Either Doc is tanking on purpose or he is a worse coach than I thought. He leaves Al on the bench for nearly 7 mins in the 4th quarter after he was dominating, and then brings in an ice cold Telfair, who hasn’t played more than a minute a game, for the last 5 minutes, WHILE Toronto was already on a serious run. What did he think Telfair was going to do at that point? :-\ This guy HAS to be gone after this season.

by Bankshot on Jan 26, 2007 10:00 PM EST reply actions

It was obvious they were trying to lose when they refused to put Big Al back in to replace Scal for the whole first 7 minutes of the 4th quarter (after he had 12 points in the third).

by TomHamilton30 on Jan 26, 2007 10:02 PM EST reply actions

well we already know that doc makes terrible subsitions. but gerald should NOT be shooting ten threes night in and night out. 2-10 tonite and he was 3-9 the other night. stop letting em fly gerald!

So Ainge has definitely decided to tank it after witnessing tonight’s game. I still hope a trade goes down before the deadline. The 2 most obtainable players… Gasol and Maggette. I’d be happy with either one. Time to seperate the wheat from the chaff on this team. Delonte is definitely being showcased right now, with Rondo getting only 13 mins and Telfair 5 mins. Good to see Ainge is looking to make a trade.

The plethora of close games we lose says two things to me: one if Pierce had stayed healthy we would have been pretty good. Two: Doc must be the worst coach on the planet.

by Brendan on Jan 26, 2007 10:14 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know, Doc just might be dumb enought to play Rondo only 13 minutes when he shoots 4/7 for 8 points, has 4 assists and 3 rebounds. One should never underestimate Doc Rivers capacity for inexplicable rotational decisions!

I guess I should spell enough correctly when I’m poking fun at River’s lack of acumen.=-)

by CeltMick on Jan 26, 2007 10:15 PM EST reply actions

Doc made his team play defense. He took the lead to prove his team could beat Toronto. Then he pulled in the reins. Game Over.

by BigAlbert on Jan 26, 2007 10:16 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know about tanking but I do know that doc completely sucked as acoach in the 4th qtr. Jefferson on the bench after he was red hot. He left scal in too long and also ray and delonte and then he compounded that whole piece of crap by taking rondo out and putting in Sebastian ( **** on a bull) telfair. Man what he thinking??? the team fought hard to get back in the game, got the lead and then doc gets caught in a line shift with his stupid substitutions and we get killed. Great comment by tommy how the only offense we run is a motion offense. the reason we don’t execute down the stretch is that we don’t have any plays other than pass it into jefferson and everyone else run around the perimeter/hey let’s face it- we just don’t have enough talent to win games right now. anyone else still think brandon roy wouldn’t have helped more this year than Bassy? why was he even in the game?

by Red2 on Jan 26, 2007 10:17 PM EST reply actions

My biggest fear is that Doc gets taken care of w/ a long-term deal for being a good soldier this year (i.e., tanking). Up until tonight, I thought the tanking theory was b.s. — but you can’t justify Al sitting for that long in the fourth any other way. Danny’s given Doc his marching orders, and Doc’s fulfilling them with aplomb.

Scary thought!

by Bankshot on Jan 26, 2007 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Well considering we have about $40million just sitting on the injured list, isn’t this the kind of youth movement everyone wanted?? All the people who wanted to trade Pierce finally get their moment of youth movement sanctity. I really love the youth on our team, but this is starting to get pretty old. And by this, i mean that if we don’t get someone great in the draft Danny Ainge can shove it imo. Drafting Gerald Green at #18 isn’t skill. It’s just getting painfull to watch these games. The only player that is even playing well enough to make me watch our drowning team is Al Jefferson.

by truthhurts34 on Jan 26, 2007 10:41 PM EST reply actions

Take it for what it is….Doc and Danny have to be politically correct when saying they are not tanking the season….

Same as M.L. Carr did way back….

But, as far as tonights game, I just wonder how hurt Jefferson still is and if the knee or the ankle bothered him.

by Ancient Red on Jan 26, 2007 10:47 PM EST reply actions

i now dub doc ml rivers. al needed a blow but not a BLOW. raye gets 14 in the 1st period, sits forever. then is left in, in the 4th for way too long when it is obvious he is out of synch. oh well, closer to the lottery. there was a beautiful 3rd period. this team has not been capable of or allowed to play a full 48.

by nazzbo on Jan 26, 2007 10:48 PM EST reply actions

there are only 3 untouchables on this team, PP, AJ, and Rondo. Whatever is needed to improve this team should be packaged up, starting with Telfairy.

