Icky

I enjoyed the rant by Jesse Nunes on Boston.com about tanking.  The general feeling that he had (and that I share) is that it is great that we got the 2nd worst record, but we can't help but feel a little icky about how it all happened.  Of course, all will be forgiven and forgotten if we land a top 2 pick.  But if we don't...

i dont feel icky at all. We legitametely lost 18 games in a row- we deserve the second most balls. Every team would have done the same thing in our position.

I agree, what’s to feel icky about? We were legitimately bad this year and we were also not the only team down the stretch to sit key players with questionable injuries. At least we weren’t greedy, we’re only the second worst record in the league.

I am afraid that we in fact wont land a top 2 pick because of how it happened. If Karma doesnt get us, David Stern will.

and what on earth is Ryan Gomes hoping to achieve through his recent comments to the press? Does a top 2 pick threaten his future with the Celtics? hmm…..

I can believe it is only April and here I am once again obsessing about the draft

We can’t control a small plastic ping pong ball. Only fate can. And we mustn’t count on fate.

This loss to the Bucks and the one against Charlotte a few weeks back were depressing. I’m all for the ping pong balls but if we couldn’t beat the Bucks 2nd team at home it’s depressing. However it has given us a chance to see that Alan Ray and Telfair aren’t in the future plans. Sad to see Perk’s bumbling act return.

Rivers got his doctorate in tankology in Orlando. He’s in Boston doing advanced post-doctoral research. In fact he can’t even talk about some of the secret work he and Beetlejuice are doing for the no-defense department.

As others have said, how’d that karma thing work out for the Spurs?

I’ve been sitting here for an hour trying to come up with an article that accurately reflects where we’ll be if we don’t get a top 2 pick, but I can’t wrap my mind around it. Best case is that Danny pulls off a deal for an all star (I guess) and the worst case could be anything from Pierce demanding a trade to who knows what. All I know is that I’ll be very, very, very bitter for a good long time.

Will Ainge be my scapegoat if we don’t get the pick? Maybe. Is that fair? Probably not, but he is the one that got us to this point. Fair or not, it is on him and Doc.

Before someone wants to play the injuries card, let me point out that the team was 20-27 with Pierce playing. Projected out over 82 games, that is 35 wins. 2 more than last year.

Like I said, …bitter.

I’ve been feeling icky ever since 1997. This just made me flat-out naseous. I learned my lesson from a decade ago.
I’ll accept whatever the basketball karma gives us.

Me no feel icky. I was sad last year that we didn’t win the lottery. I hate that the Timberwolves can’t stay out of the bottom ten. I don’t like it when the C’s lose. I hate Antoine. I love Rondo … what was the question again?
C’mon. Will I be bitter and renounce the C’s? No. No I won’t. I’m a Celtics fan, and have been since the day I first watched Bird play. I’m hooked, and I hope for the best to come out of every single situation we’re in, whether it’s an eighteen game losing streak, a coaching change, or Pierce’s sore elbow, wheter it’s a first round pick, a second round pick, or an undrafted free agent.
I say Ainge is a Celtic. I’ll stick by him to the end. If he wants Doc to coach, then so be it. If he wants to draft an incredibly fast pg ou of UNLV, so be it. If he wants to draft a power forward out of Prentiss, MS that has only played against small town ‘Bubbas,’ then so be it. If he’s proud to have DWest and TA, then so am I. If he’s pleased to land GG and asks me to be patient, then I’ll try. If he drafts a pg out of Kentucky who can’t shoot, then I’ll trust he has other gifts to offer.
I’m a company man. If you wear the same green as Cousy, Russell, Cowens, Havlichek, and Bird, then I’ll root for you as long and loud as I can every time I can, period. And no I’m not ashamed like Bill Simmons (who rooted for tanking as little as a month ago) or icky like Jeff either.
It’s been the worst year in a while — in some ways the worst ever for Celtics fans. Bring it on. I’m ready for next year, and I’ll shout it out for anyone in green in 07-08. The day I’ll be ashamed is the day we quit trying to be the best. Does Danny want to raise number seventeen? All right then. I’m for it, Danny. Make the best of it. Whether good, bad, or repulsive: let’s use it to move closer to number seventeen.

Again, this stuff has been going on for years. While I dont like the whole idea of tanking, its become expected…and in some cases, accepted.

