Doc To Get Extension

Steve Bulpett reports:

ATLANTA - Doc Rivers will have an opportunity to coach the Celtics [team stats] next year and beyond. According to league sources, the club is prepared to offer Rivers a contract extension following this season.\

Rivers’ original four-year deal ends after next season, and he has stated he didn’t want to be in a lame duck position, though he did stop short of saying he would leave if the team didn’t extend his contract.

Now it appears that issue will be moot. While the salary figures and length of the new contract have yet to be discussed, both sides seem willing and eager to get something done.

The article concludes with this line from Ainge:

“A coach has to do what’s best for the team, and what Doc has done has made our players better,” he said. “But we all still have a lot of work to do.”

If Ainge wants to keep his job, he needs to get a better coach in here. This is the wrong move for the organization.

I’m not jumping off any bridges. The second they announce Doc’s extension I’m officially becoming a Toronto Raptors fan.

I’m sure that there are plenty of masochists who will gobble up the Celtics tickets that I will no longer be buying.

This definitely becomes a candidate for Dumbest All-Time Move. Has such incompetence ever before been rewarded so handsomely? If we ever get to forty wins in a season, will Doc be given a percentage of ownership? This must be a delayed April 1st post, quit clowning around, guys.

Oh Danny Boy’s decisions regarding the head coaching position have been abysmal. This is a huge mistake. rivers wasn’t going to walk away from $5 million. I still can’t believe this bum makes $5 million a year.

Why didn’t they just let him coach as a lame duck next season? What leverage does the guy have….. That he is going to go to TNT or ABC as an announcer? Certainly no other teams in the league would want him. Unbelievable? This ownership group refuses to spend the MLE on any players every year, but we continue to throw money down the toilet with lousy coaches. Does this make any sense?

Baffling

by Robb @ CelticsBlog on Apr 9, 2007 6:34 AM EDT reply actions

The Celtics have been very competitive with the best teams in the NBA of late. Considering that this feat has been accomplished with a DEPLETED bench makes one wonder if he actually CAN COACH. Considering too that Gerald Green has seen considerable PT, ditto Telfair, the feat seems all the more remarkable because these two individuals don’t know the first thing about DEFENSE! In addition, they have both been terribly INCONSISTENT offensively making their presence in the lineup as much a liability as only a tanking team could devise. Kudos to Doc!

by moskqq on Apr 9, 2007 6:40 AM EDT reply actions

There has to be something said for integrity and loyalty. If the coach and players get the chance to continue to grow together, there’s a better chance they will want to remain with the C’s into the future for that very reason. Doc came in two years ago with the knowledge that this team was going to stink. I’m not saying he’s the he’s the best coach in the world, but he should get his shot now that his players are finally starting to turn the corner.

Brick, don’t jump ship prematurely. This blog needs the “wisdom” and at least one steadfast voice “crying out in the desert” as though none can hear.

I’ve enjoyed your timely critiques and you do know the game! That some of us strongly disagree with you, at times, makes this blog all the more entertaining and better balanced. None of us know how this team will evolve but timely additions to the coaching staff (ala Clifford Ray) could change much in the coming year.

One does not lose a diehard Celtic fan so easily and there is much more work to be accomplished before our team begins their ascent to #17. One of the most unpopular moves in Celtic history was sending “Easy Ed” to San Francisco for a brash 6’11" center that had “0” offense, Bill Russell.

I understand bringing him back next year, although I disagree. What I don’t understand is the desire to give him an extension. That’s just craziness.

Worst bit of Celtics news I have heard since “Spurs win the Lottery”. Even if they get lucky and pull Oden, Rivers doesn’t have the ability to take them to the top. Just a terrible decision if this is true.

bulpett is usually spot on so i guess management wants to continue with mediocrity. i guess that tells you all you need to know about the direction of this team. too bad.

Did you really think that Doc would not get an extention?

Management doesn’t care what we think, why should they. They have there own internal meeting about what’s happening within the organization and their conclusion on what they think counts only, not ours.

They banged the garden all season and with a top lottery pick they feel they are on course with this team.

Our thoughts here have meant nothing!

I’ll continue to support this team if Doc is here or not.

Early in the season with the clock running out and the Celtics needing a 3 pt. shot to win the game, I was “outraged” that Doc left Gerald Green on the bench, perhaps our BEST 3 pt. shooter.. I had an over-inflated opinion of Green’s capabilities but now that I’ve seen more of Gerald I fully understand why Doc left him sitting on the bench.

I had other disagreements with Doc’s coaching decisions and, at times, Doc did make mistakes. But he did make the right call other times too when I questioned his coaching decisions. I was not alone.. Perhaps some games were lost because key individuals sat while others played but what if Doc knew these things yet for “training purposes” chose to do otherwise? Perhaps HIS goal was to make “complete” players out of these ONE DIMENSIONAL kids and part of their training was to make them sit in key situations until they bought the WHOLE program?

The recent improved play by “marginal” players can’t be so easily dismissed without acknowledging their improvement despite a coaching staff that can’t coach? By whose standards are we questioning their coaching METHOD? Mediocrity is doing what the “masses” would do. Genius is doing what’s required despite what the “masses” think! The “obvious” choices and coaching decisions may be different when coaching high school kids or when defying a prima donna who wants to march to his own tune.

