Up In Smoke

Making the rounds on the blog circut is this months old story about John "Cougar" Mellencamp tossing Bird and McHale under the tourbus.

From Blender mag:

I’ve known Larry Bird since we were kids. When he was on the Celtics and I was playing in Boston, he and Kevin McHale would come to my dressing room after the show and smoke me under the table.

Now there's a lot of directions I could go with this quote.  Henry of TrueHoop (who unearthed this story) questioned how it makes Bird and McHale look in their new positions (positions where they must deal with moral issues).  Fanhouse is taking the angle of tearing down the perfect facade of the Celtics of the 80's.  It is only a matter of time before Deadspin picks it up and runs with it.

Here's what I'll say.  If you can believe what Mellencamp says, then it does tarnish the image a little bit.  But most of us have dealt with the realities of our heroes being more human than we originally thought.  If my memory and the Internet can be believed, Robert Parish was arrested back in 1991 for mailing himself pot.  I still love the Chief, I just respect him a little less for it.  I'm not trying to be the moral police, it is just how I feel.  And it isn't just "harmless fun," to Celtics fans considering the way we lost Len Bias to drugs in 1986.

However, all we can do is shake our heads and hope that the younger generation can learn from the mistakes of the past generation, even if they are employed by the same men that made those mistakes.

Pot is no worse than drinking(smoking responsibly similar to drinking responsibly) it just happens to be illegal. Cocaine and that tier of drugs, has no purpose in society.

I’m with CsFanNH on this. I don’t think it’s fair to compare a player smoking pot to Len Bias. You can’t OD on pot. Nor do I (and this is strictly a personal view, obviously) respect anyone less for smoking up every now and then. You’d be surprised how many people do in this country.

Remember when that recorded phone conversation came out about Bush smoking pot? Man they burried that thing pretty quick, especially compared to Clintons’ “I didn’t inhale” saga.

This won’t change my view of the Celtics legend one bit.

Aw, shucks, that stuff grows wild in Indiana. Besides, I bet they didn’t inhale.

by Brickowski on May 10, 2007 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

I said it back when this first made the rounds… The majority of the league smokes pot. It’s not an issue… I once was with some friends getting autographs outside Key Arena. Jelani McCoy was driving with Desmond Mason laying in the back. They rolled the window down and tons of smoke came pouring out… I’ve heard about Gary Payton throwing wild parties in the mid 90s here in Seattle where Sam Perkins was up stairs smoking… and it wasn’t cigarettes or weed…

Weed is extremely common

Did anyone ever ask Wyc Grousbeck if he smokes pot?

by Brickowski on May 10, 2007 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

Who cares? It’s pot. Anyone who says pot is more dangerous than alcohol is out of their mind.

by nebist on May 10, 2007 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, basketball players smoke weed? Who would have guessed that…

This isn’t like players taking steroids in football/baseball(putting themselves in danger, and changing the playing field for others) Or like Len Bias doing lines of coke, a massively dangerous drug. It’s pot – can’t even pretend it’s a big deal.

This finally explains a lot of the moves McHale has made as GM!

I hope the fans in minnesota get wind of this story!

God made marijuana, man made liquor

by VT Bill on May 10, 2007 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

gimme a break….people need to understand the difference between marijuana and cocaine. The fact marijuana is illegal is another insane and hypocritical law imposed by our free country. It gets moral and goodhearted people in trouble. The real drug that needs to be outlawed is called ignorance.

by kamakawiwaole on May 10, 2007 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Len Bias’s horrific coke situation, is by no means even close to smoking joints with a musician. i’d like to smoke with larry and kev. tobacco of course.

by bdo3272 on May 10, 2007 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

Boy…I wish you had done some research on canabis before you posted this. If you’re going to call pot a drug, you should be out there campaigning to ban alcohol and tobacco which are 1000 times more dangerous than canabis.

Weed grows on earth. Naturally. It’s a gift from God. Or do you think the Devil himself “planted” it?

by CelticPrideInLA on May 10, 2007 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

my research tells me that pot is just as illegal as carrying a concealed weapon in a car while speeding with an expired license

I don’t smoke pot nowindays but I sure as hell dont look down at Larry Legend for smoking the herb. If I looked like Larry Bird I’d be high all the time too.

