Pierce May Play - Team May Win

Game Thread | Chat Room

Two things might happen tonight for the first time in a long time.  Pierce may play and the Celtics might actually win.

njn.gifI was actually going to say that tonight is a great chance for a win even before I heard about Pierce.  In fact, if his minutes are as limited as Doc has indicated (15 minutes a game and no more than 3 minutes without a break), he might not have a whole lot of direct impact on the game.  Then again, him being in the lineup might be just enough of an emotional lift to give the team some more confidence and drive.  Regardless, the Nets are undermanned (Richard Jefferson and Kristic are both out for a long time) and struggling (3-7 in their last 10).

So glad Pierce is playing. I was really starting to worry about these infections. This is the 2nd time he was infected… the first time it was Paul and Delonte. What’s the story with this medical staff?

Anyway, good to see Paul back in the lineup. These kids need a win in the worst way. Hopefully they can get one tonight, but not too many more. ;)

Still, our bench of Telfair, Green, Scals, Powe and Kandi is so bad on both ends of the court that might is the operative word. Carter and Kidd probably will have their way with us and I guess it’ll be another 2nd half collapse, even if we stay with them for a quarter or two.

Pierce minutes will at least be fun to watch. Suppose the team knows what to do when he’s back on the floor? They’ve got to keep their motors running when he’s got the ball, a problem they’re really struggling with when Jeff gets the ball in the post. :’(

if someone said we were going to win 1 game in the next month, i would say it was going to be this game….. pierce or no pierce I am expecting a win tonight. Bet on the celtics tonight everybody

Outside of Carter we match up pretty well with them. I just hope he doesn’t pick on delonte or catch on fire from 3 point land

He’s one tough guy, especially playing now when there’s nothing at stake.

Im with you jimmyt. I thought this was the game we could win, with or without Pierce. Not so sure I would bet on it, but this is a decent opportunity for a W.

That is unless the coaching staff decides otherwise.

oh great… Lets butcher our chances of getting Durant or Oden. Whoopy. A half season of Pierce… or a shot at 15 years of a phenom? hmm… lemme think…

Pierce is going to be traded. They’re going to play him tonight and the next few so gms can see that he is ok and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is traded.

IF I am wrong the other reason to play him now is to see whom he could potrntially gel with and whom to trade.

by richardlight86 on Feb 9, 2007 2:24 PM EST reply actions

richard86,
if danny traded pierce this season he would be handing his own resignation letter over with the trade paperwork.

build around pierce, that is the stated goal. its been a rough ride this year but danny’s not about to give up his job just yet, not with the deep draft and high pick coming our way.

i would agree with your second guess though. no doubt management will be giving a close eye to chemistry over the next 2 months.

as for tonight, look for rondo to take the aging jason kidd’s lunch and eat it in front of him.

It’s a good thing if he plays.
Oden/Durant NEVER is/was a guarantee.
Pierce coming back is/was.
The C’s will get a draft pick…a good one.
Next season will be better.
Things are looking up.
The young guys need some help.

  1. on the court will help to better showcase the talent of some of the young trade bait players.
    Blah blah blah.

At some point during this game, Sebastian Telfair, Alan Ray or Gerald Green will guarding Vince Carter. During that stretch, the Nets will go on a 14-0 run while Rivers saves his timeouts for when the Celtics are down fifteen with a minute and change to go in the fourth quarter, so that they can practice going small and jacking up meaningless threes.

And that will be the ballgame.

i’m all fogetting the #1 pick in the draft but let’s put that aside…
wally has sprained his ankle 3 times in two months so let’s see what we can do by bringing him back early…wow…that really makes a lot of sense…let’s look at this logically…if he can only play 15 minutes total in 3 minute spurts…that means he is not 100% healthy…so what’s the point…i’m really boggles my mind and leaves me speechless…so let’s pay Pierce $20M per year and then risk our investment by playing him when by definition he is not healthy…i am shocked..you have to wonder what is going on inside their heads…i mean if wyc is so financially motivated why risk hurting your biggest investment…so you mean to tell me wyc, DA, Doc, Lacerte and PP are on the same page with this…and for what!!!

We need a win desperately. One thing is wanting to have Oden, and another is breaking NBA records in losses. PLus, it’s the Nets, we need to beat them.

Paul will give us the forst win since Jan 5th

If Pierce does play tonight, maybe it’ll only be for this one game if they can manage a win. Paul can just be healing away on reserve, come off the mothballs to help prevent record-breaking losing streaks, and sit back down til the next 15-18 game losing streak comes along…

If you take one of the greatest Celtics in history’s name as a handle, maybe you ought to think a little like him. Lemme think….we have a very young team with one of the most inept coaches in NBA history. You can see how depressed they are after every game as the coach ensures they play just well enough to lose. You have a team of players now expecting to lose. They have an opportunity to win and develop some confidence because their leader is way too much of a gamer to join Doc in trying to land the “prize”. Or they could hold the leader out and go into next season with a “phenom” surrounded by a culture of losing and a disgruntled leader…..lemme think…..

This whole tanking attitude makes me want to puke. I’ll be in Minny on Sunday….embarrassed that there are “fans” like you, 33, wanting your team to lose every friggin game in the hopes that a friggin ping-pong ball controls your team’s destiny.

I believe this is, as it should be, a chance to show that PP is getting healthy for a POSSIBLE trade at the deadline. Now I doubt that is why Paul is wanting to play, but as a GM, wouldn’t it be prudent to get him back in action—-JUST IN CASE someone offers “a deal you can’t refuse”, kind of thing? No, I don’t think DA is promoting a trade, but you never know what someone might suprise you with—they’re sure not gonna offer anything if he isn’t healthy!

The continued talk of lottery and draft has me thinking about us C’s fans being overly optimistic –
3-5 teams next year are possibly getting a franchise player in the draft, 2 are supposedly getting generational talents.
A bunch of other times have much better young talent than we do – Wade, James, Bosh, etc that are going to have more experience and be closer to their primes. Their teams will also have less of an identity problem than we will trying to incorporate a new star player.
It will take a lot more than a great lottery pick for us to contend and we need to cross our fingers for Pierce to stay as good as he was last year (and when he played this year) for the next couple of season.

Scratch “times” insert “teams”

by steinalive on Feb 9, 2007 6:29 PM EST reply actions

Bringing Pierce back before he is ready is just so absurd, it boggles the mind. Then you have Doc Rivers lobbying to increase his minutes. Desperation makes you do strange things.

And building the team around Pierce is not what the C’s should be doing either. Build it around Oden or Durant or Kevin Garnett. Pierce is a fine player but he’s not a franchise type.

by lemonadesky on Feb 9, 2007 6:40 PM EST reply actions

I kinda wish Paul weren’t playing like I wish I weren’t getting older each day…Inevitability!
It should be interesting…Certainly Paul’s return in no way guarantees a win…Did I spell that wrong?…Hah!

by BoundingRounder on Feb 9, 2007 7:33 PM EST reply actions

Well, It’s the second period…Looks like Paul wants Oden too!!!

by BoundingRounder on Feb 9, 2007 8:13 PM EST reply actions

End of the 3rd:

This team deserves the most ping pong balls…They sre terrible.

Doc deserves to be fired along with his entire staff…after we secure the most ping ball balls…

This team looks eerily similar to the 96 team…just awful, except now we aren’t trying to lose which makes it amazing.

I guess we can get use to having everyone having any money involved in the Celtics scurrying feverishly for some inane reason to watch a game…Who knows???

by BoundingRounder on Feb 9, 2007 9:33 PM EST reply actions

Somebody please tell me why I’m driving to Minny to see this?