I dont believe we are tanking it, but tonights game was strange.

Lastly, just a thought but, what if Pierce is putting pressure on the organization to get Gasol by busting his butt to get back in shape and get some PT.

As much as I want a top 2 pick, I really have no idea how you can get it if Pierce comes back.

by cos on Jan 26, 2007 10:51 PM EST reply actions

What a sad, sad state of affairs for a once proud franchise. It was bad enough in 1996 but this is worse.

Intentional tank and everyone knows it. No coach could be that stupid, not even Rivers.

by Brickowski on Jan 26, 2007 10:55 PM EST reply actions

we shoot 48% from the floor to their 41% and loose? We had too many turnovers again and check out the steals and blocks disparity.

We play zero defense >:( >:(

by cblake on Jan 26, 2007 11:16 PM EST reply actions

Get used to this, boys. There are 40 more of these clunkers left to go. They hurt real bad while the game is in progress, especially 4th quarters. But the next morning you can regain your self-respect by checking the standings, and then browsing over to the Draft Express mock draft (http://draftexpress.com/mock.php?y=2007) to see the bigger picture.

by ThickNThinFan on Jan 26, 2007 11:17 PM EST reply actions

Brickowski,

I know your sad and frustration, I enjoy reading your posts. Don’t give up, really.

Give it another year, wait and see what happens with the draft and if Danny makes a trade.

As much as this stinks, sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to crawl back out.

One more year,,,, at least give it that and if they don’t turn it around….then I’ll back you with how this team stinks.

Believe me, I’m as die heart as they come to this team. I’m frustrated but hopefully I understand what they are doing, whether i like it or not…..it will work

by Ancient Red on Jan 26, 2007 11:19 PM EST reply actions

Is there a switch that we can just turn ON when everyone is back from injuries to make us start playing as a team and winning? I don’t think so. This is embarrasing. I hate this. Some of out players hate losing too. The clock is ticking on Doc and Danny… we can only hope.

by fiddlesNdiddles on Jan 26, 2007 11:34 PM EST reply actions

The sad thing is, last year at this time we were reading the same things from the Pro-Ainge crowd: “Give it another year” “The young kids are starting to come around” “The young kids have such potnetial” “Danny is going to make some great moves in the offseason” blah blah blah blah blah.

by vinnie on Jan 26, 2007 11:44 PM EST reply actions

Well, half the season to go and we get Oden or Durant. Aw hell, we can do this. We can suck it up for 40 more. And then Oden or Durant and then we’re on our way. And then Oden or Durant!! Let’s face it, we need a year like this to be inline to draft the stud we need to put us over the top. Orlando and Cleveland lived through some awful years but hey now they have two studs to show for it. We can do it if they can…

by JHTruth on Jan 26, 2007 11:53 PM EST reply actions

This man Rivers is defiling this franchise.

by Brickowski on Jan 26, 2007 11:58 PM EST reply actions

I have had my fill of the Celts for awhile. They can “unofficially” continue to play tank ball. They can have Pierce come back and play 500 ball the rest of the way. They can make another sidewards trade. Too much time between now and close to season’s end when the draft talk heats up. Time for a break from these guys, will have to re-energize for the end of the season and the draft.

by bceltfan on Jan 27, 2007 1:04 AM EST reply actions

Just a thought, what if we do get Durant/Oden and doc continues to be this mistifying with his subs, say like sitting Durant for 7 min in the 4th so with PP being a ballhog with orders from doc himself…Its a nightmare if doc is stilll even coaching next season with us getting either Durant/oden

by bopna on Jan 27, 2007 1:04 AM EST reply actions

HEY GENIUSES…

Al was on the bench because he WAS GASSED. HE HAD TO REST. My god, he can’t play THE ENTIRE GAME…………………..

by Rainman on Jan 27, 2007 1:19 AM EST reply actions

We’ve had a dozen years of relative awfulness. I dont know, I’d rather be the bulls, jazz, or pacers who were able to regroup MUCH faster.

by drkalloch on Jan 27, 2007 1:19 AM EST reply actions

Last time I checked, the Celts are 2-16 since they decided to bench Telfair and insert Delonte West as starting PG. These losses coincide with Pierce’s injury, but it might have been smarter to ether play Bassy or Pondo at the point, and use West as a SF. The four games that West was injured and Bassy started, he averaged 15 points and 5 assists to only 2 TOs. SInce then, Telfair has played in an average of 8 minutes a game.

