“The players weren’t thinking about the lottery and all that,†said Ryan Gomes, “but reality is reality. Now that our position in the lottery is set, hopefully we can go out and win some games.
“Things could change now, but another thing you’ve got to think of is that he (Rivers) was doing that for a reason. It could be for that reason (lottery position) or it could be for getting the younger guys some playing time or seeing who’s going to be here next year. There’s a lot of things that go into that.â€Â
How long before he gets a text message from Wyc reading "Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!"?Â

I always considered Gomes to be quite articulate and obviously court-savvy (high b-ball IQ and all that…) but this is really raising some fundamental questions about his wisdom and basic understanding of strategy and tactics….WOW! Ryan, please, please….

I think all he’s saying is that there are other factors than tanking that went in Doc’s end-game lineups, and we shouldn’t necessarily expect he or Delonte or Rondo to be in at the end of games even after securing the 2nd worst record. In fact, if the lineups and game strategy does suddenly change, that would be the more egregious evidence of tanking yet.

He may be worried about extension talks this summer, and inevitably losing playing time to whoever is drafted/traded for. It definitely seems odd that he continues to speak out about this despite the obvious trouble it may cause.
Do our younger players feel they’re better/worth more than they are? I guess we’ll find out when a bulk of them need new contracts. Most of them are not going to be starters in this league and they should keep quiet.

Wow a young player who doesn’t want to tank. Shocking.

letting doc and the players talk to the press about tanking, th elottery etc has been a disaster. danny should havetaken control of this a long time ago. Not just gomes but Pierce, doc and everyone. the real problem in Boston is the press but the Celtics have been completely undisciplined about their responses . If I were Danny I would have laid down the rule that no one says anything that could be interpreted as suggesting that they weren’t trying to win games. secondly I would have instated a policy that any discussion about status of player’s health, injuries etc had to come from the trainer or team doctor and I don’t mean Doc. Doc thinks he is way smarter and more charming than he really is. He’s starting to believe his own BS. I’ve gone back and forth on whether to extend him or not. I did see some improvement in team defense but like Sports GUy I wonder and worry what Doc will do with a healthy team. Can he win a close game? what about x’s and o’s? I’m abouyt 50-50 on extending him. he’s a charmer but Idon’t know if there’s uch more to him as a coach than that

One thing for sure is that this would NEVER happen for a Belichick coached team! ;)

If I owned an NBA team I would want Gomes on it in some capacitry.
Steady, Talented, Seemingly honest, hard-working, skillfull and articulate.
Hard to come by. Please keep Gomes.

Basically he said that tanking for the pick isn’t the only reason that Doc is playing the scrubs…sounds like he is being smart to me.

This comment seems to be better thought out than the first one I read. I really have no problem with it.
As has been pointed out, he is simply saying that what Doc did by keeping him on the bench was not necessarily done with the thought of losing. He could have had other reasons.
Seriously, I doubt very much that Doc was trying to lose that game, in front of all those Celtic legends of the past. I think they all wanted to win that game and to wanted to win it badly. They just don’t know how to win close games at this point without their leader.
I do get the impression that Gomes is not the good soldier that the fans like to think he is, however. He clearly is perturbed at not playing in the fourth quarter, and, I’d like to remind you all, he was one of the players that DID play ion the fourth quarter against the Bobcats. You know, the game where Doc said he was trying to teach some of the youngsters a lesson about whining about playing time. Apparently Ryan didn’t learn his lesson.

I’d be concerned if Gomes was a “good soldier” in this context. I would hope every player wants to compete. What happens if Stern does decide to sanction for the overt cheating? How are the players held accountable?
Jaycelt, if they wanted to win, they might start by calling a timeout on the last possession?? They might start by not having their two most experienced players on the bench? In theory, they should be getting leadership from their coach. Even when Doc is trying to win he shows no leadership.
I’m with the Great One, Master Po’s post on this.

There’s a old saying you see what you want to see! In this case you read what you want to read. The ones who support this whole tank conspiracy only read what supports that, and those who support the other way read what they see. Look every team plays players and combo’s that they might not have played once a chance for playoffs has passed. If your not at the very bottom, no one seems to care or voice these conspiracy theroies. We did it last year, where was the out cry? I know I won’t change anyones minds in either case, but you no try having somewhat of a open mind when looking at these things and not be so analytical in trying to support your theories. Try some Tact, you all know what tact is don’t you?
Tact: The ability to tell a man he’s open-minded when he has a hole in his head. ;D

Timeouts in that situation are not a given. There are many coaches who would rather not let the defense set up. As it was Doc said he was going to call a timeout when Ray passed it to Powe the 1st time, but Ray got the ball back. By the time he passed it the second time it was really too late. You may argue with the decision, although that’s hindsight, but you can’t argue with the logic. Unless your’e calling Doc a liar?
As for leaving your two most experienced players on the bench, Doc went with the players who brought the team back from an 11 point deficit. The two players that stayed on the bench just happened to have the worst /- for the game. Hard to argue with that logic either.

Well, it’s not like Doc’s been too honest lately…as in being competitive. He’s not called timeouts continually in that situation and they’ve always lost. Hard to argue with that logic, Jay.

RYAN GOMES IS AN IDIOT!!! And yes, you can demonstrate this trait by merely being honest. Why don’t you just call the next referee that you don’t like an ass… you know why, BECAUSE THE SYSTEM DICTATES YOU DON’T…. YOU TOOL!. Please Shut Up.
