If there is any question how great of a player Dennis Johnson was consider this; in 1983 the Cetlics got swept out of the playoffs by the Bucks. They didn’t even get to play the 4-4-4 76ers. They lost to the Bob Lanier Sydney Moncrief Bucks and got swept at that. Despite having young Bird, McHale, Parish and Maxwell in the front court they were at best the fifth or sixth best team in the NBA. Over the summer of 1983 the Celtics made one major aquisition; they traded Rick Robey for Dennis Johnson. The next year the Celtics won over sixty games and beat the Lakers for the title. Take Dennis Johnson away from the Celtics and the Celtics don’t win the title in 84 and might not have won it in 86. The entire legacy of the Bird era would be different. That is how good Dennis Johnson was. And oh by the way, he won the finals MVP averaging over 24 points a game while in Seattle. The only good that can come out of this is maybe they will get around to doing the right thing and put him in the Hall of Fame now.

Hitting me harder today than yesterday – Tried to watch NBA TV last night re DJ as they replayed old games but I just couldn’t.
So glad his number was retired.
but I really wish he could have been back on the Celtic bench as a coach before this happened.
His smile would really be something to see over there on the bench in the seasons to come, as things will surely get get better for us. I wish he could have been a part of the future for the Celtics. I just hate it he is gone.
Maybe itâ€â"¢s me, but Rick Pitino really had a negative impact on our Celtics that we are still trying to recover.
For all Pitino thought he stood for what “Celtic” meant was nothing but hog wash.
The more I’ve thought about it, the more he has angered me in how backwards are team went and how much we are trying to crawl from under this mess.
He never liked Red, Tommy, Coz, Bird, D.J. or anyone else because he didn’t have a hand in any of those championships
See, as much as we talk about Danny, he bleeds “Green” as does M.L Carr, Bird, Hondo, etc. even though they are not here with our team, there hearts still are.
Where as Pitino is somewhere in lala land right now. Anyway enough of my bitching…..I’m just glad I lived in an era where I was able to see Russell, Cowens, Bird & Company
D.J. was a great man and he amplified what it meant to be a Boston Celtic
I agree Po about DJ looking good on the Celtics bench as coach. I heard on the radio today that it was DJ’s dream to be an NBA head coach. All the time we wasted with Doc… I think DJ would have been a great coach for the the Celtics.