Why is it that a lot of posters on here were willing to give Delonte the benefit of the doubt when he was playing badly earlier off the bench, even though his minutes were consistently in the high teens, but not Telfair? It’s foolish to believe that any team can develop three young players at the PG spot at the same time. The third PG on every team should either be a young guy playing behind vets, or an old guy like Darrick Martin or Rick Brunson, who have enough experience to know how to be effective in 8 minutes a night.

Maybe the same over-reacting fans who were calling for Tony Allen’s scalp earlier this season will feel equally foolish when Telfair gets consistent minutes somewhere and thrives. Bassy’s 3.5 to 1 assists to turnover ratio in wins should mean something, in that PP and Wally were turnover machines this season.

by TripleOT on Jan 27, 2007 2:48 AM EST reply actions

Telfair is not that good.

Jefferson is a stud.

Green is two years away from being good

Rondo is a jump shot away from being able to start.

D.West is a good role player and a better 1 than 2.

Gomes is also a good role player and would be a great 6th man.

Pierce is Pierce.

We do not need both Wally and Gomes both. They play the same position SF. Wally is too slow to play the two from a defensive standpoint.

I think Candy should play more with Perkins hurt and out of shape. He is long and has talent.

Allen Ray should not even be on the team. He is not very good.

Powe will never be a starter in is league but could be a 8 to 10 player.

Scal. plays way too much. He should only play spot minutes to give someone a blow or cool someone down.

T.Allen’s game is built completely on his althelism. This latest injury could end his career, because he is not a particulary skilled or intelligent player. His injury really opens the door for Gerald to take two position.

Finally, Doc continues to demonstrate that he is not a very good game coach and not the answer for this team. He has done a nice job getting people to play hard, but that is it.

by kjb on Jan 27, 2007 7:34 AM EST reply actions

One more thing, a high draft pick or talented big to play along side Jefferson would be huge for this team next year. The C’s could have monster turnaround, similar to what the Spurs did with Duncan when Robinson was hurt the entire year before.

by kjb on Jan 27, 2007 7:37 AM EST reply actions

Also, Gasol would be great for this team, but only for draft picks and
and non-core players.

by kjb on Jan 27, 2007 7:41 AM EST reply actions

Another horrible 4th Quarter. Posters above are crazy re Doc resting Al. Rainman is right. Al was gassed when he went out. Really gassed! I also agree with TripleOT. Here’s another loss that we can’t blame on Telfair. I would split PG for the rest of this year with Rondo and Telfair. Gerald has too much potential to trade away but he’s terrible right now. He is not ready for the speed of NBA. Same with Perk. They have not stepped up to the opportunity. Perk’s turnovers are understated becuase there are all the fumbled rebounds too. Scalabrine played best D on Bosh. Posters should get off his back. He is not that much of a $$$ drain.

by Wildblu1 on Jan 27, 2007 11:14 AM EST reply actions

Al was on the bench to start the 4th because he was completely exhausted. Did you guys not notice him calling to be taken out of the game at the end of the third? He looked like he was about to topple over.

Micely stated Cos. There is no way this side of hell that Pierce is busting his ass to come back so quickly to play with THIS squad. I smell a Spanish change in the air….

ok

-Telfair is not that good….not yet anyways(he was given the car key prematurly…kudos to Doc for recognizing/correcting)
-AJ is a stud
-PP is a stud
-Gomes is a utility player..probably a keeper(6th man)
-DWest is a utility player and a descent pg(I woudn’t waste too much time trying to get me another pg)
-Rondo will probably be starting someday…but he needs to be a better finisher and have a better outside shot(no need to be a 3pt threat though)
-Doc love smallball…way too much…horrible subs decisions
-Wally its ok comming off the bench, but shouldn’t be there to closing games
-GG is way too green. I don’t think he “holds candle” next to HWarrick whom is roughly of the same age(not to mention the AMorrison, BRoy of the world)
-KPerkins is emotionally fagile(I am worried about this guy). We might be better off starting Kandi at center
-Allen Ray can be a jewell comming of the bench ala Vinny Johnson…the guy heats up in a hurry

…anyways, that’s my two cents…

by cocofan on Jan 27, 2007 2:09 PM EST reply actions

They won’t improve until they cut down on the TOs and play better defense. Against Toronto with Ford out, why didn’t they press more?
Down the stretch they struggle when the opposition ratchets up the defense becausse they don’t run their “offense” very well. Some of this is lack of experience and some of this is coaching. You would think with 6 coaches they could come up with a way to break the high school zones that they see. Grab you scuba gear and head for the bottom of the
pool. The slow slide to Secaucus.