:D Celtics Blog Community is full of pot heads. I could of swore i heard this story in the middle of the season. I’m neither upset or disappointed with Bird or Mchale.

by ManUp on May 10, 2007 6:54 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t care about these guys smoking pot. However, I was shocked at how much Larry Bird smoked tobacco products when he was playing. I was an undergrad at BU from 1987-1991, and one of my roommates was on the BU basketball team. Bird was a regular in the training room, getting deep tissue massages from Mike Boyle and his staff at that time. Anyway, my roommate said you could always tell Bird was in the building because a cloud of cigarette or cigar smoke would develop whenever he was waiting around. Now, nobody ever accused Bird of playing like a greyhound on the court, but he did log 40 minutes per game throughout his career, which is shocking to me for a smoker.

by Fernsten on May 10, 2007 6:56 PM EDT reply actions

I think I’m more shocked that Kevin and Larry actually hung out together.

by Maxwell Smart on May 10, 2007 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

it may have been illegal but depending on the state it may have been a minor offense vs carrying a gun without a license for it.

And as far as protecting Telfair, he just sucked at basketball this year.
I actuulay wish wed get rid of doc and keep telfair under a new coach. If we trade West we are going to need a point guard(backup)

Carrying a weapon and speeding both can lead to very serious incidents (shootings and crashes). Smoking backstage is not the same on the dangerous scale. In terms of legality, yes it’s illegal, but so is jaywalking. And so was alcohol at a time. That was funny the person who commented that the big shock was that Kevin and Larry were hanging together.

let’s not forget, homosexuality was at one time illegal and considered highly immoral. This is a right to privacy issue. I dont care what Bird and McHale do on their own time, provided their action is not the direct and proximate cause of an injury to another. I dont see that as being so in this case, unless you consider Mellencamp sliding under the table injurious

by jurrasic earl on May 10, 2007 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

Jeff, worst opinion I’ve read on CelticsBlog ever. You are so out of touch when it comes to this issue. DARE groups all drugs together and that is a proven failure. Maybe if people actually educated kids about the truth about drugs/alcohol we wouldn’t have Len Bias type situations.
I’m very disappointed with you :’(

New poll just in from CNN (Celtics New Network), current approval ratings:

Larry Bird : up 5% = 105% approval
Kevin McHale: up 5% = 105% approval
Chief (no updates on his marijuana habits): holding steady at 100%
Jeff Clark: down 5% (for equating marijuana with cocaine; down 5% for equating marijuana with drunk driving; down 1% for trying to keep his cite ‘appropriate’ for future investors: down from his usual ‘giving it 110%’ = 99%

I agree, Jeff, this is one of the more ludicrous peices I’ve read on the blog.

I’m curious, do you’all think your religious practices play a role in your opinions on this issue?

by Mother on May 11, 2007 1:27 AM EDT reply actions

Jeff,
pot was legal in this country for the longest time. But it became illegal when white people felt threatened by the rise of black people’s music (Blues & Jazz) in American culture. So, the congress scapegoated and outlawed weed, hoping to put an end to these “threats” to the fabric of our lives at the time. This was in 1937.

Ever since then, Americans were constantly brainwashed into believing that cannabis is a drug. It’s not. It’s a plant. All natural, zero chemical, grown right here on Earth. I’m sorry if my initial reaction rubbed you the wrong way, Jeff. I was just disappointed to read that you were prejudiced on this issue. Cannabis isn’t bad. It treats and pleases people. Naturally. And it’s not known to cause ANY illness, unlike alcohol and tobacco which cause death and destruction. Think about it. The government encourages people to destroy their lives or kill themselves, but it won’t let people have a moment with Mother Earth?

I don’t wanna sound like I’m pushing, but you’re missing out on one of the great natural pleasures in life. :D

by CelticPrideInLA on May 11, 2007 3:09 AM EDT reply actions

That’s naive. Cannabis is not a “natural” plant anymore. They grow it in high-tech glasshouses. Its effects are in no way comparable to weed of the 30s or the weed Bob Dylan smoked when he wrote those fine tunes. I’m German, so maybe we get the special stuff from the Netherlands, but I would think your weed gets enhanced comparably. I don’t like it if hardliner compare weed to serious drugs like coce, but it’s not correct to say responsible smoking effects you just as much as responsible drinking. Weed stepped up, guys.

my goodness people, its my opinion

deal with it

by Jeff Clark on May 11, 2007 6:01 AM EDT reply actions

Dobbs, if you really thing that, you are crazy. People who smoke cigarretes don’t call it “smoking under the table”. That’s like me saying that my buddy ‘drinks me under the table’, but I was talking about Milk. And how is this “well known”? The story and quote just came out.

