Running On Empty

Doc quoted in the Globe:

"The second-half team was more like the Celtics team and the first-half team was the worst effort I've seen from us this entire year," said Rivers. "I told our guys that I've never been more disappointed in a team in one half than our first half [last night]. I thought we showed up to put on a show. We thought we'd play up-tempo, every man for themselves, no passing, no defense, just a run-and-gun game. The Magic just came and kicked our butts in the first half. In the second half, we just competed. That was the only change."

When the coach sees something he doesn’t like, shouldn’t he call a
timeout and try to rectify situation as soon as it rears its ugly
head? Doc makes it sound like he waited till halftime to yell at
his players.

This team is hitting a big wall right now and I don’t see them recouping anytime soon with the schedule ahead.

I’d continue playing the young kids and be more inclined to sitting Wally down and minimizing Paul’s min once he comes back.

This team needs help and they are better suited to making the lottery presently.

Please no more talk about this team trying to make a push for the playoffs. We are better off in the Odgen running than the playoffs

by Ancient Red on Jan 8, 2007 7:48 AM EST reply actions

This is more about the players than the coach in my opinion. If they think every team is going to play them like the Grizzlies (who didn’t bother to defend) they are sadly mistaken. When the coach only has good things to say about one guy – Scalabrine – you know you’re in trouble. Of course, what he sees in Scalabrine is somewhat of mystery. Yes, the guy plays hard and does a half-decent job of defending big men (but only in comparison to our other bigs). But he makes so many cover-your-eyes kind of plays.

The point guard situation needs to be addressed at some point in this lost season. Delonte West is never going to be a guy you want playing the bulk of the minutes at the point. He’s a great team guy and should be a terrific bench player, but this team needs a guy who can create mismatches and get into the paint. That is simply not West’s strong suit.

Are we just 2 to 3 games out of 1st, lets knock off this talk about the lottery because we have the very worst coach in both leagues and lets win the division title. win win win , is that a bad word or something foreign to celtic fans , why cant we shoot for the division title this year and then hold onto it as we become dominate over the next decade.

by perk on Jan 8, 2007 8:03 AM EST reply actions

we’ve got issues for sure but solid point play puts us at .500…West can’t dribble,Allen shouldn’t dribble and Telfair needs to dribble BUT with purpose…and they’ll let Rondo dribble forever because he won’t/can’t shoot…

Wow what a horrible game by both the players (most of them) and the coaching staff last night!! The ball movement was hilarious, I am surprised Cousy could be in control last night on mic watching that rubbish. For anyone who was pushing for benching gomes and starting jefferson with perk…look at this game. I like perk but as someone stated he really is a career backup unless he is with the just right fit team. Perk on the high post with ball in hand :o
Not really his fault he should be down the box CLOSE to the basket but if he’s there al couldn’t be there, clog things up. While gomes is short and at times plays inconsistant he does alll the little things, off. bounds, passing, mostly good d. Perk is big & strong and to me blocks shots well but rebounds ok only, his offensive is fair if there isn’t a real center to guard him. Good job by TA again, if pierce comes back I’d rather see him playing with tony and wally off bench.
;) A good coach is there when the team shows up playing like last night. I believe 90% of the coaches could have seen the offense last night and improved upon it. Fire rivers, trade telfair he’s useless. Does anyone think he is working as hard as he can on defense?? I love his speed to the basket on drives when ball is in his hands but that is really it. Rondo deserves his minutes.

by 2short on Jan 8, 2007 8:30 AM EST reply actions

“When the coach sees something he doesn’t like, shouldn’t he call a
timeout.” Really, lol. Al needed help inside but didnt it take for the 2nd half to get Perk in there with him? And why not try Powe?

Point being, while this one was on the players (and not just the frontcourt guys-the wings shot bad and Nelson abused the pgs), I still dont think the coach has their back.

by TenaciousD on Jan 8, 2007 8:38 AM EST reply actions

Perkins and Jefferson were the highlight of this loss. Paired together for the 3rd period, they gave up only 12 points. If not for the dreary shooting of the perimeter players, the Celtics would have taken over the game.

