Perk Still Hurting

Bulpett reports:

ATLANTA - To say the Celtics have had nine healthy bodies the past few games isn’t entirely truthful. Kendrick Perkins still is bothered by the left foot plantar fasciitis that cost him 10 games in December.

That was rather evident yesterday, when he was scoreless with two rebounds in 12 minutes of a 100-96 loss to the Hawks. Perkins was visibly laboring in his movements.

“Oh, it hurts like hell,” he said. “But I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it now except get rest when I can. I’m just trying to ride it out to the end of the season.”

Looking ahead to the offseason, Perkins is pondering a lessening of the load on his foot. He’s been weighing the merits of lowering his weight from the present 272 to around 250.

“That’s the approach I’m thinking of taking,” Perkins said. “I just don’t know if that’ll be losing too much.”

Honestly, this is so damn stupid. Just sit him. We’re not going to win or lose based on how he plays right now. There’s no reason to risk further injury or even to let him play. Rest up for 2 months, try to get a good last month, and just play Olowokandi at this point, who really cares?

by teddykgb on Jan 16, 2007 9:56 AM EST reply actions

Let him rest. See if he can start lossing weight now as he rests. There is no point in throwing him out there.

by Wide Load on Jan 16, 2007 9:58 AM EST reply actions

glad to here he is that injured (b/c if he played like that healthy i’d puke in my beer)
good move perk, sit now loose some weight, gain some foot speed…(can loosing weight increase hand speed… you can’t rebound if you cant get your hands in the way of the rebound)

maybe we make a move for another big man… sam dalembert anyone?

by arctic 3.0 on Jan 16, 2007 10:07 AM EST reply actions

This is the greatest time for the Celtics in a long time. We are seeing the development of Green and Al into legit NBA players, while losing enough games to qualify for another good big to play alongside Al (hopefully Oden). This is wonderful.

About Perk’s injury, plantar fascitis is not something that “heals.” I have it too. Once you have it, it never really goes away. The best he can do is lose weight as he said and lighten the load on it. Other than that he has to learn how to play with it. Obviously I don’t have to go through the physical strain of a professional athlete, but Sam Cassell is a good example of a guy who has been playing with it for years. He’s older now and so he is breaking down, but he’s had it a long time.

by migit on Jan 16, 2007 10:07 AM EST reply actions

rest perk. he’s not really helping the team out that much. give him a few games off, see if the foot is any better. if we really get in a jam w/ the bigs, bring him off the bench, but do that only in a worst-case scenario. its obvious he’s nowhere near 100%

by get_banners on Jan 16, 2007 10:19 AM EST reply actions

We’re the 3rd worst team in the league right now. Rest poor Perk and give Kandi 20 min. Who cares? Everybody is thinking about next year, so…
I think i can’t remember visiting celticsblog with such a depressed feeling around a current season.
I keep reading people would like Paul to sit out for the rest of the season, and the same with Wally and Delonte. It’s really depressing!!! It’s only january and you are waiting for next november!!!!
Ah, well! At least we’ve got NBA games on Xbox/Play Station and the fantasy leagues…!

by greenwise on Jan 16, 2007 10:24 AM EST reply actions

This is bad for Perk. Like migit, I have planter facitis. I am in the military and have to run to keep my job. As my pediotrist once told me “your feet are just not made for running”. I don’t think it is going to get better. This is a shame.

by JohnK on Jan 16, 2007 10:31 AM EST reply actions

Alright, fine. I take back what I said in the last post about Perk being completely awful. If this is true, I still think he has some major problems, but not as big as I had once thought. Sorry Perk.

by Acie Earl on Jan 16, 2007 10:38 AM EST reply actions

For people who spent a lot of money for tickets, this really sucks. Although I have never been a fan of Perk, I am tired of going to the games and hoping that one or two of the young kids play well so it will be worth the $105 per seat that I am paying. >:(

I’d rather watch Leon Powe.

Losing weight did wonders for Al let’s see what it can do for Perk.

by ReadyFor17 on Jan 16, 2007 11:34 AM EST reply actions

Yup, sit Perk, give Kandi 20 min and give Powe his 20. Powe’s earned it.

by Szczerbiak Attack on Jan 16, 2007 11:47 AM EST reply actions

Unless playing Perk will cause his injury to worsen, play him as much as he can bear. He needs playing time to improve. We will probably acquire another center in the next few years, but I want Perk to be the best he can be, and a member of the Celtics.

by ThickNThinFan on Jan 16, 2007 12:10 PM EST reply actions

Sit Perk. If he’s hurt, rest him.

Forget about giving Olowokandi minutes. He will be nothing to our future. Go with the 7 man rotation!

Start Rondo, Telfair, Green, Gomes, and Jefferson, and give them 38 minutes each. Give Powe 10 backup minutes at PF and the same at Center. Give Allen Ray 20 backup minutes at SG and 10 minutes at SF. Bassy can back up Rondo at point for 10 minutes of the game. Yeah!

by slam on Jan 16, 2007 1:06 PM EST reply actions

sit perk and play the kids. NOW is the time for powe and ray to get plenty of minutes. once pierce, wally, et al come back doc will bolt the younster’s butts to the bench.

play powe and ray now.

by hwangjini_1 on Jan 16, 2007 1:25 PM EST reply actions

Rest up Perk!

