Pierce/LeBron Rivalry

TrueHoop has an interesting look at the Paul Pierce vs. LeBron James rivalry.

That "have a history" link Windhorst included is to a 2006 Windhorst piece making a pretty convincing case that as much as rivalries with Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, or Kobe Bryant may be hyped, Pierce is James' truest rival in the NBA.

At the time of Windhorst's article they had faced each other more than any other stars. They had all kinds of big scoring games against each other. Unlike a lot of more hyped rivals for James, these two have actually spent a lot of time guarding each other.

Paul must have not been feeling well last night because he was unusually lethargic considering this budding “rivalry”.

Please do not compare Lebron to Pierce.

by Reyquila on Nov 28, 2007 7:12 PM EST reply actions

the rivalry exists. i really like pp and admire all he has done and will do for the c’s- but this does not feel like a magic-bird rivalry, i.e. a rivalry of equals. lebron is flat out a better player. nothing against pp.

Rivalry?? this is a joke right? Lebron is superior not only offensively against pierce meaning he can do whatever he wants but also defensively where pierce can’t do anything he wants.

Pierce can play exceptional agains’t most players in the league but against lebron there is no match. Cleveland realistically is a mediocre team and james been playing very avg but last night i think he was up to the challenge and i think he was really mad at all the talking the big three were doing.(kg yap yap yap)

Talking about kg, i mean how do get outplayed by drew gooden out of all people??

I’m being hard but we have to win against these kind of teams . It wont matter to beat down teams like nj 10 times in a row. Orlando, cavs, spurs are the sort of team we have to beat to get anywhere

You guys only have to consider whether a trio of Lebron, Garnett and Allen, the guy who missed the two clutch shots last night would have a better chance of winning a championship than PP, Garnett and Allen, that guy who missed the two clutch shots last night? I just dont want Ray Allen to be confussed with Tony Allen. I dont see any rivalry between 2 players that have different quantities of the same abilities. PP is a very good player; Lebron is in the league of Bird, Magic, Jordan, Kobe (as a scorer), Nash, Howard, Garnett, and other faccimilies. No offense to PP fans, but reality cannot be denied.

by Reyquila on Nov 28, 2007 7:55 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, Bron sure does shut PP down allright, that game were he held him to 50 last year, amazing…

All comparisons aside — when these two are on the court against each other it is the fiercest rivalry between two players in the league. Other rivalries like Dirk/Nash & Duncan/Shaq may be closer talent-wise, but they just don’t have the bad blood that these two have.

These two hate each other, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

KG and Duncan have something going too….wait for that matchup

Pierce has a chance to make the All-Star team this year for the
East. James is a lock to start the game.

Lebron > Pierce
Lebron = Jordan – 6 titles
Pierce = Iverson

by FatJohn on Nov 28, 2007 9:24 PM EST reply actions

really, until this year I would argue that pp is still better than lebron, lebron doesn’t play d like pierce, doesn’t rebound like pierce and isn’t as good a shooter. physically he is amazing, but how many times have we seen him dribble around to no purpose. this year of course lebron is putting the lie to all that, those numbers of his just cant be denied. good for him, but its just happened this year

by chicagogreen on Nov 28, 2007 11:30 PM EST reply actions

and can we leave allstar picks out of this, vince makes it when he is hurt, is anybody here willing to argue that little baby vince is better than pierce, god I hope not

by chicagogreen on Nov 28, 2007 11:31 PM EST reply actions

Lebron passed PP last season, in terms of ability and consistancy.

Celts can’t get into this kind of chippy talk with teams like the Cavs. It distracts them from what they’re trying to do: Win games.

You notice the Spurs don’t chatter except to each other.

Who cares about all this rivalry bogus. Let’s go out and beat some teams, preferably the elite teams. Let others worry about matching up with us and let’s not support the media in making it a battle of the big 3 against other star players.

LeBron is by far the best player in the world…by miles…Pierce better get his “pound of flesh” by turning this into a Celts/Cavs rivalry because a man to man duel will not be close….you’ve got KG vs Gooden tuesday nite and PP is DEMANDING the ball at the 3 pt line at crunch time..not a good thing

by Motown on Nov 29, 2007 8:16 AM EST reply actions

FatJohn, Pierce is about as comparable to the thugster as Jordan is to JR Rider. Pierce is not a team/coach killer.

What I was saying is that Paul, while not nearly the talent the primadonna is, usually steps up when they play the Cavs. He looked unusually flat Tuesday night.

Solid point, Lucky7

Yep, and unlike Carmelo, DWade etc….there is no camaradery(sp) between these two. James and Pierce don’t like each other all that much.

by cocofan on Nov 29, 2007 11:28 AM EST reply actions

Rivalries aren’t just about which player is better than the other, it’s about competition and Pierce does give Lebron good competition. The thing I am astonished has not been mentioned whatsoever is the incident during a past preseason game where Pierce was accused of spitting on the Cavs bench – that’s when it got really heated IIRC…
