Telfair Arrested
YONKERS - Boston Celtics star Sebastian Telfair was arrested early today after police said a loaded hand gun was found in his car when he was stopped for speeding on the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers.
Telfair, 21, who gave police addresses in White Plains and his native Brooklyn, was stopped shortly before 4 a.m. on the northbound Bronx River Parkway, when police said his 2006 Landrover was clocked going 77 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone.
Police said Telfair, who was driving, produced a Florida driver's license that had been suspended. Westchester County Police Officer Adrian Camacho subsequently found a loaded .45-caliber handgun under the front passenger seat, Westchester County police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.

Exactly right. No one will touch him in a multiple player trade… We owe him 2.5 mil next year and have a qualifying offer for 3.5 the following. Am I understanding it right that we can choose not to do this and he will become an unrestricted free agent after next? If so then we should see if someone will give us a late 2nd round pick for him or cut him loose.
Hopefully there is something in his contract that allows us to not pay him next year for conduct unbecoming…
I hope they lock him up and throw away the key, booo yaaa

I had a feeling we were going to get rid of Sebastian soon anyway. This is just adding to the multitude of reasons why we will.
Silver lining: Now we get to see Bassy on the AND1 Mixtape Tour! He should prosper in ‘that’ kind of basketball.

I was very critical of Telfair when he got his chain stolen, especially when he called a “homey” instead of the police to report it. Some said I didn’t know all the facts, I was jumping the gun (no pun intended- oh what the heck pun intended), etc. The fact that he didn’t contact authorities spoke volumes. I am not surprised of this new incident. The guy just doesn’t get it, probably never will, i.e.- see Mike Tyson.
I’m trying to look to the future and not dwell on the #7/Telfair draft package, but felt it the second I heard it, god-awful move Danny.
IMO I would just cut Telfair if you couldn’t get a late second rounder for the guy which I don’t think you can.

You know the PR management with spin this into a positive somehow. They will say the gun didn’t belong to him….What an idiot.

“New York is a "may issue” state, meaning that local law enforcement
has discretion in determining whether or not to issue a concealed
weapons permit to an applicant. A license to carry a concealed handgun
may be granted by the appropriate licensing authority on the same
basis as a license to possess a handgun (see New York Background
Checks section), except that those seeking to have and carry a handgun
without regard to employment or place of possession must show “proper
cause.” N.Y. Penal Law § 400.00(2)(f).
Assuming Telfailure HAS a gun permit -
A person who carries a handgun or short-barreled shotgun or rifle
without a permit commits a class A misdemeanor. Section 265.01(1).
Additional application and background check requirements, as well as
permit suspension or disqualification information, are detailed under

Dissappointed, but I agree with Jeff’s take on the matter. Further if not in jail and you can’t unload him, heck keep him on the roster and play him if needed. Why piss 2.5 mill away.

Funniest basketball story of the year for me from N.Y.
I was in NY late March and my friend got tickets for my wife and me for the Knick/Maverick game. We were 9 rows back between the basket and the Dallas bench. Mark Cuban attended the game. About 5 guys in their late 20s, early 30s sitting right behind us were ribbing Cuban throughout the game.
Anytime Cuban felt Mavs got a “bad call” he stayed silent but shot up out of his seat right behind the Mav bench and these fans would constantly banter him.
Mavs came out of the half and went from 3 up to about 15 up right at the start of the 3rd Q and it stayed like that the rest of the game. All during the game, Cuban (we know he hears these guys) never glances over at our direction at all.
Finally with about 90 sec. left, Mavs up by 17, this one fan right behind me yells out, “Hey Cuban, we’ll see you again in the finals”. Cuban lost it for about 3 or 4 seconds. It caught Cuban off guard and it looked like he almost busted a gut laughing. He still didn’t look our way, but composed himself and acted like he never heard what was said.

