Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

We're Number 3

Looking at the rankings, we are now ranked third to last in the league (or third best shot at one of the top picks).

ESPN takes it a step further and ranks us dead last in the league in the Power Rankings.

Don't get too excited (or depressed).  Once Paul, Wally, Delonte, and others get back, we'll go back to being mediocre again.

Stop, its not that bad, I’m enjoying watching Jefferson and Green play more. With a top 2-3 pick in this draft it will make us a better team down the road. If we end up with the number 1 pick….“IF”

I can see a nice tandem of Jefferson & Odgen up front with Pierce at the 2 guard and Green at the 3 spot.

Now if one of our guards develops, we’ll be looking fine. I see Wally as a good 6th man off the bench and

Hopefully Danny can use Ratliff’s salary to be able to swing a deal for a veteran point guard.

Am I drinking the Cool-Aid here….“Yes” I am and I like it….

We can all dream…what else do we have to look forward to ;)

It’s Oden people … O-D-E-N, not Ogden, or Odgen!!!

Honestly I’d rather lose while getting to see our very young players develop into legit NBA players than watch Wally and Pierce “lead” us to 35 wins.

by TomHamilton30 on Jan 15, 2007 9:47 PM EST reply actions

Who in the heck is Odgen?

by TheReaLPuba on Jan 15, 2007 9:48 PM EST reply actions

I’d be stunned if PP and Wally played a combined 15 games the rest of the year. We’ll be the Oden favorites by the All-Star break which is only slightly less important than saying we’re the favorites for LeBron. You think we’re going to miss a chance at a once-in-a-generation C this year? We’re going to give it everything we’ve got.Look for many injury “setbacks” this year..

Right on Ancient Red – All we have to look forward to is our hopes for next year. And it is fun watching these young guys get playing time.

by scndtony on Jan 15, 2007 10:12 PM EST reply actions

I want to see Rondo develope into a legit starter for next year. He looks better and better. Plus hopefully TA will be back as a sixth man so Wally will be buried on the bench or traded for something, anything.

Sorry my typo on ODEN

by Ancient Red on Jan 15, 2007 10:32 PM EST reply actions

Hopefully Red will smile on the Celts with the first pick Oden a 7’ foot true center. Both a defensive and offensive player has been compared to a young Patrick Ewing currently a freshman at Ohio State.

by wbones1 on Jan 15, 2007 10:38 PM EST reply actions

At this point it’s critical that Danny Ainge take charge and tell Doc who is going to play and who is not. If it were up to Doc he’d play Wally and Pierce on one leg if it meant two or three more wins. Let the kids play and develop and at the same time improve our standing in what will be a very strong draft.

Just keep Doc as far away as possible in any decision making. Yes, the same Doc who started West in the 2nd half at Golden State when it was obvious West could barely stand up let alone play.

by DAS on Jan 15, 2007 11:13 PM EST reply actions

If we are truely an average team with Pierce then lets trade him for a younger guy to grow with the kids? I love him and really think he deserves a shot at the title if he can’t do it here.

by steelbos on Jan 16, 2007 12:15 AM EST reply actions

trade PP to the Bulls for whatever so he gets a championship and we get a top pick. If we let Paul come back we are going to win more games.

oden might not even be the first pick, he might not have heart, drive and
desire…of course he might have just been beaten badly by a pier earlier in the season because of inexperience youth…but who knows he might be the next Patrick big heart Ewing… i just wish we werent playing this clippers style shoot for the lotto game and were playing to make up 3 games for the division title and to have something to improve on next year.

It’s too bad they can’t simply cancel the rest of the season for lack of interest and go right to the draft. There’s a limit as to how much bad basketball— and bad coaching— a man can take.

It just proves the point of there being no reason to have Wally and Pierce come back this year. Tell Pierce his foot still hurts. Drop a brick on it if you have to. The worst thing that could happen at this point is for the Celtics to win some games. Durant and Oden will be all-stars virtually from the day they step on the court in the NBA. The Celtics best hope to be relevant again is to get one of those two guys. They need to finish with a bad enough record to gaurentee a top three pick. It is the best hope for the future.

by JohnK on Jan 16, 2007 9:43 AM EST reply actions

It is high time we do something with Wally. It is no coincidence that with injuries like his, Pierce, West, Scal, Perk, etc more minutes are and were given to AL, Green and Allen. All stepped up prior to Allen going down. Even Ray had a good shooting game yesterday.

