every year they pretty much get a top 3 pick, and every year they suck A$$. Not saying we’re a whole lot better, but we’ve had major injuries and still have a better record than them. I’m sick of them being allowed in the league, they have no devoted fan base, no definitive ownership, no real future… They should be removed from the draft.
In other news, yeah the Tony news sucks. Can anyone with medical experience please elaborate on the tear and what it means?
TA will be back, but it is a shame. I think why people gravitated toward him (and Ricky for that matter) has to do with body language and energy. They’re ‘up’ guys.
I hope Gomes shifts to the 3 and we get to see more Leon.

Wyc Grousbeck was the guest on Chad Ford’s Daily Dish if anyone’s interested.

Cos, thanks for the update on Wyc talk, but I am “tuning off” Doc, Danny and Wyc until changes are made. It doesn’t matter what they “say” it is what’s getting “done”.
I watched the whole Portland game and Danny sat in for a very long spell with the announcers. To hear him talk about Doc, you would have thought we had UCLA’s John Wooden reincarnated into Doc Rivers. A good coach would have this team more “fundamentally sound” than it is on both ends of the court. You cannot use “overachieving Celtic team” and “Doc Rivers” in the same sentence. Danny did the same type of thing, any good play seemed to be for Doc’s credit, any poor play he was blaming the individual player. Sorry Danny but it can’t be the players’ fault all the time.
We are 12-22 my friends. You take away the 6 wins against the other bottom feeders in the NBA and our record stands at 6-22. There are many good fundamental basketball coaches out there. I have no idea for example who Jerry Sloan’s assistant is in Utah, but I would probably hire a guy like that on the spot the way Sloan and he"overachieve" year in and year out.
It unfortanately is going to take the Celtic faithful to hit management in the wallet or they will not make this coaching change.
Celtic management from the top down to Danny sing high praises of Doc and claim Doc is staying the whole year. I have my faults with Danny too on the Minny trade and this past draft. I will not become a hapless Chicago Cub type fan and just enjoy the confines of Boston Garden (Wrigly Field). Celtic fans deserve a better product than what Wyc, Danny and Doc have provided. Keeping Doc will just further delay the development of our youngsters. If they don’t can Doc by the All Star break, it is going to be another mistake by this club, just like this past draft, just like the Minny trade.

“Grow up. Allen will recover from this and be ready for training camp next year” – Brickowski
I hope that is true, but I’m not sure that it is. I am the furthest thing from an expert on this, but I am pretty sure that ACL tears can be fully recovered from or they can be career altering injuries — perhaps someone can eloaborate on the variables that effect the degree of long-term impact. It would seem to me that Tony’s ‘hops’ are essential for his game (we saw how he played when he seemed not quite there yet). If he can’t come back 100%, TA’s career may have suffered a blow tantamount to a knockout punch. I wish him the best.
On the bright side, I am preparing myself to hop aboard the ‘play the youngs’ bandwagon. I don’t think Doc has much of a choice — I think it couldn’t be clearer that this year is now all about getting game experience for the youth and adding a great pick in the 2007 draft. There is every reason to believe now that we are heading for a top 3 pick.
The one thing I regard as less important than most things I read is how Doc has done a good job “keeping the team morale up” despite our record or “the mood is very good” even if we are losing.
First of all, on every NBA team, there are at least 3 unhappy players thinking they sould be getting more minutes than we they are getting. It isn’t team morale that will make you a winner. As Lakers, Shaq/Kobe hated each other yet they won crowns. Dennis Rodman was not a team first player, yet the Pistons won crowns.
Playing tough man to man/team defense, switching on the picks, designing good X and O plays, making responsible coaching rotations, teaching fundamentals, etc, etc take priority over feel good locker rooms.
Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth hated each other, yet year after year after year the Yanks won the World Series. Enough brass talk, enough team gets along talk under Doc. Either you “gots it” or you don’t and under Doc this team doesn’t have it to be winners. Why prolong the inevitable end of season firing? Make the coaching change now, especially without Pierce, Allen, Wally, West, Scal, Theo in the line up. We are lottery bound, let’s at least “build” with a responsible coach.

Brick, Im with you in that Tony was to be gone as part of any trade the Celts might make. He only had value as trade fodder. After the injury he is now even called the “emotional leader” of the team. Can you believe that? All this time I thought we had no leader not even PP: Could all this be the result of guilty conciences trying to make up for having considered Tony only trade fodder?
Curious to see any analysis/examples of how athletes recover from ACL surgery. I could use some reall success stories. I heard Powe was mentioned in same breath as Lebron before he tore his ACL. I love him now, but imagine him with Tony Allen type qucikness and hops..