Yup, we got rid of three cancers in the C’s Locker room, got Wally who, when healthy, is one of the best shooters in the league and somehow Danny should have gotten more for them cause it’s a “bad trade” for us.
Too bad about Telfair, but I don’t believe it’s over with him. Hopefully this humbles him and he returns to the Celtics and lives up to his potential. Kids do stupid things and Telfair is STILL a kid.
Wow, 77 mph on the Bronx River Parkway! Usually you are lucky if you can go 5 mph.
No big deal legally. He’ll pay a big fine and take away the gun. He’ll have trouble buying another, although was we learned from the VA Tech tragedy, most states are very lax about enforcing gun laws. He can probably buy another one in any Republican state.
As Porky said, if this is the excuse they need to get rid of him, fine. No great loss.
Brick, you ought to keep your opinions to basketball..Pretty tasteless comment.. But I’m sure Telfair could buy a gun in a Democrat state, too….if he wants to pay 760% in taxes and penalties and surcharges and mamcharges and whatever imaginary charges and taxes they can dream up. If your state can derive some kind of tax revenue, they’ll allow the sale of anything. That, somehow, is far morally superior.
C’s management, by putting forth this pathetic tanking job has shown more contempt for their fans, the game, and their own code of conduct than Telfair ever has. His behavior is no more contemptible than intentionally losing games for a draft pick. Although I agree with Porky and Brick….he needs to be gone. Hopefully Doc is following him out the door.

What was tasteless about my comment? Since when is the truth tasteless? If outrageous taxes and surcharges keep people from buying guns, especially concealable semiautomatic hand guns, then I’m all for it. In fact, the surcharges are probably too low.
You might feel the same way if your father had been a cop, like mine. He was only shot once and survived. Some of his friends didn’t.
Start with the fact that your premise is false. And it is tasteless to take a shot at a party for one scumbag’s crime. But I digress. We can cover this in the forums if you want. Thank your father for his public service. Tough job.
I don’t want to see Telfair in C’s green in his quest to catch up with Artest, Jackson, Tinsley…etc. This team has enough problems as it is.
Im with Brickowski. This isnt that big of a deal. People tend to go overboard when they hear something is designated as a “felony.” He will have a record, but so what. Street cred. And he wont do time, that is for sure. 80 miles per hour is about what 45% people drive on the Merrit Parkway everday to work. Anyway, i think if this shows anything it is what a jackass he is for carrying around a loaded weapon. You can take Bassy out of the ghetto, but you cant take the ghetto out of bassy. Hey Sebastian, you’re rich, fyi. Move your family out of the projects and start working on your game.

speeding at 4AM isn’t that big of a deal. The roads were probably empty. No mention of alcohol or weed is a big surprise to me.
The suspended license makes no sense. He’s a multimillionare. Why doesn’t he have a valid license? He’s probably been driving with a suspended license all season. Big whoop…
The gun under the seat. I could care less. He’s a multimillionare and has a right to protect himself. It’s a known fact he has guns. He probably has a concealed weapons permit (i doubt he buys his guns on the black market). But in that state it’s illegal to even carry a gun.
I could care less about this whole thing, honestly. Theres a lot worse that could have happened. He could have been caught with his pants down ala Eddie Griffin, no?
Telfair has done his job— as tank weapon. Danny converted #7 pick last year into #1/#2 pick this year. Brilliant move.

I think we all knew in our gut when it happened that the trade for Bassy was unequivocally a bad move. I think Danny must of sensed this too. Last summer I watched through the fire and tried to get myself excited about our new acquisition, but in the end all I saw was a 5 foot 11 ego who couldnt shoot. I guess Danny really wanted to get rid of salary.

What’s false about my premise, Iowa plowboy? The fewer guns the better. The Brits have the best system: no guns for anyone.
I grew up with guns and was a ranked target shooter (rifle) in my teens. I do not permit guns anywhere in my house, or my car or anywhere, not even under lock and key.
If you look at all the people who are killed or seriously wounded by guns, a staggering percentage are the victims of their own guns, often wielded by someone else.
Brickowski : im in aussie and strict gun controls were put into place after a massacre . It has been a better country for it. Anyone that wants to fire them have to go to a centralised place to collect and fire them.
It also makes me sick when people think theyre better off by carrying these things around. I couldnt agree more with you. Too bad there isnt enough of you up there to “get it”

Havlicekstb, why is Aussie a better country for removing guns from
the responsible so only the thugs have them? look at the crime rates using guns, they have had major increases over the years since australia and G.Britian enacted gun laws. N.Y and D.C here which for the most part , gun free zones have outlandish crime rates and i wont take my family to D.C. because of it.
Va. Tech is a gun free zone , they were all defenseless and the bad guys prey on that. remember taking away guns only removes guns from the honest folks , who have to beg for mercy and hope that the police get their soon enough to scrape their corpse off the ground
before it rots after a criminal has free reign.
We have not had major increases in anything since that has occured. Gun related crime has decreased and we havent seen anything of that sort since… can you say the same? judging by this weekends actions. i would say not. Keep using your constitution as your crutch . its taking you nowhere fast.
anyways this is a topic for another time ..

