Posey day-to-day

News on Posey's injury via RealGM :

The Boston Celtics announced on Thursday that forward James Posey is experiencing low back spasms as a result of a lumbar disc herniation confirmed by MRI at New England Baptist Hospital.

He is undergoing appropriate treatment by the medical staff and is listed as day-to-day. Posey sustained the injury during the second quarter of last night’s game against the Denver Nuggets at the TD Banknorth Garden.

I think I speak for everybody in wishing Posey a quick and healthy recovery.

Thanks for the update. Is that something that he should fully recover from, or is it potentially chronic? Is there a doctor in the house (other than the coach)?

Hi. I am a chiropractor AND an orthopedic surgeon. The answer is it depends. It is quite possible that the herniation, although thought to be new, isn’t. There have been good, recent articles in the journal Spine that describe a high error rate on Mri’s and follow up studies in which a “herniation” is identified and then much later blamed on a new incident. If the treating doc didn’t know it was already there they assumed wrongly that it was new.

There is also a growing school of thought that herniations are like gray hair. In other words, you have back pain, you do an mri, there is a herniation, you blame the pain on that. But if you take asymptomatic folks on the street and do an mr on them, 31% of them have good sized hernaitions.

So do hernations cause pain and disfunction? Under certain circumstances and if they are big, almost for sure. The fact that Posey has one and they listed him day to day suggests(to me) its a small one. At least I am hoping. But id sure keep him active BUT not playing until he is feeling 100%.

The big question to know would be if he has numbness or pain down the leg. If not this should not be a problem very soon

they should give him all the time he needs to come back – they’ll need him in the playoffs and i think we’ve already clinched a spot.

Thank you for the enlightening info. Dr.Wahz, very much appreciated.

Dr. Wahz, could you please explain now to us the difference between a “herniation” and a “hernation” as you referred to both in your explanation ;)

He’s day to day but then again, aren’t we all? ;)

Here’s hoping to a speedy recovery to our bench (no offense E. House) ;D

Doc, I’ve got this pain… Just kidding. Hope Posey has a speedy recovery & is back on the floor soon

Wouldn’t be surprised if Posey is out for awhile…there’s nothing really you can do with a strained back except to just wait it out, and since we’re actually expected to do something this year, they’re gonna be extra careful with him since we’re gonna need him bigtime later on in the season when it gets down to the wire.

Dickerson said tonight that he saw Posey in the lockerroom and he was hunched over holding his back like a poor 75-year-old man. Ouch

Thanks, Dr. Wahz, that was encouraging and informative.

ouch. we need this guy big time, but take the time. let it heal and put a corset on him.

I feel your pain PO-sey really i do

by Master Po on Nov 8, 2007 10:46 PM EST reply actions

Dr Wahz, I also thank you for your explanation. It seemed to me that Posey got hurt when he took that charge early on. Whatever is going on I hope he’s not out long. He’s one of the most important guys on the team in many ways. And Master Po, what has happened to the “young Caine” quotes. You can do better than what you just PO sted. (Should the “y” in “young” be a capital letter)?
