Running In Memphis
Griz Blog | Game Thread | Chat Room | Box ScoreÂ
The Celtics left yesterday for Memphis prepared to face a very different Grizzlies team than the one they saw (and lost to) last month. Interim coach Tony Barone is 2-1 since replacing Mike Fratello and he has the Grizzlies running and gunning. "They scored 144 in regulation [Wednesday]," Rivers said. "Clearly, he's getting them to push the ball and take early shots. And that's pretty smart, seeing as how they're not a power team." Mike Miller has flourished in this style, particularly in 3-point shooting. In three games under Barone, Miller is averaging 30.7 points, shooting a mind-boggling 23 of 34 from international waters. Memphis has averaged 121 points under Barone

Memphis is a great example of the difference a good coach can make to a team. Another example is when O’Brien replaced Pitino. I’ve been saying it for two years and I’ll say it again, Doc Rivers is not a good coach.

Nah, put Tony Allen on Miller. He won’t shoot 3s that well. The real question is who will guard Gasol,Warrick, Gay and Swift. I suppose Big Al can guard Gasol when Big Jake isn’t in the game, but Memphis has at least three athletic front court players who are too big and too fast for Gomes and Szczerbiak. This game could easily turn into a Memphis dunkfest.
Sorry to sound pessimistic but with AL injured (although still gonna play) coupled with the Grizzlies kicking ass lately, we are gonna get stomped tonight.

Memphis is a better team than their record indicate if you ask me this was clearly a situation where the team was teamed up with the wrong coach, because Memphis is a much better team than what they’ve shown the NBA thus far, they have youth athleticism, and some veterans on their talented team.
Fratello may have been a bit too out of time for this new team.
And in some regards Rivers may be too old fashion and restrictive for his youthful players. Some things like fundamentals every player and team needs regardless of what era they play in, however these players of today are able to do more with their athleticism than most players of yester year, so because of the new type of talent that this generation has it requires more liberties to exercise that talent, and that’s where Rivers like Fratello gets stuck.
“Clearly, he’s getting them to push the ball and take early shots. And that’s pretty smart, seeing as how they’re not a power team.”
He is so dumb, he doesn’t see the direct correlation here…this needs to stop immediately. The Celtics have the personnel and allegedly the desire to do the same thing, yet he just sits there. I would have given anything to hire Don Nelson, but at this point, I think Danny has to do it himself.
Maybe the Celtics perimeter players should start wearing girl’s hair berets like Mike Miller. What’s next, a hair net?
The Cs really need a loss tonight to help their draft position. I expect the Griz to play .500 ball the rest of the season, assuming Gasol isn’t on the shelf. Making young players walk the ball up and execute half court sets all the time is insane. I’m glad we don’t have any of those Fratello-influenced coaches here in boston.

Maybe someone needs to helpfully remind the Grizzlies that they’re supposed to be (according to their owner at least) in the “tanking for Oden” Race with Philly (who also didn’t get the message).
Geez, you’d think figure bad teams would be like this…they’re so bad, they don’t even know how to tank properly.
“They scored 144 in regulation [Wednesday],” Rivers said. “Clearly, he’s getting them to push the ball and take early shots. And that’s pretty smart, seeing as how they’re not a power team.”
Goodness! Think of it! Running and gunning… Gosh, what a NOVEL idea! It’s like a safe landed on Doc’s head & he just shrugged it off…
i predict we are going to get slaughtered tonight..

Training wheels?
More like Doc is the an has put Rondoe and Powe in the basement and locked the door…. Gone on vacation and said, WALLY YOUR IN CHARGE DO WHAT YOU WANT…… ITS PATHETIC….
My left foot alone could do a better job coaching the team. It’d simple kick someone everytime they made a dumb play and then let them keep playing rather than benching them the rest of the game…
OVER AND OUT
I’ll be thinking about how nice it would be to have Pau Gasol in a Celtics uni. Ah the pipe dreams. 8)

I don’t see the Celtics getting blown out as the game pace will actually help bring out the real Celtics, similar to the Phoenix game. However, I kind of doubt they’ll win since they’ll have Doc hanging around their ankles and/or yelling in their ears, versus the opposing team having more free-reign.