I have enjoyed watching the Celtics play lately knowing that they’re “overmatched” but they still expect to win.

This ownership is clueless and someone has to take a stand. I’m taking mine. I wish the franchise well, but I will no longer support it financially.

I’m sure you guys will be welcome over on the Raptors blogs or the Raptors forum on Real GM. There will be plenty of exciting playoff action to discuss long after the Celtics seasons are over. Just keep it polite.

One year extension max. Anything close to a 4-10 start again and we will all be talking about OJ Mayo.

Hey look, I go back to the 60’s and the problem is the game has changed alot; we may not like it but the only team who plays fundamentally now is only San Antonio

Brick has his points as do many others here, but I’m willing to give it one more year with Doc and that’s it. For all the good he has done with this team, he’s also done things that make me want to scream as well.

My frustration lies with his decisions or lack of decisions at times on the court. Granted he may have management telling him to tank so that we increase our chances for a ping pong ball, and that’s why I’m willing to give him one more year.

But, he must know that he has no Leprechauns left in him to get him through next season if the team falls to medicore.

As much of a supporter and cool-aid drinker that I am, I won’t tolerate another bad season with this team if no improvements are shown.

by Ancient Red on Apr 9, 2007 8:13 AM EDT reply actions

Brick; Time to swollow your pride and NOT SUCCOMB to the detractors who are trying to goad you into abandoning this team… It’s a normal fan reaction to criticise coaching methods and management decisions when the team is floundering. Diehard fans HATE to lose!

Rebuilding a dying franchise involves tough times, tough calls, alot of second-guessing etc. One can expect an admixture of good and bad decisions but the eventual trend, even early in the rebuilding process, will be to see improvement. We are beginning to see that improvement but we’re only in the early stages of growth. Our worst danger is impatience. Petino and O’Brien fell victim to impatience and we, as fans, must guard against the same mistakes. Those that forget their history are bound to repeat it! To win horse races you need to have good horses. We are developing our stable now and with the right “ball-drop” we may save time.

Brick! Don’t be a “sap” and allow yourself to be influenced into deserting the team you have loved and suffered with for so long……

Wyc Grousbeck is the reason why I’m abandoning this team. No one could goad me into it LOL.

by Brickowski on Apr 9, 2007 8:22 AM EDT reply actions

Doc’s going on about hollering less in the games was interesting. Seems like he takes it as a point that he needs to do less of it in the future—but not until they play with fewer mistakes. Still I’m sure he figures easing up on it may extend his shelf life with his proteges.

I’m sure another critique he’s heard internally is on his x’s and o’s. but I’m not sure his pride would let him bring in an expert assistant for that.

Also he seems to just drop his record the year he was fired from his coaching history.

by Byrdman on Apr 9, 2007 8:32 AM EDT reply actions

All this means is that Doc will come back and coach to start next year. There is nothing to prevent the team from firing him come next December if the team doesn’t greatly improve. NBA coaches make a lot of money to you and me but in the NBA they make chump change. They are really the hired help and can be bought out with petty cash. Think about this, a big black stiff like Mark Blount will make more money from his current contract than any NBA coach in history except for maybe Larry Brown or Phil Jackson. A guy with a big contract like Raef will make more money in his career than any coach will. No reas on to jump off the bridge over this. They couldn’t bring Doc back as a lame duck. If things don’t improve Doc will be gone before January next year. If they do improve, then who cares if Doc is still coaching?

by JohnCK on Apr 9, 2007 8:33 AM EDT reply actions

I wonder when was the last time a coach got a contract extension during the same season he had an 18 game losing streak.

If this is true, I’ve lost all respect for Ainge. The only hope for this franchise to ever be great again is new ownership.

by WWBJD on Apr 9, 2007 8:36 AM EDT reply actions

I’m prepared, because I just ordered my Scalabrine jersey. Since he will be in the starting line-up over Oden or Durant or whoever the super-talented guy the Celtics draft is. Also, don’t fall too in love with Rondo. Next season, he’ll be back on the pine when Delonte is fully healthy. And finally those who think Green will make the jump next season. That will be hard to do playing behind Wally and his big minutes.

I am soooooo excited. Feels just like when the Celtics resigned Mark Blount. ;)

Brick; Time to disagree with you again… This ownership group does care what happens to this franchise but their vision on methodology is not YOUR method. It’s obvious that Wyc is a great fan….he’s at the games and “bleeds” green. He doesn’t just sit dispassionately but is emotionally connected and visibly influenced by what he sees. His trust is in Danny Ainge and Danny’s vision.

I happen to agree with the direction Danny is taking. He’s made good and bad decisions but in the main, this franchise is going forward. Our expectations for this team are rising and not stuck in “status quo” mode. Fans are establishing a fondness for our developing players. We LIKE what we see!

This franchise NEEDED to take a BOLD initiative to get us out of the doldrums. We need some luck now….as Red admitted, “I’d rather be lucky than good” when commenting on his deft drafting of Cousy and Larry Bird (admitting that both players far exceeded his expectations).

