Sports Guy Links
Its official, Bill Simmons is everywhere. Not only does he have his grinning mug on the front page of ESPN, his own Page 2 mini-site, and a blog, but he's spreading his influence over the net. Here is a sampling:
- First Simmons takes on the Global Icon that is LeBron James
- Then he continues the analysis by going to emails from readers
- One of those readers was actually Brian (the Cavalier) from YAYSports.com who proves he's more than just a neato photoshopper.
- The Serious Tip celebrates the 5 year anniversary of Bill's Rules of a True Fan by breaking them each down.
- For his part, Simmons continues his quest to soak in as much college basketball as is humanly possible - and then blog about it.
- And of course all of this follows his trips to the Super Bowl and the Vegas All Star game. He took each NBA GM to task for the deadline dud, and of course he made time to work in one of the fastest to print (but obviously not canned) tributes to DJ on the web. (I'd provide links but I think you know where to find ESPN)

“you have to admire the guy’s work ethic.”
Ah, no. He is a writer and loves the subject matter.
I admire my father’s work ethic; 50-60 hours a week for the last 40 years.

Simmons was about a month late (behind Brian Windhorst and others) on the Lebron thing.
And his latest about Oden is funny too. You don’t say, Oden is going to be the #1 pick? Didn’t I just read on TrueHoop or elsewhere on ESPN that an overwhelming number of GMs when recently polled said that (anonymously) that Oden would their #1 pick. And did Rod Thorn not tell us that going back he would have taken Hakeem over MJ? Bill is ridiculously full of himself. It started years ago with the “19 nba fans” crap. Now that the internet has fans communicating with each other he can’t use that line anymore.

I wish Bill would stop writing about college basketball. He really doesn’t know anything about it. I catch about four errors everytime he writes a page two on the subject and that which is not wrong is just warmed over conventional wisdom. Simmons is at his best when he is writting about what he knows; the NBA, video games, and B list Celebs I have never heard of. Reading a good Simmons collumn is like this peak into a strange world where 30 year old men own play station and know or care who someone named Jimmy Kimmel is. Outside of those narrow topics and the occasional “I remeber when my dad and I were…” Boston sports in the 80s history lesson, he is pretty much useless. And don’t even get me started on his baseball writing.
