We're Number 1
Memphis pulled out an overtime victory over the TWolves. We officially have the worst record in the NBA. So we got that going for us, ...which is nice.

I can’t believe it, We’re going to get Oden or Durant. Finally the Celtics have the guts to do what needs to be done to get Elite talent on this team. Every year we debate whether they should rebuild around Pierce or the kids. We’re getting the best of both worlds!! This is great, seriously..

Truth, even with the worst record in the league, its still a less than 50% chance of getting a top 2 pick. Don’t get me wrong, I want Oden/Durant, but please stay humble till the draft order is set.
And lets hope both come out.

Hey, let’s face it, this board has become the Boston Tankers. I am disappointed in the pre season kool aid drinkers (78) that said we will be in the playoffs. We have the worst organization in pro sports right now and 80 of you want to keep Doc? And 1/4 of you want to give him another chance with a better roster?
I don’t want Doc anywhere near Oden or Durant; and has been correctly thought out, even with the worse record, we have less than a 50% chance of landing either one, even if they both come out. Quit thinking like Pitino for C. sake.
Karma will bite us in the behind.
I want a young assistant coach that can teach these kids how to play defense and team ball. We are already 14 games out of first and 12 games out of the playoffs, only 33 games left in the season. We aren’t making the playoffs. Get some blood in here.
We are being called the Boston Tankers by fans around the league. As long as you want Doc to coach this team and accept 17 loses in a row, that label is deseving not just on Doc, Danny and Wyc, but on the 80% of you guys wanting to keep Doc. Shame on the Celtics and shame on the fan base.
I don’t care if we lose every single game the rest of the way. I want this organization TRYING to be a professional team and until Doc is gone, it won’t happen. Even with a competent new coach we are destined for one of the worse records in the NBA, but no more talk about Celtic Pride, if we are willing to be content with the status quo. I hate the term tanker but that’s exactly what this organization has become.

I agree … it’s only 50% and more than likely 38.7%, so let’s not count our chickens. But, absolutely, if we get Oden/Durant we’ll be competitive next year, because we will also couple that with a solid veteran presence, or two, and all the young guys will have that much more experience under their belt. And if not, hell, let’s try it again next year … there’s a few good’ens coming out next year too. This has been fun fantanking! Just kidding. Two years is enough (I was doing this last year too).
The scariest part of this season is that Durant and Oden are really in the drivers seat regarding when and where they’ll go. They’ve both made some noise about not coming out this year. The timing used to be that underclassmen had to declare before the draft order was set. Now the top players get to see where they’re likely to land before declaring. What’s more, they can pull a “Steve Francis” or a “Danny Ferry” and refuse to report.
How strong is this draft without Oden and Durant? I hope we don’t win the lottery and find out.

The worst part of it all is that we’re trying…As Blind Willie McGee said, “Feel like a broke-down engine/ Ain’t got no drivin’ wheel”…The team is so confused right now, I’m not even sure we’d be competitive even with Oden AND Durant…Ain’t got no drivin’ wheel…Ain’t got no drivin’…Dispatch Doc and his comrades after we secure the ping pong balls…

Wow we are in first place. with the fewest wins. I acn’t believe it. on The other hand win I look at the games and recasll the unforced turnovers the lousy shooting percentages and the lack of rebounding it all become crystal clear. we are a lousy team and I record reflex who we are. Its not the coaxching gang its the players wake up and look at the facts. Tonight it was the turnovers and porr shooting for sure. Nothing else. I do believe we are due to get a top two pick in the lottery. all teams that have gotten better has done so in the past. recently it was toronto orlando cleveland denver et al now its our turn.

The top players get a look every year at where they might end up and, you know what, the look is always the same. The lousy teams are picking before everyone else barring a trade for a future draft pick that gives someone like the Pistons (Hello, Darko) a shot at a high pick. The players are coming out. With millions and more in endorsements on the line, they’d be foolish to stay in school and risk injury. Joakim Noah is one case in a hundred. Take it to the bank – Oden and Durant will come out.

We’re more than 1/3 of the way from running the table: 50 straight losses and a 12-170 record.