I don’t hate Doc. In fact, I’d buy him a beer anytime if I saw him. But there are lots of guys I’d buy a beer for, and very few that I’d want coaching the Celtics. Do the kids like him? Are they loyal to him? Do they want to keep him around? Sure, but for most of them he’s the only coach they’ve ever had. Perhaps they’d have a more valid opinion of him if they had a basis of comparison. While I don’t think he has set anyone’s development back, I certainly don’t think he’s been responsible for dramatic development on the part of anyone. Al’s growth this year seems to coincide with 3 key factors: being healthy, getting playing time, and Clifford Ray’s arrival on the scene. Was Doc the key mover in bringing Clifford Ray on board? If yes, then it was a good choice, but not a brilliant one, as Ray was already a known quantity with demonstrated value from having tutored Dwight Howard previously.

All I’m saying is, love him or hate him, I don’t think anyone can reasonably argue that Doc is the best available coach at this time, either in terms of skill or experience. If it’s possible to bring in a better coach, the Celtics should do it to maximize the potential of the young players they have stockpiled over the past few years, whether they are to be kept or traded.

If anything refusing to call out unathletic black athletes like Blount the way we do unathletic white athletes, just reinforces the racist view that all black people are great athletes and all white people succeed in sports because they are smart.

Brick, you ain’t go nowhere. Quit kidding yourself. And Moskqq, you’ve been making a good effort this morning.

But let’s not all get too crazy here. Everyone pretty much figured Doc would be back next year – otherwise he’d be trying harder now to win the close games (or would have quit earlier). And maybe this allusion to a supposed exentsion is only a face-saving device for all parties. Doc may get an extension, giving him the standing he feels he needs with the players. But the management may have a strong buy-out option, if Doc fails to produce next year. It might actually make sense.

by no kidding on Apr 9, 2007 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

Moskqq,
The reason we have had so few lottery level picks is that Ainge and ownership have refused to rebuild from the bottom up. And why haven’t they completely rebuilt? $$$$$$$$$$$$$. Wyc & Co. wouldn’t take the over-inflated ticket price hit that trading Pierce would have caused, so they have rebuilt with mediocre picks, hired a mediocre coach (being very generous), and at best, hope to be mediocre for the forseeable future.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Rivers is an ineffectual bumbling loser who has excuses for everything. His only value is to deflect cricicism from Ainge. This franchise is going nowhere under the present regime, because there is no accountability for losing.

Jefferson will be 30 years old and they’ll still be talking about how the team is still “developing”— that is, if they haven’t already traded him for injury riddled veteran garbage with a huge contract.

I don’t buy giving Doc an extension. We should be smarter than the Knicks (Anybody notice how they’ve done since Isiah was re-upped?). But I don’t support firing Doc either. Hey Brick, don’t let the door hit you in the butt on your way out. Doc is a mixed bag. He’s blown a few games but he also stuck with Tony Allen and K. Perkins and they made big believers out of me and other critics on this blog. I think he’s bringing Gerald along at the right pace. Al has blossomed. Only Rondo can bring Rondo along further (ie a shot). Even Telfair has swallowed his self opinion and is looking more like an NBA keeper. The NBA is a players league and Doc has this team’s players loyalty. That’s not nothing. I agree with moskqq, Wyc is at every game as me, not too far away, and he is a true fan. Not at all like the Gastons. Brick, face it, you do need a change of venue butyou aren’t going anywhere. Anyone who wastes time on this site is a Celtic fan for life.

The naysayers are proving my personal “grass is greener” theory correct again. Dozens of posts bashing the decision to extend/DOC/management. Not one actual mention of a legitimate, AVAILABLE replacement. Easy to tear something down, but what to replace it with? sounds like a democrat.

Its assumed by the Doc haters that there is a better coach that all of you have spent all your free time evaluating and are confident will do a better job. Every coach has warts. Just like the assumed idea to bring in a quality seasoned “veteran” that knows how to play that will immediately help (why would another team give up on that type of player?

look, I see Docs limitations (like ANY coach), but I try to focus on his strengths (the team still tunes him in, players are growing). and yes, I am a democrat.

Further proof that Ainge is little more than a scout pretending to be a GM. This is the worst possible move this franchise could make.

by D Dub on Apr 9, 2007 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

Doc has actually grown on me. He makes players earn their PT. Who still does that in the NBA? He sat Telfair and buried him when he was traded for the #7 pick of the draft. Rondo is developing. Green has his moments. Al Jefferson has emerged as a great post player. We finally beat San Antonio. Pierce has stayed with the youth movement. Players like him and play hard. Yes, he makes mistakes and questionable moves, but what head coach in the NBA doesn’t in an 82 game season. The big question is-Who is out there that will do a better job with where this young team is at? That isn’t an easy question to answer.

by DaveCowinsFan on Apr 9, 2007 9:57 AM EDT reply actions

Mark Iavaroni is a legitimate available treplacement. So are Rick Adelman and Stan Van Gundy.

Here’s what will happen if Rivers is extended:

1. They will once again squander the preseason by giving lots of minutes to next year’s version of Kevin Pittsnogle. Instead of getting the players who will actually play ready for the season, he’ll treat training camp like a summer camp for 10 year olds, where everyone gets to play. Their preseason record will be the usual 2-6.

