Jefferson left with a mild ankle sprain and the team blew a decent sized lead to lose the game.

No excuse for this loss…Jefferson went down, but they never established a rythm early on…classic game of playing down to opponent…Atlanta has talent and has won some nice games, but once they’re down by 18, you don’t play half-ass, half-court bball like the C’s did tonight…
…team never got the ball to Jefferson consistently, never found Gomes on “his” shots consistently, basically played without rythm all game…
….I’d expect that Jeff isn’t out any major period of time, probably back for the next game…but who knows….good thing he tapes his ankles…

Yes, as of this moment, we are in 2nd place in the quest for ping pong balls.
by JungleJim on Jan 24, 2007 10:16 PM EST reply actions
Perk played well and rebounded (finally, lets try to be semi consistent)
Al had a double-double and a mild injury to help our ping pong dreams
Philly won. Memphis is leading at halftime. We are officially second in worst in the league and (if memphis loses) a game out of the worst record. All we need is a top 5 bad record and we have a shot at restoring our franchise. Its OK….I can telling myself
this is the worst we have been in a decade..

I don’t know what the franchise record is for consecutive losses, but looking at the next 15 games on the schedule, the record may be in serious danger.

Boston Celtics Payroll: $62,622,805
Three Beers at the Garden: $12.00
Season Tickets: $4,300
Any Winning: Priceless

As far as team play is concerned this was one of the worst games I have ever watched. I pity the poor fellows that have to pay over $50 to see them play at the Garden. In fact the owners should be giving free tickets to the Boston fans

Clean house-“can Doc and Danny” at the end of this season. How many bites at the apple do these guys get?

I have to throw my 2 cents in on Doc and his “We are the World” team unity morale. Good coaches get their share of wins, even when there is adversity. A good coach doesn’t scream we’re to young or we’re hurt, he finds a way to play competitive enough to get wins.
Lookey here, if Gilbert Arenas was ticked at us and said he was going to get 50 points like he said we would and did against the Lakers, then we lose that game by 20. If SA Spurs held a grudge, boom we lose by 20.
Doc saying Perk’s foot hurt, what a moronic coach- don’t play the guy until he is healed.

Better to be us than Minnesota, Indy, NY, NJ and a lot of other teams in this league. They’re saddled with long-term contracts and guys who have peaked or are on the downside. They’re stuck in mediocrity.
In the East, I think only Toronto, Chicago, and Orlando have a better set of young core players.
Or is that just rationalizing a dreadful loss….

what are you guys talking about. This was a good loss. Where have you been? It’s become a pretty acceptable standard that losses are our best bet right now and trying to land a top 5 pick. We lost to Atlanta and Philly won. That’s two birds with one stone. That sinks us a bit lower than Atlanta and Philly ends up passing us. How can you be accepting the fact that this season is all about landing in the top 5 and then get upset over a great strategic loss? Grow up you sissies. It’s all going as planned. Red is smiling down on us flanked by Len and Reggie. We are about to make peace with the basketball gods and draft Oden.
Memphis now has 11 wins just one fewer than the C’s.

Good article on how bizarre the C’s play against Vegas:

You guys are insane. This is the healthiest franchise the Celtics have had in 10 years. You want to be mired in mediocrity another 10 years? Or do you want to hit bottom with a bunch of talented young guys and an injured superstar, get a top draft pick and really build a title contender?
We’ve been waiting to hit bottom ever since missing out on Duncan. Since then, Billups and Joe Johnson were traded. Finally, the Celtics are sticking with the young talent and will have a top pick in one of the deepest drafts ever. This is a great season!!! Stop being depressed!!!

- A DECENT SIZED LEAD?!?!?! We lead by 18 and they had 29!!!!! points at halftime. Twenty Freakin Nine points at halftime.
We are awful. Easily the worst team in the league.

- That’s honestly the smartest post yet tonight. How can anyone not realize we need to keep losing this season. We WILL get Oden or Durant.

