i think we should continue to be patient with tony, gerald, al, delonte and rajon until a true blockbuster comes along. i’d be more comfortable allowing gomes or telfair to go in a smaller deal, like to tempt a team to take wally. with perk i’m torn, but he probably falls in with those two as well. as for powe, something tells me to try to hold onto him… especially since his value is low.

I don’t understand why everyone complains that our young guys aren’t good and then when they play well, they want to trade them. There’s no reason why Allen won’t continue to play well when Paul gets back. If when Paul comes back for a while and the two of them are not meshing then that’s a different story.

by furball2323 on Jan 9, 2007 7:11 PM EST reply actions

I think allen’s good play has hurt wally more than anybody. I dont see why ainge wouldnt be trying to trade wally away for a big or point. When pierce comes back, i think they’ll have a legitament supporting cast in allen and jefferson with green, west and/or gomes being able to provide more than enough on O to succeed

by tripledouble on Jan 9, 2007 7:17 PM EST reply actions

I agree, furball. We want these guys to mature and play well so we can win, then when they play well, see ya! LOL Do we want guys on the team that can play or not? Geez.

by Bankshot on Jan 9, 2007 7:18 PM EST reply actions

Besides, Tony Allen is singlehandedly keeping us from being the worst defensive team in the league. Defense wins championships and if you are not getting Gerald Wallace or the like in return, Tony better remain a Celtic.

See my post in Celtics General Talk

“TONY ALLEN (real deal or luck streak)”

Steal a line from Geico

It’d be so stupid to trade Tony, not even a cave man would do it

Mike Fine says we have a 2nd first round pick from the Jiri Welsch deal this year. Didn’t we trade it to Phoenix for Rondo.

by Little D on Jan 9, 2007 7:24 PM EST reply actions

Little D i’m not clear on that either…did we give up our second round or give them cleveland’s 07 first??

by tripledouble on Jan 9, 2007 7:35 PM EST reply actions

We gave up Cleveland’s 1st round pick in the Rondo deal.

by footey on Jan 9, 2007 7:44 PM EST reply actions

Fine apparently forgot the Cs traded Cleveland’s 2007 first round pick for Phoenix’s 2006 pick that was used on Rondo. The Celtics also get the better of their or Golden State’s (obtained for Walter McCarty via Phoenix I believe) second round pick this year, and the lower gets sent to Minnesota I believe as a result of last year’s Wally-Ricky deal.

by hankfinkel on Jan 9, 2007 7:45 PM EST reply actions

Trade Wally, even if it’s for a bag of potpourri I’d be down for it. I like Tony Allen… people can knock his 6 turnovers the other game, but when you get 7 steals that’s a net of 1 additional possessions. He can score, he is the only one who is constantly attacking the hoop, the only one playing real scrappy and tough defense, his shot has improved (including 3ptr), and the big reason he dribbles down the court himself is b/c there’s no PG ahead of him… they’re all hanging back waiting to “set up” the offense. If TA gets traded for garbage then I’ll be mad. Get rid of Wally.

by TomHamilton30 on Jan 9, 2007 7:46 PM EST reply actions

Aside from blowing the Cavs 2007 pick, Mike totally left out the point that Tony, Gerald and Paul all can’t play at the same time. If two of those three guys are going to get big minutes in the long-term, either Tony or Gerald has to go somewhere. Both have too much value to play just back up minutes. While this isn’t the case now, in 1-2 years we’ll need to figure out a the right combo, either GG/PP or TA/PP and deal the guy that is left out to capitalize on his value.

by Green17 on Jan 9, 2007 8:05 PM EST reply actions

I liked what the trio of Tony, PP and AL were doing before Paul’s injury. Perhaps we should just chill and see what we have. Don’t get me wrong though, if an opportunity to get a player like Gasol, or someone along those lines comes along and Tony is part of the package, I am all for it(as long as AL is staying)…in the mean time, lets just see how this trio plays out. I have a god feeling about it. We take care of 3 majors with this trio…in the sense of:

1.We got a quality slasher(Tony)
2.We got quality low-post scoring presense(Big AL)
3.We got a quality isolation guy(PP)

..and they can all defend!!
..just add a Center(KPerkins) and a not-so flashy but steady pg(DWest), and we might be a better team than most think.

by cocofan on Jan 9, 2007 8:13 PM EST reply actions

i’m glad tony’s playing well, but on a team thats lost twice as many games as its one there should be very few untouchables.
if tony (the real deal or hot streak) can net us a player that fills a position of need then i say pull the trigger.
right now our biggest need is for a defensive minded big who can make up for al’s short comings in that area.

