I think he has the wrong impression about blogs in terms of the credibility the readers give them. I don’t take anything on this page as gospel, or even remotely true most of the time. The same holds true for newspapers and sometimes even ESPN. I don’t think Jeff, or anyone who posts or writes for Celticsblog, Cheapseats, or any of the other numerous articles, has any real clue what the NBA is truly like from the perspective of a player, Coach, GM, Owner, or anyone else working for an actual NBA team. There’s a lot of interesting commentary, some interesting opinions, and a lot of over zealous fans who think they know how to run a team or make trades, etc, but it is all simply fun and entertaining. I don’t think that a blog is any more or less credible than any form of publishing.
People do seem to read this stuff and equate it with what we do at The Tribune or other media and don’t make much distinction.

No, we don’t Sam. That’s why your Tribune is losing money. Like the Communist News Network (CNN/Al-Jazeera-USA) The New York/Al Quada Times, The Boston Rag, etc etc, Blogs like this one and other sources where a person can hear well-thought out commentary instead of the same old anti-American news crap and the same old Captain Obvious sports crap. And the best thing about the blogs…..real people get to vent….just like now.
Sam’s useless. Blogs are great for many reasons, they are different from “real” journalism, yes. They are more op-ed pieces from fans. But that’s what makes them great. The Sports Guy had a great article about a similar issue a while ago. I’ll try to dig it up.

I think it is funny that he bashes blogs because he thinks it is just people passing off their opinion as if it is journalism.
News flash bucko – journalism hasn’t been opinion free since William Randolph Hearst.
Heck, I’d say it’s a pretty safe argument to say Celticsblog is run with more composure, and is more reliable, than say foxnews or even CNN, in their respective fields.
We had the same problem here in Italy with our Celtics related site being bashed by the NBA basketball weekly magazine’s editor. The problem is, less and less people is reading what the self-appointed basketball gurus are writing, and the fact that “amateurs” like Jeff, or me and Leonardo Ancilli in Italy are taking away a lot of the fans with timely reports and on target criticism is killing them. At first they saw the blogs as a way to deepen their knowledge, to point out some interesting facts they weren’t able to find out. But, now, they are starting to realize that the future is on the net, and they are fighting for survival, landing their pathetic volleys.
In defense of Sam, he WAS being a little tongue in cheek, especially his last paragraph.

Hard to say how tongue in cheek it really was. I mean, how seriously can you take comments about bloggers when he opens by saying he doesn’t read them? Perhaps he reads writing ABOUT bloggers and came to these conclusions. Sort of like NBA beat writers who read other NBA beat writers and include their information when posting THEIR Sunday round-up columns. Sound familiar?
Either way, I give this the big Derrick Coleman: “Well, whoop de d—- doo!”