2. They will start out the season poorly because the team is disorganized, it doesn’t run and it deosn’t play defense. If they get Oden, he’ll play spot minutes because he didn’t “earn” playing time from Perkins and Scalabrine. If they draft Durant, Pierce, Gerald Green and everyone else will be unhappy because there is only one ball and Durant likes to have it for himself, plus he doesn’t like to play defense any more than Pierce does.

3. If they don’t get pick #1 or #2, Ainge will trade his first rounder, along with Ratliff, Gomes and West, for someone like Kenyon Martin, whose agent will have assured Ainge that KMart has fully recoverd from his 17 microfracture surguries, or Pau Gasol, who will show everyone why Spain is the home of the matador.

4. The team’s record will be 5-6 games below .500 come Christmas, but it won’t be Doc’s fault. The players are too young, too injured or too stupid. At that point Pierce will have had enough and will demand a trade. You heard it here first, folks.

5. Before the deadline the Celtics will trade Pierce (1) to LA for Kwame Brown and Vladimir Ramanovich, or (2) to Golden State for Jason Richardson and Adonal Foyle. Maybe Ainge can squeeze out a top 29 protected future first round pick that the Celtics will probably never get, like the one he got in the Szczerbiak deal.

6. The Celtics will fall apart following Pierce’s departure, because the whole offense is built around Pierce. Rivers never even had the slightest idea that he might leave.

7. The team finishes with 33 wins, but eveyone is certain that with a great coach like Doc Rivers, the future is bright. In March, everyone on this board will be talking about O.J. Mayo, Darrell Arthur and Javarais Crittendon, and the Celtics’ chances of getting one of them in the draft.

Maybe I’m a complete sucker, and maybe the C’s ARE going in the wrong direction signing Doc up long term.

But I truly like him as OUR coach, and will support the C’s thru thick and thin. Period.

by mcpu40 on Apr 9, 2007 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

The only way I can swallow this is:
1. If Ainge and Rivers are secret 3-year tanking geniuses with a careful plan to build a perenial contender, and everything we’ve seen up until now is part of the strategy.

2. If it’s an extension for 1 year for about a million dollars, simply to avoid “lame duck status” but allowing the C’s an easy out after next year without having to swallow Doc’s 5 mil next year.

What I wonder is, what is Danny’s job status and relationship with ownership in all this? It seems like if Danny had to worry about his job, he’d hire a better coach. I wonder if Danny either has a long term guarantee from ownership so he has patience, or maybe for some reason this is ownership’s decision.

by Fan from VT on Apr 9, 2007 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not making valid points for discussion. I’m making a prediction about what will happen if Rivers is given an extension.

I agree with Brick, there is no way Doc takes this team to the next level.

It doesn’t matter who is on the roster when your coach continuely finds ways to lose games in the last minute of the 4th and can’t stay organized enough to beat a simple 2/3 zone.

And who do we have to thank for a Doc extension even being considered? That’s right, everyones golden boy, Dan Ainge.

So what exactly has Ainge done for us this year?
- Traded a lotto pick for 3rd string pg who knows more about firing a hand gun than winning a playoff series
- Added 4 rookies to a lineup desperately in need of veteran leadership
- Failed on several occasions to trade for AllStar’s who were available for .75 on the dollar
- Sat PP down for extended time in order to tank the season, then made an obvious NCAA violation on national TV
- And now he wants to extend Doc “no need to draw up a play” Rivers?

I hope all you Ainge supporters really enjoy College hoop, b/c under Ainge we will be scouting lotto talent for years to come.

The real problem isn’t that Doc will be back next year to finish off his contract. It’s the extention business. So come this time next year if the C’s want to fire Doc, they would have to buy him out or keep him (to save face).

Brickowski does have some good points.
1. I agree that Ivaroni would be a good coach, but would he come to the Celtics? He has lots of options. Will Stan Van Gundy be coaching next year? Same issue. If he comes in he has lots of options. could it be that the Celtics are floating the idea of extending Doc as a bargaining chip with someone else? I can defend keeping Doc, but I would look at options before signing a quick extension.
2. Oden will start and play as long as he stays out of foul trouble. Durant does pose some difficult issues with only one basketball. Drafting him almost forces us to trade someone.
3. The Kenyon Martin trade and the Pierce deals are really pretty funny. Hopefully Danny has learned his lesson on injured has-beens. It is always a possibility that the whole experiment will be a failure and we will have to blow it up. But that could happen with Ivaroni, Adelman or Van Gundy at the helm too. They can only coach the team given to them, just like Doc. Young players can disappoint any coach and injuries are killers. Both at once is tough to handle. Teams that survive injuries well are veteran teams.

Ainge’s work is key to what happens next, no matter who the coach is. This offseason, we have to get past stockpiling young assets and put together players that fit together for a consistent system. Doc or anyone else needs that.

Brick, I disagree but you could be right and I get a kick out of the trade ideas. ;)

Brick- If you’re going to go be a Toronto fan then go post on their website. Don’t give us updates on Sam Mitchell because we don’t care. Way to observe that your comments were whining predictions though and not points for discussion. One out of a thousand of your posts actually contain points for discussion which I think is what this board is all about… Have a nice life complaining about the Raptors inability to hire a good coach in a few years when Iavaroni sucks.