Sure Perkins is slow, and has a rough edged offensive game, but he brings a toughness and selflessness that the Celtics desperately need. I say “Let’s play Jefferson and Perkins together for a week, and see what happens”.

by ThickNThinFan on Jan 8, 2007 8:40 AM EST reply actions

2short, were you even watching the game when Telfair was in there? He played really good defense last night (unusual I know, but he did). He was the only one playing good defense on the small Nelson. It’s funny how people now just ASSUME that he played bad defense even when he doesn’t. LOL

by Bankshot on Jan 8, 2007 8:41 AM EST reply actions

Yep, it was a horrible effort all around. Just think: Szczerbiak earned $146,341 for his work last night. Not too shabby for 4-15 from the floor, zero rebounds, zero assists.

Gee, Gerald Green could have done that too, if given the same number of minutes and shots.

by Brickowski on Jan 8, 2007 8:41 AM EST reply actions

Wally really is killing us right now, a time warming bench can make him think
and maybe hes not going to hurt much his trade value

by Edgar on Jan 8, 2007 8:43 AM EST reply actions

bankshot, i did watch the game last night, reread my post, i didn’t say he played bad d last night but overall he does, he doesn’t deserve the minutes he gets, rondo’s d and running the offensive is impressive he’s the future and d west is good for now but would like him off the bench down the road in a year or 2
as for perk i hate knockin’ him because he does work so hard but the man is slow with the ball, if al had more range and the team was set he could be the starting center like a ben wallace but he doesn’t have the foot speed needed

Just wondering, seeing as how we are all complaining about someone, whether it be Doc, Wally, Telfair, Scal, Perk, whoever, why hasn’t someone mentioned the fact that Gomes hasn’t hit a jump shot since early December and since coming back from his short injury has played terribly with the exception of one or two games. The guy plays his butt off and we all know that, but if we are going to be complaining about someone why not Gomes?

One thing that has struck me in the past month or so is how we’re a totally reactive team at this point — we play as the other team dictates. When we play Memphis or Phoenix and they run, we run. When we play a half-court team we play half-court. When Orlando plays a little disinterestedly in the first half, we play disinterestedly; when they pick it up in the second half, we pick it up, too. Just not enough.

by MattD on Jan 8, 2007 10:52 AM EST reply actions

Doc, repeat after me. You could also try writing it 100 times on the blackboard:

Gerald Green needs to start and play at least 30 minutes.

Gerald Green needs to start and play at least 30 minutes.

Allen has been decent, but why does Doc let him dribble so much? 21 points and 6 turnovers…must think he is PP.

by Silas on Jan 8, 2007 11:08 AM EST reply actions

Sit Wally, let him recover. Start giving minutes to guys like Powe, Rondo & ARay to see if you have anything.

MattD has an excellent point. Good teams play their game & let the opposition adjust. Bad teams tend to abandon their game plan & adjust throughout the game. That’s the C’s in a nutshell. They’re constantly laying out the table for the opposing team.

I do think you have to adjust for matchups, but the Celts don’t have anything close to a consistant appoach, with or without injuries.

by LuckyNumber07 on Jan 8, 2007 11:08 AM EST reply actions

We just played the worst Schedule in the NBA these first couple months and are the 5th Worst team. Things will only get worse until the season ends with this brutal Schedule coming up. We might end up with the top 3 pick.

Why? So that he can shoot 4-15 instead of Wally? 2-8 is not much better than 4-15. Oh, wait – it’s even worse!

There is no point in showcasing Wally because even if he shoots 50% plus over the next 6 weeks he will have no trade value. If you want the team to be better over the long term, Gerald Green must be developed.

Wally has played the last five games and has shot horribly in four of them. Gerald Green will have his bad nights too, but he is the future of the franchise. Wally isn’t.