Milwaukee is hurting big time and may be willing to pull the trigger on a stop gap move.
gadzuric for scal, tony and kandi.

and before you go ripping this trade remember… 12 and 21

by arctic 3.0 on Jan 9, 2007 8:15 PM EST reply actions

We took the route to draft young players and develop them. TA is now understanding his role. He does at times over dribble and get himself into trouble, but right now that is his biggest fault and it is easily correctable. When he started in his first year alongside PP he did a good job. Now he is a better player. I don’t understand why we would want to trade him when he’s finally becoming the player it was thought that he would be. If TA were to be traded we would need to get an upper tier player as part of any deal. Forget the poor team record. This is traceable to many problems and it would seem that TA is the least of them.

by TrueGreen on Jan 9, 2007 8:41 PM EST reply actions

artic 3.0 “and before you go ripping this trade remember… 12 and 21”

this is exactly why i wouldn’t want to trade TA right now. There is no one in the league that we can get for him that is going to make us a championship contender this year. so if we do make a trade for a decent player we’ll prolly end up making the playoffs and leaving in the first or second round. instead we should just keep developing players and hope for a good lotery pick. Lets see what happens when PP comes back before we do anything with TA.
Keep the faith restore the pride. Go C’s

Arctic, I’m assuming you posted that just to get a bunch of indignant responses about how insane you are… but I’m taking the bait anyway…

Wait a second, did you just suggest trading Tony Allen ( others) for Dan Gadzuric??? You mean the same Gadzuric that’s not even as good as Kandi or Scal? He’s like a poor man’s Perkins. Tony Allen is an up and coming impact player – on offense and defense. This IS a joke, right?

by Dino, Alla and Stojko on Jan 9, 2007 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Why trade Allen when it seems he is starting to play well? What you get in return is probably a lateral move talent wise. When PP
returns Wally will be ready to rest his ankles. Or something else will be bothering him.

by Greg37 on Jan 9, 2007 9:23 PM EST reply actions

To me it would have to be a whopper of a trade to throw Allen in right now. Unless it got us a very accomplished big man or point, I wouldn’t pull the trigger on Allen. Moving Wally right now should be priorty #1 and it gives that many more minutes for the likes of Green and Allen. I am one who doubts there is much value in Wally’s trade value, but if an expiring contract can come back it is addition through subtraction for this team.

One other unrelated point, I would like to see the Cs shoot a lot less 3s than they have been. I’d rather see more dumping it in to Al, Pierce/Allen slashing to the hoop, etc.

by bceltfan on Jan 9, 2007 9:25 PM EST reply actions

There is a logjam on the wing, plain and simple. If Danny can convert Tony Allen into a bigger player or a decent draft pick, he should do it without hesitation.

We also have some salary issues coming up in a year or two – we can’t keep all the kids we have… we just can’t afford to. There are several players ahead of Tony on my pecking order… West, Rondo, Jefferson, Perk, Gerald, Gomes, Telfair… we should keep all those guys before Tony, they are more valuable, IMO.

by Albin on Jan 9, 2007 9:52 PM EST reply actions

Telfair with Wally trade away. Gomes a backup at best Powe far more upside at the 4 (young Wallace except can score). Green keeper for SURE along with Big AL.
Pierce will have to grin it for a couple. I would trade TA for the right player. West is not a point and unless he can shoot will be a back-up. Perk fuctional back-up at the 5. Rondo I would not trade he will develop a outside shot within 2 years. He makes them all better as we can see when he is on the floor with the starters. DOC Please GOD GONE!!!

by wbones1 on Jan 9, 2007 10:14 PM EST reply actions

to compliment big al we need an athletic, defensive minded big who is comfortable guarding both smaller quicker 4’s and 3 pt chucking euro-centers.

thats a little harder to find then a high energy wing. if danny can trade tony for such a player then pull the trigger tigger.

dan gadzuric is such a player, and i believe his weak numbers are deceiving. for the last few years he’s been buried behind maglore, joe smith, bogut and now charlie villanova. last time he got 15 minutes he grabbed 8 boards and blocked 2 shots. given minutes here in boston i believe he could become a consistent 10 pt 8 rebound defensive force.

by BigAlBeezy on Jan 9, 2007 10:59 PM EST reply actions

Hey Furball, you know why they want to trade Tony? cause we thrive here on “Potential”; We like to believe aour players will be better that excellent if given enough time, like 4 or 5 years. Wwe love to dream about their limitless potential cause there is no limit to Potential. As soon as a young player like Tony shows what he can do, he is no longer atractive cause his potential is no longer imaginable; we get to see that he is a very good player but we want potential; we dont like to be robbed of our vision of how good our youts can really be. So we want to get rid of Tony cause he has reached a big portion of his potential; now he has to refine his assets and pray tha PP learns to play with him and viceversa. Perk’ potential is slowly dissapointing a lot of fans so soon we will be ready to ship him out. GG is believed to have so much potential that we dont care if he doesnt rebound well for a 6.8 SF; has a mediocre jumper; loves to stay at the 3 point land, a la Lafrenz; but can dunk wild a few times; like Tony has. But he has so much POTENTIAL that we are going to wait for him forever to start mixing it up underneath the basket, like PP does and who is only 6.6. I think that Tony has more rebounds per minute played than GG, but OH!, GG has more potential. So everyday we get a new post about trading Tony. We just want him out so wecan continue dreaming about potential. Thank You.

by Reyquila on Jan 9, 2007 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Coco, amigo, sorry to disagree with your perception that PP thrives on isolation. Are you watching games? I wouldnt call it “isolation” every time PP tries his spin moves and he is suddenly surrounded by 4 defenders more often than not. You are right about us having 3 top players at their positions, but hard to swallow that isolation on PP. How many TO’s a game does PP commit cause he cant dribble thru 3 guys at least, on his isolation moves?

by Reyquila on Jan 9, 2007 11:08 PM EST reply actions

Tony referred to Paul as a “post player” and a “floor general”. Tony is not that smart of a guy, and I thought sal-mon was brain food.

