Ubuntu

Steve Bulpett reports:
During the first days of training camp in Italy, the team has chosen the word "ubuntu" to finish its post-practice moment with coach Doc Rivers.
The word has its origin in the Bantu languages of Southern Africa and is used to describe a philosophy of life that promotes the greater good rather than individual success. Rivers read about the philosophy during the summer as it related to the teachings of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and said it denotes a belief that one person cannot be successful if those around him are not. Nobody wins unless everybody wins, if you will.
The coach asked Gabe Pruitt, Glen Davis, Brandon Wallace and Jackie Manuel to study the concept of ubuntu, and the rookies made a presentation to the team last Saturday before the flight to Italy.
"The rookies did a good job explaining it," center Kendrick Perkins said. "They made a great presentation. We’ve got some very intelligent rookies. It’s just our team motto this year. It’s what we’re living by - ubuntu. We stick together. That’s basically what I think it means, just bringing everyone together, everybody sticking together through thick and thin. I think it brings team unity. It’s very unique. I think if we live by it, we’ll be all right."
I know this is cheesy training camp, morale building stuff. I know that. But you know what? I don't care. I think it is great. The past few years have been defined by lack of definition. The team has had no identity (or at least not one they'd like to have). I would have been very easy for the team to come in and say "this is all about the big three and we are their support group." That would actually sound like a decent plan. Instead, they are at least making an attempt to level things out and unify the team. It isn't just one goal shared by the group, it is a united effort to reach that goal.
Call me cheesy if you want, but I like it. Ubuntu.

Dumb.
Win games first, then you can pretend you are Phil Jackson.

The idea of putting team success before individual glory is
a good one in any language.

yeah, Ubuntu is probably the largest distribution of Linux. I thought everybody knew the word…

pardon my ignorance….

Well, cheesiness, is Doc Rivers’ forte, not X’s and O’s.
I guess Desmond Tutu wouldn’t approve of all the ISOs that Rivers likes. Maybe now he’ll install an ubuntu motion offense.

am a huge ubuntu linux fan go celtics ;D

The Celtics had a huge turnover in personnel. You need them to bond as a team. That’s important. I don’t understand all the negativity. It makes no sense. Are you negative Celtic “fans” really routing for them to succeed, or do you want them to fail so you can all crow how right you were about them?

I just customized a jersey “UBUNTU” the number is 17. We’ll see how that goes…..

Ubuntu is fine – just rememeber to other words “Runtu and Wintu”
by Master Po on Oct 4, 2007 8:17 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
“UBUNTU” or not, the Patriots did it without going overseas to find the concept. The concept is far from original but getting the “rookies” to explain it must have been a blast. I wonder whether Gerald Green, not know for being “cerebral”, could have explained it or even understood it?
Having “college” rookies at least clears one hurdle…they should be FASTER on the uptake!

Po, you made my day!
For my part, I think Two Ton Tony Galento’s philosophically epiphantic chaunt of Murdda u the Bum u(s) is perhaps more closely aligned to the actuality that is the NBA…Enough said.

It’s just another word for what should be the NORM for any “teamâ€.
To me, the picture that goes with this article is far better than the silly word.
Look at the picture.
It’s a beautiful picture.
30 days until game 1.

On the flip side of this is Allen Iverson getting sued for $40K for ditching commitements on book signing in Omaha, Neb.
I still can’t believe that roughly half the posters were ever in favor of getting this guy to be a Celtic. Not just that he wouldn’t get us to a banner, but the whole mess that is Iverson.
Maybe it can be like AA and Pierce can bring him to the next meeting. Hi, my name is Al, and I have a Ubunta problems.
I’m all for redemption but you can give guys like Iverson, O.J., Mike Tyson a 4th, 5th, 6th chance and more and they never get it.
I sneaked a peak at part of the rest of the day schedule:
- pottery class at 3:00 pm
- dealing postively with your inner voice at 7:00 pm

Addition by subtraction for Omaha. Docextention, get ready for the standard “nobody plays harder” and “he leaves it all on the court”. The thugster is by far the most overrated and selfish player in NBA history. Not even close. I feel for George Karl.
As long as Rivers lasts as coach, his players should have a common word to humor themselves by.
Funny posts, Brick and Connor.

docextension, I think you’ve gone way too far with the Iverson thing. Comparing him to a convicted rapist and convicted woman-batterer and probable murderer is completely over the line. Aside from a bar-room brawl in college, Iverson’s never been in trouble with the law.
As for UBUNTU – I like it. And for all those making fun of Doc for using it, just think how silly Phil Jackson’s tactics would have been if he were coaching the Washington Bullets back then instead of the greatest basketball player alive. Every coach uses corny, motivational tactics. Bill Belichick splices game footage with the Simpsons from time to time, but no one makes fun of him because he happens to win games.
Just wait til this team wins 55 gams and coasts to the ECF; then the same people who blamed Doc for all of the losing will give him no credit for the winning. Frauds! Every one of you front-running doc-bashers. Frauds, I say!