I like the sound of ping pong balls but I am still stupid enough to want these guys to win every game.
I know, I know, it is senseless.
It feels like “Groundhog Day”.
I have to agree with “Dino, Alla and Stojko”, it really does appear as though we have bottomed out and with a good young core (yes I still believe this), Paul back and a great draft pick, maybe, just maybe, it will be the true beginning of the great turnaround.
I would be happier if Tony had not blown out his knee, but he has shown that he can come back from adversity.
It hurts, but there is no quit in this Celtic fan.
Cheers

I have no problem with going after Durant/Oden(I’d prefer Durant at this point) and tanking the season. I bought season tickets for the first time this year and the most fun I’ve had at a game was Monday because it was an exciting game and we made our chances at the most ping pong balls better. That being said, tonight was the low point for me this year. They blew that huge lead, Al kept getting knocked around, and more than anything the complete and utter offensive confusion that I saw once the Hawks started to play zone defense. I don’t know if they players didn’t know how to attack it or the plays that Doc called just weren’t the right ones but as soon as they went to a zone in the second half the offense just stopped and all I remember is a blur of turnovers, bad three’s, and I lost count of how many baseline picks were set that just didn’t have any effect because they weren’t playing man-to-man. I don’t mind losing as long as it’s a decent game and I even found myself checking the scoreboard hoping Philly would pull out the win and move ahead of us but that second half was painful to watch.

Firstly, when Phily went 9-73, does anyone know how many games they won at home? Secondly, expect GG to suffer a serious injury in the dunking contest at the all-star game. And thirdly, Al’s injuries always turn out to be worse than expected. He is likely to be out for weeks on end, be brought back too soon and then be finished for the season.

Glad I missed this stinker. I run the gamut of all the emotions above. Danny and Doc are accountable for putting such an inept bunch on the court. Injuries don’t help but even blind squirrel finds nut (win) once in a while. I don’t know whether playing talent is inept, coaching talent is inept or both. As an invesor in season tix who expects a proud winning product my money is lost for this year. So I’m in on the ping-pong balls but if they do not show an ability to win in the 4th Qtr before this year is done Doc should go out when the top draft pick comes in. His rah-rah is good for morale but morale is for winning at the end of day.
One more comment…we can’t blame Telfair for the last three losses but if he can’t win playing time on this train wreck then he is truly a bust. Sorry Danny I liked the trade back then but it wasn’t my job to check out Ratliff’s health and Telfair hasn’t provided very many inspiring moments for us to keep the faith in him.
I dont care about the draft. I cant $#%^&@! STAND ALL OF THIS LOSING!! how long can we pretend that we are “losing on purpose” or “losing is good”. this is freaking sad. pathetic. i cant believe how terrible we are.
and those of you who dont believe in the “losing culture/winning culture” theory, better think again. this is no way to make yourslef better.
and i have news for all of you… there is no way we finish in the bottom 3. nooooooooo way. we cant do this all year. it just cant happen when Pierce comes back, and it surely wont.
So now we are all about the ping pong balls.
Bill Walton, ESPN, calls us a “cupcake”.
Danny and Doc must be fired the day after the regular season ends, just like what happens on Monday after the last NFL regular season game.
Get as excited as you want about the team unity and the morale through loses. The fact is, every NBA team knows if you just hang with the Celtics for 3 1/2 quarters, they are very very beatable in crunch time. We aren’t getting the “A” game of many squads and they don’t need to bring it to get a “W” with us.

I fought the battle against the kool aid drinkers before this season started, hate to say I told you so, no glad to tell you, I told you so.
I was on board for trading Pierce last year and thought it would get us a #1 extra pick in the 06, and an extra pick in 07 (both lottery type)picks, plus a junk contract, plus a young quality player. It is time to move Pierce.
We have a 3 year window to win a championship with him and we aren’t there. Big AL playing much better but defensively we won’t be there in 3 years, Gerald still developing, etc.
Part of our demise is due to Pierce wanting Blount and Davis out. With those 2 players we would win this sorry division we are in and be a 500 ball. We got Mr. damaged goods, in Wally, instead of a Al Harrington, Gasol, etc.
Paul Pierce sacrificed himself and we could come up with only 33 wins. He layed it all on the line and unless he got 30 points we didn’t win. Pierce’s trade value is going to diminish more and more.
Go total youth and let the youngsters be our future. This is like the Iraq War, for years we are told how we are close to winning when the reality is completely different from what Danny and Doc tell us time after time. Even if some of these youth faulter, it is better building with a lottery bust at $4M, then it is with the types of salaries guys like Raef, Theo, and Wally are pulling down.