He’s trade bait, but not for peanuts. I think that we could make a nice trade that included him and a couple of other guys to get a player who could help us looking forward.

Danny Ainge was yesterday in Madrid, he watched the game between Real Madrid and Unics Kazan of Russia. It´s scheduled that he attend to 8 games more these days. Maybe next year we´ll see a european player in Boston.

Well, the fact that TA is playing well and HAS value is always a good thing.

But replacing him on the wing will be difficult unless the C’s pick up a defensive minded swingman. If PP and Gerald are your guys at SF/SG you need someone to come in and play D on the opposing teams best wing player. Pierce plays capable D, but to ask him to score, board, pass AND play lockdown D is alot. GG is a good stretch away from holding down his man on defense.

by LuckyNumber07 on Jan 10, 2007 6:31 AM EST reply actions

TA is consistently doing many good things on the court. He’s hitting outside shots, slashing to the hole, rebounding and playin great d. Most importantly he is playing with confidence. We need more aggressive team that TA exudes.

by Powe on Jan 10, 2007 8:12 AM EST reply actions

wally, telfair and tony allen for jason kidd who clearly needs a change of scenery. Nj can then trade carter and start rebuilding in earnest.

by Red2 on Jan 10, 2007 8:57 AM EST reply actions

T. Allen is an untouchable now. Why? Because he plays D and that is what we are worst at and what we must have. And as far as not having enough time at that positon for Paul, Wally Gerald, Tony. Please, give me a break. We are in need of good players in order to get to 500 and then into the playoffs. We are not tweaking a championship team. The Celtics have donated to Dan Gadzuric his best career games. He’s full of energy but I think Powe could do that (although a little shorter).

by Wildblu1 on Jan 10, 2007 10:03 AM EST reply actions

Ive always said Gadzuric would be a good addition to our team. I would trade Perk for him mano a mano w/o blinking. Of course, the Bucks would not go for it.

by Reyquila on Jan 10, 2007 10:31 AM EST reply actions

Why kep Tony when he could develop into another Joe Johnson in another team? Give Tony his opportunity, trade him now; after all all he has done is improve his trade value; thats all he is good for. He has little potential left; what you see now is what youll see tomorrow, ecept he will improve his jump shot; but then, thats not enough potential left in his tank to make us keep him. We only want youts with unlimited potential.

by Reyquila on Jan 10, 2007 10:36 AM EST reply actions

To tell you the truth i would much rather have tony start than wally. Wally could get you 25 points but the guy who he is defending will have a career night. Tony could get you from 15-20 points in a starting role and limit his guy to his average or below scoring average.Offensive is overrated when you cant stop the other team from scoring. You could also give Paul the easier defense matchup. Tony has alot more enery and younger.I just dont see wallys place on this team maybe if we were competitive and would be a nice piece but on a rebuilding team he is taking minutes from some of our key young guys we are depending on to be here long term.

by gizardoe on Jan 10, 2007 10:41 AM EST reply actions

its silly to even discuss this. trades need to be considered in context and noone should be untouchable. Theo proved that with nomar — the “face of the franchise”.

Look at the extreme cases:
TA straight up for TDuncan? Sure in a second!
TA straight up for rights to vinny baker? never!

Its the context…

by TBreezy on Jan 10, 2007 11:38 AM EST reply actions

Based on the Injuries, what about this starting line up?:

Al
Gomes
Tony
Gerald
Rajon

by Fredy_7 on Jan 10, 2007 11:53 AM EST reply actions

Tony is exactly what a lot of teams would love to have right now, which is why we shouldnt trade him. A player that scores his points attacking the basket, draws fouls, has seemingly inexhaustable energy, and can be a shut down defender, is a player to hold on to. I truly despised whenever tony was on the court in the beginning of the season, but my what a turnaround. Tony’s play lately has been a welcomed surprise and one of the things keeping them in games, with the teams current makeup (sans Paul Pierce). So yes Tony Allen is extremely tradeable which is why we shouldn’t trade him.

by Celtic on Jan 10, 2007 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I think if Green could turn into a shut down defender, Allen would be gone. Until then, I dont see how they can get rid of him. Hes too valuable. trade wally and theo with gomes and west. Any combination to get what we need.

by cos on Jan 10, 2007 2:22 PM EST reply actions

We’ve been waiting for years for our youngsters to become reliable veterans, and when one of them does… we want to trade him?! WTF?!
