Whaa??? Pierce Trade Rumor?

Coming completely out of left field is Bill Reynolds of the ProJo with this throw-in rumor.

I’m hearing that the Celtics are trying to move Paul Pierce.

And have already been turned down by Memphis, which is trying to move Pau Gasol.

This just days after Danny Ainge called Paul Pierce the one "untouchable" on this roster. Besides, why would we even offer Pierce to the Griz who are trying to cut costs? Very, very weird. I think I'll email Bill for more details.

FYI: As of 2/4 I have not heard back from Bill Reynolds.  So no new details.

I refuse to beleive such a rumor…who’s are his sources…is he guessing?…You trade PP and we go under-age. JV baskeball baby!!

by cocofan on Feb 3, 2007 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Not to be picky, but the way the comments are written, the 2 statements are not necesarily related. In other words, by reporting that the C’s are shopping Pierce does not necessarily mean that he is reporting that Pierce was offered in the deal Memphis turned down. All that said, he may know nothing at all.

by Neurotic Guy on Feb 3, 2007 11:38 AM EST reply actions

Bill Reynolds is a joke. He writes fluff. I’ve read his artilces in the ProJo for more than 20 years. Most of the crap he puts in his articles are his opinions, not journalism. He probably muttered to himself boy, I think Pierce should be traded, then wrote it down as a valid rumor. Seriously. Time to pack it in.

The only reason the celtics would trade pierce is to get another shot at Oden/Durant. If they trade him, the team will almost certainly end up with the worst record. I can see a trade with Chicago for their top draft choice & players. Other than that, lottery teams aren’t going to trade a chance at Oden/Durant for Pierce, who would be back in the same situation he is here in Boston.

No way we trade Pierce…

by ntlmenke on Feb 3, 2007 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Pierce for Gasol straight up sounds good because it will be the last trade that Ainge makes for the Celts- then he can go pull a different franchise into the toilet. Doc can only coach what he has been given, Ainge gave it to him. The pressurte is on, it is all but guaranteed that Ainge will do something good or bad before the deadline, based on past trade history I’m not optimistic. Maybe it’s a rumor planted to get the young guys off their duff.

by CelticsFan18 on Feb 3, 2007 11:47 AM EST reply actions

Okay, so I’m not totally sure where this is coming from. Jeff – left field sounds about right.

Unless Ainge is in search of a 3-way deal I don’t like anything Memphis has to offer – especially for Paul Pierce. Paul Pierce teamed with Oden, Durant, or another top pick (along with development of the young guys, trade for a complementary veteran, and the removal of Theo and Wally) is the best way to go. Please share anything you get from Bill via email.

How does a sportswriter convey a shrug through email?

by Big_Easy on Feb 3, 2007 11:57 AM EST reply actions

NOBODY is untouchable….ever…that said,we now know Pierce is 90% of our chance at wins and to replace his production or get enough potential is near impossible….it’s not like we’ve shown with a small piece and a little time we’re better off without the guy…..now on draft nite you get the # one and a very nice player to go along with our top 5 pick???? maybe but not a unknown slot

How awesome would it be to trade PP to Memphis for their pick and then pick Durant AND Oden in the draft? LOL. Imagine a frontline of Durant, Jefferson, and Oden. I have to admit in the right deal it has possibilities..

by JHTruth on Feb 3, 2007 12:17 PM EST reply actions

Trading PP would be okay if it made sense. This makes no sense. The only thing I can think we would want from Memphis would be their unprotected first round pick and Gasol. But why would Memphis do it? It doesn’t clear payroll. Someone is probably giving Reynolds bad info or Reynolds is trying to stir something up. He has never had a positive word really to say about Danny or anybody on the team other than maybe Ryan Gomes. He has sort have been like Borges is to Belichick.

by Terry Duerod on Feb 3, 2007 12:17 PM EST reply actions

I think a 14-game losing streak is enough evidence that Pierce’s value to this team is at an all-time low. They’re fiiiine without him.

