Maxwell Will Apologize
Closing the loop on Kitchen-gate, it appears that Cedric will apologize on air and not face disciplinary actions. The Herald reports:
Radio commentator Cedric Maxwell will apologize for saying a female referee should “go back to the kitchen,†over the air during a Boston Celtics game Monday night on WEEI-AM, a station official said yesterday.
Sources said yesterday Maxwell won’t face any disciplinary action besides making the public apology.

“WE’VE BECOME TO POLITICALLY CORRECT” of a society
please you can’t say anything anymore without someone getting offended in this world…………..
True. I miss the good old days, when we could insult entire classes of people with impunity. Damn politically correct fools in the media, they’ve created a society where I’m not even allowed to come home and beat my wife anymore.
Barefoot and pregnant, that’s how I like my women. Anybody who doesn’t like it is just too damn PC.

Roy you forgot to mention silent as well.
I would have like at least a fine tacked on, but given that I can’t remember any major incidences of misconduct during Max’s tenure, I guess ownership are letting him off with a hand slap for prior good behavior.
Still think it was a patently stupid and disrespectful thing to say by a paid employee during a broadcast, but if he’s actually sincere about his apology, I guess it’s up to women everywhere to decide if it’s enough.

I think he had a lapse of judgement on the air, and he probably admits it was a bonehead move. Yet in the heat of the moment sometimes we might say innapropriate things, and believe me Violet Palmer sux. Probably the worst ref in the NBA regardless of sex, race, religion. The sad part is that Stern doesn’t have the balls to fire her just becuase she is a woman. If any male ref made the call this b!tch does he would be gone the next season.

Well, I guess we will just have to wait and see how Scali feels about the whole thing.
;) ;D

Maxwell should get the death penalty for his remark. So should anyone else. This way we could end the world hunger problem, as well as, the world population problem and global warming problem to boot
There also would not be enough terrorists left to worry about!

He was stupid to say it and he should have known better. I gotta admit I had a good laugh reading what he wrote.

You should miss the days when you could insult anyone and everyone. Freedom of that sort is what this nation was all about. The protection of speech was such an important notion to the founding fathers that they delineated it in the very first constitutional amendment. The notion that people are not only allowing for censorship, but embracing it, should infuriate you.
You are free to insult anyone you want. But other people are free to be offended by what you say and to respond accordingly.
I don’t think what Maxwell did was that bad. As others have noted he was just trying to be funny. So a public apology (without further action) is appropriate— but it would be wrong for him not to make an apology.
The statement was what it was, an attempt at humor due to a perceived bad call. If it is said in a bar or in row D, seat 58 at the game, it’s laughable. The thing is though when you represent an organization in corporate America, you can’t and probably shouldn’t say those types of things, even in jest; because rightly or wrongly those put a bit of a taint on the (Celtics) organization.
So I believe it when Mad Max apologizes and I believe him sincere. Tim Hardaway said he “hates all gays”. Hardaway too has since apologized and I don’t think that his is sincere. Same thing with that Seinfield T.V. show comedian and what he said to black hecklers in one of his shows. He later apologized and I don’t accept that either, I think there is something deeper in both that guy and Hardaway when it comes to gays and blacks.
It doesn’t matter to me if an apology from Mad Max alone is acceptable or if he got suspended, etc. Compared to other two, it was truly a joke gone arwy in the wrong forum. His comment was more in line like calling an obese ref a “flat slob”, or a ref with glasses “blind”, or an older ref “senile”. Max was not trying to be hateful as with the other two examples. I don’t think Max is a sexist (due to that remark), or he hates obese people, visually handicapped, or the elderly either.

