Jurassic Pick
Scott from RaptorBlog is too busy talking about some supposed Knicks/Raptors rivalry to worry about the Celtics. For those wondering how there is a rivalry between those two teams, here's his explanation:
When your NBA franchise is only 12 years old and you've only made the playoffs three times in franchise history, it's not likely that you're going to have any significant rivalries with another team. But there was a time when the Toronto Raptors were a decent team, when they posted three straight winning seasons from 2000 to 2002 and made the playoffs all three seasons. And in two of those seasons, the Raptors faced the hated New York Knicks in the first round.
But I digress. Actually, no I don't. I can't think of any story lines for this game. I don't have any undue distaste for the Raptors (other than the fact that they named the team after a movie monster and Zeke used to run the team). In fact, I have a good deal of respect for the way Colangelo has put that team together and created a contending team. I suppose I could draw a parallel between Doc and Sam Mitchell who entered the season in lame-duck status but has actually fared pretty well. However, there's no telling what the future holds for Doc, so I'm just going to leave it at that.
Instead, I'll just pose this hypothetical question.
If you could chose, would you rather have the top pick from last year's draft or the 3rd pick from this year's draft? Discuss.
Justin Poulin is covering the game again tonight and has the Pregame Interview with Doc Rivers, but it sounds more like the Georgetown postgame show.

It’s a more difficult question than it appears. The disadvantage we have is that we’ve seen how Bargnani has fared against NBA competition but we don’t yet know how the 2007 crop will adjust to the NBA game.
Bargnani has size and can hit the three etc. His value is primarily from the outside. One could argue that an INSIDE player with comparable but different skills could be MORE valuable than an OUTSIDE player.
Our problem is the difficulty in projecting which of today’s draft choices 3-15 will be that “special” player. The choice could be much simpler if this challenge question were asked in April of 2008, having had the benefit of HINDSIGHT!

I’ll be interested to see how far the Raptors have progressed, and how they look without Bargnani.
Assuming there is no regime change in Boston, I’m planning to go to some Raptors games next year. Toronto is only 50 minutes away by air. I’ll take my wife and we’ll go for the weekend. She can shop at the Eaton Centre, we’ll sample the Indian restaurants (best in North America) and stay at the Royal York. And I’ll get to see some good basketball instead of disorganized crap.
Bargnani (sp?) for sure. He would be the third pick in this draft if Durant and Oden came out according to pundits. He would give us the perfect complement to Jefferson and Pierce: a big man who is a face the basket type offensive player who can take bigs off the dribble and shoot over smaller guys. It would allow Jefferson in particular room to play with impunity.
Bargnani is overrated, I’d go with Brandan Wright or Horford over Andrea.

While we take “pop” shots at Danny and Doc let’s not forget that our glass is only HALF full (with talent) because of major mistakes in drafting and/or trading draft choices for “quick-fix” solutions. Add the Vin Baker trade too which took us out of free agency. All occurred BEFORE the Danny/Doc regime. The Raptors were better managers of their resourses and better talent evaluators than Petino/O’Brien. They SHOULD have the look of a vastly improved team. While we squandered our resourses they preserved theirs.
I still don’t believe that last year’s 7th draft pick would have been a Difference-maker. Telfair appears to have been a complete miss but Rafe’s contract clearance and Ratliff’s expiring contract may help us in a trade this summer. Let’s not forget that Vin Baker’s “buy-out” is off the books this year too. A major turning point in the future of this organization is now at hand!
Perhaps we could mention Len Bias as the start, Reggie Lewis as the continuation and the finale with the Petino/O’Brien era. So who inherits the fallout? Danny and Doc but in all fairness, they pretty much inherited a pantry half full!@

moskqq, we really need a moratorium on blaming the deaths of Len Bias and Reggie Lewis, or Rick Pitino, for the 2006-07 Celtics. That’s ancient history.
The team stinks because the coach stinks. They’re disorganized. We have a bunch of recruits who can’t even march in step, never mind shoot a gun. I guess they’re too young or not talented enough to go left-right-left.
you hate a player you brke his neck and fought back? why exactly

I want everybody to give a candidate to replace Rivers. Everybody bitches and moans but no one names a replacement. Who will come here and coach.

Oh I didn’t know Pape Sow did that to Gerald that’s disgraceful. I hate him now too.

I’d take Noah with the #3 pick. He’s better and more versatile than Hibbard, Horford, etc. Also, he’s a winner who hustles and plays like he loves the game.
I’m afraid the Celtics are going to wind up with the #3 pick if the lottery goes according to team records. The Bucks have given several of their top players the rest of the season off and are getting hammered regularly. They are only 4 games up on the C’s and play Boston twice more.

There’s a lot of talent in this draft, even after the top-2, but given that we already have an emerging post scorer in Al, and Pierce is still here, I might actually take Bargnani over The Wrights, Noah, Horford, and whoever else Ainge would be considering at #3.
The defense with Al and Bargnani would be an adventure, but he’s a hell of a shooter, can put it on the floor and finish, and has legit PF length. They’d be a nice young combo, but also produce immediately.
As for the Rivers replacement, Iavaroni is an obvious option, but as Brick says, I expect him to end up in Toronto with his old buddy Bryan from Phoenix.
I’d also be happy going the other way, and bringing in a defensive guy who will build a coherent system around the players at hand, like Carlisle, who seems likely to be out of a coaching job in Indy (His deal stipulated that he can move upstairs once he stops coaching, for whatever reason, but I think there’s a decent chance he’d rather stay on the bench, with his other ‘86er buddy Ainge.) I know a many people find his style boring, but if Ainge is committed to building around Al and Pierce (and hopefully Oden?) then a half-court system probably makes the most sense anyway, and I’m confident that Carlisle would get this group to win; winning doesn’t bore me…
If the Celts replace their coach, it should not be difficult to find applicants, including Iavoronni. Particularly if they get a top2 pick, the Celtics will be loaded with big men, and developing wing players on a team with great fans, tradition and no where to go but up.
Regarding the 3rd vs last years top pick, Bagniani and LeMarcus Aldridge at #2 may be better than anything after top2, but only time makes that decision. Wright, Noah, Horford may be great players in 3 years. Hibbert and green may become all stars.
expiring contracts won’t be in any trades! they will help the Celtics resign their young players to new contracts…
