Hate To Say I Told You So
Here's what I said before the game:
I expect the Celtics to play inspired, gutsy basketball. I expect Al Jefferson and Gerald Green to bounce back with better games. And I expect the Pistons will keep the Celtics at arms distance the whole game before throttling it up a notch in the 4th quarter. And of course, I expect the C's to lose.
The team played inpired ball, staying close the whole game. Jefferson had a career high 22 rebounds and 12 points. Gerald had a season high 24 points. And the Pistons put it away in the 4th. The Celtics actually played better than I expected, but the result was the same.
It was an encouraging game from a future standpoint. It is great to see Al Jefferson and Gerald Green play like that. It just wasn't enough against a tough, veteran team like the Pistons.

Good gutsy game! Remember though Pistons are playing poorly of late too. They lost 3 out of their last 4 including to Atlanta at home and at Charlotte. They were without Billups too.

Is it a coincidence we roll out the Boston Celtics Mass Lotto tickets the same season we decide to tank for the Lottery?
Also, remember, Gerald Green is missing his ring finger. All signs lead to improbable success. Number 17 in 2 years. All sorts of ESPN stories about how Gerald smithies a gold FINGER to put his gold ring on.

you forgot to mention that you and everyone of us also knew Rondo was obviously going to get limited minutes after his scorcher yesterday. And he did, and in his minutes if the website I am looking at is right he goes for 4, 5, and 3 and a steal in 12 minutes. meanwhile Bassy goes 4 for 14 and has 9, 1 and 5 and a block in 24 minutes.
This bs will never end until Doc is gone. The man is an idiot and by the way its time to allow cussing on this site. How about we make Valentines Day the day we can all say what we want?
:-\ The C’s lost to the veteran Pistons teams without old friend Chaucey billups. They were competitive but couldn’t deliver down the stretch. Several C’s had career nights.
Pluses: 8 blocks, 16 PF’s
Minuses: Only 14 assts > bad FG %. Only 14 FT attempts. Terrible 3 pt percentage.
Bottomline: Its nice the youngons are getting experience. Hopefully this will help next year. When is Delonte coming back?

If the rest of the season isn’t devoted to developing the youth and giving them major playing time minutes than this franchise doesn’t have a clue.
It will be very interesting to see how the minutes get distributed once Scal and Wally start playing again.

The Cs fought well and despite the lose I feel like the optomistic birthday boy.
If you hadn’t heard the story, the boy is celebrating his 7th birthday and he’s always optimistic on everything in life. Well, his step dad decides to teach him a lesson and the night before he piles a whole bunch of horses*** in the garage.
The boy wakes up and is all exicted, starts running laps around the garage. The step dad asks how he can be so happy, and the boy says, “With all this manure there has to be a horse around here somewhere”.

Detroit even missing Billups is still a team in its prime, except for R. Wallace who I thought Jefferson outplayed for the first time. Green needs to have more plays set up for him because many of the remaining players are too inconsistant with the outside shots, such as Telfair, Gomes, Ray etc. I can see the team drafting a full size power forward and a center. Enough of the tweeners no matter how spirited they are.
ehhh…
There’s little silver lining. There’s always SOMEONE who’ll step up and score 20 …if it’s Rondo we figure it’s just a abberation, Green and it’s progress.
We got BIG problems

Danny’s just got to look at the W-L vs. the scoring averages (what we score vs. what we give up) to see Doc is a HUGE problem.
Before tonight’s game, Miami, Toronto, NY, and Portland all had a worse scoring average differential than we do, but they all had more wins. In ‘05-’06, Utah, Seattle, NO/OK, and Houston were outscored by more on average than we were and all finished w/ better records.
Couple those facts with the absymal two-year record in games decided by 5 pts. or less and it’s DEFINITELY a reflection on the in-game coaching by Doc.
Why is Danny sticking with this guy? Are G$ and Al better b/c of Doc or would they progressing faster w/ another coach (look at Andrew Bynum in LA under Phil Jackson!)? I know the team is playing hard right now, but that has much to do w/ a chance to prove they belong in the NBA as anything.

I guess by playing Telfair so much, the C’s are learning about what they have. Which despite some glimpses of a bright future, largely I’m starting to think Telfair simply is not that good, and he certainly doesn’t have the same potential of Rondo (had to love that high-off the glass lefty finger roll last night! )

How in the world does Doc sit Rondo down the final 6 minutes of that game? Telfair couldn’t hold Flip Murray’s jock.
HOW DOES DOC NOT SEE THAT RONDO SHOULD START AND GET THE MAJORITY OF PG MINUTES ON THIS TEAM? (over Bassy AND West)
Telfair offers virtually nothing. Defensively, he’s just horrible – and not just one-on-one against other PG’s. He’s constantly taken advantage of on switches because of his lack of size.

One can be happy with Gerald Green’s offensive performance but a quick check of the stat sheet is a sober reminder that he’s a long way away from a “franchise” player. Let’s hope that as his offensive performance matures, so also will his all-around skills show a similar progression.
At this point in their respective development, Granger seems to have been a wiser pick by Indiana. What can be said of the other 16 teams that passed on both Green and Granger?