Not sure what the whole “surprise” is.

Early on, I wanted us to lose so Rivers would be canned. Later, I wanted us to win so Ainge and Rivers would be canned. Best case scenario, imo, we don’t get a top 2 pick and we say goodbye to a couple of bums. Too bad we getting rid of Wyckie Baby couldn’t be so easy.

There won’t be just 2 players in this years draft. It is Danny’s job to find the Bosh and Wade of this years draft.(if we do not get the first 2 picks)

My only regret is that we don’t have the worst record. This franchise needs all the luck it can get, and luck is all about the odds. So, if we really, really tried how many more wins could we have eked out? Let’s be real generous and say ten. 33 wins gives us the same record as Charlotte, and a late lottery pick. How many more of those do we need? This club had no shot at the playoffs. I’m all for karma, but with the kind of karma we’ve had for twenty years, a little extra help with more ping pong balls couldn’t hurt.

by halfman/halfoyster on Apr 15, 2007 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

Regardless of whether we get the 1 or 2 pick, ainge is still going to pull off a huge trade this off season. I think we’ve seen the worst of it.

People need to get over themselves and stop whining. The system is what it is and there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of it. I would rather be the Celtics right now with at least a decent shot at Oden or Durrant than a team like the Clippers or the Nets, doing nothing but getting older and having no shot at those two players. I think there is a lot of reason to be positive about next year. With Pierce injured the team wasn’t going to go to the playoffs anyway. Thank God they at least lost enough to get a decent shot at Oden or Durrant.

Corey Brewer could be the best player from this draft (just like Wade is the best player from his draft when healthy). I honestly believe that.

I’ll only feel icky if Doc continues to coach this team next year. They’ll hopefully be healthier & have at least a solid contributor from this year’s draft.

But losing more games from one year to the next has to have consequences. Fire Doc & hire Carlisle.

Rick may not be the most loveable coach, but he teaches his teams to execute & he’s able to finish games. I wouldn’t sign him to a 10 year contract, but he’ll have this team in the playoffs next year & contending within 2.

I have no faith that Doc can do that.

Jeff, don’t forget that the C’s were on a 5 game winning streak before Pierce went down. Tony Allen was beginning to produce alongside Pierce and Jefferson began to play well too. This team certainly wasn’t going to be a contender, but injuries aside, I’d argue they could have taken the atlantic this year.

I don’t feel icky. The Celtics played themselves out of being the worst team in the league. If they played Pierce and others all out we might have been able to lift ourselves to the lofty position of fourth worst team. In doing this we would have given Green and Rondo much less playing time. I think it has benefited both of them immensely. Ryan Gomes also got a significant opportunity to work on his three point shot. I like Gerald, but he is still at least two years away from becoming what we hope.

Relative to the questionable Charlotte loss I thought Danny gave a far better explanation than Doc did. Other than that the Celitcs did no worse than any of the other teams that we played. I was at the Bucks game that Nunes writes about. While I did think other lineup options were possible the five that were out there at the end had closed leads in other games. They actually did better than I expected. The last few minutes of that game served several useful purposes it confirmed what an around the basket hustle beast Leon Powe can be. I really want to keep him around if possible. They also worked plays for two good shorts for Gerald, which he missed. Hopefully, the next time he will realize that he has to relax just a bit more. As for Allan Ray he had a good shot at the basket and passed it up. That was probably a far better shot than they would have got running a play. (Incidentally last night against Orlando the players called a time-out when Doc, correctly, did not want one called.) Players can learn a great deal about what to do in tight situations in the future by playing through them now.)

Unfortunately the preseason games for the Celtics next regular season have already started. I don’t think anybody should feel icky. If there were not an Oden or Durant out there we wouldn’t feel guilty at all about what the Celtics have been doing lately — getting ready for next year. Think about it, the Celitcs played themselves out of the role as the worst team to the second worst. They did not play themselves from the fourth worst team to the second worst. If that had happened maybe you could feel a little icky. (I write this as someon who has argued with my son, also a poster, that some wins were necessary for the team. His preference was that we go out and challenge Memphis.)

One comment about Nunes feeling okay to root for close losses. I actully thougt that during the eighteen game losing streak that many of those games were only close because our opponents realized how truly bad the Celtics were and how little effort they had to put forth to win. The recent close losses have been for more meaningful because the Celtics did have chances to win.