We’ll need you for the playoffs in ’08!

by Wookie on Jan 16, 2007 1:52 PM EST reply actions

Well maybe now we can settle down around here. So many posters were bashing Perk. Migit, and John K. thanks for the insight on the injury. Acie Earl, your a class act to voice your error in initial assessment of Perk. Hopefully all will learn from this and not be so quick to rush to judgement. I knew this season would be a rollercoaster with the team, but this site has been filled with posters jumping on and off the team or individual player bandwagons,to the latest craze, conspiracy theroies on Ainge and Doc tanking, to where I get more motion sickenss from fans than team play. I felt at times I was entering into a Bizzaro world visiting here. LOL

One must remember that everything in life hinges on how we chose to percieve it, we have that control, and only that control. Like I said once before, it could be snowing outside on a Friday and 1/2 the office thinks, bummer I have to drive in it, shovel snow, ect. and are negative. While the other 1/2 are thinking, alright I’ll go sking, sleding with the kids, ect. and are positive. The event is the same, SNOW, you can’t control it, but it’s how you choose to percieve it that you do control. Watching the C’s and how they play is an event beyond our control also, how we percieve it is what we do control. If you chose to take the negative perspective, you come away from a lost game with anger, mad, no enjoyment and post reflect that. I’m sure those who live with partners who don’t share Celtic craze, thier partners must ask after a loss, why do you even watch if it gets you so mad? LOL The beauty of what’s left of the season since this rash of injuries, is that it’s a win/win now. We can watch the youth get time without a go to vet to lean on, and if we win fine, that means their developing that much faster, if they lose, (but play close and show development) our ping pong balls increasse.

On Perk, I hope he can manage it like Cassell has and continue to develop into a force. If he should play now or not, how would I know? I’m not a specialist on it, nor do I know the pain he is enduring. I can only control what I can and that is to try to look at things from a positive perspective, and as a fan “hope”, and keep the faith, and try to help rebuild Celtic Pride as how I conduct myself as a fan. Peace Try and Enjoy the rest of the season, that’s in your control.

I really would not mind using a 7 man rotation if it’s possible and sit Perk. I’d rather see Gerald develop more and not play Allen Ray if it interferes with Gerald’s time. Also, Doc has no excuse for not playing Powe. He has been better than Perk, Scally, and Kandi all season.. … am I missing something here?

Gotta love the way Al Jefferson has matured and his attitude Every game. He should be getting a huge applause at the games for his commitment, desire, and development.

I second Slam
Give the kandi man 10 mpg top
Go road with 8
Man..that have to be a record
And play 7 high minutes

Bad thing is
With that much playing time
healthy people may get an injury
and nobody and i mean nobody
whats another of those 7 getting hurt

by Edgar on Jan 16, 2007 2:02 PM EST reply actions

Attention Kool Aiders: This team wasn’t going to win 41 games this season with everyone healthy. It is an ill constructed roster, with TWO $10 million stiffs, and a 10 rookie deal players. How anyone thought that it could add up to a winning team is stunning.

I would advocate sitting Perk until he is healthy. He looks pathetic right now, and as a prideful young man, it must be killing him that he and his team is this bad right now.

The Celtics need to continue losing with dignity. As long as they play hard, and Al, GG and RR all get minutes and produce, and they lose in close games, I’ll be happy. 60 losses may produce three good things: a franchise draftee, a new coach, and a new GM.

by TripleOT on Jan 16, 2007 2:34 PM EST reply actions

Sorry Perk. Give it a rest. I’d like to see Powe get more minutes than the Candy Man who has no future with the Celts.

by scndtony on Jan 16, 2007 2:48 PM EST reply actions

Perk is a warrior, he’ll always going to say that he’s ready to play. Ainge has to specifically order Doc to NOT play him……..we’re going nowhere this year, why continue to play him while he’s hurt ? With each game you can see that he has lost whatever confidence he had gained by playing well last season. Come on Doc, can you do anything right ?

by DAS on Jan 16, 2007 3:30 PM EST reply actions

If I understand this correctly, sitting him down isn’t going to help, so he might as well play and try to get used to it. meanwhile, he can try to stay in shape and lose weight.
playing with a 7 man rotation is like Edgar said – eventually someone will wear down and get hurt. And no one can get into foul trouble. i read somewhere that it is actually against the rules to have so few players ready – that’s why we have a 15 man roster. Somewhere, I’m afraid either someone will have to come back (where was Scal when we needed him) or they will have to let someone go – which they also don’t want to do yet.
Oh decisions decisions. And where is Danny all this time? Still haven’t heard a peep since Tony went down…

by bigal_nl on Jan 16, 2007 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Sit Perk out until it heals properly, even if it takes all season.

Why not get an expert in sports’ medicine to give medical advice rather than leaving it up to Perk on what is best for his foot?

Please find out who is the patron saint of sports injuries. As fans we have an obligation to be praying novenas, exorcisms, etc to cast out these injuries. Leave nothing to chance.