Seriously though. This is completely out of nowhere. I don’t see how there’s any substance to this. I don’t think I’m going to think about it for more than three seconds, because it’s not worth wasting my thoughts on.

by bodyofwater on Feb 3, 2007 12:22 PM EST reply actions

Oh wait. I read the article. Is it just me, or was the Pierce comment not only a blatant throwaway, but looks to be also just totally fabricated? I mean, it’s sandwiched between gems like “Can they have a Super Bowl without Paris Hilton?” and “Thereâ€â"¢s no truth to the rumor that if the Celtics were offering Wally Szczerbiak and a night with Jenna Jamison, no NBA general manager would bite.” Which rumor do you believe more, the Pierce rumor or the Szczerbiak rumor? Ugh. (Where’s the roll-of-the-eyes emoticon when I need it?)

by bodyofwater on Feb 3, 2007 12:26 PM EST reply actions

Of course, the first thing you do when trying to trade a player is to call him “untouchable.” Jerry West did the same thing with Gasol.

If I could move Pierce and Telfair to Orlando for Grant Hill (expiring), Jameer Nelson and Orlando’s unprotected first rounder, I would have to seriously consider it.

And if I were Jerry West and could move Gasol to Orlando for the same package, I would do it in a second.

by Brickowski on Feb 3, 2007 12:32 PM EST reply actions

anyone who lives in rhode island knows better than to take bill reynolds seriously. he is a failed athlete, who is openly bitter about that. he has no actual sources, nor does he actually analyze any of the sports he covers. his articles are quips and musings, with no opinion actually supported by fact.

do NOT read too much into anything he says.

If i was a GM, I think I might have to accept that Wally/Jamison deal

by cos on Feb 3, 2007 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Reynolds sounds like a very learned “reporter”

From a Bill Reynolds article previous the one above:
“And the biggest thing weâ€â"¢ve learned?
Young teams struggle. Young teams arenâ€â"¢t good defensively. Young teams often play just good enough to lose. Young teams will break your heart. And players who still should be in college are going to be inconsistent, however much potential they might have.
So here are the Celtics at basketball ground zero. But this is not meant as an assessment of Aingeâ€â"¢s four-year tenure. Ultimately, itâ€â"¢s about where this team goes from here thatâ€â"¢s important. And that should be straight to the lottery with the worst record possible.”
———————————————————————————————

Sounds to me like Doc Rivers has hired Reynolds as his speech writer.

That is some of the most idiotic drivel I’ve seen.

The Chicago Bulls of two years ago were just as young….without a superstar leader…and played defense. They have first of all, an NBA coach….and probably less sympathy in the press. Wooden may not be able to win with this team, but he would have them playing offense and defense under some kind of system.

And no, Mr Idiot Reynolds, you don’t play to lose….ever…because you breed more losing by doing it.

If this is his idea of what the Celtics are and what they should be, nobody from the organization with any knowledge, let alone Ainge, would give him the time of day.

I don’t see C’s winning under current ownership.
your team is in a free fall so you try to trade your best player……
Stern should send the last place teams to the NBDL similar to the english soccer league… maybe then Wyc & co. will get a clue on how Not to manage a ball club.
Like most of you I’m losing faith in ol’ DA & never had faith in our coach.

by tommyfan on Feb 3, 2007 1:11 PM EST reply actions

This is getting eerie!…That Paul would be traded was my posted comments after DA stated when questioned as to untouchables on the team: “You mean other than Paul…” You see that means that Paul isn’t counted with the rest of the team, not that Paul won’t be traded…Hah!…Pretty heavy linguistics…
I’m sure Paul was mentioned in the Gasol business but due to salaries it was perhaps simply a cursory inquiry…
Paul is the prime piece whether with the Celts or traded for positioning in Danny’s plan…We’ll see…

how bout paul and theo to orlando for darko, trevor ariza and grant hills huge expiring contract.

ariza is a young quality wing, darko is a young quality big man who pairs well with an al jeff type and grants contract gives us big time free agent flexibility.

Is Danny becoming the equivalent of Isiah Thomas? Say what you will about him, but he can draft. However, when he signed Scally for 5 years and traded the rookie of Dec. (Randy Foye) for Bassy and a bad back we have to start asking if Isiah has a rival for worst GM.

by KoreaCelticfan on Feb 3, 2007 1:59 PM EST reply actions

I really hope this IS true, but not for Gasol: that makes no sense, we want to LOSE this year. If PP plays, we drop out of the running for Oden and Durant. If he is traded for a lottery pick from a bad team, we have a good shot at either Oden or Durant, OR — please Red HELP us — both. I laugh when I hear that this team is one player away. We are at least two players and two years (with a real coach) away from being contenders. Let’s face it, guys — we stink even with a healthy PP. He’s a great player, but he’s no Larry Bird, he’s no Magic Johnson, and he’s no Lebron James. We don’t know for sure, but 2 players like Oden and Durant (especially that guy) haven’t come along in a LONG time.

