Guys,
Please elucidate. Why Juwan Howard? What has he ever done to help a team win? Especially in the last few years. It’s like the guy is living off the reputation he gained way back in Washington YEARS ago. He’s been a huge letdown everywhere he’s played since then.
Why do you think he’s traded every 18 months? He shows up, coaches and GMs get disenchanted real fast, and he’s traded.
The guy has played in the playoffs three times his whole career. Once in Washington, once for Dallas and last year for Houston.
In Houston he struggled with quicker bigs. His shot was inconsistent. He didn’t play well with Yao (the biggest problem) at all.
His defense was fine and his board work was fine. Nothing exceptional but fine. His offense was fine as long as the ball was in his hands otherwise he didn’t move well without the ball and limited his teammates movements off the ball making the offense predictable (more predictable I should say).
Physically he has decreased over the last 3 years. He used to be able to handle the ball and bring it up the floor. He doesn’t have it in him anymore. But he still has two years. But not as a primary big off the bench unless he has a renaissance like McDyess but there is no reason for that. Antonio was coming off injuries, no reason for Juwan to drastically change.
Still … he’s a solid player that could help us. If we signed him I’d like us to waive Powe and bring in a centre. He isn’t good enough to cure our post needs. It will a group effort and for that we need someone 6-10 who can block a shot or at least take up space with a wide body.
Jackie Butler. I’m a fan of the talent. Not at the attitude he brings to working hard. I’m hesitant but very interested.
There is probably a good reason why Jackie Butler can’t seem to stay with a team. He’s big and has scoring skills, yet he keeps getting moved. You have to ask yourself why.
As for Juwan Howard, I’d pass on him in hopes that a true back-up center turned up. A back-up point guard wouldn’t hurt either.

No to Jackie Butler…..we are well past the point of having clueless 22-year olds on our team. No idea how to play the NBA game at this point but he has the chance to be a contributor in 3-4 years. Bad fit for what we are trying to accomplish today.
Yes to Juwan Howard if no other bigs are in play. He is an upgrade over Scal as a big off the bench which is all we would be asking him to be and can play spot minutes in the middle more effectively than Scal or Powe. A good fit with a veteran team.

HRB Howard isn’t taking Scal’s role. He’s taking Glen’s. We still need Scal for perimeter D and perimeter shooting. We need Leon for defense and hustle. Glen is the all round one with offensive skills. That’s where Howard’s minutes will be.
Scal might see a small decrease in minutes but not much.
There really is no need for Howard. We need to waive someone (Powe) and bring in a centre even if we sign Howard. He’s a small upgrade.
Brick,
On the Foster thing I had to chuckle a bit. I love Foster and he would be perfect for this team, but I can’t imagine Larry basically giving the championship to his old pal Danny. Can you imagine all the conspiracy talks around the league? First Mchale gift wraps KG, then Larry puts the nail in the coffin with Jeff Foster. Ouch.
To Who’s comments: Yeah, I agree that Howard might take Glen’s minutes which is definitely worrisome. I think right now it is clear that Davis is the 3rd best big on the C’s. I do think that Howard is a bit better than Scals overall. So it would really come down to coaching and Doc’s ability (or inability) to use the correct player depending on matchup. Howard would most likely look great playing with the Trio and with he and Glen off the bench up front we would be looking pretty solid. Especially with Scal, Powe, and Pollard all having useful talents for specific matchups/situations behind them.

Jelani McCoy still looks a great option to me. He doesn’t need the ball. He understands his role. He plays good defense. He does solid work on the glass. He finishes anything around the rim.
Butler and Howard both need the ball in their hands to be effective and neither plays any quality defense. Howard is a solid rebounder and Butler is an alright rebounder.
I want the Celtics to sign PJ Brown and then have PB & J night.

Brick is right about targeting one of those Portland PGs. Makes tons more sense than Juwan Howard.
I still say Howard doesn’t upgrade this team one bit. He isn’t a center and isn’t likely to turn into one at 34 years old. So what does he bring? Scal is a better defender. Davis looks like he plays with much more energy and can score. I don’t understand why anyone wants him.
