Atlanta Rumor
Just for fun, here's another rumor making the rounds. The author of this blog seems to be a Hawks beat writer, so make your own call on the reliability of his source:
I’m floating two more trade theories I’ve heard about today.
- Hawks trade Salim Stoudamire, Esteban Batista and Lorenzen Wright to Boston for Wally Szczerbiak. Money works. I don’t like the idea of this one as much as the others that have been tossed about here. I don’t understand it much either, for either team. Sure, Szczerbiak would be a potent second scorer for the Hawks, a guy who could play the 2 or the
- But his arrival (and at his price) would muddy the development situation for Josh Childress, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams.

Is that even a “rumor”? The author calls it a trade ‘theory’, whatever that means, and says “Iâ€â"¢m not saying itâ€â"¢s going to happen or that itâ€â"¢s even been floated from one party to another.”
I’m all for trading Wally, though. It’d be nice if Aingle could actually get something useful for him, but, at this point, trading Wally would probably be addition by subtraction, as Doc would have to give his minutes to Allen or Green.
Well, I’ll say this: it would give us cap room rather quickly. None of the Atlanta players makes more than 3.3 million [at least this year] and they all come off the books after next year. In addition to Ratliff’s money, which is coming off the books one way or another after next year, we’d have a good sum of money to play with or use to sign our young uns when needed.
It would also give Tony Allen and Gerald Green additional playing time. The only player of worth coming from Atlanta is Wright, who is a big stiff. But he’s cheap, his contract runs out soon, and when given minutes in the past he has produced 6-8 rpg; given our lack of depth at PF and C, he could be serviceable.
I would say no to the trade right now and see if I could find anything better. [I’d pray that Dallas would want to move Anthony Johnson for Wally, but that is a far far far shot]. If nothing better came up by the deadline and this was still out there though…well….maybe.

addition by subtration is right. at this point it’s not about what we get in return for wally. it’s about what we’re able to do by being out from under his contract and minutes. this takes some forward thinking that most don’t like. but it should the biggest priority this team has right now. even if we trade for a veteren before the dealine, it STILL makes sense. would you rather have tony or wally playing down the stretch?
we should include telfair in this deal and try to get back childress, whose been hurt and plays the same position as wally and josh smith. they’ve wanted to play marvin williams at the four so this would really improve their rotation, with telfair and claxton at the 1, JJ at the 2, with fron court combos including a mixture of wally, j smith, m williams, s williams and zaza. wally brings them a solid vet presense for 2 years. childress then becomes a better trade piece for us.
Bunk.
We don’t have the roster space anyway for that deal.

They’re not going to add Childress for Telfair.
I don’t see the point in this from Atlanta’s side. They’re better off having defenders like Smith and Childress playing along side Johnson than a guy that brings nothing but questionable outside shooting when healthy.

I actually floated around the idea to trade for Josh Childress over at Boston.com a few weeks ago. Atlanta would be a good target for a trade, though not necessarily for Wally. They are in a perilous situation now with the whole Phoenix situation. If they get a top 3 pick, then they get to keep it, but 4 or below and they will have egg all over their faces come this summer. That makes me think that Atlanta would be looking to deal 1 player for three, or 2 players for 4, which would flesh out their rotation.
How about sending Delonte, Veal and Gomes for Shelden Williams? They get a guy who could play the point alongside Joe Joe Johnson and play some time at the 2. They also get two power forwards, one of which can play some time at the 3 in Gomes. We get a young big man on his rookie contract who should eventually be a good NBA defender and rebounder. That gives them some depth in their front court and adds another guy to their backcourt. It helps to slim down our roster and make it more manageable. The money should work, and if it doesn’t they have plenty of short contracts to throw in and send back in the other direction. Maybe we could get Salim stoudemire in the deal.
I really don’t think that Atlanta would want to take on Wally’s contract. Why use up cap space that ould be used to sign a good free agent on him? With the deal I just outlined, it gives them depth now.
I’m thinking that unless the Celtics are extremely fortunate, they have to look at Wally as being unmoveable until he has only one more year to go on his deal, and that is a season and a half away right now. The Hawks aren’t exactly bereft of shooters, their problem is that they have no depth, and we have far too much of it.
Lorenzen Wright is their only real backup center and I’m not that high on him anyways. What is the use of bringing him here if that is only going to worsen the glut we have in our front court? Al would shift over to the powerfoward spot, while Gomes an Veal would have to try and split whatever time was left. Leon Powe would never get on the court again, and so would be completely wasted. This way our big man rotation could be Al, Perk, Shelden and Powe. Nice, crisp and clean, and we could draft another big in the 2007 draft and it would cause a terrible situation. Our point guard situation would be set with Bassy and Rondo fighting each other for minutes. Paul, Wally, Gerald and Tony could play all of the 2 and 3 spot minutes. Playing time would be fairly transparent and all parties would be better off than they were before.
I would even consider sending Tony Allen if the Hawks wanted another wing as opposed to getting 2 PF’s, but I think that this deal would work for both sides nicely. We could always do another deal next season using Theo’s contract to move a player or two for someone tasty in return. Think about it, because it makes a lot of sense.

You know what the best thing about this trade idea is? Wally makes the Hawks a better team and perhaps gets them by the Celtics in the standings as we move up in the lottery rankings. Do it by all means.

Note:I meant that it WOULDN"T cause a terrible situation if we drafted another big man in the 2007 draft, in the post above.

The thing about Wally is next year he is going to be this year’s Theo Ratliff in terms of his contract. He will soon be a big asset, and we might get something in return for him.

“But his arrival (and at his price) would muddy the development situation for Josh Childress, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams.”
Put “departure” in for “arrival”. Swap “muddy” for “open up”. And substitute the name “Gerald Green” for “Josh Childress”, “Josh Smith” and “Marvin Williams”. And to an extent, toss in the names “Big Al” and a “Tony”.
At least someone out there sees that these kind of situations can slow down the development of young talent.

This is stupid. This isn’t even a rumor. This is like if Jeff posted one of the stupid trades that someone runs through the RealGM checker and posts on here and called it a rumor. This article, and this site for as long as it calls this article a rumor, have no credibility.

I don’t see the Hawks doing this trade. It is one of those “rumors” that float about prior to the trade deadline. If Hawks want Wally, you had me at hello!
by bceltfan on Jan 10, 2007 3:18 PM EST reply actions
I think it might make most sense at this point to trade Wally for a draft pick(s) and a high-priced veteran whose contract expires after next season. We all know that Danny needs to make a trade for a veteran star at some point, but the way the season is going it’s probably not going to happen this year. So why not get more chits that can be used in that trade when it does comes? That would give us two expiring contracts (along with Theo Ratliff), along with two future draft picks (along with the Minnesota pick)to use in a trade for a star next season.

that makes absolutetly no sense for Atlanta. dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

Why would we trade Pau Gasol for Al Jefferson, Green I’ll do, Jefferson I will not.