Cedric SHOULD be suspended to make a point. It’s not acceptable what he said. I think the female refs have been a great addition to the NBA. Moreover, I think the players don’t talk back to them as much. It’s pathetic what he said. Period.
———————————————————-
To make what point? How do you know the players don’t talk back to Palmer as much?? Do you tour with her? Should he go to rehab? Geez.
The only person, if any, he should apologize to is Violet Palmer.
When is David Stern going to apologize for the fact that he hired a woman because she was a woman and has no business refereeing an NBA game?
And where does Celtic Organization get off not consulting Celticsblog before making a decision on Cornbread. The gall of these guys is amazing. I just know Danny had something to do with it.
Heh. I get a kick out of what he said. As I said somewhere else, the real injustice in all of this is that she’s still allowed to officiate. It’s mind-boggling to me that so many act like this is some great wrong that Maxwell should be punished for. People need to lighten up.
Sexism/racism/whateverism is only tolerated against certain groups. Watch TV commercials and notice how often men are the butt of women’s jokes. Men – in general – are made out to be utter buffoons by Madison Avenue, and yet, I can’t recall more than a voice or two raised in anger about it. Those of us not in one of certain protected groups are left to wonder what is really acceptable when we see a movie like “White Men Can’t Jump”, listen to commedians use terms such as “hillbilly” or “craker”, and hear athletes or former athletes make blatantly racist statements with no repercussions. And, yet, I don’t recall ever thinking to myself (much less publicly protesting) that anyone who’s done such should be fired.
Cornbread must’ve forgot that a woman working in a man’s sport is definitely in one of the media-protected groups. He’d have been much better off just saying that a particular white guy was too slow to ref. Had he done that, I doubt there would’ve even single post about it.

= iowa plowboy:
No, I do not ‘tour’ with her (Violet, the ref).
And no, Cedric should not go to rehab.
But for an announcer to say “get back in the kitchen” is completely unacceptable, and Cedric knows it. And Shaun knew it at the time.
Yet Cedric continued. It isn’t funny, and YES YES YES YES YES he should be suspended from the sidelines for a few games. The voice of the celtics doesn’t believe in female refs, rather, he feels they should be in the kitchen making HIM bacon and eggs. Sad.
And YES, it seems to me the players ‘respect’ the female refs a bit more, and that they are a bit more hesitant to talk back as aggresively as they would to a male ref.
I can’t believe I’m defending Violet Palmer after badmouthing her for years, but she really is better than she used to be. I didn’t see too many blown calls the other night, and I would certainly prefer her to Steve Javie.
Let me put it this way: NBA officiating is a disgrace, and she’s a little less disgraceful than some of the others.
LOL, I’m surprised that no one has commented on George Takei’s exquisite put down of Tim Hardaway. I posted the link earlier in this thread.
This is America!!!…Home of the brave, Land of the Free, …Makes me think of an ole Leadbelly tune, “Bourgois Blues”…“Those white folks in Washington, they know juss how/ throw a colored man a nickel just to see him bow/ In a Bourgeois town…/”…and this is just a heaping splatta-full of “Bourgeois Sh*t”…CornBread’s been naughty, tsst, tsst, tsst, tsst, tsst…ad nauseum!

You guys are blaming the wrong minorities for an apparent curtailment of our rights of free speech. Blame lawyers who enact new laws and amend old ones and blame the courts that interpret those laws to come up with results which nobody in their right minds intended to be the result. Im open for disbarment should I merit it.

This is a pretty disingenuous argument; can you differentiate, in a meaningful way, Maxwellâ€â"¢s freedom of speech versus the freedom of the community here to criticize him? That 1st amendment that you wax nostalgic over was, after all, a means to insure free discourse, wasnâ€â"¢t it? But probably youâ€â"¢d prefer to debate the definition of discourse or culture or freedom.

You can. He did. He won’t go to jail.
God bless America, etc. etc.
However, it was an insulting thing to say, and I’m glad he will apoligize to all of women won’t be bullied into staying in the kitchen, or doing anything that they don’t want to do by men.

The suggestively costumed “dancers”, who have nothing to do with basketball, do far more to denigrate holy womanhood than Max’s off the cuff comment. Or how about holding the all-star game in America’s version of Sodom and Gomorrah, famous for its holier-than-thou treatment of women.

I am considering a class action lawsuit against the Boston Celtic organization, initially for 48 million dollars. Anyone wishing to join me in this endeavour, please send a check for $200.00 to CF55, c/o Celtics Blog. Master Po will be required to pay $300.00.