Birdnerd – nice thoughts. Agree completely. (except the Democrat part…)

Everyone go back and re-read Wildblue’s post. Well said. Doc isn’t necessarily going to turn things around, but last season wasn’t a fair test of his ability. It does prove he can keep a team from quitting which most NBA coaches can’t do.

Moskqq – Nice posts except for the kissing of Bricks behind. Are you his brother or something… If he wants to “take his ball and go home” then let him.

I think we might want to wait and see what the extension looks like before we go crazy. Maybe it is one more year guaranteed and then an option on the rest. If so then it is worth it. If it is 4 more years at big money then I think we could have waited…

When Pierce publicly demands a trade his value will plummet. Look at what Philly got for Iverson.

This franchise is in a hopeless no-win cycle. The coach doesn’t change, the general manager doesn’t change, the star player doesn’t change…. and the losing doesn’t change.

I refuse to permit the Celtics marketeers and the kool aid drinkers on this board to sell false hope. No mas, no mas. I want a winning team and I will only pay for a winning team. I want good basketball, not disorganized D-league level crap.

When I predicted 36 wins at the beginning of this year everyone called me a pessemist. LOL, LOL

Extending Doc’s Contract is good news for the team. the celtics needs some stability in management and coaching for these kids. Doc has done an exceptionally good job of coaching them to be great NBA players. we must remember none of them were in the lottery (except for Bassy) five from high school while others left college early most of them had no fundamentals and no understanding of the x’s and O’s of the game. they are now getting it thanks to doc. at least a two to three year extension is in order.

not huge but its a mistake to sign him this early

He should first take our team past the first round to give him an extension contract

We have to wait and see what length the extension is if it is actually given at all. Then we can complain or argue, etc. Bulpett is reporting through “sources”. It’s not a done deal yet. If it happens maybe Ainge is planning on a couple more years of youth and building and figures Doc is the man for that type of team. Even with Oden or Durant, we may need a couple more seasons of growing. I personally hope not but one never knows.

by celty86 on Apr 9, 2007 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Absolutely no reason to extend Doc’s contract. Should have been fired 3 months ago. Next year and beyond will just be more of the past 3 seasons. Doc needs to go and so does WYC.

Brick – You refuse to “permit us” to have an opinion that differs from yours?! Who gives you the right to allow us what to think on a subject?! The only thing that anyone who has ever been upset with over your posts is that you do nothing but complain. We come hear to discuss the team and ways to make it better. You come here to let us all know you are unhappy with everything that the team is doing but don’t offer realistic suggestions for improvement unless you’re pushed into a corner and even then they’re not really plausible. At least they are a suggestion though. It’s not an issue to say something that people don’t agree with. It is an issue to simply whine and complain and bring the rest of us down. One post saying you completely disagree with the direction of the team is fine. Saying it 5-6 times each article goes beyond that. We’ve heard enough. Leave for Toronto! If you are going to be a fair weather fan I might suggest a team like Dallas instead so that you have an owner that is willing to throw money at the wall and see what sticks. It’s not a sin to be financially responsible. Mistakes have been made, but so has Cuban. We don’t notice though because he covers it by cutting them and spending even more money! You’ve got to step back and look in the mirror and ask yourself why no one on this board gets as many “shut up” comments as you do. Others make whiny comments occasionally but mix it in with suggestions. Yours are all whine…

Brick I hope you remember to reply to your last post this time next year. I for one believe Doc will have a better idea who is ready to play among this group and those who remain after any trades that may occur this summer. this season has settled a lots of roles.

Rondo pierce allen west jefferson perkins is our core group for next year we can add a draft pick. I am betting agine will use the pick no matter our position (1-5) and get a player we can use either as a starter or regular rotation guy and he will be a center /Power foward to give the front court guys some rest during the games.
I suspect if we get a #1r #2 draft position we will get a lots of offers from teams for the pick but Danny will counter offer with players such as west Gomes Bassy et al plus i do believe he will go after Jermaine O’Neal if not Kevin Garnett with next years pick and perhaps minny’s 09 pick plus Wally or Ratliff and one or more of the players in the above sentence. Green too could be in the trade mix.
I believe the team of core players plus draft pick will have a productive summer in the weight rooom and conditioning as well as skill develoment the bond will be stronger among that group. as far as other veterans I am not sure who we would be talking about acquiring. I don’t know of many that we would want since they would take critical playing time from the guys we have.we do have vets wally pierce perkins west and allen all quailfy. otherwise the league has gotten a lots younger and the vets who avaiable are not the ones we would want any way.