When its true its true …to keep thing objective…..
Bankshot im talking to U
Telfair 1 / Rondo 1
;D
Oh. well Im happy for AJ
and kind of for GG, he has to control more his jumpshot
but hes working a LOT out of screens and thats just great
Now….
This team is hell fun to watch and at least they didnt look lost
for Rondo to start “we literally have to wait for Telfair to get injured” Not necessarily even then: Ray can shoot (lol)!

rondo wasn’t doing a very good job directing the offense last night. telfair, at least, had a nice 1st quarter. when the two of them are on the floor at the same time, i think they move the ball around pretty well… but against the pistons i don’t think doc thought they could do that. telfair has to cover someone.. and if he can’t cover murray, you certainly couldn’t put him on prince or hamilton.
it was the pistons – did anyone expect the anything less than most of the c’s having ugly stat lines?
nice to see al rebounding well on the defensive end.
nice to see gerald look more comfortable.
moving on…

Very much surprised no one is mentioning Perkins poor performance. Frankly he is a liability on offense. If this is due to his foot problems then he shouldnt be playing. There was one play close to the end of the 4 quarter when we were 2 pts. behind and Perks grabs an offensive rbound near the basket and instead of putting it back he puts the ball in the floor and of course he looses it. At best he a 3rd string back up center.
by flyfisher on Jan 14, 2007 10:29 AM EST reply actions
I agree with flyfisher. Didn’t see last night’s game but was at Toronto game. Perk is a proud young man, easy to like. But he is not ready for prime time NBA minutes. His lack of development is why I’m OK with going for the ping pong balls. We need a center with starting potential. But I was wrong with Tony Allen earlier this year so maybe Doc and staff will bring him around. But right now…he stinks. Gerald stunk vs Toronto too but last night was good. That is youth finding its way. Do not give up on Telfair. While Rondo was superb against Toronto, Telfair showed his shooting skill. Both are keepers and I agree the playing time now should be 50/50.
I don’t mind Perk playing as long as he ins’t eating up ALs mins. He really doesn’t hurt you all that much(but yes, he isn’t exactly a TD down in the post)and keeps AL from guarding the opposing center. I love a big line up where Big AL gets to play power-forward.
-Big AL will benefit more than anyone when PP comes back to play. Gerald did surprised my last night with his shooting…good
-I think we can all agree the DWest is a better pg at this point in his career than Telfair or Rondo
-Wally will probably still come off the bench(which doesn’t mean much cause he still going to get 35mins/gm while GG gets 15-20mins)
-Allen Ray is a scorer and we should keep him around
-I really love Powe. You can tell he is in. He is always around the basket creating havoc.
…but in the end, Doc is not a good coach. I know he ain’t got much to work with, but enven before the injuries I think this team was underacheaving and mostly due to poor substitutions and lack of a system(both, offensively and defensively)
my god we still have Bassy defenders. And not one of them has actually gone to a game. Have fun going and falling off your chair watching the kid miss lay ups in practice. You’ll have a real eye opener, wathcing Rondo do the same move aqnd make everything.
Those of us who aren’t idiots and care deeply about the Celts have nothing left to do but hope that the miracle occurs and Doc is gone, DA drafts a future star pf/c to team with Al, and DA does whatever he has to get rid Wally, Scal, Bassy and bring in a good veteran point to BACK UP Rondo.
This will leave us with a nine man rotation of stars or good back ups and we will win it all soon enough: Draft pick c/f, Al, Perk, Powe, Tony, Rondo, PP, Green, back up point picked up. The guys will all fit like a perfect puzzle. Its obvious. Al, Green, Tony, and Rondo will all be all stars, its only obvious. There is no need for a bunch of gusy we currently have. Tony will come back.
If you are going to have patience with Rondo, why not have patience with Telfair. They both have very different skillsets and in my opinion are big upgrades over the pgs of the last few years. Be happy that we have both.

Great Jeff, you predicted something that the celtics do every single game, play hard, keep it close and lose in the end. Im pretending the sun will rise from the east tommorrow, you heard it here first!!

“remember when Doc was saying Green couldn’t score without the ball? He was coming off picks right into the catch and shoot a whole lot tonight – he’s learning!”

And who’s been teaching him? Another thing I liked about GG last nite is that often GG did something and Donny Marshall said he should have or could have done such and such. The next time the same situation occurred GG did just what Donny Marshall said. He seems to be picking up things quicker and quicker.
We start 4 high schoolers. Perk who’s in his fourth year has played about the equivalent of 2, we stay close to a very good veteran team, even without Billups, we out rebounded Detroit (I think), BIG Al got 22 rebounds (what impressed me most was not the number, but that he boxed out and ran after those that didn’t come right to him) AND we still find the need to stick it to Doc. The season is no longer about making the playoffs, but about developing players and deciding who we want to keep. Those who say Rondo should have played more than Telfair last nite may be missing the points that: 1. Telfair also needs to develop and 2. Maybe a decision is being made about Telfair. Also, Telfair’s contract is up after next year and Rondo, I believe has 2 years on his.
And when Rondo did play last nite he didn’t have his greatest game. We seem to be searching out reasons to stick it to Doc, when we really don’t know what is going on behind the scenes.

I believe Indiana picked just before Boston and chose Grainger. We never had a chance at him. Grainger was a 4 year college player (I believe) and I’m not sure he’ll get much better than he is now. He’s also playing with a veteran team. GG still has so much upside. It would be interesting to ask Danny what he would have done if he had a choice between the two.
Agree with those people saying Perk isn’t playing well and he isn’t. But, I still don’t think he’s fully back from his heel injury. Also, things have changed since before his injury and his role has changed. Jefferson needs to start and Perk has to adjust his role to Al’s. That’s going to take time. Perk is also defending players away from the basket with Al in there and that is also a change for him. Right now Perk is still the best one on one defender of the more elite centers in the league.

“Bassy is the And 1 version of Dan Dickau”

Dickau was a better shooter and was much slower. He did have good court vision. He was also more experienced. I don’t see any comparison between the two. Telfair, because of his quickness has a chance to improve his defense. Dickau was as good a defender as he would ever be.
