Pierce Backs Doc

ouchyBulpett reports:

Paul Pierce was back practicing today, though he still felt some twinges with four or five cuts in his mouth and a bruised right eye. The captain offered fairly strong support for Doc Rivers’ decision to keep the subs in the game Wednesday, even though the failure to play Pierce (and put other starters back earlier) likely cost the Celtics a win over Charlotte.

“I know if we were in the middle of a playoff race, it probably wouldn’t have went down like that,'’ Pierce said. “But being that we won’t make the playoffs, being that we’re building something for next year, I think (it was the right time to make a point).'’

A point about what, Paul? That your coach, your team, your organization, and you don’t give a damn about your paying fans? We got that point about 40 games ago. Thank you

Stop being a paying fan then iowa plowboy. Feel free to jump back on the bandwagon after the draft. Pierce isn’t stupid, he’s hurting and he needs to know just what these developing kids can be counted on for next season just as much as Doc does.

It is easy for us fans that don’t pay expensive game tickets to look forward to next year. I can’t speak for the season ticket holders, but I can imagine that last night’s game was very frustrating to them. I simply switched channels to South Park, but people that pay $50 a ticket at least want a shot at winning the game.

How is it being a bandwagon fan to be pissed off about your favorite team’s captain essentially admitting that the game was thrown and giving it his seal of approval?

I’m a paying fan, and I want the Celtics to lose so that they can increase their chances to actually be really good in the near future.

So the organization seems to care about me, anyway.

Doc didn’t throw the game. The players couldn’t hold on to an 18 point lead against a terrible team. He just didn’t bail them out, knowing it would serve no real purpose in the long run. What actually helps the team is throwing the kids feet to the fire, and seeing how they respond. The didn’t, it sucks, but hopefully some lessons were learned in the process.

Bandwagon probably isn’t the right word, we’re all frustrated by this season. But let’s start putting some blame on the players on the court instead of simply targeting Doc because he’s public enemy #1.

by NYDan on Mar 22, 2007 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

i respect that paying fans do not want to see losing, but this team winning is counter productive. i know its been said before.

i love how these stories always get so much run, like pierce would push rivers under a bus. thats never been his style, everyone assumes because hes a great player, he would feel obliged to do something like that

Why get on Paul’s case. I don’t believe for one second that he agrees with what Doc did regardless of what he says now. He and Al looked upset on the bench and he left without talking to the media, so I doubt he was ok with it at the time. Doc also admitted that Paul wanted to reenter the game and got Lacerte’s ok, but Doc refused to put him back in.

It’s obvious that Paul is just toeing the company line. It serves no purpose for him not to back Doc at this point (although I wish he didn’t have to). It can only hurt the team to admit that your coach tanked. Who knows what Stern would do.

PP is being a good soldier, but he should never have been put in the situation that he has to answer such questions. This was such a blatantly stupid move by Doc that has predictably raised what should have been a meaningly March game for two bad teams to a national story (it got not 1, but 2 discussions on PTI today) that only makes the organization look bad (if it could look any worse after this disastrous season).

by flexilexi on Mar 22, 2007 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

yeah im not sure what point doc was trying to make with that either. was it “you 7th-12th men guys collectively suck” great! good job! most of those arent gonna be playing core minutes next year and some may not even be back next season. how about take these last games to get the starters and major core guys as much time together as possible to get used to each other to get them ready for next season?? noooo…that would actually be smart. doc basically threw his players under the bus for everybody to see. its an absolute disgrace and i just dont see how any player can back a coach that actively tries to put you in the worst position to succeed.

NYDan is the only one who seems to get it, you guys are blinded by your hatered. Man I posted in the last thread earlier, comparing this to parenting. It was nothing more than a “good” learning lesson, even PP can see that. As I said then and will repeat now, you keep bailing kids out they never learn, and keep repeating thier mistakes. When you let them make thier mistakes, and fall they learn from thier consquences of thier actions. What would bailing them out “again” with the starters of taught them? They were left with a large lead and they blew it, and not just for a few minutes but on and on. The didn’t want to play D, or team ball. Being a good parent is at times letting your kids take that fall. Do you not think the bench players had to do some real soul searching after that one? Do you not think thiers truth that the starters tore into them in the locker room? Some are so blind in thier hate that they refuse to listen to PP on this matter and think he’s lieing to still try and hang on to thier perspective. Come on get real, PP see’s the value in this lesson and in the team taking a good look at the bench players in closing out games. Cracks me up…oh well…

AS I read, in todays Boston Globe the starters were all mad at the bench for not holding onto the lead. Jefferson spoke to the issues of the complaining et al by the bench players about playing time and hope the game last night taught them a lesson. God move by Doc. of course the Doc haters don’t want to be confused by the Facts.