When Wally comes back, it cuts into GG minutes. If we can’t make a suitable trade to get expiring contracts, it is time to cut his minutes in half or even consider a buyout similiar to C Webb.

Wally is too high a price $25M for the next 2 years to have trade value. Teams aren’t going to trip over themselves for a “shooter”. Green is starting to put up Wally #s. Doc always seems to choose the vet over the youth, so take the decision out of his hand.

All that can be hoped for the rest of the season is the youth to develop and getting a strong draft pick.

by bceltfan on Jan 16, 2007 9:50 AM EST reply actions

So can we officially say that Kendrick Perkins sucks? I don’t care what his deal is with injuries or whatever, he has been back in the swing a few weeks now. If he can’t tough out a few rebounds against the hawks who don’t really have a great rebounder at Perkins height then he has a major problem. I have been a huge Perk fan. But he hasn’t shown me anything this year, even before he got hurt. He seems to shy away from contact on put backs way too often. He looks absolutely lost on offense. On defense he hasn’t been much better. We have needed him to step up his game and help Al out on the boards but he hasn’t been any help. Maybe that extension we gave him was a mistake?

JohnK says

“The worst thing that could happen at this point is for the Celtics to win some games”

Hey JohnK I wish you had the “stones” to walk in the Celtisc lockeroom after a loss and walk over to Al Jefferson after he works his butt off to grab 20 rebounds or so and say “Good job Al keep it up – I like your effort but I don’t want you to win another game this year”

Or walk over to PP and say “man I hope your foot still hurts – losing is good for us”

Losing is not the end of the world, and yes I want a good lottery pick (if it happens), but to see the desire and effort our young players are putting out on the court, trying desperately to win and then hope they lose seems so distorted and twisted to me.

Losing over and over will destroy your confidence, it will destroy your pride, it will eventually make you angry at your teammates and yourself, it destroys whatever chemistry you have. To wish for that is mind boggling to me.

Doc’s lack of a timeout at the end of the game is what we should all be upset about. It was unbelievable.

Peace

Appreciating the Celtics!

I was a little kid but I can remember the last few years of Russell and how the Celtics dominated. These are lean years but I will try to appreciate what I have.

This reminds me of my 1st job at college, part timer at the post office. My job was handling undeliverable mail. One letter during the holidays addressed to God. I opened it and an 80 yr old lady lost her pension check, was having long time friends she hadn’t seen in years visit, and was requesting God to send her $100 so she can give them a dinner, etc.

After reading this, fellow workers and I took up a collection, had $94 and we mailed it to her. A week after we get a letter addressed to God, same lady.

It says, thanks God for the money, we had a great evening, appreciate it very much. However, the money was $6 short. Those bastards from the post office probably took it.

Didn’t seem to do that to the Spurs in 1997 who tanked for Tim Duncan and won a championship two years later, or the 1983 Rockets who tanked to get Olahuwan and were in the finals two years later. That sounds nice and it ought to be true, but it really isn’t. These guys are professionals. They get paid to play and will play hard next year regardless. Further, I don’t care how much spirit you have, it comes down to what players you have. I will take a broken spirited team with the next Bill Russell in Oden or the next I don’t know who in Durant than all the spirit in the world with lousy players.

with pierce back we will be a much improved team. (pierce and big al are as good a 1 2 as the east has to offer, give gerald “ice in his veins” green and rajon rondo real minutes and we should be finish the season playing 500 ball.
we probably will miss the playoffs but i doubt we will have much of a shot at a top 5 pick.

its not to late to make the move that gets us into the playoffs and give our own young studs some valuable post-season experience.

theo, wally, perk, telfair, and gomes should all be available for the right player this deadline.

Losing sucks, but it doesn’t kill franchises unless they let it. This is true in the NBA, the NFL, and MLB. Loser is a temporary state that everyone passes through from time to time. If you feel that you’re an exception, just wait your turn. People with the demonstrated abilities of pro athletes bounce back all of the time.