The learning curve for perkins and Jefferson is so high right now I am sure the team as constituted gives Doc more latitude in coaching and stratergy ( X’s and O’s) that he will be a “better coach” than you can anticipoate
Brick I do like reading some of your post they are somewaht educational but mainly the focus on Doc and Danny has been somewhat misguided.

by Freeease1 on Apr 9, 2007 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Who the coach is next season is irrelevant. No matter what happens, this team is not going to come close to winning a championship. The focus should be entirely on Ainge and what he has planned for the offseason. Who do we build around? Who do we trade away? Which veterans does Danny plan on bringing in to make us more competitive? If Ainge upgrades the team and we’re still playing at a sub .500 level, then yeah, let’s get rid of Doc. But I’m not about to lose my S___ because Rivers is gonna get an extension. Looking at the mess he’s had to deal with this season he probably deserves one.

by dr_awesome on Apr 9, 2007 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

doc’s a softball player in a hardball league. he has mismanaged games, blown timeouts, and players developed only when there were no other alternatives because of injuries. what should we all go nuts because telfair finally scored a few ? i agree he fiddled away any cohesive lineup at the beginning of the season ditto last year as well. and there was no defense being played for over half the year except players running all over the floor. and then lets all stand around at the end of the game and watch paul go 1 on 1. no plays, no options, no wins.

Anyone who’s making excuses for Doc right now is teetering upon the precipice of insanity.

Say what you want about what could happen next year. Whatever. Just tell me this—how does the coach of the second worst team in the league get an extension? (Especially in a season where we’ve seen coaches get axed on teams that aren’t as bad as the C’s are.) How can you justify NOT having him go into next year as a lame duck?

If you don’t give him an extension and he wants to walk, let him walk. Judging by his performance as a coach through the years, the team’s record this year, AND precedence that’s been set throughout the history of sports, this move is mind-numbing.

People get their painties in a wad way to much over the coach. This is the NBA not the NFL. It is about the players on the floor not who is coaching them. The Celtics won two NBA titles with KC Jones as their coach. K.C. never coached again in the NBA after he left the Celtics. No offense to KC who is a great guy, but no one will confuse K.C. with Red or Phil Jackson. What happens this summer with regard to the personel is what is important and that remains to be seen.

Brick,

If you are that angry then quit rooting for the Celtics. That is a fair decision and I would respect you for it. What I can’t respect is all the whining you do on here. If Doc plays the vets then here you come banging your rattle and yelling about how Doc isn’t giving the young guys enough playing time. WAAAAAAA!! If Doc plays the young guys, then you bang your rattle some more and yell about how Doc is tanking and embarassing the franchise. WAAAA!!! If you hate Doc and Danny that much, then take a stand and find a new team. There is no shame in that.

What is this , “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”? What is the matter with you people suporting DOC and his extension? I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Brickowski is the voice of reason around here.

I’m not surprised by this news. Everyone could see this extension coming. It is another step down the path to the humiliation and degradation of a once proud franchise.

At least Danny has jumped squarely onto the hot seat with Doc via this move. Not that it really matters with Wyc “without-a-clue” Grosbeck at the helm. Where is the accountability for the past 3 seasons?

The only hope for this team is to win despite Doc. That absolutely requires Oden or Durant. The #3 pick or lower will be an absolute disaster for this team. But as long as Gerald Green can jump over teammate Spencer Hawes to win his 4th consecutive dunk contest, that will be enough for many of the fans in Boston.

Watch what Brian Colangelo has and will do in Toronto. Look at Mark Cuban. Ownership, management, players – they all matter.

Learning to coach as he goes along?

Iâ€â"¢m sorry but the last thing this team needs is someone learning to coach as he goes along.

Anyone can build good chemistry with the people around them, especially young impressionable ones.

For the majority of players heâ€â"¢s been their only coach, so Iâ€â"¢m not buying into that crap.

Now letâ€â"¢s take another trip down memory lane.

Do you people remember Ainge saying half way through LAST season that if this team were playing as badly next year (which is this year) as they were then he would have no choice but to make a move.

Yet the move heâ€â"¢s making is extending the misery and avoiding the inevitable.

I found this on youtube. I have no idea what game it is but it could be any number of games and any number of plays off a timeout this season or last

Watch the play (if you can call it that) which creates NOTHING!!!! but a bad shot and apparently another loss. No real “off ball” screens, no double pics down low to swing the guy around and get an open shot off the inbound pass – just 5 guys trying to get open – I can coach that.

This is indicative of what I have seen for the past two years time after time after time.

JohnCK makes a point that I’ve made before in defense of Doc. Witness the Celtics glory years with KC Jones looking quite clueless on the bench and proving it with his postgame comments. I don’t mean to insult KC but IT’S A PLAYERS LEAGUE. You can only say “Play Defense” in so many ways and diagrams. Those that go out on the court and do it are usually called “Veterans”. Some get it right away – Tayshaun Prince (surrounded by vets) was one. Rondo (not surrounded by vets) doesn’t look as good but he will be fantastic as his surrounding cast grows up. It is not Doc’s fault that Ratliff, then Wally, then D-dog T. Allen then Pierce all went down. So, we have no veterans. I really like what I see as this season ends and Doc has shown class and positive inspiration to his young minions. “Let’s get a veteran” is a nice wish in a perfect world. But that isn’t Danny’s demonstrated skill area. I loved the Kirilenko of two years ago. But he was untouchable then. If he’s available now after the odd year he’s had do we want him? I’m not sure. There is something that is going to be SOOOO satisfying watching these home grown players win. And, I believe that Doc should get the chance to be there. But that means next year, the last year of his contract. DO NOT EXTEND HIM YET and I’m a fan of his. He doesn’t need the security. He’s made $15-20 mil working this contract. He doesn’t need to work another day in his life. Doc, I’m with you but be a man about this security issue. It reminds me of Latrell Spreewell insulted at a huge contract that was not as huge as he wanted and saying “I got a family to feed” Your extension will taste so much sweeter if you’ve earned it with a winning record.

by Wildblu1 on Apr 9, 2007 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

I feel bad for everyone including myself. However, Payton and Walker put it best! Both Oden and Durant are going to need time to adapt the the team and NBA. They are perhaps a part of the long term solution but not the short term. A trade must take place for younger veteran exp. When I say younger I mean 26-30.