Based on a philosophy developed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I don’t know, but that could be vaguely political ;) Anyway, with Doc at the helm we could use any slogan and it still ain’t going to get the job done. I just hope the veterans stick together and when Doc calls time out with five seconds left and draws up a play for the winning basket, the veterans just go out and make up the winning play themselves. Please get Larry Brown.

Bounding, that’s hysterical. Well done.
by The Real Large James on Oct 4, 2007 10:59 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Larry Brown is over rated. He got his ring by jumping into a team that already knew what it was doing. All he had to do was NOT SCREW UP. Which he did successfully. Even Doc would’ve won a ring with that crew. That said, even doc shouldn’t be able to screw up this team too much as KG/Ray Allen/Pierce should be running the show. Telling him when to play whom.

Sounds a little too communistic to me. All teams at all levels do this kind of stuff, but do we have to advertise it? Disco Stu doesn’t advertise.

Really, Migit, have you too got the Hollinger curse (misrepresented facts)? The college brawl occurred in a BOWLING ALLEY. While Iverson was eventually “pardoned” by the Govenor of Virginia ( a black African American, perhaps to compensate for other atrocities unfairly levied against blacks) Iverson has had many confrontations with law enforcement…these were “attributed” to his ill advised association with the “wrong kind” of people). As to his lack of leadership and confrontations with his coaches….Just another example of “living on the edge” where wealth and celebrity status has it’s own form of justice.
In all fairness, perhaps it’s wrong to identify any individual with another wrong-doer, but if the shoe fits….

The reason why many here are negative is they are “protecting themselves” in case this team fails. That way they won’t look like fools if things go wrong. Understandable, but that’s not the approach I’m taking.
I have high expectations, and I’m going to have fun with this team. My season tickets will be well worth it. I like the Unbunto stuff. That pic is great, like Garnett is the leader of a great tribe of warriors, yes including Scalabrine.
by ChiefDK on Oct 4, 2007 11:32 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The unbuntu stuff is lame and will get too much airtime. How about they steal a phrase from Al Davis: Just Win Baby.
With all of you unrealistically setting goals for this team (NBA championship, 55 wins) this team needs ANYTHING to deflect the heat when they reveal themselves as a 45-48 win team that they are.
You guys are all expecting too much. Sit back, have fun with these guys. They could be the most fun team we’ve had in a while. With a little luck we can go deep.

Iverson is a scummy person.
I’m related to someone who’s worked with Iverson over the years in various photo shoots.
He’s got nothing but bad things to say about Iverson.
The way he is, the way he talks, even around his own children.
Based on those first hand conversations, I’m quite happy this punk isn’t in green.
The same person says Giambi is the nicest athlete he’s ever worked with.

Desmond Tutu mentions Ubuntu in his book “No Future Without Forgiveness” http://www.amazon.com/Future-Without-Forgiveness-Desmond-Tutu/dp/0385496907
Tutu explains Ubuntu as the idea that, “My humanity is caught up, is extricable bound up, in yours. We belong in a bundle of life… a person is a person through other persons.†(p.31)
I read Tutu’s book in college and became enamored with the idea of Ubuntu. I actually spent a semester in South Africa and arrived with a desire to learn more about this concept. When I asked around, I could not find any information about it. Nobody knew what I was talking about. I lived with, and interacted with a number of native South Africans who speak multiple “Bantu languages” (Xhosa, Zulu, etc.) as well as an incredibly knowledgeable anthropologist. Nobody knew what Ubuntu was. I think Tutu makes the idea seem much more prevalent and influential than it really is. I do like it as a team concept – the idea that I exist in relation to you and, like it or not we are bound up in the same web of being. That pretty much describes a basketball team. You don’t have to like each other, but you have to work together to succeed.
by Adam on Oct 4, 2007 2:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Doc did his homework and now he is building a team to play together after three years of having to build a team to play. My Bet is doc will produce a winner with these guys and they will all respect him anf heap praises on him. Keep it up Doc. We are counting on you.

mcpu40,
I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of Iverson, but I completely agree about being glad he’s not in green, both because of his ’’I’m the stupidest, most ignorant thug in the room’’ demeanor and his volume-shooting approach to the game.
by Cousin It on Oct 4, 2007 2:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I normally wouldn’t make a comment like mine prior, but it’s true.
This person I know does TONS of photo shoots with all kinds of high profile athletes and I love picking his brain about these athletes and what they’re really like.
Iverson is on the bottom of his list.
One example detailed a photo shoot at Iverson’s home.
Iverson came out, unprepared, swearing and cussing at the photo crew, hair in pigtails, directly in front of his own children, and was ‘not nice’ all day.
This is one of several photo shoots he’s had with Iverson…just generally a yucky perception overall.

Migit, if a Rivers-coached team wins 55 games and reaches the ECF please keep my moniker in your memory. If it ever happens during Rivers’ tenure, I will fly there and buy a keg for you and your friends and refill it as necessary over a C’s game. I will absolutely declare myself a fraud.
Unless a caricature of Rivers is on the bench, someone else is making coaching decisions, or as Large James said, the players are simply ignoring Rivers, there is no way that this team or any other team he coaches wins 55 games. ECF requires competent game-coaching decisions that Rivers simply isn’t capable of making.
Large James, we agree on something.