Everyone should just forget about this it is not a big deal. The really good teams that already clinch usually dont play their starters for the last couple games and nobody says anything. I heard Andy Gresh arguing on fsn about how one player is not going to change the celts and that the team is now not going to care about winning in the future. Its all garbage. There is more benefit for the celts to be losing these games than there is if they win. If i was a season ticket holder i wouldnt really be overly mad right now considering theyve lost almost all of their games this year at home. So please suck it up for however many home games there are and youll be rewarded next season. Go Mavs.

PP is a good soldier. I wonder what’s on his mind.

…the facts – our 2nd unit stinks, Scal is our starting SF, and the chances for help are either in the form of a 19yrld rookie or a blockbuster trade that could gut the team.

:)This was in today’s Boston Globe When asked about Rivers’s decisions, the starters and some of the bench players agreed. Jefferson (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Kendrick Perkins (13 points, 11 rebounds) said there was no place for players on the bench pouting about playing time. Perkins, however, also noted that with a lot of young, competitive players, it was almost inevitable for some to become frustrated by a lack of playing time.

“You see some people’s body language and they’re mad about playing time,” said Perkins. "It was a teaching thing. OK, here’s your playing time with an 18-point lead. What are you going to do with it? At this time of the season, I think it’s good to give playing time to certain guys to see if they can play or not.

“I’m surprised, but I’m not surprised [the bench couldn’t close out the game]. When you’re pouting and you’re mad about getting playing time, it affects your playing. If you’re mad when you check into the game, then it’s going to affect your playing. You’re going to try to do stuff out of your comfort zone that you’re not capable of doing.”

Gerald Green, who has bounced from the bench to the starting lineup and back to the bench recently, said the reserves had learned their lesson.

“We learned that when you get put in the game, you’ve got to be ready to play at all times,” he said. “We’ve got to always hold the lead. Just maintain the lead. That’s what we didn’t do today. They outplayed us, and that can’t happen.”

Given the way the fourth quarter transpired, it is uncertain whether the reserves will have another chance this season to show what they have learned.

…continuation..

personally, I think we should be good next season regardless. I love the RR,DWest,PP,AJ,KK line up…bring TA to the mix(to take GGs mins) and it should be all be good. We need to get a reliable big to sub AJ and KK.

it’s not that much different than the game against NJ a few years ago (west/jeffeson/allen’s rookie year) when doc kept the young guys out on the floor for the end of the game, despite the fact that doing so meant we would most likely lose the game. was doc tanking then?

i guess when you’re winnning the idea of “tanking a game” is a little easier to swallow.

by dr_awesome on Mar 22, 2007 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Get the feeling Doc has soured on Green and vice versa? That can’t be good for either one.

PP is a class act. He could easily (and rightfully) ask to sit out and no one would question it at this point in the season.

I like this team coming back next year. Minus Doc. I think he’s gone as far as he can go with this group.

Hey Freease1, thanks for the back up…I loved Perkins comments, that kid seems to always prove he has wisdom beyond his age. And no college, must be a old soul…Keep the Faith, Restore the Pride.

Players don’t get playing time for a reason, they don’t earn it. But it shows something when those players complain. Perk went thru this, worked hard and earned his playing time as did Al, Gomes and Delonte. Banks went thru it and concentrated on pouting. Now he’s pouting on another team’s bench. Scals doesn’t get much time, but he doesn’t pout. Some of the lack of playing time is because the players don’t mesh or some do better starting and some do better coming in off the bench. All this needs to be worked out. GG plays better when he starts and is in with the better players. He was lost in the last game because he just didn’t fit with the other players on the floor. I think GG will get it. Danny said in pre-season that he liked his players individually, but didn’t like the mix. The roster needs tweaking and this is a process. I think Doc and Danny know our needs, but doing what Doc did last game will show which players respond when put in a similar situation. In this regard, Powe seems to be a keeper. I think GG will learn. I think Telfair will not. I think Allen Ray is on the bubble, but I don’t think he’ll be here in a year or two. I also think the roster should be limited to 13 or 14 players, possibly 12. The only reason to keep more is in case of injuries or expiring contract situations. I’d rather see us keep 12 and bring in players for 10 day contracts if needed. I’d also love to see Perk name names, but I know he won’t. Rambling over and out.

one point no one has mentioned. tommy h was flabbergasted by doc’s move and was at a loss for words. i believe that is metaphoric for all us fans. as we try to find our voice we run the gamut of emotions. like kermit says, ’ it ain’t easy being green.’
