Pierce Sent Home
Paul Pierce is on his way back to Boston to have his left elbow examined. The Celtic captain awoke this morning with bad swelling in the elbow and a high fever.Â
Â
He will be checked by team physician Brian McKeon when he lands later this afternoon. At that time, the severity of the problem will be determined.Â
Â
“And the hits just keep on coming,’’ deadpanned Doc Rivers.Â
Â
This is, by the way, the same elbow on which Pierce had offseason surgery to alleviate bursitis that dogged him last year (he missed the last three games after playing through pain for weeks).Â
Â
Pierce had made the trip here with the Celtics [team stats] to further his comeback from a left foot stress reaction. But when he came down for the team meeting prior to shootaround this morning, it was evident he was in bad shape.Â
Â
“He said (Monday) that his elbow was bothering him,’’ said Rivers. “They looked at it but it wasn’t bad at all. But then this morning he came in and we were like, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ Eddie (Lacerte, the trainer) wanted him out of here quick.Â
Â
“We’ll see,’’ the coach added. “It’s infected and it’s pretty big. And he’s got a pretty high fever.’’

Hey, the “Brickowski” handle finally came up automatically on my computer! A shout-out to Brick from Bizarro World!
After the elbow injury thing gets resolved, in several weeks, might I suggest “flu-like symptoms” or “personal issues” that justify an “excused absence.” That should take us through March. Then, Helloooooo Mr. Oden!

This is devine intervention. Maybe the luck of the Irish has returned. Maybe it is Red’s ghost. Without Paul, this team won’t win 40 games and has a 50 50 shot at getting Oden or better yet Durrant. I hope Paul feels better soon, like April.

Those elbows can undergo a lot of stress opening up Crystal bottles. PP should rest up until mid-March, where he can begin soft-tossing with the other lefty relievers.

Boo hoo! Can someone get me a Durant…I mean a tissue? Oh, poor Paul. I hope he Odens…I mean comes back soon.

Keep Rondo, West, Jefferson & Pierce and get us one saavy veteran in the offseason with any combination of the rest of those guys to go along with Oden or Durant. Oh, if the basketball gods only smiled on the C’s like that this summer, this would all be worth it. Oh, and fire Doc. The End.

Brick,
Since Devine coached at Notre Dame, God’s alledged team, perhaps both. Like you have never had a typo.

Yes, but I must tell everyone that once this season is over and we have either of the first two picks in the draft that I’m expecting a helleva lot more out of this team next year.
NO MORE EXCUSES come next year…… I would say this would be the last straw with this team….. My anticipation of winning basketball will be far greater next season….without any excuses from Doc or Danny
But that’s for another topic down the road…for now lets continue our path
I thought Brigham Young University was God’s team of choice?

Danny goes coast to coast on the Irish in the Omni in Atlanta in 1981. He must be right.

Maybe so, either way the Celtics are covered.

Amen brother. Can we cash in on some blessings now? Oh wait…Paul’s elbow. Hmmm…blessing in disguise?

You can’t be any worse than me. I am terrible at typing and spelling. And yes, it was too good to pass up.

It’s a legitimate injury, not some tanking effort. Jim Henson died from a post-surgery infection. He needs antibiotics and it drained immediately..

Ancient Red says “no more excuses next year” – hahahaha – hey buddy that is what I said this year…..
Staphylococcus aureus? Staph aureus can be a tricky bug to get rid of. It can dodge the body’s defenses and can be resistant to certain anti-biotics.
Seems odd (and potentially very serious) that an infection would find its way back to the surgically repaired area around his elbow. Good Luck PP
Someone wants to keep Al on the Celts. Thanks!

You people who are thankful for Pierce’s infection are the ones who are truly sick. I nearly died from a bacterial infection a few years ago. These things are no joke. I hope that Pierce recovers quickly from this. I’m all for Pierce sitting out, but come on people, show some humanity. Don’t dance for joy at someone else’s health crisis.

Mike Bibby is available…. you think he’d come here?
Master Po,
Glad to see you finally got on the Durrant bandwagon. He is the most exciting freshman I have ever seen. He is a truly unique talent. When he is done, I think he will be like Kevin Garnett, only if Garnett could play on the permimeter and shoot like Ray Allen. It is not that he is a good shooter or even a great shooter for someone who is 6 foot 9. It is that Durrant is a great shooter period. Also, he demands the ball and takes over games when it counts. He is the going to be the clutch player Garnett never has been.

Durrant is why I want to see the Celtics get Gasol so badly. My dream is for the Celtics to get Gasol and land Durrant in the draft. Let Rondo play the point, have Pierce at the shooting guard, Durrant at the small forward, with Gasol at PF and Perkins rebounding and providing muscle at center, then have Allan, West and Gomes come off the bench for a tight 8 man rotation. That team could dominate the league for the next decade.

damn…just when we were starting to get back in the playoff race.

My understanding is that this type of elbow problem generally takes about (insert number of weeks remaining in the regular season)to heal.
OK, who’s next?
by JungleJim on Feb 6, 2007 5:08 PM EST reply actions
dslack, my grandfather actually died from a bacterial infection a few years ago. He passed away three days after “mild fever”. So what? We’re not teasing at the injury. We’re teasing at our fate.
Pierce will be oden… err, I mean okay. Our trustworthy medical stuff will take care of him. They send him back to the hospital in Boston instead of the hospital in Detroit. Didn’t they?

Green Mountain, infection could be very dangerous.
by Theodor on Feb 6, 2007 11:33 PM EST reply actions
We got a lot riding on Pierce’s Health in year to come. I hope we let him heal properly before rushing back on the court. Give him the month of February to heal and rest. and prepare for the final month of the season. There is no real reason not to protect our investment In him.