As for Doc well Wyc loves Danny, Danny loves Doc and Doc is good for right now! However, that being said I am sure that the other members of the brass will place emphasis on at least getting 20 more wins, making a trade and in three years or so making a serious run at a title.

Whether Doc is with or not depends on his own learning curve. Doc has the knowledge and that has been said by numerous members of the NBA community however, can a transfer that knowledge to strategy? Thats the question? I have a friend whom want Paul Westfaul(Spelling) as the next Celtics coach.

Brick, ah Brick hey bud, at least your fav women’s coach won a 7th right! If you become a Raptors fan you absolutely have to give up your passport. I don’t care how bad the Celtics are they are a Canadian team. I don’t like Hockey and can’t stand the Bruins but I would never cheer for any of the teams up in Canada.

Bird is a worse GM than Ainge. I wouldn’t mind bringing him in as coach, but he’d never do it. If Ainge is fired, IMHO Wayne Embry would be a good replacement. He was the one who recommended that the Raptors hire Bryan Colangelo. Wayne is getting on in years, but he’s a sharp cookie who might be induced to take the job for a few years if they offered enough cash.

You want wisdom and experience in the GM’s job. Young Turks like Ainge and Rex Chapman invariably get into trouble.

The notion that the Celts will extend Mr Rivers is simply laughable.
There is only 1 way this should happen—that a possibly better coach is unavailable. To repeat Rivers is to admit and repeat defeat.“Oh, there’s no one better out there!” I’m not a proponent of change for change’s sake at all…but many close watchers of Celt games are confounded by the senselessness of River’s game coaching. I was angry to sickness when they first chose him and his performance justified my malaise. If the org goes this way, it should be picketed and harassed. Choosing Rivers again is like stating, “At center, we’ve got the man, Scalabrine!” Very good intent..but doesn’t have what it takes. May the great spirit have mercy on us. I’m thinking of Utah. It is said that, Jerry Sloan is not nice to play for. But when I see Utah play , I see basketball that its fans can be proud of-SMART BASKETBALL! I am no longer proud
to be a Celtics fan with its current product…I cannot speak proudly of Rivers…when I see the product I don’t see hard work..and I don’t mean a lot of the players, I mean Rivers. I would love to get a sample of the day to day Celtic regimen under him…I would expect to be appalled. Frustra.

i’m fine with doc coming back. for some reason people seem to think he’s incapable of coaching a team that finishes above .500. but he coached this team to 45 wins a couple years ago when he actually had some players who had established themselves in the league. it wasn’t until that indy playoff series that people started to question his coaching intellect, even though that pacer team was playing awesome at the time. if i remember correctly they just about pushed the pistons to the limit in the following round.

I will continue to watch every game on TV, but I won’t give them a dime for tickets. I urge everyone to e-mail their ticket agents, or anyone you can to tell them how bad of an idea this is.

Well, for those of you looking forward to 45 win seasons, and perhaps reaching the second round of the playoffs, this is tremendous news.

I am interested only in championships, and I don’t think Doc will ever take the Celtics to that level.

The key: The length of the extension. More than one additional year would be absurd.

Brick, you did say that you would become a Celtics fan. Don’t backpedal on us now! You have our hopes up… I respect your right to not spend a dime on tickets and such. That is your way of trying to influence the team and is fair. What isn’t, is your endless diarrhea of the mouth on these boards. “if Rivers were coaching a womens’ team he couldn’t win a thing”. You’ve got to be kidding. He may not be one of the better coaches out there, but you obviously are so completely full of hate that you can’t make a realistic comment. Those who only tear down others do so because they have never accomplished anything in their own lives. There are big gaps in my posts because I have a job. Funny how yours are consistent about 18 hours of the day… Not much going on in your life?!

Anyone ripping Bird for being a bad GM after going on and on about how great a coach Rick Carlisle would be is obviously speaking out of both sides of his mouth. You have no credibility whatsoever. Also, anyone ripping Bird at all for basketball decisions is no Celtic fan. I’d let Bird run the C’s into the ground and still sing his praises for what he has done for our team. For the NBA for that matter…

Great thought JohnKC about KC Jones as an example. He really did nothing for the C’s and proves it is more about the team than the coach. Guide them in the right direction and get out of their way. As long as you have the right pieces… Next year we will be singing a different tune about Doc. No one will whine when we have a 15-20 game turnaround.

