C's Respond To Thompson
Ian Thompson had reported in Sports Illustrated that the C's didn't have a pro scout:
the Celtics -- unlike most of their rivals -- don't have a pro personnel scout traveling the league and collecting behind-the-scenes information on veterans who may be traded to Boston.
Today, Jeff Twiss refuted that report via email:
If you notice in our Media Guide, Paul Pressey is our main professional scout and our Assistant Coaches also share in these responsibilities.
Danny, Leo Papile and Chris Wallace concentrate their efforts on the collegiate scouting of talent.

Pressey is widely, though unofficially, credited with being the originator of the point forward position, combining the best attributes of a point guard and forward. While playing small forward for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1980s, Pressey took on many of the ball handling duties, even leading the team in assists for five straight years.
To me it sounds like Pressey and some of the asst. coaches should be fired and that money should be spent on better pro/advance scouts. Results show they haven’t done a quality job.

Well, they let Presey go as an Assistant Coach at the same time they let Jim Brewer go. Brewer was Rivers’ uncle.

The question is whether or not Pressey actually does anything or if, in the Rivers family tradition, he just continues to collect a paycheck for doing nothing.
Nice find, Brickowski. It sounds like he’s just another assistant coach, not a true pro scout.

I don’t care how you want to label it, the fact is, this management is horrible! We went from mediocre/poor team to one of the league’s worst.
Danny boy made horrible trade (Minny) after horrible trade (#7/Telfair).
At the end of 06’ what did the Cs have. They had Pierce, who at the time had high sky trade value. It was very possible if Pierce was moved to a team such as the Bulls something could have been worked out for: Deng/Heinrich and their 2nd overall pick with salary filler for Pierce and West or Pierce and Allen, etc. The Celtics with that type of trade would be a high caliber playoff team right now, but Danny didn’t do squat.
He went from a wheeler dealer to a frilly nilly and it cost us. Meanwhile he and Doc are secure and I’m sure whoever the scout is, if he even exists is secure too.
This franchise is a joke with Doc and Danny. We have to and need to go young. Both one of two things are likely to happen, we are either going to keep Pierce and not have the youngsters develop in time to compete for a legitimate title or we are going to break up the kids and get a Jermaine O’Neil type player.
Who would you rather be right now, the Miami Heat or the Bulls and/or G.S. Warriors?
Each year Pierce has less and less trade value. Once management realizes it is time to move him, his value will have steeply declined from what it was just a year ago at this time.
I love the Celtics, I hate management for what they have done to this franchise.

If we get the number one pick and prefer Durant over Oden, and assuming that whoever has the number 2 pick prefers Oden, we will get some juice out of agreeing to take Durant, like a future first round draft pick, from the team with the number two pick. Several teams (minn., chicago) were real adept at doing that last season.
Pressey is listed as an advance scout…which means he scouting the upcoming opponents, not personal per say….so if he is watching the teams play, who is scouting actual players? Assistant coaches? Don’t they have to work with our own guys?

It looks like semantics to me. The Cs have an advance scout who doubles as a pro scout. These are two very different jobs of course. Also, the assistant couches are suppose to do some scouting.
Thompson states that they don’t have a pro scout, which is true. There is no one by that title, but there are people with those responsibilities.
The truth is always somewhere in the middle and here it is.
The Cs have 3 guys doing college/international scouting, Danny, Leo, and the guy who trade JJ and a #1 for a 2 month rental. They r doing a fantastic job. Two of these guys r full-time on this, Wallace and Leo.
The problem is that they have a bunch of part-timers doing the pro scouting!
Think about it. Pressy scouts teams for upcoming games. This is his most pressing responsibility. Pro personnel scouting? It’s his second responsibility.
The assistant coaches? They coach and then may help out in the scouting.
Thompson reports that other teams know about this weakness. This lack of a central pro personnel guy is probably the issue.
Maybe if the Cs had a full-time pro scout in addition to Pressy and the assistants then things would be better. AND maybe they would stop trading for guys with bum-knees.
