One Stat in Doc's Favor
Steve Bulpett passed along this stat:
Rivers has caught some heat from fans questioning his play-calling, but at least one league stat seems to support the Celts coach - at least on that charge. Through all the lineup upheaval, the Celts came into last week with the 26th offense in the NBA, but they were 13th in points per possession coming out of timeouts.Â
Last year, the C’s finished No. 11 on offense and were second in scoring following timeouts.

I wonder if there is a stat “points allowed after a timeout”? Dollars to donuts, the C’s are on the wrong end of that continuum.

Can someone please demonstrate that this ranking is statistically meaningless. . . and is there anyone left who does not think that the DOC is over-matched nightly.
That aside, I wouldn’t want anyone else coaching this team until the ping pong balls drop.

if there’s a stat for most points scored on the last possesion of a quarter they’d have to be dead last.
their execution on those last possesions, where they strategically “hold for the last shot” has got to be the worst i’ve seen ever. And yes, i was watching in the ML Carr days.
Anyway, that’s offense that’s directly related to coaching, and it sucks.
Every time the celtics hold for the last shot I tell my wife “I bet you the other team will do the scoring” and 90% of the time I win the bet.

since we score so much after timeouts… why in the name of god do we never call them at the end of a game with one possession to go to decide the final score??? also, we have to call timeouts before they cut the lead to a tie, or go up double digits. on a side note, did anyone hear donny marshall say the stupidest thing ever involving timeouts. i forget what game it was but he said that calling a timeout during the other teams run will only pump up the other team more. bollocks. get rid of doc, AND donny marshall!

You found a stat that ranks Doc Rivers 13th out of 30 head coaches. If there’s something he does mediocre-ly well, does that prove that he doesn’t suck overall? Not to me.

people hate on doc way too much. just take a look around the league and you can count the number of really good coaches on one hand. the majority of them, doc included, fall into that mediocre category.
just look at indiana, denver, new jersey, and atlanta for some examples of teams that have underachieved this year. if you watched every minute of every game for those teams you could pick apart virtually every coaching decision that was made by them.
i’m not saying that doc should be back next year, but seriously think about how ridiculous it sounds when you want to blame doc for the majority of losses we’ve racked up this year.

ha, look I may take a beating for this but it’s just my humble opinion, is that Doc should have the final year of his contract. Look he scarficed coaching a team of high school players, he deserves the chance to see it through. The thing I always disliked about Phil Jackson is that he always coaches teams that are already loaded. It’s easy to be a coach with a team stocked with talent. My biggest praise of Doc is the team has never quit him. Or have they turned on themselves, for a team this young, enduring this many losses, that to me say’s a lot. Hey hate me if you will, but Phil Jackson could of been here during the same tenure and I doubt you would of seen much of a difference. Give him next year or at least to the trade dead line the reevaluate. He endured alot he deserves that.
