C's Avenge Defeat, ...Sort Of
It probably should have been a little easier, but the Celtics did secure a win over the LeBron-less Cavs.
Update: Ok, after actually watching the game (had it DVR'd), I take back the "should have been easier" crack. The game wasn't as close as the final score indicated. They got out to a slow start, but it was a 20 point lead by the middle of the 4th and it was in garbage time that the Cavs closed the gap a little bit.
Some other quick notes:
- Drew Gooden is a little better than I gave him credit for. He's coming along.
- Nice to see Big Baby have another good game. How he lasted to the 2nd round is beyond me.
- When's the last time Pierce and KG scored under 10 points in a game?
- The wins keep piling up though huh? Great teams win ugly games. Next!

This was one of those games where some of the players were showing the effects of the travel and keeping different hours. When they don’t arrive in Miami until 4:30 in the morning on Friday, then have a game at 12:30 on Sunday, it’s a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, Cleveland looked poor as well.
The team still has a lot to work on. They still have periods where they look as though they go through the motions. I was happy to see Doc trust the second unit as much as he did. If he continues to do so, I think the team will be much more consistent. Nevertheless, I predicted we’d go 14-1, but I suppose I’ll have to ‘settle’ for a 13-2 record. A win is a win, and we still have to post “W’s” even in these ugly games.
They won a game most fans thought they would win with Lebron out. Just another step in the journey. I thought Davis looked pretty good. Tommy was pumped up when Davis’ running hook went in!

Is it me or have they been going away from KG the past few games on offense? Is it just because of the way the other teams are playing defense. Or are they running the offense that way right now and it is working. His rebounding and defense seem right there but he is not taking as many shots as he had been. Or at least as many as I thought he would.
It actually seems like he is not having to play big minutes in alot of these wins and they are not having him do so.
It really looks like they are already looking down the road a bit as far as preserving KG for later in the year. The second unit played a lot in this game.
Here is a question. How would our second unit. House, TAllen, Posey, Big Baby/Scalabrine and Pollard/Big baby. Have fared if they played our Starting five from last year? I actually think that this unit might be a bit better. Especially if you take the starting five when Pierce was out all that time.
Its a bit funny to me that trading away all of those guys netted us this team that we have now. It doesnt really make sense to me when I think about it. But I’m not complaining
Good sign to win when starter’s shooting was so bad. Pierce got after it on D. The team D is outstanding. I cannot believe the switching. KG, Posey and Thibodeau (I guess)However even with LeBron I don’t see Cleveland going very far with that bench. They need Varejao.
Props to Danny again for stealing Big Baby. He’s got heart and game. Tony Allen was in one of those T.Allen mental funks. His TO’s compete with his good things
Rondo nailing those 2 12 footers in 3rd Q were nice. And for those whining for PG help, please stop. Eddie House has a good quick trigger and totally gets it both passing and on D.
It is so much fun this year. Ditch the dancers though!!!! Sorry, had to say it.
a win is a win is a win. pp played very energetic defense all the time he was in- a big factor. when it comes to ray’s minutes, a good comparison is the amount of minutes grant hill is getting with the suns. both are older players, not fragile but with a history of injuries. i bet you thar grant is averaging 3-6 minutes less a game with comparable stats, tho they play different positions.
Ray is key. He’s very consistent with finding spots to attack within the flow of the offense, either from deep waters or taking it inside. Both a hold-things-together guy and a take-charge-when needed guy.

I agree on Ray Allen. Just watch any time this team goes from even to a 10 pt lead or from a 10 to a 20 pt lead, usually it is Ray Allen who is right in the middle of the outburst.
I know he has had some 1 for 6 shooting spells but he also has the intagngibles to easily turn a close game to a double digit lead or a double digit lead to a laugher.
Long live the Big 3 and Coach T.

Grant is three years older than Ray and his injuries are much more serious than Rays, and until the last 2 seasons, Ray was one of the players who had the longer streaks of playing without being on injured reserve list.

I just got off the phone with a friend who is a Celtics fan but has no cable. Don’t ask; its a long story. He asked me if there was anyone who surprised me. And I said that I don’t know if his play surprised me, but I was sure surprised that the Celtics got him and that’s James Posey. My friend asked about “Big Baby’s” future starting capabilities. I said maybe, but what I felt was more important was that he was a very smart player who knows his role now. The Celtics won a game today that they should have won — but that can sometimes be a trap game for a team that thinks it is better it really is. The Celtic bench was ready willing and able to carry the team home. Don’t laugh but to me the next big test is the game against Chicago. I can’t remember how many times in recent years the Celtics got outplayed by Chicago when they really should have won if talent should have been the deciding factor. In fact it was a truly awful lose to Chicago that started to be Pitino’s undoing in his last year here. I know the Celtis really haven’t matched up with Chicago for the last couple of years, but still they have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory far too often against the bulls. I am not a Bulls hater, I just want to see the Celtics stomp on a team that seems to give them fits. I think the Celtics are a good team now and getting better as they continue to play together. I just want them to stomp on the Bulls. As for Jeff’s observations about “Big Baby” falling to the second round should we be surprised that basketball intelligence in rookies is not expected (thus valued). I knew that we would have to give up Jefferson and other stuff to get K.G. I did have some regrets about losing Ryan Gomes. In his own way I think “Big Baby” is a more talented Ryan Gomes. Its no accident that both of these players were overlooked by other teams and drafted by the Celtics.
The Celtics are 14-2, they are winning the games they should win. (That doesn’t always happen.) Even though they did not play their best games when they lost they still came close to winning. The Celtics give every indication that they will get better. Their bench is far better than I ever hoped and far better than a lot of casual fans realize. NO they are not championship caliber today, but the more I watch them play together and see them get better, bit by bit, the more I start to think that with a little luck they might actually be a worthy contender by the end of the season.
Good win! It definately messed with my internal clock being inside the garden at noontime haha. I’m happy to see the bench getting opportunities and most importantly experience in the game. This should help in the playoffs. And it’s nice to see Big Baby getting his minutes and doing well!
