Durrant's Teammate's comments
Sorry, I read this post wrong. I thought it was Durant speaking. It is actually his teammate making an off-hand comment. This is pretty much a non-story.Â
Texas freshman point guard D.J. Augustin said Monday that he's definitely returning for his sophomore season.
"I need to get better. I need to work on my game," Augustin said. "I need to work on my defense and get stronger and quicker."
Augustin is averaging 15 points and a Big 12-leading 6.8 assists per game.
Augustin also said that star freshman Kevin Durant has told his teammates that he's coming back.
"But Kevin's a humble guy, so he's probably going to say he's coming back whenever he's asked that question," Augustin said.

I don’t really mean to nitpick a college freshman, but is that really being “humble” or is that playing to your fans?

I heard two days ago from someone who is “supposedly” connected to someone close to Durant (you know what a great source that is) is that he has pretty much decided he is staying. His parents are financially stable and they are fully supportive of his staying another year. Rick Barnes his coach interviewed on the Jim Rome show a couple of days ago also hinted he might stay (I am sure that is wishful thinking on his part or maybe he knows)
Who knows
At some point a player like Durant will decide to stay another year, and then blow out his knee about halfway through the following season. The palyer and his advisors can share in the Darwin award.
I just hope that when it happens, the injury won’t prevent him from working in the carwash or McDonalds.

Great thing about insurance is he’ll still have the money.

"daniel (san antonio): When will you make your decision on whether or not you’ll come back next year?
SportsNation Kevin Durant: I’ll make my decision at the end of the year when we finish all our games. I’ll sit down with my coaches and family and make my decision. I know it will be a hard decision. "
From yesterday’s ESPN chat WITH DURANT.

It’s not like he announced anything. It should read. Augustin: I’ll stay another year…………..and Durant told me he will too.
It’s bad news either way but its not concrete. I always thought 1 of them would stay but I thought it was gonna be Oden, mostly because of his hand.

Insurance covers the medical bills, but not the lost multimillion dollar NBA contract, the sneaker contract, the endorsements…. He can kiss all of those goodbye. No one gives a hoot about 20 year-old ex-jocks who walk with a limp.
And even if the player comes back from the injury he can probably forget about the big money. I give you as Exhibit A Curtis Sumpter of Villanova, who was probably one of the 2-3 best freshman in the country until he got hurt. If he had come out in 2004 after his freshman year he was a lock for the first round.
Sumpter only has himself to blame if he didn’t insure himself… great college athletes who understand how much they are worth take out insurance policies on their knees, back, etc. Of course I feel bad for the guy, but still… it’s common practice now.

If Durant or Oden return to school it’s quite simply a colossal error in financial judgement because insurance is a hundreth of what they could make with endorsements and contracts. It’s also a colossal error in basketball judgement because at their talent level they’ve learned all they’re ever going to learn from the college game. Furthermore it’s academically non-sensical as they are not getting a degree in this one additional year and the knowledge gained in a few more semesters of watered-down jock curriculum is pretty minimal.
If they do choose to return it would be in the face of overwhelming logic and a display of poor judgement on their part.
I can guarantee that Oden will NOT be going back to Ohio State next season. This is coming from someone very close to Oden himself.
If either of the two stay, it will be Durant. Dont read too much into what he says, as a lot can change between now while hes having some fun playing with his college teammates, and a few weeks from now when hes staring at potentially a boatload of money.