Anyway, if we trade PP for a modified version of the packages the Bulls were shopping for Gasol I think we could be in good shape. In the trade checker Deng, Nocioni and Brown for PP worked. Add to it a way to get the Bulls/Knicks pick and you might have something.

Some of you people get so annoying, this blog has become all about bashing the ownership, the gm, the coach and the players. There is actually some hope in the future, but that hope doesn’t come from trading Pierce. I understand how bad things are but they are going to get better

For the umpteenth time someone on this blog must reiterate: Randy Foye was not in the mix! This is NOT a DA mistake. The C’s could have had Roy or Gay, but Foye would have been gone to Minny BEFORE the C’s picked if the C’s hadn’t traded the pick.

Also, the Scal signing is WAY overblown. He may be signed for a bit more than his worth, but not much. Either way, by NBA standards, the $$ is insignificant. Also, reminder if need be that no decent FA has wanted to come to Boston for the MLE or less. Won’t happen till we are contenders or we have a boatload of caproom. Neither of the examples you brought up are evidence of DA being like Isaiah.

guys PLEASE PAY ATTENTION to what people have said about Bill Reynolds. He is a horrible horrible sportswriter with no sources. I read him for 15 years growing up in rhode island and he NEVER ever ever predicted a correct rumor in any sport in any of his columns. You would think just making stuff up he would get lucky once, but to my knowledge he has not. This guys does not deserve to be linked on this page, it is bad enough that he has maintained his job all these years . I can guarantee you he has put the phrase “chauncey billups had 24 points and 12 assists last night, why cant we get players like him” in at least a half a dozen columns. I hate him and hate that he his infiltrated this board and caused speculation of fans that aren’t familiar with him. Any other fellow ri’ers please help me verify this.

by celticsclay on Feb 3, 2007 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Bill Reynolds is the biggest ‘crap’ writer of all-time. The guy is a hack and has no business having a column in a sports section of a paper. As a lifelong ‘Roe-Dialanda’, I can assure anyone who’s not familiar with Reynolds that everything he writes is pure drivel.

In fact, I got into an email ‘shouting match’ with that clown about a month ago when I caught him plagiarizing a quiz from a Celtics telecast in his For What It’s Worth column. I called him a plagiarizer and he basically stated, so what. The next week he added a comment stating where he got that quiz from.
He plagiarized a quiz the next week from a football telecast and I called him out on that and made sure his editor knew about it. He got pissed at me, basically told me to go screw but now he’s making sure he mentions where he gets his material thanks to his editor.
I can’t emphasize enough this guy needs to be fired or until then, ignored by everyone that reads the Projo.

I don’t buy this rumor at all. This is not to say that I am opposed to trading PP. At the right offer, I think it would actually be best for the team. We’re so young and I don’t think we’ll be contending for a while, at least not while Pierce is still in his prime.

Pierce Perkins for Crawford Jeffries Lee.

Szczerbiak Telfair for Hill Dooling.

Don’t discount the possibility that Pierce has seen enough, and wants out. With AI in Denver, Paul has to be thinking “That coulda been me”!

by ThickNThinFan on Feb 3, 2007 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Rumors have Ray Allen going to Chicago. If that is so and Paul were to be traded I would think Ainge would only send him out west. Chicago was the only team in the east that I could see Pierce going to. I don’t see Ainge pairing Paul with Dwight Howard.

Wow, everytime the Enquirer comes out with a rumor, fans on this board lose 50 IQ points and go in to Chicken Little mode.

Pierce is not being traded, and if he WAS being traded, it certainly would not be for Gasol. No point to it.
Danny Ainge has made it very clear:
Paul Pierce is untouchable.
Doc will not be fired.

Can we just knock those off the dicussion lists?

by tmcdon on Feb 3, 2007 10:53 PM EST reply actions

First I live in RI and Bill Reynolds is a hack. I do not put much stock in anything he writes. He ia not a sorts reporter but writes what appears to be an editorial in the sports section.
I would trade PP for the right deal. It makes sense it that with PP they play a slow down game. Tommy always is talking about running and with Paul they never will. He does not fit an uptempo game.
On Danny stating he will not fire Doc? Danny most of us who blog on this site know something about BB! How long were we calling for Rondo? How long did it take Doc to give him minutes? Doc is without a doubt the worst talent evaluator in the NBA. If he is back next season, then we will lose again next year. That is a true statement! I hope Danny sees the light, because if he doesn’t he should also be removed.