According to “The Australian”, “semi-automatic rifles were banned after the Port Arthur massacre…semi-automatic handguns can still be freely bought and sold.” Is this the current law, havllicekstb? This would not have prevented the Vs Tech tragedy.

Brick – It’s all making sense now with these ridiculous comments above… Keep your Liberal comments on a forum where it belongs. This is about basketball. Not about your foolish opinion about weapons. You are entitled to it, but I don’t need to read it. Your ridiculous flows of opinion monopolize this board and when it comes to basketball then fine, but this is not a political blog. Take it elsewhere. Here are a couple of quotes from some people that share your opinion:
Adolf Hitler -“The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing.”
Mao Tse Tung – “All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The communist party must command all the guns, that way, no guns can ever be used to command the party.”
Here is some support from the other side :
Thomas Jefferson – “False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.”
Or a little farther back:
Aristotle -“Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms.”
How about we quote one of the true Liberal Democrats that you all love so well. If more were like him maybe we wouldn’t have such division :
John F. Kennedy – “Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.”
Kennedy was right. If only people with your opinion were here at the revolution we would still be sipping tea and kneeling before a king. I like my freedom just as it is. Guns have kept your right to say stupid things… Just keep it on topic.
I don’t think this is really a big deal, but when you have a year like Telfair had and were part of a major trade last offseason, it certainly doesn’t help your image. It is also another firearms violation, which may show he never learned his lesson the first time.

I usually like to keep this forum to basketball (that is when I’m not discussing my vacation) but you have to admit that the subject of guns is pretty relevant
that said, I do welcome folks to take the discussion deeper on the Off Topic forums
please try to respect other people’s opinions and remain civil towards each other
Brick – I was trained right growing up. I don’t point guns at people… I am a hunter and do not own a handgun, but have been trained how to use them as well. We need guns in the hands of responsible citizens who are trained how to use them. If you take guns away from the law abiding citizens all you have is guns in the hands of the criminals. They don’t turn them in when we outlaw them. Funny how that is….
Jeff, the discussion of having a loaded weapon in your car when you are a high profile athlete driving at ridiculous speeds in the middle of the night is relevant… Not his right to own that gun…
Telfair is a complete moron. I think that he has the right to carry, just that he is unbelievably immature and needs to be cut loose from this team if nothing can be obtained for him. If we have no intention of picking up his contract the following year he won’t really get any more playing time next year. You already started to hear his grumblings about playing time, however small, so when he doesn’t get a “fair chance” to prove he is a player worthy of a contract he will start to be a locker room cancer. $2.5 mil is nothing for them. Use his salary in a trade to get the salaries to work, and give $2.5 mil cash to the team who gets him and they can cut him immediately. He might have some trade value.
I live about 4 minutes from the Bronx River Parkway, and travel on it alot. While the speed limit is 45, most traffic goes 55-60 minimum, and it is easy to find yourself going 65 , especially at night, whwen the traffic is quite light. It also does not have many speed traps, which was probably what Bassy was thinking the other night. Some of you are confusing it with the Cross Bronx Expressway (I95), which is notoriously congested, and ends up going over the GWB. Not the BRP.
I just don’t think Telfair will “get it”. It was the girl friend’s bag he took by mistake to the airport and got caught with the gun- right. Now a gun under the seat of the car and he has no idea how it got there? Oh, and the dog ate my homework!
Part of growing up is taking responsibility for your decisions. No valid driver’s license, unregistered gun, out at 4AM (not too much good going on at 4AM), driving 30 miles over the speed limit.
I’m not fooled by the boyish smile. NYC is as safe a city as there is in certain areas, at certain times of the day. However, if you are looking for trouble, NYC is as good as anyplace to find it. Telfair is “bad news”.
This is a newsworthy story, because as you get pro athletes being held more responsible for their off court behavior (NFL-Pacman) it impacts the teams and the fans that follow the sport.
When I die, if I have to go to purgatory God will say I have had training because I was a Celt fan in the early 2000s. It’s not hell being a fan the past several years but it isn’t a slice of heaven either.
Drop Bassey and somehow fix this lottery so we come out with Oden or Durant as a consilation.