The ironic reality is that many teams need to bottom out in order to improve. Even though we lost the Tim Duncan lottery, we got Chauncey Billups and Ron Mercer. Billups, as everyone here knows, went on to become a Finals MVP, just not with us. The Celtics were in the Conference finals 5 years later.

Most people want Oden if he was available to them, in my humble opinion Durant is super star potential, he’s a real good player in most every aspect of the game. He sort of reminds me of Kevin Garnett but with a better handle and shot from further out. He’s passionate with his play and that is encouraging to players. I say he’s gonna end up being the man of the future in the NBA, he’ll be right there with players like Lebron James, Kevin Garnett, and Amari Stoudamire, and he’ll be compettive on their level from tip off to lights out.
Kevin Durant is the man I would take if I had the opportunity to choose

Cousy’s take (indirectly criticizing Doc?):
Bob Cousy offered his thoughts on the Celtics’ turnover problems (they committed 20 for 32 points yesterday). “Most coaches don’t want to open it up and turn it loose because they’re worried they’re going to screw it up,” said Cousy. “The Celtics average 17 turnovers a game now and in their mind they think, ’It’ll be schoolyard and we’ll be throwing it all over the place.’ I don’t agree with that. Frankly, I think we turn it over because with any halfcourt set we use, it means five guys handling the ball. I would much prefer to run transition, where I keep the ball in the hands of my best ballhandler at all times. And with two passes, we hopefully effect the same quality shot that we’re looking for in the halfcourt using six or seven exchanges.”

by Celtsfansince55 on Jan 16, 2007 12:46 PM EST reply actions

Like most Celtic fans, I like Perk, but…he talks about getting down to 250 from 272, as if that might help his foot. I doubt it. In any case, it will deprive him of one of his few attributes, his strength. We have to find a 5 for the future. Perk is no more than a backup at best.

by Celtsfansince55 on Jan 16, 2007 12:48 PM EST reply actions

Will some one please tell me why everyone assumes that Oden will be coming out after his freshman year. Thanks.

by Celtsfansince55 on Jan 16, 2007 12:49 PM EST reply actions

Oden is naturally right-handed but because of an injury has been playing almost exclusively with his left hand, at least when it comes to shooting, including fouls (6-6 from the line in his last game).

by Celtsfansince55 on Jan 16, 2007 12:54 PM EST reply actions

“Didn’t seem to do that to the Spurs in 1997 who tanked for Tim Duncan and won a championship two years later…”

The Spurs didn’t tank that season, we did (with ML Carr & ’Toine), and we ended up with Chauncey Billups and Ron Mercer. Robinson was injured that year and they ended up winning the lottery.

That was a sad year in Celtics history.

We need our young guys to play and get better. If they can’t we’re screwed, if they can, we should win some games.

by GreenBalls on Jan 16, 2007 1:29 PM EST reply actions

Perk has probably been set back by injuries this season as much as Al was last year. And we are seeing what Al can do healthy. Perk had shoulder surgery last summer and was unable to workout until right before camp. He’s been our with plantar fasciitis and still has it. Unfortunately he needs rest to get rid of it. The guy is not in shape and can’t be, not from anything he did, just circumstances.

I don’t know if Perk will ever be a starting center. I think he can be, primarily rebounded/defender/intimadator, but it’s certainly not fair to judge him on how he’s played this season. Let’s get him healthy and back in shape before we consider him a total bust. Wasn’t that long ago this board considered Al a bust. I really don’t hear that anymore. What happened to those experts. They found someone else to S%#& on – Perk.

by badax33 on Jan 16, 2007 1:38 PM EST reply actions

“The Spurs didn’t tank that season” They totally tanked that year. Robinson allegedly had a knee injury, yet I can remember seeing him at the masters that you walking perfectly and thinking WTF? Basically, they told the Admiral to take a powder we are not going anywhere anyway. That is what I am saying the Celtics should do with Pierce. Bringing Pierce back does nothing but ensure mediocrity. I do not think the Celtics should tell their guys not to try, just don’t bring Pierce back and let the young guys, play, get better, and loose.