Jeff, totally respect your opinion.

Mahoney, if you think that back when they were kids they didn’t know a guy who grew his own Indiana Indica, your crazy. In the 80’s, hydroponics weren’t but an idea.

by DivingCowens on May 11, 2007 8:00 AM EDT reply actions

Jeff, the comparison to Len Bias and drugs is completely unfair. Guarantee you that most of the Celtics right now smoke weed. It’s not an issue at all. I’d be more disappointed if I heard someone like Jefferson smoked cigarettes rather than weed.

Weed isn’t illegal because it’s bad. It’s bad because it’s illegal.

by Gino on May 11, 2007 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

Most people have at least tried it at one time in their lives. It’s not a big deal.

as i said: not new news. bird and robey used to go out drinking and smoking all the damn time. this is causing a stir for no reason at all.

I am 100% positive that Mellencamp is talking about cigs, not weed.

by dobbs on May 11, 2007 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

Hmmmm….so the greatest frontline in NBA history all were ganja smokers? All due respect to those with a negative view of this natural product (here in Vermont we organically cultivate it in our backyards with no hydroponics, no chemicals, etc) but it’s plain to me that the effect on these players was not detrimental. To those claiming cigarettes are the topic of Mellencamp’s comments, please post some substantiation! Now, excuse me while I light my spliff… 8)

by help D on May 11, 2007 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

Why would Mellencamp even bring it up if he was talking about cigarettes???? Who “smokes someone under the table” with cigarettes? Can you smoke so many cigarettes that you fall under a table?

by DannyZ on May 11, 2007 11:18 AM EDT reply actions

People that think he is talking about cigarettes are simply in denial. That’s all.

Poor Jeff is ignorant. So are lots of people, so what. Just leave him and alone and let him think what he wants.

by Rainman on May 11, 2007 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Many good comments on this subject. It’s good to see that most of the people on this board are properly enlightened and not blinded my much of society when it comes to marijuana v. alcohol v. cigerettes v. other drugs. And yes, I also have never heard of “smoking someone under the table” referring to cigs – it is obviously the ganj that JCM is referring to.

by BonK on May 11, 2007 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

The reason Mellencamp brought it up is because of the irony. Here are two professional athletes in the prime of their careers who aren’t supposed to smoke cigs showing up backstage and sucking them down at a rate that he finds inconsistent with their status as athletes. Meaning, you’d think that these guys wouldn’t touch a cigarette because of what smoking does to your stamina on the court, but here they are putting them down with a touring musician who basically spends every night smoking and being in places filled with smoke.

I’m not in denial and I’m not anti-weed, for the record. Ask yourself this question: do you really think that John Mellencamp would publicly out two of the best players in basketball history for smoking marijuana? The comment itself, “smoke me under the table” is nebulous and those reading that by “smoke” he must mean marijuana is a poor interpretation, ESPECIALLY given the well-documented penchant of Bird and McHale for enjoying themselves after games with beer and cigarettes. This is not to say that Bird and McHale have never smoked weed, but the context of this comment from Mellencamp is being interpreted incorrectly.

by dobbs on May 11, 2007 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

I guess anything is possible, but if so, it’s the first time in history that someone has used the saying “smoked under the table” in reference to cigarettes. He may have mentioned the fact he was talking about ciggart

I “drank him under the table”. Am I was talking about coffee or alcohol? Probably alcohol.

Who gets “outed” for smoking weed 20 years ago? I’m not sure outing is the right term. It’s not like this is some big scandal. They aren’t playing anymore. It happened like 20 years ago. It’s possible Mellencamp didn’t think twice in mentioning the story. It’s not like Bird and McHale are running for president. Even if they were, these days you are still electable.

by DannyZ on May 11, 2007 11:21 PM EDT reply actions

CelticPrideInLA-

Respect your knowledge about weed man, but don’t say it’s not a drug, cause it is. Just cause it occurs naturally does not change that. And don’t say it won’t hurt you, cause, like anything, it will if you do too much of it.

To clarify, I have no moral interest anyone smoking weed. I’ve smoked it, my friends have smoked it (or still do), I don’t care.

Jeff-

Respect your opinion too, man. Everyone have different experiences with drugs and alcohol which shape their perceptions. People who are convinced that weed can’t hurt you just haven’t seen it in a negative light, maybe you have, I don’t know.

Still love Larry.