I am too. What trade are you referring to? Or is your comment based on this line made up out of thin air by Bill Reynolds?

by Don Babbitt on Feb 4, 2007 3:54 PM EST reply actions

It’s pretty obvious that Bill Reynolds column is a joke. Look at the other lines that surround what he wrote about Pierce:

It almost seems anti-climactic. Maybe itâ€â"¢s the fact that the Pats-Colts game was such an emotional roller coaster. Maybe itâ€â"¢s the fact that the thought of Rex Grossman in a Super Bowl game almost seems like football sacrilege. Whatever, Iâ€â"¢m having a little trouble getting very excited about it.

Still, itâ€â"¢s the biggest day in sports, even with Prince.

•Iâ€â"¢m hearing that the Celtics are trying to move Paul Pierce.

•And have already been turned down by Memphis, which is trying to move Pau Gasol.

•Robert Corrente can say that influence peddling at the State House is bigger than Plunder Dome, but Buddy going to jail is still the gold standard.

•Thereâ€â"¢s no truth to the rumor that Theo Epsteinâ€â"¢s new wife got a five-year contract, with the bride getting an option for the future.

•Or that Manny was in the wedding party.

This is a poor attempt at humor…I wonder who in New England is entertained by this crap?

by CelticsFan18 on Feb 5, 2007 8:06 PM EST reply actions

Some beat reporter throws out trade rumor with no credible source cited and everyone goes in to chicken little mode talking smack “I’ll quite this team!”, or “I’ll give up on the Celtics” or “Danny Ainge is an idiot for this deal.” There is no evidence whatsoever regarding what offer has been made by Boston and already accusations are flying and ridiculous declaratives are being posted. Over a bloody trade rumor. Then somehow someone posts and adds the draft pick to the fray and peeps get even more hysterical when the article never even mentions the draft pick. This message board is hysterical! Unbelievable.

If you think Danny Ainge is giving up Jefferson AND Green both for one player . . .you’re dumber than you accuse Danny of potentially being.

by tmcdon on Feb 6, 2007 9:58 AM EST reply actions

John if you think this team is losing because of AL, then u need to get your head checked. Doc has lost everywhere he’s gone, when the players are being led by a loser, of course they are gona carry that loser mentality!

by AdrianoMG6 on Feb 6, 2007 11:37 AM EST reply actions

I don’t have problem with trading GG but not Al. I listen to some of the comments and can’t believe what I’m hearing. We can pickup an Al in the draft. Righ!!!! Of the top picks none scores in the post with the exception of Oden (not Olden) and his are primarily dunks, his offensive game is no where near Al’s – now his defense and presence are off the charts). Al doesn’t have a 15 ft jump shot. I remember another PF (20 and 10) who developed a 15 ft jump shot and kept moving back to the 3pt line. He now shots 3’s, and has no inside game.

I really don’t want to get into an auction with Chicago, which is what Memphis wants to do. If we can get Gasol for GG, Theo, and other
player(s) or draft picks that’s fine. But wouldn’t it be better to have Gasol and Al to team with PP. Maybe I’m just stupid.

BTW I’m not certain that Memphis is going to trade Gasol, at least not by the trade deadline. I would rather wait to see where our pick is before sending it to another team. If Gasol hasn’t been traded by the draft that is a better time to strike. People get into a frenzy around draft time and the price of a good draft pick and become greatly inflated.

by badax33 on Feb 6, 2007 3:39 PM EST reply actions

nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heck u better look at this site Danny. The majority do not want this trade. I would rather give up the 07 draft pick unprotected than both Gerald and Al, unless we would somehow get memphis rd1 pick this year and we were almost a lock to get Greg Oden. no no no do not make this f-ing trade only offer Green,Theo,West,07 top 2 protected,a couple rd2 picks, and cash for Gasol&Cardinal that is a fair deal as long as we stick with this Memphis will view us as the best option for Gasol if Chicago goes for a different trade. The only way I trade AJ and Green away would be if the package included Gasol,Miller,Cardinal, and a pg like Atkins or Stoudemire for Wally,Theo,Green,Al,Telfair,rd1 07 pick top 5 protected.