Tanking has its downside most notably a “losing attitude”. On the bright side is the maturation of Delonte as a PG. He still has a l o n g way to go before we can consider him to be top echelon PG. He has as many faults as positive attributes but at least we’re giving him time to work on his game.
The same can be said for Jefferson and Rondo. Both have the potential to be special players if they can continue to elevate their game.
On the fringe and in limbo remains Gerald Green. We see so much athleticism, so much potential and so little basketball I. Q. We won’t know whether we have another Vince Carter or another Stromile Swift for yet another 2 or 3 years.
In the oven and ready we still have Paul Pierce and a fast developing Tony Allen who still has considerable rust to shed before we can honesty count him as a bonified asset.
All teams require a strong bench and while we come up short on this asset we do have positives in Gomes, Wally and Perkins. It does not appear that Telfair will ever reach the “adequate” level with so many holes in his game. I find it amusing that he was recently listed as one of the 5 worst defensive players in the NBA. His lack of size will work against him too. There already is speculation that we’d like to move him and look elsewhere for another PG with better credentials or a better upside
At the end of the bench and worthy of retention are Scal and Powe. I don’t know if Ray Allan will stick as he is primarily a sporatically effective offensive player.
With that core of players one wonders what additional impact a top two pick can have on our potential to go all the way. If both become superstars will they develop in time for an aging Paul Pierce? What is the upside of Delonte, Jefferson and Rondo? Is Wally finished as a player? With Ratliff’s expiring contract (and that of our alcoholic mistake) give us the funds to land a good veteran free agent? Without destroying our developing core of players, do we have trading assets (like future draft picks and non core players)?

I really think this team needs some sort of a trade. Maybe not even a Gasol level trade. Just needs to be shaken up. These guys are not that good! A couple of them have potential to be good. Not great. But good players. Those players are Al and Rondo in my opinion. The rest can go. I love Gomes but I’d give him up too.
This team if left as is. Even with the addition of Oden or Durant. It will stink next year too. Most of these young guys are not starter material. They are what they are.
They need to choose a couple of young guys to stick with. I hope its Al and Rondo. And move the rest for some starter level vets. Let a couple of the better young guys learn how to play basketball from some veterans. Because they obviously cant learn by playing with each other.
Greenfan, have you considered what Oden would do to our defense? He would most definately help out on that end, which makes up for a lot of the mistakes we make on defense.

This may not be a good thing… minny is now in the bottom ten. we need them to be out of the bottom ten so we eventually get their pick.

In case people haven’t noticed, the team we’re battling with for last place was put together by the great Jerry West (and I don’t say that facetiously). The man who kept the Lakers as a perennial power for the better part of 20 years has failed in Memphis. What is this evidence of? Has he just lost it? Did Jerry West all of a sudden forget how to build or team?
Or does it mean tat building an NBA team is 100 times harder than any of us presume? I’m not saying that Danny is the greatest GM, or that Doc is the best coach, but the bombast with which some of their critics have been posting on this blog seems unwarranted. I guess it’s just not as fun to be measured, modest, and careful in our observations as it is to rail away at management like they’re a bunch of morons whose jobs we could all easily do. And so, let the bombast continue. But please, can we at least put a moratorium on silly “here’s what my plan would be” that include idiotic solutions like “just trade all of our overrated, undeveloped young players for proven veterans who now how to win”? If you don’t like how the kids are developing, then why would another team give us a proven, quality veteran for them? Secondly, can we ban all posts that sound like, “Danny has assembled the worst team ever. All these kids paired up with a broken down Wally and a no-game doughboy named Veal is a recipe for disaster. BUT, if Doc was a better coach then this team would be in the playoffs”? Maybe Doc isn’t a great coach, but if the assembled team is as bad as we think, then we can’t know anything about the coach. Let the bombast continue. But please, let the bombast at least be consistent and just a little bit thoughtful.
greenfan raised a good point. If we land #1-#3 (would Joakim Noah really be that bad? that kid is a beast, he knows what winning is, and he could quite possibly lineup well next to big al, and is ready for the euro direction the nba style is slowly going), some young guys have to go. big al, rondo, and tony allen are the ones i least want to part with at this point.