I’m seeing a pattern…..X celtics preform better once playing for another team….
with the exception of poor Marcus Banks & washed up Walker even Mr. Blount seems too be preforming better.
(I’m not requsting his return….) but what I am gathering is that maybe the system here is not suited for players to succeed. Could it be Doc? We’ll soon find out……

by tommyfan on Jan 8, 2007 11:50 AM EST reply actions

Let’s not get all excited about Blount. He had a good stretch of games for the Celtics also, when he was playing for his contract.

Blount also benefits from the fact that Garnett gets most of the attention from the defense.

by Brickowski on Jan 8, 2007 11:52 AM EST reply actions

…I compare the Cs with the Lakers and often ask what’s the difference?…really, appart from LOdom(who’s not playing)…they are or should be a mediocre team, just like ours. They don’t have a really good PG, or a center or even a pf(now that Odom is out). Their bench is just a mesh of young players….but the one difference IMHO is that they know how to defend, and when they run their offense it seems they know where they have to be and when to cut, move or pass. Now, that’s the sign of a well coached team and not the guerilla-ball the Cs call offense.

i for one am not happy with this organization. doc is a flop, danny loves the draft so much he is willing to let his boston celtics stink it up just so he can have some fun with the ping pong balls?

i does not matter that paul has been out. no team with this much talent should be performing as poorly as the C’s are.

i am one sleepwalk performance against the pacers away from hanging it up. (and i will not come back next year unless ainge makes the moves necessary to put a winning team on the court)

could you imagine if we brought in a new coach during the all star break for the second half. being only 2 to 3 games from leading the division , a new coach could breathe life into this team of talented players. if we got a new coach and went 7 for 11 , we would have a nice lead in the division. The way i see it, a team in our division is going to get hot and approach .500 why not us.

by bopna on Jan 8, 2007 12:44 PM EST reply actions

Excellent suggestion, Chief.

Wally is obviously playing hurt. If he has little trade value now, imagine if he got a permanent injury.

On the plus side, Mr Intangible had, by his standards, a career rebounding day…almost doubling his season average…but obviously came back to earth with his usual stellar shooting……While Powe, who actually does rebound and hit almost half of his shots, gets DNP/CD (using the “C” part very loosely there.)

Just curious, Why on God’s Green Earth is Perk handling the ball on the top of the key and blitzing on half of the defensive rotations? It’b be amazing if he actually had consistent reboundins position instead of being closer to half-court than the basket when the ball goes up.

Coco, I think Obie actually does have a history of winning….with rosters a lot less talented than this one….I wouldn’t categorize him with the others you mentioned. I’d take him in a heartbeat.

by iowa plowboy on Jan 8, 2007 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Perk (the commenter above) is right…win, win, win…we could and should take the division title.

But how can you win, win, win with an ailing Wally getting 30 minutes and a coach who is obviously struggling?

by popcontest on Jan 8, 2007 2:42 PM EST reply actions

When are people going to stop all this playoff talk nonsense. This team is not a good team. We don’t have the talent. And the only way we are going to upgrade our talent is through the draft. Will it make us younger? Yes, but the difference is that we have a shot at a top 5 pick as opposed to the middle to late round guys we’ve been drafting. All this losing is great for the Celtics. The absolute worst ting that could happen is for us to get hot and sneak into the playoffs through our awful division. This team has a couple decent young guys who could turn into good players. But we need another star. And I don’t see a star on this roster.

by migit on Jan 8, 2007 2:54 PM EST reply actions

It occured to me last night while watching the game, Wally is the biggest “me-first” player on this team. No wonder he couldnt win with KG down low – he is selfish.

what do you know Scal is still terrible.

by BigAlBeezy on Jan 8, 2007 2:55 PM EST reply actions

This is a different draft than most years. There are several guys in addition to Oden who are not projects. They are big men who will contribute immediately and be all stars or near all stars by their second year. Normally I am skeptical of the draft, but this year is different. This is the best draft in 20 years. The best thing that could happen to the Celtics is for Pierce to nurse his foot the rest of the year and get a top five pick.

by JohnK on Jan 8, 2007 3:04 PM EST reply actions

I’m coming around on Doc. He may have bad in game characteristics, but after watching the clip of him at practice, and watching how he is always teaching in games, he may be the right guy for this team. Yeah we’re losing more games than we would with a better coach, but I feel Doc may be doing a good job with the young guys:

Perkins in year 4 – better every year

Jefferson in year 3 – seems about to break through

West in year 3 – basically the same player

Allen in year 3 – dude is zen of archery, rookie year he was mindless, sophmore year was overthinking, year three he is mindless through training – its a poorly worded allusion but it works.