WOW! AND I MEAN WOW!
What have we been talking about the last few weeks in here…..I’m ashamed at most of you…..
Okay maybe things are going always the way we like it… but to expect such a young group to play consistently game in and game out is ludicrous….
This team is going through so much growing pains that most of you can’t phantom
I’m in Danny’s corner with what he has accomplished so far.
This team needs to have this type of season, going to battle every game in the trenches and trying to find itself.
If many of you thought this was going to be easy your nuts.
The only thing we can blame Doc is for his calling of a game. But when you put the likes of Powe, Ray, and Rondo out there, please doesnâ€â"¢t expect to win. Let’s be sensible about what is happening out there
Right now we are we have the 2nd pick in the draft.
Forget about Wally and Ratliff and what your thoughts are about them. Look at them as expiring contracts. Much faster than what we would have had before. And please stop with the nonsense about Blount, Davis, and LaFrentz.
If they were still here where would our development be? We’d be a .500 team and complaining….that’s where we’d be. Look at Minnesota right now with them there and also with Garnett. They are no better than a .500 team and they just fired there coach.
Okay, we don’t have to like what’s happening around here… but accept it…because we have a much better young core than anyone else in the league and we are in a position to be able to grab a top 5 pick in draft….
Remember we always said we’d have our ups and down’s this season… Don’t overreact and start thinking about the moment but about our future!
That was one of the most pathetic games I have ever seen. In the first half WyC can be seen in his seats having a grand old time, the second half he wasn’t a happy man. Game management is on the coaches, keeping the palyers focused during the game is on the coaches. Jefferson goes down is limping and Doc doesn’t call a TO when we get the ball back!!!!!! With AJ history of injuries and the way he has been playing that is simply inexcusable!!!

How to fix this mess:
- Webber for 76ers due to make roughly $30M, 76ers bought him out for roughly $20M, a horrible hit ($20M) but a savings too of $10M. Wally is due to make roughly $30M, Cs need to give him the same type of deal. No GM is going to stick their head on the chopping block and risk that kind of bucks for an often injured, one dimensional player. Buy him out and let him go to the Clippers, Spurs, Rockets, Nuggets, etc and make his own deal. A hit of $20M but a savings of $10M.
#2)Entertain a potential trade for Pierce, depending on what we could get back, pull the trigger if it gets us more young talent and potential lottery picks.
- If we are worried about $$$, we need to buy out and not sacrifice a high draft pick. All this talk about the Raef/Theo save a year on the contract, we could have probably done the exact thing with buying out Raef and saved the same type of money we will save on the Theo contract. Telfair was a horrible choice for the #7, knew that on draft day.
- Do not get vets with questionable health issues: Theo, Raef, Wally.
- Enough of the kum by ah my lord locker room attitude, that’s not what wins championships. Talent does. Kobe/Shaq probably the worst locker room atmosphere of all time yet they won their rings. Rodman, a social idiot, and Pistons got their ring(s). Ditto for Rasheed Wallace.
- No more of this “earn your minutes” garbage. Scal for all I know may be the Larry Bird of Celtic workouts but he doesn’t have “it” to make the Celtics a winner. If this team ever has to rely on Scal to hit a 3 pointer for us to win games, we might as well pack it in. This is about developing the young talent. Example: maybe Powe becomes an 8/8 monster off the bench, maybe he is destined for a 4/4 off the bench career. Give Powe those minutes.
- Gerald Green needs to mirror Pierce’s style of play. Doc must insist that he take it to the rim at least 6 or 7 times a game. We know he can shoot, that’s what he needs for he and the Celts to get to the next level. Get A. Hardaway in here to teach him the cross over dribble. Give Big AL his 15 low post shots per game. Let him continue to develop his handling the double team, etc. Get Rondo 30 min. a game. The more minutes our more talented youth play now in this garbage season, the better we are next year.
- Danny has unintentionally run this franchise into the ground. Doc is and will never be the answer. This team still is way behind, even for a young team to be where it needs to be as a defensive team. This team still gets baffled by zone defenses. We need a fresh start.
- Change the insanity of handling injuried players. Playing any or at all for injured players flows from 1)competent medical staff, 2) the coach, 3) the player. Do not play these guys unless they are 90 and beyond re-injuring themselves due to the specific injury that they are suffering from. The only exception to that rule would be “playoff type games” where the injury would not be permanent.
- No more B.S. from management. If you don’t think Blount/Davis/Banks for the most part is a good trade, than don’t try to sell it to us as a “sidewards trade”. If it isn’t going to make us better, don’t do the trade and admit it, it helped screw this franchise. If you don’t think Telfair is worthy of a top 5 or top 7 pick, then don’t come out and sell us on that. Shoot straight with the fans. Overhaul this franchise, replace Danny, Doc and this current training staff. I look for a positive 07-08, but changes need to be made.
- Remember, we drafted many of these high schoolers because they supposingly had more talent than their college draftee counterparts. It takes about 3 years for an NBA player in the league to start fully seeing their potential. No more of this, we are young excuses. Part of that extra talent we have from these high schoolers needs to start trumping the we are too young excuse.
- Next year, get a coach in here that doesn’t look for excuses on why we lose (youth/injuries) but has the capability to get the best of their players and have them still win their share of games.