Ok, I’m no doc, not even a nurse, but I blew out my left ACL 10 yrs ago. I did A LOT of research about knee injuries & elected NOT to have it rebuilt, as I am not even close to the world class athlete most NBA guys are. While my knee still bothers me from time to time, I lead a normal life, & even play hoops once in a while. FYI, there was this QB in the NFL who did the same thing. He blew out his knee in high school, did not have surgery, yet still went on to have a decent career. He was pretty mobile too. Some of ya might remember him – his name was John Elway.
That said, 99% of most pro athletes choose to do the surgery to rebuild the knee after this kinda injury. Typical recovery time is 8-12 months. The 6 months is optimistic & TA would be rushing things to get back in that time – think of Dolphins QB Dante Culpepper this yr, cuz that’s what he did, & he sucked. So, 8-12 months, but he won’t be close to his old self for till about 18 – & this assumes no further injuries or setbacks, of course.
The big thing that concerns me is, & most fans, is not whether TA can come back (cuz he can), but what kinda player he’ll be upon returning to 100%. He’ll probably have lost a step, which really sucks cuz so much of his game is predicated on altheticism, speed, & explosiveness. Knee injuries sure have a way of limiting what u can do in regards to all 3 of those traits.
Although TA is far from a perfect player, we need more guys w/ his kinda attitude – fearless, relentless, & higly competitive. Sure, the C’s suck, & our season is a throw away. But now is the time to see of DA & Doc r right about the guys we have.
Lastly, I would just like to add my meager voice to all those wishing Tony a speedy recovery. These recent games since TA exploded on us were great, regardless of the record. We’ll miss u Tony, get well soon. 8)
bceltfan – you make many good points. I’ll give you a Tommy point.
I sense a media campaign to pump up Doc is starting, with all of this “good for the team morale” talk.
Next year Doc is a lame duck in his contract. In the final contract year, you either extend a coach or fire the coach. Otherwise the team assumes the coach is on the outs, and you start losing players.
It will be telling what happens shortly after this season. If Doc is not gone quickly, that’s not a good sign.
I think Danny may be stubborn enough to stick with this awful coach, the “I’ll show everyone” type of thinking.

This is very sad about Tonay Allen. I really feel for him. The kid was starting to really come on. He can come back; it will be a tough road but I think he’ll do it.
by fiddlesNdiddles on Jan 12, 2007 5:34 AM EST reply actions
From a completely non-emotional strict basketball standpoint, we’re going to miss his defense most of all. I think he was our most lock down defender and if you look at the guys that he was playing recently and the nights that they were having you can see why. Offensively he is a slasher with a really quick first step. When Pierce returns, that role will be filled by him.
Success story? Al Harrington tore his ACL playing against the Cs a few years ago, and he was the number one free agent on the market last year. Vince Carter will be the biggest name on the free agent market this year, and same thing. Let’s see – Edgerrin James, Jamal Lewis and Willis McGahee all came back from torn ACL’s. So did Carson Palmer. It sucks for Tony, but with modern technology it’s definitely possible to make a full(or at least 99 percent) recovery.
by Cullain on Jan 12, 2007 5:19 PM EST reply actions
We’ve gotten the diagnosis on Allen but I haven’t seen or heard a prognosis of his recovery. All the comments here seen to be about the torn ACL but Tony has both a Torn ACL and MCL. That’s one I’ve never heard of before. Does anyone know of any other players that have torn both and how they fared after healing?
We all know Doc is an idiot. I wish DA would take a look and see what we the fans see. Since he has been here we lose close games. That is coaching or lack there of!
Rondo should start, though he may not have played well in the first half against Detroit. He has more long term potential than Telfair. He is a better defender, and better passer. He has better ball handling skills. He will need time to develop his outside shot, and he finishes better the Telfair. If you notice when he is in the game the Celtics play better ball.
I watch Telfair he doesn’t pass into the post. When he does he seems more willing to give it to Perk than Al. If Rondo got to play with Al more your talking about some easy hoops because unlike Telfair Rondo pushes the ball up the court Telfair doesn’t. He walks it up to play half court. Green would also benefit with more easy baskets just from running. Doc may see something in practice but we see it in games when it counts. We all know when the injured players come back our young guys will again sit. That is unfortunate as they are the future of this team. Guys like Wally, Scal are not and I wish were gone.