Oden is coming out this year because he is a sure number 1 or if Durant continues to go crazy number 2 pick. You can’t get any higher than that. There is no point in staying in school if you can be picked that high. You are basically paying millions of dollars in forgone income for the privilage of playing college basketball. He will come out and so will Durant.

by JohnK on Jan 16, 2007 2:06 PM EST reply actions

The lottery is just a chance and not a very good chance once PP comes back. The 76’s, Bob Cats, Super Sonics, Blazers, Grizzlies (I’m hoping the Grizz. still have a run in them) are all going to race for the bottom once the all-star break occurs. The Hawks have no incentive to lose, since Phoenix has there pick (I’m hoping they fire there coach and that inspires them to separate from the pack).

Good managers have a plan and when the plan becomes flawed for what ever reason (injuries, employees not developing at the rate you hoped) they adapt on the fly and flow into the next plan.

I believe we are at the next plan stage. The franchise player that was dealt (AI), did not come to Boston. Garnett and Oneil are not going to be traded this season, I don’t believe Gasol will be either. The next possible franchise players to be available are Oden and Durant. Management has to ask themselves how do we position our company to best obtain one of these top talents, that if acquired has the ability to draw more revenue from the world than any of our current employees. Short term this seems like a quitters mentality. Long term, even if we don’t acquire the top two talents, the possibility of having Noah or Wright is not going to hurt this team.

This decision does not come from the GM, it starts at the top.

At this stage, I’m willing to take the chance at the lottery.

by Little D on Jan 16, 2007 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Little D,

That is why you have to have one of the three worst records. You want to be gaurenteed no worse than fourth. Oden and Durant go 1 and 2 and then probably Wright, although the people in Kansas keep saying he is staying, that leaves Noah and Horford and Brandon Wright at number 4. Not a bad selection.

Dead last in the ESPN ratings! Who could disagree? There is not one team in NBA who doesn’t figure they can beat the Celtics. Perk is terrible. So his foot is sore. His hands are bricks. I do not support tanking the season. The team and coach Danny has assembled needs to show an ability to win. All teams have injuries. Most suck it up and get a win or two. Charlotte beats Detroit etc. I’m sick and tired of terrible defense. Youth lacks experience but should have extra hustle. Where’s that except for Al, Powe, Rondo and poor T. Allen. Somebody on the court needs to lose his temper, take the fine, but instill some kick-ass into this timid bunch.

I am even opened to trading Paul Pierce to Chicago for the knick’s pick; another first rounder and fillers- other than Gorden we don’t need him. We are scoring a lot of points without Paul and will do better as time and experience kick-in

Durant looks pretty good …. looks like there might be two can’t miss picks in this years draft – Oden and Durant. I’ll take one of the first two picks. With Durant being able to play so many different positions (will have to add some strength and weight) there is a lot of flexibility with the roster we all ready have. Flexibility to trade.

by dirtyeggs on Jan 16, 2007 11:12 PM EST reply actions

I agree 100% Wildblue. I’ve been wanting Doc to “send in the goon” and have Powe punch someone in the nose.

Seriously, there is no hustle, evidenced in our defense and/ or lack there of. Defense is mostly hustle and knowing your rotations if someone gets beat.

What was the subject of this post? I’m flaming… I’m out!!!

cblake,

Was that not one of the best college games ever? Durant is averaging over 33 points a game as a freshman in an elite conference. The guy can do everything. I don’t get too excited about college players very often. I have seen so many can’t miss guys end up being stiffs, but I think Durant is going to be a great player, maybe one of the best ever.

Hey guys, i was just wondering what other people thought
I know everyone is hopeing for the #1 pick in greg oden or at worst the #2 pick and Kevin Durant. However we also will most likely have 2 first round picks, Cleveland’s, because of the jiri whelsh trade (YES!), as long as Cleveland is higher than the worst 10 records in the nba. Just wondering what do other people think we should do with that pick… should we trade it because of our abundance of young players or should we draft another young guy? and if so which position/who will b a sleep?

kk thx guys