I want no more driving with suspended licenses, carrying guns, driving 30 miles over the speed limit, etc.
If we are going to be breaking the law for crying out loud, all our efforts need to be made to “fix the draft”. It isn’t enough to be one of a handful of teams tanking to get in better draft position.
No, I say to you, the time has come, somehow, someway, this draft needs to be fixed. Screw the luck of the leprechan. I live in the middle of the country. Come on you local Celt fans, I’m counting on you all to step up, group together, take some MIT computer geeks hostage and sabotage these lottery ping pong balls. I need to hear Stern say the Celts get the #1 pick.
If any more laws are going to be broken, for Christ sake it needs to be done for the benefit of us all and we need to have Oden in green for the start of next season.

The timing of this for Telfair and pro-gun people could not be worse, in view of recent news. This ,of course would be much bigger news if he were a serious player, but he’s become completely insignificant to the Celtics.
After this season, a lot of conversations are more relevent than the Celtics in April. So I don’t mind adding my 2 cents. Times have changed since Thomas Jefferson. This is 2007, and there are 300 Million people in this country. There is something wrong when you can buy a gun at a flea market. Or without a national permit, or without a long ( 30 day min) waiting period.
If guys like Telfair feel threatened, go somewhere else. Get new friends. I think AI learned that earlier in his career. Things change , and sometimes your relationship to old friends are different.
This is such a drag
Telfair was considered a major talent in high school. He represents the RISK one takes in drafting high school talent and the “pitfalls” associated with projecting NBA potential. The “intangibles” like commitment, determination, basketball IQ etc. are elusive to gauge even in college players who have already faced stiffer comptition.
In Telfair’s case, appart from basketball potential, he is devoid of common sense which utimately projects to decision-making on the court. What responsible wage earner, respectful of the law, drives with a suspended license and in violation of the law, carries a loaded handgun?
That he feels it necessary to carry a loaded handgun, that he’s been in the vicinity of past violence while carrying a loaded handgun, suggests that this dude travels among other “heavy” dudes. His salary may place him economically “out of the ghetto”, but the “soul” knows where home is!

Here are the excuses.
1. I got pulled over because I was black.
2. The handgun wasn’t mine. I let a friend borrow the car.
3. I have a suspended license because I didn’t know you had to renew it. I usually have someone kissing my a88 my whole life and didn’t know I had to take responsibility.
Action to save face.

what a dumb turd! not to shift the blame but wouldn’t it be a good idea for someone in the cletic organization to make sure its players have valid drivers licenses? that doesn’t seem like a big deal for an employer to ask for and require that its players have valid drivers licenses.the only thing in this story that surprises me at all is that they didn’t find drugs. As Doc said nothing good happens when you’re out at 4am in the morning.
Brickowski said:
Well EJPLAYA, at least we can agree that Telfair is a moron. And if he defends himself with the gun as well as he defends on the basketball court, his potential assailants have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Now that’s funny Brick! (the D comment) Nice!
You would think if you were him you’d be playing it as straight as possible. This goes to show you that you should admire the athletes accomplishments but not think it necessarily makes them good people… I just wish Telfair had some accomplishments to admire!
suggestion for Telfair: Keep your money, go to college, play hoops(is that possible? if not it should be), learn a thing or two, and come back in 4 years. We’ll see you then.

Footey I live in White Plains and take the Bronx River to work in Mount Vernon- while you are correct about the average speed being about 55 to 60, I’ve driven back late from Long Island back to White Plains a bunch of nights and have seen some speed traps- one near the Bronx-Yonkers border where it says “Welcome to Westchester”- the other less conspicuous one is where the Bronx River and Sprain split apart. I always watch my speed there at night and never try to exceed 65. Wish Bassy knew better…