Green in year 2 – solid offensive threat, improved defender and rebounder

Gomes in year 2 – basically the same

As long as guys are getting better at aproximately the right pace – then what else do we want? Sure it would be good to win more through better game coaching (timeouts, plays, systems, rotations, game plans) – but in the end this is a first round team in the playoffs, maybe they could get lucky and win a series. But if all the guys have good skills and the right attitude, bringing in a new coach will fix that problem. I want the C’s to win and make the playoffs, but many don’t so what’s the harm of keeping Doc? I know that people complain about minutes, but that’s a zero sum game. Improving the talent level of the individuals through practice is not.

by Brendan on Jan 8, 2007 3:54 PM EST reply actions

Re: TA’s turn overs: I’ll take the 6 TOs when you get 7 steals, 9 rebounds, and a block. Your defense and rebounding is creating more possesions than your TO’s are creating – a net gain. His drive was also the only offensive weapon working most of the game, so he had the ball a lot. Also – in classic Doc fashion he is overplaying TA. Cut him back by 5 minutes (strategically alocated for keeping him rested) and he probably makes one or two less mental mistakes.

by Brendan on Jan 8, 2007 4:02 PM EST reply actions

As for Wally playing over Green – this is not the coaches decision. This is the NBA where veteran players rule. If you want to blame anyone, then blame Danny for stocking the team at the wing positions. If Danny wanted Green to get that kind of floor time, then he would should have cleared the depth chart at Green’s position. This is not Doc’s decision to make. If Doc gave Green Wally’s minutes then we’d really see what losing a locker room looks like. You do not sit an 17 pt/gm veteran over a second year 19 year old. It just isn’t done in the NBA, by any coach. If Wally says he can go, then he plays. It’s that simple. I don’t like it either, but I understand why Doc does it.

by migit on Jan 8, 2007 4:18 PM EST reply actions

I think the comments from Scalabrine are hysterical….the whole article is. If you look at his relatively awesome rebounding numbers, Scal really brought it last night…..What’s ironic is the source of the comment…..hard to tell when Scal is “bringing it” or when he’s not.

Good that Doc has an extended stay in Orlando….Could he extend it longer?? Please :‘( :’( It’s not like these guys need to practice or anything…..

Doc will never be able to coach this team to a playoff win.

Danny will never be able to make a solid trade to bring in the vets we need to win with Pierce.

We have the talent on the floor, what this team lacks is direction. Wyc needs to stop being a fan and get to work before Ainge wastes any more seasons on his precious ping pong balls.

Lets examine Wally from the right perspective. He has no value for us cause we are a rebuilding team and he is only taking developepment time from players that need it. His scoring will not make any impacting difference at th end of the day, so really; he is not a long term solution for us. Saddly he is just taking up space in our team.

But, on a team that is already competing for a title, he can be the second coming of “instant microwave”, that scorer from the Detroit bench
from the late 80’s. He is an excellent shooter when on, so maybe Dallas or some other team that needs instant offense off the bench in the playoffs can surely use him. No defense there, but if you are in the playoffs, you have some defense, we have none. So Wally has his value, good value; just he is not what we need right now. Lets say his pluses do not cancel his minuses, and we cannot afford that at this time.
He could have been our Wedgman from years past, a rifleman for the playoffs:remember? Lets get something for him later on, when teams need to hone their offense for the playoffs.

Wally off the bench makes great sense, a veteran for the 2nd group who does have some leadership qualities. A 3pt threat (even when he isn’t hitting) who will stretch a defense allowing larger lanes for players to drive to basket. As for Pierce being in same paragraph….definately agree with bankshot, pierce in another level all together. Take him off this team we’d be real real bad.