All of the crap we are hearing today about where we will be in 2-3 years with patience is the same crap we heard 2-3 years ago. This team hasn’t moved an inch and has actually gotten worse. How many more chances does Ainge get to fix this thing. The act is getting old folks and o hope that WYC and company do something about it soon.
Monday night WYC walks into the bathroom talking to an assisatnt coach and says to him in front of everyone in there " some of these kids can play and some of them plain can’t"
IF HE FEELS THAT WAY WHY ARE THEY STILL HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone take a nice deep breath, aah. Now…
No excuse for the loss. They laid an egg. But AL J has been rockin a steadu double double, Perk gave his best effort of the season, the overall performence arc for Delonte and Gomes is good.
Let up on Doc this once? He cant shoot the ball, dribble for Gerald, or attack the zone for Rondo. What was he gonna do? Who could he sub?
Hold the dynamite. Theo’s year 0 contract will be a mover, & Wallys more appealing w/one year left. See how the Draft goes. There is no quarentee PHI will get a franchise player to go w…..Dre Miller, which what they took home for AI.
Expectations in order for Sebastain? He was dressing on the Raef deal, not the 2nd coming. Peace.

firing all the coaches now accomplishes nothing. this is very simple realy. Winning games doesn’t help this franchise. yeah it helps the players and of course the fans want to see wins but other than that the Boston Celtics would be best served by having a high draft pick in a good if not great draft class. last night’s loss was horrible but long term it helps us.
If anyone doubts the current & future impact of Jefferson, last night’s game was the perfect example.
The C’s build a nice lead off off Jefferson’s work on both ends. Even Perk has room to operate with Al getting double or triple teamed. The perimeter players have time to square up and shoot, etc. And the Celts built a nice lead against a very soft Hawks team.
Al goes out, and it all falls apart. No one can shoot strait, defend or rebound. The only points scored in the 4th by the C’s were a layup or 2 and some free throws. They should be embarrassed after that performance.

How to fix this mess:
Many excellent points, bceltfan. No matter how you look at it – this season has turned into a complete mess. Those of us who were alive and remember the “Duncan ping pong ball disaster” are fearful of history repeating itself. There is no guarantee the balls will bounce the Celtics way. But because of the injuries this has become a lost season except for playing time for the kids. I give up and you can now add me to the list waiting for the lottery. Wins from here on out will hurt us in the long run.

Beginning to wonder if we will reach 15 wins like the miraculous Celtics did a decade ago. At this point, barring a trade, I doubt we will, and would even like to see it happen. Back to the good ol’ days of Antoine Walker as a rookie, Todd Day, Brett “goggles” Szabo, Rick Fox amd Eric Riley. Faaaaaaantastic!
can’t understand how any of you can view the close games and dramatic comebacks as aberations while a stinker like last nights game is the “actual” ability level of the team. This team competes and plays well far more often than it produces a weak-ass showing like last night…
…The Atlanta game was sad, but it was one game…Pierce and Wally will eventually come back, as will Tony Allen..in the meantime, we’ve got Al, Gomes, West playing well with Gerald and Rondo looking to improve…Perkins, Powe, etc…
there are plenty of skilled players on this team and when the C’s decide to hit the trade market they’ll have 3 quality vets to couple with 3 productive younger players aswell as whomever they draft this year…
Pierce, Wally and a fully healthy roster is a pretty solid team…not championship caliber, but certainly capable of winning more than they lose…Jefferson’s inside presence, West’s sharp shooting, Allen’s defense and slashing, and Gomes’ all-around game gives this team 6 players who will produce consistently-and THAT is what makes for the base of a winning team…
Add a vet and a pick and this team will rocket up the standings very quickly…the team has the pieces to play the market and build a winner…
just looking at this photo and think…
I wish someone on our team had an afro similiar to childress’. I think Rondo would look pretty cool with an afro. can we get a vote on this?