I just heard the actual audio of the comments that were made. It was made out of a joke everyone!! this whole thing is blown wayyy out of proportion. whoever started this whole deal could not have heard it clearly or at all, because the whole thing was said as a joke to mimic tommy heinsohn. And also, they go on to say how good of a referree she has been in the past years. It is clear to me that everyone who has posted on this entire thing could not have heard the audio and just read what was posted on here. I do not think that Maxwell needs to aplogize at all, but maybe clarify what he was saying.
Not sure why people actually thought that he was going to be FIRED of all things. People are blowing this way out of proportion. Go listen to the audio before you call Cedric sexist or anything like it.
The dancers, that is, and getting paid for their bump and grind routine. If it’s eye candy you want, phone up a hooker or go to a topless bar. In addition, you might find better basketball there than the Celtics have been able to provide in the more usual venues.
by Celtsfansince55 on Feb 28, 2007 3:13 PM EST reply actions
like most of us here, none of us ACTUALLY heard the comment and relied on the alarmist media to ‘report’ the situation.
still, it is clear the vast majority of posters on this blog site are pigs.
= Celtsfansince55, sure the dancers could be considered denigrating to women, but THEY wear the outfits, make the choice to put them on, and dance for the patrons at the game for a fee. I think they are more ‘denigrating’ to the term ‘dancer’.
Mcpu40, my comment was directed not at the faux dancers but at Celtic management and the league as a whole. Cheers.

I wonder how many people impugning Maxwell for a silly comment went to the defense of their darling Lurch Kerry when he publicly trashed the people who give us the freedom to have this forum…..If I recall, Lurch’s accomplices in the media helped him frame his hideous commentary as a “botched joke”. Nothing could be further from the truth. His contempt is well documented.
Maxwell made an “insensitive” comment. He’s being held more accountable than a US Senator….who makes repeated “botched” traitorous comments.
Sad commentary.
It’s good to actually see people sticking up for Max. He’s become a very good commentator over the last few years and shouldn’t be grilled for a joke that didn’t go over as well as he thought it would. He’s a good guy and will apologize and move on.
I’m not one to stand for disparaging remarks to women but I feel the fallout to this has been brought on by the alarmist blogger nation that exists around us – and shows the power of bloggers in today’s world – that one single blogger can freak out about something silly and suddenly it’s being dissected on the biggest sports station in the country, WEEI. As a radio host myself, with a small-time sports show on 91.5 WMFO in Medford, I’m often ticked off by the “power” that bloggers think they have where they don’t have to have accountability for their actions. But get this — blogs are the fuel for the news we represent on our radio shows. It’s a changing world, clearly.
But back to Max: let’s get over this. Let’s not overreact to a joke. He WAS doing a Tommy Heinsohn impression. He WILL apologize. This should now be a non-issue.

I just heard the offending tape. Max was mimicking Heinsohn and immediately after the bacon and eggs comment he and Grande complimented the woman as the best official in her crew (which of course may not be saying much). On WEEI’s “Big Show” the general opinion is that Max should not apologize but explain what he was doing, viz. mocking Tommy.
by Celtsfansince55 on Feb 28, 2007 3:44 PM EST reply actions
I didn’t hear the audio, and don’t have to hear it to know if Cedric is making that comment, even though it was a joke, it is not the “right place” or the “right circumstances” to make it, regardless of how humorous it sounded and on it’s surface it is funny.
I think most women wouldn’t have been offended if they heard the same comment from a drunk fan, but when it comes from the Celtic announcer, it crossed the line. So at a minimum, the guy needs to apologize for doing this joke as a Celtic representitive. He should have had sense enough to know that at the time and had he apologized on the spot, no problema.
On the cheerleaders, true it is eye candy. Teams do focus groups, surveys, cost/benefit studies, etc. The cheerleaders are a net $$$ plus, that’s why you see them, plain and simple.
On a side note, I admire them more than just for the eye candy. If you’ve ever seen these high school or college cheerleading tournaments on ESPN, etc, those types of cheerleaders are atheletes. They get injured just like other sports. I don’t have a daughter but if I did I wouldn’t let her do it. Every year there are cheerleaders that are doing these flips/pyramids, etc 15 or 20 feet in the air and in some cases getting paralyzied when the stunts go bad.
