Kobe To DC Might Just Work
I'm sorry, I can't help but follow this saga. Marc Stein chatted up his latest thoughts on the Kobe rumors. Quotes after the break.
Phil (Nations Capital): How real is the rumor that the Wiz are going to trade for Kobe?
Marc Stein: Real enough that I wouldn't call it a rumor. Washington's interest, I'm told, is definitely genuine. What we don't know yet is whether Kobe would be amenable to Washington or exactly how much the Wiz would be willing to part with. But the Lakers would be hard-pressed to do better than a package that features Gilbert Arenas and (if they're lucky) Andray Blatche . . . as long as Gil were willing to agree to a contract extension with his hometown Lakers as opposed to opting out at season's end.
I am no way saying that this is imminent. But our man Sam Smith reported in today's Chicago Tribune that there's a growing buzz about the Wiz getting involved in the Kobe Sweepstakes and I've since heard that there's legit smoke here. We'll have to see what Kobe thinks of sharing a city with the president, since he wields more power than anyone in the NBA with the league's only active no-trade clause. It would be a trio in the East, for starters. Which makes a huge difference. Plus teams are going smaller and smaller now -- smaller than they were three years ago -- so Butler and Jamison are big enough to work with. The Lakers might not be having so much friction with No. 24 if they had held onto Butler. I have to admit that I thought it was the right move at the time to gamble on Kwame, but Butler proved me (and the Lakers, more importantly) way wrong. Butler, Odom and Kobe would be a decent core now with the way Caron has developed.

Man I’m loving this. Does anyone else see some sweet payback parallel between the Yanks demise and the Sox rise and the Lakers demise and the Cs rise?

Jamison is expiring too. Washington would have some options to tweak that roster.
If only Haywood and Thomas weren’t on the books! They’re dogging Washington’s cap. They’d need to offload Deshawn Stevenson too, he’s only the roster because he plays well with Gil.
It’s an interesting one. Surprised they are so willing to give up Gilbert, but if they are they jump to the head of the queue.
Wizards would make out amazing in this trade if it goes down…Arenas was opting out anyways and even though he says he wants to come back to DC I see him leaving for more money

Washington shouldn’t include Blatche. Gilbert Arenas beats every other offer available right now. No need to include the youngster.
Looking forward to seeing Blatche on opening night. He has been getting good reviews in pre-season. Big unknown for Washington and their post-season hopes.
Washington should offer Jamison and his expiring deal plus Nick Young for Jermaine. Now that would be interesting.
Who, that would be interesting to get both Jermaine and Kobe. Although they likely just don’t have enough bodies to do both moves, and I can’t see Abe Pollin having two $20m players.
As far as Arenas’ opt-out, I think he’ll technically opt out even if he has no desire to leave (wherever he may be playing). Arenas does not currently have a max contract, so any extension he’d sign is less than he ‘could’ get as a max player (including bigger yearly raises).

I think they have enough bodies but the scenario is incredibly unlikely (won’t happen). I think Jermaine by himself would be an interesting deal. It would help shore up their defence which is their biggest weakness. They don’t have a problem putting the ball in the basket. Kobe doesn’t change them very much.
Agree with you bullsblogger on Arenas, overwhelmingly likely to remain in Washington. I wouldn’t be worried about him opting out.
As for A-Rod’s opt-out announcement, as someone commmented on the the radio today, it’s the only significant thing he’s ever done post-season. So cut the guy some slack.
Yankee fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief to see him and his bloated contract gone forever.
The Red Sox should forget about A-Rod. Just resign Lowell for 3-4 years at fair market and call it a day. Hopefully Epstein learned something from the 2004 season, when he let Orlando Cabrera walk to go jousting after Renteria.
No one can offer Gilbert more money then Washington, so I don’t think he goes anywhere. Still, this is the trade that makes the most sense for LA, the most sense for Kobe, and the most sense for Washington.

Agree w Brickowski re Lowell and Cabrera/Renteria analogy. My hope is that 2 yrs @ $12 mil or 3 yrs @ $30 mil can get it done but we have the JD Drew contract as show & tell problem. Please no A-Rod. He really shoved the Texas subsidy up the Yanks wazoo. No way they re-sign him.
Would rather have Arenas in East than Kobe. Much more fun and not as dangerous.
well what I mean is that he can get the most money from whoever is currently paying him. If he gets traded to L.A. and opts out, then L.A. can pay him the most. Even as a max-level player he’ll make less than Bryant.
I’d consider it if I was Washington, but they’d still have no interior defense (and be thin up front in general, especially if they deal Blatche), so perhaps after acquiring Kobe they could deal Jamison for several average players.

Less concerned with what Washington is doing (trading for Kobe would severely guy their talent base unless they could capture some of the talent in the “waiver poole.”
My concern is the trade Jersey just made to clear roster room. Jason Kidd, Carter, and Jeff make that a VERY attractive destination for Howard or Walker, and it’s possible Thorn would make a run at both. Same holds true for Detroit who could use Howard’s toughness/rebounding/defense and he has history in Mich.
More concerned with one of the other Eastern contenders (NJ, Det, Miami) picking up Walker and/or Howard.
I really doubt Kobe is going anywhere . . .
There’s not way Kobe would agree to be traded to Washington without Arenas playing there.

I think it makes sense for everyone. Arenas would fill the seats in LA – his personality is perfect. And he’s no slouch. The Deng deal is way worse. But it all depends on what LA’s intentions are.
If they are legitimately looking to trade him. All this talk could be just that, talk.
Much like how the Sox ‘try’ to trade Manny every offseason – you can never realistically get equal value back.
My opinion is that it’s all a smokescreen in an attempt to keep Kobe happy.

No way Kobe agrees to playing in Washington, period. And RLJames? No way do Kobe & Agent Zero fit on a court together. Simply not enough ball.
And from the Lakers viewpoint… Kobe for Arenas? Holy gods, are you guys Arenas-homers? No way in HELL does Gilbert=Kobe! If he goes, at this point in time, it’ll be Chicago.
At the end of the day, I think Kobe’ll be in a Lakers uniform for the duration… until this time next year.