Am I all alone? Where is the outrage?! This team is terrible. Scratch that, TERRIBLE. We have 3 months remaining of suffering. How long has it been since they even had a remote shot at a title? 5 years since 2002. >:( :( >:( :(

by mcpu40 on Jan 16, 2007 4:44 PM EST reply actions

The experience of playing will do good for the likes of Jefferson, Green, Rondo, Telfair, Gomes and company.

I’m an advocate of sitting down Pierce and Wally and letting these young guys develop so we can find out who will be part of this team.

I would say my biggest disappointment to date has been West and Gomes. I expected more from them.

PS: The last sentence in this copied and pasted paragraph from espn.com says it all:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have gone from being a team with a losing record to one that’s tough to beat — especially in overtime — in the new year.

Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 14 rebounds, Ricky Davis scored 21 and Mark Blount made a key 3-pointer to give Minnesota a 94-90 overtime win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

OKAY PERK, READ THIS AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS:

Rest is the first treatment for plantar fasciitis. Try to keep weight off your foot until the inflammation goes away. You can also apply ice to the sore area for 20 minutes three or four times a day to relieve your symptoms. Often a doctor will prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen. A program of home exercises to stretch your Achilles tendon and plantar fascia are the mainstay of treating the condition and lessening the chance of recurrence.
About 90 percent of people with plantar fasciitis improve significantly after two months of initial treatment. You may be advised to use shoes with shock-absorbing soles or fitted with a standard orthotic device like a rubber heel pad. Your foot may be taped into a specific position

by bceltfan on Jan 16, 2007 4:50 PM EST reply actions

I love Perk for his pride and hard work but he wasn’t showing much – sore foot or no sore foot. But, he has been worse since he came back. Thus I’m for sitting him, giving the minutes to Powe (who does produce rebounds and steals to make up for his lack of low post size)and filling in with Kandi (who is back to just being happy to cash checks. Boy, he must frustrate coaches. Such a body and no heart). I’m a company man but we are not moving forward like the Bulls are. How many years do we give players (or coaches of those players)that turn it over 20 times a game? I missed Atlanta game but noticed zero TO’s for Rondo. He should not get buried back on bench.

Danny is scouting in Europe or Spain or somewhere like that. I think I have read a statement from Danny following TA’s injury and I’m sure Danny has spoken with TA. There’s not much Danny can do right now unless he considers a trade. He does have a cell phone, probably several, so he is not out of contact with the team or anyone else. Danny is probably doing the best thing he can do right now and that is scout the European players.

Just shut Perk down. The game is hard enuough to play at the NBA level
without painful feet. Give the minutes to Powe and if Al gets in foul trouble they can give Kandi some minutes. If GG gets in foul trouble they can use Ray like they did vs Atlanta. Play Rondo and Telfair together until West returns. Wally and PP can just wait until completely healthy. Sliding toward Secaucus.

Is there not a sole in the D-League the Celtics can bring up? How about Pittsnogle? I think he could get off for about 3 months. Arby’s is never busy this time of year. ;)

by Chief # 1 on Jan 16, 2007 6:54 PM EST reply actions

going by bceltfan’s comments… he needs 2 months off his feet.. i’d say he should spend those 2 months doing laps in a swimming pool and yoga/stretching.

i want to see powe and ray get 20mpg from now on.. dont play anyone else over 40. their minutes should be capped at 35mpg to stave off any further injuries..

Since there does not seem to be any problem with taking another big man in the draft, what about Noah. If Big al could learn to play interior defense, would be nice to have someone with his fire (and height)at PF. He can also run the floor.

by gar on Jan 16, 2007 7:14 PM EST reply actions

I second the emotions of sitting and resting Perk. Let him lose some weight and gain some strength Now this sumer work on improveing his mechanics and mobility. We gain nothing by his playing hurt and toughing it through the season. The same for Wally and West. Let them heal completely. Play with the future in mind.

by Freeease1 on Jan 16, 2007 7:51 PM EST reply actions

I’ve questioned some decisions in the past where players may not have been healthy enough to play, yet played. Real doctors claim rest is needed for this to heal.

If Perk is practicing or playing, one really needs to question the Celtic management. It is one thing if we are about to start a 7 game championship series verse the Suns, Spurs or Mavs; but now is not the time for Perk to even be on his feet.

Everyone can take a Mulligan for the 06-07 season. There is plenty else that Perk can do to become a productive player: weights, diet, basketball instructional tapes/books, swimming, stationary bike, fitness exercises, stretching, etc.

All eyes and focus need to be aimed for a healthy and productive 07-08 season. Shut Perk down for 2 months.

by bceltfan on Jan 16, 2007 8:04 PM EST reply actions

Sit Perk. KP isn’t the same player, but Tim Duncan suffered though a year with that injury and didn’t fully recover until the next season. The only cure is rest.

Prognosis: Eighty percent of cases resolve spontaneously by 12 months. Five percent of patients end up undergoing surgery for plantar fascia release because all conservative measures have failed.

The prognosis is better than I had been led to believe.