People dont need to worry about whether or not Oden will be declaring. Its Durant that Im still not positive about.

The beauty of the NBA is that Memphis AND Boston will get better soon, as long as they don’t follow the advice on the Internet, and get desperate. Memphis took the first step, and fired their head coach. Ignore the public statements, they are all that can be said. We won’t be far behind.

Remember, Only the Pistons have won a championship without an elite #1 Pic. This draft is very important to Celtics for the next 5 years

Shat games were you watching? I haven’t seen any “maturing” of Delonte as a PG this season, unless “maturing” is now a synonym of “regressing.” This season has further exposed the many weaknesses of Delonte West. His one-handedness makes it easy for defenses to gum up the Celtic’s offensive sets, and West cannot even make a layup with his right hand.
He can not create any offense by himself when being guarded. He shot well last season because he was playing with 3 other perimeter threats at all times (PP, Raef, and Wally/Ricky, usually), but this season he is shooting an ungodly 41.2%, and every single other statistic is down from last season.
Delonte West is one of the worst starting PGs in the league, and is one of the worst 2 guards in the league when played there. I don’t know what people see in this guy. He might be a good 5th-8th man on a good team some day, but right now, for a third year player with 100 starts under his belt, he is a train wreck.
Delonte’s record as a starter this season — 2 wins and 22 losses. Interesting thing about West. When he was a starter for 7 games in his rookie year, with Antoine Walker as a forward/playmaker in the half court, the team was 6-1. Last season, the team was 5-6 when West didn’t start, and didn’t play, for that matter. They were 28-43 with West as a starter. If you subtract the 1-4 record from the end of the year tank-fest, they were 4-2 without West, not bad for a 33-49 team.
His record as starting PG of the Cs – 35-66, a .360 team, which translates to 29 wins a season. The team’s record when he isn’t a starting PG over the past three years — 54-57, almost a .500 team. Even those these numbers are affected by Pierce’s absense this season, injuries are part of the NBA, and a real, average-to-good NBA PG should be able to pilot any team to at least one win every 9 or 10 games.

I have no hope of drafting Odem or Durant because Ainge and Doc will find a way for us drafting 6-7-or 8. Just remember last season when we gave up the 6 seed to Minnesota in the last game.

Hey Fly….. we didn’t miss the opporutnity last year fo 6th position it was the Timberwolves who tanked the last game.
I watched the Minnesota game on NBA League Pass. Mark Madsden shot either 8 or 9 “3” pointers and made 1. It was totally stupid watching them throw the game aaway.
By the way Madsden “3” point stats for this year for 35 games is 0-0.
Your thoughts!!
That is true but if we lost that last game we could have drafted sixth. We had no buisenes winning that last game.
by flyfisher on Feb 10, 2007 4:09 PM EST reply actions
Fly ….. I don’t like tanking games. If I recall PP & Wally didn’t suit up for the game so we were missing two of our starters and the Heat weren’t going to play their studs since they were play-off bound.
I think that the NBA Commissioner should have nullified the loss by Minnesota as it was absolutely a joke watching this guy throw 3’s up one after another.
That was equivalent to us having Leon Powe launch 3’s.
Its past history and then we made the A__hole trade for Bassy who is like his cousin(Starbury). Totally inconsistent and doesn’t play “D” nor can he run the team as a true PG. I never liked the trade from the beginning. Had we not done the trade we could have had Randy Foye who is a pretty good looking player with the Wolves or Rudy Gay who looks like a clone of Bernard King with even more speed. Instead we are stuck with this small vrsion of Dan Dickau you would have thought we learned our lessen last year.
migit,
Give it a rest with your nonsense straw man arguments. Yes, Danny and Doc are probably better at their jobs than anyone on this board could ever hope to be. But just because the average fan does not understand how hard it is to be a successful GM or coach doesn’t mean that they don’t have a right to criticize them or demand a change with whatever amount of vitriol they can muster. It’s not just that Doc and Danny aren’t the best at what they do, it’s that they are demonstrably the worst. Your suggestion that the posters on this board should be more equivocal in their disdain for utter mediocrity is ridiculous.