Make that a “Raptors fan” (See I can never even fathom being anything other than a C’s fan!

by EJPLAYA on Apr 9, 2007 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

If you really want to make a point of “not giving the organization another dime”, than you should boycott watching the games on television. It doesnt really matter whether you purchase tickets or not, as the real money is made through television contracts and advertising space sold. And these contracts and advertisements depend on ratings; without ratings advertisers dont want the space; without viewers contracts are worth little. So go ahead and sound all pious with cries of never purchasing another game ticket, but you and I and the person next door all know that this whole professional phenomenon we call the NBA hinges on the idiot box sitting in your family room.

and everybody knows, that everybody participating on this website aint going to stop watching the Mike and Tommy show anytime soon

by jurrasic earl on Apr 9, 2007 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

I never watch the commercials. Do you?

by Brickowski on Apr 9, 2007 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

But Doc probably would suck as a coach of a womens team. The womens game is sooo much different than the NBA, and then theres the whole recruiting thing as well.

Come to think of it, Doc would suck coaching NCAA mens basketball as well. The guy just plain cant coach.

by ucn33 on Apr 9, 2007 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

Doc has coached for 7 plus years in the NBA and he’s still an awful coach. He’s not going to get any better. This is a terrible move, the equivalent of circling the wagons. Doc took a bullet for Danny and this is his reward.

And I can’t believe that anyone would discount KC Jones coaching. KC was a winner at every level, including coaching (2 rings). That does not happen by accident.

Hey Brick, I watch the Gah-en commercial and laugh my backside off everytime they show it. A Sebas-shin Telfair night at the Gah-en…yeah right….LMOA….. :D

by aQua on Apr 9, 2007 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

Im amazed that that commercial is still even aired. If Im Telfair, Id ask them to stop playing it out of sheer embarrassment.

by ucn33 on Apr 9, 2007 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

I think almost anyone on this board with the team of the C’s in 84 or 86 could go deep into the playoffs… How hard is that… I’m much more impressed with Phil Jackson doing what he did with different teams and not as much talent surrounding two stars. KC is a great Celtic, but not a great coach. BJ Armstrong of the Bulls of the 90’s was a winner at every level but does that make him one of the greats in the NBA? Hardly. Jordan and Pippen gave him those rings… Bird McHale Chief and DJ gave KC those rings… 100% guarantee that Doc would have won a championship with those teams. If you argue that you are just trying to argue and doing a poor job of it…

by EJPLAYA on Apr 9, 2007 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

Yup, and Im sure you’ve never seen or heard:

“oh lucky, what is that horrible cologn you’re wearing”

“Need a ride?”

“because whoever gets it done, is gonna make VP”

“Let’s turn the freak switch to eleven…”

“The wonder of it all”

by jurrasic earl on Apr 9, 2007 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

ad nauseum

by jurrasic earl on Apr 9, 2007 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

There are many intangible qualities in a coach. KC was a lot like Raymond Berry for the Patriots. The players respected them and played hard for them, and both of those coaches kept the team together. And they had a knack for making the right calls during the games and with personnel.

I’m glad you’re guaranteeing a championship with anyone on this board and even with Doc Rivers coaching the 84 and 86 teams, especially since none of us have ever coached an NBA team to win a playoff series (that includes Doc). That’s very generous of you. Let’s see Doc win something before we immortalize him.

EJPlaya, congrats on having a job.

Jurrasic- you bring up a good point about the TV…I guess I am not as committed to the “don’t support the team financially” idea as I had originally intended. Hadn’t thought it out that much I guess. Damn, Doc Sucks. I’m blaming him for my poor plan too. It appears I will be blaming him for everything for years to come.

Mark Blount, it not even Close to this deal my friend, If Doc is granted a extention this will destroy all hope for rebuilding this franchise.

Doc and Danny must be like Stamps and Cheese.

WYC must think if he has 2 pair of shoes for every day of the week and Foodstamps and Cheese everything else will be ok.

This is a disgrace to this franchise.
And at the lowest class of a franchise a franchise can get within the league.

Dedicating the season to Redd then {Tanking} and now this….
This makes me sick.
Doc and Danny are a disgrace.

Some in here worry way to much, and spend way to much time defending thier worries. What happened to Faith, Celtic Faith?

WAHHHHHHH!!! OUR COACH GOT AN EXTENSION!?!?!?! I’M GOING TO ROOT FOR THE RAPTORS NOW!!!

by soap07 on Apr 10, 2007 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

YAAAAAAAAAAY!!! Let’s win twentysomething games every year. What fun it is with our wonderful coach!!! Give me a break.

by halfman/halfoyster on Apr 10, 2007 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

I mostly blame WYC for this decision. Grousbeck has even stated that he considers this “a hobby” for him more than a profession.

Does that make all you season ticket holders excited, or what?

by Tradetime on Apr 10, 2007 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

DannyAinge44 – Probably right. Went to far… Yours was a funny jab though. Short, sweet, and to the point!

by EJPLAYA on Apr 10, 2007 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

The C’s HAVE to give him an extension – so the team doesn’t quit on him next year or this off-season. The players have to believe that there is forward momentum and that they are doing the right thing. If they made Doc a lame duck, it shows the management doesn’t believe in this team going forward. They may still replace him after next year, but this is the right move to make right now. I’m happy for it…
