BSG Idea & Advice
Simmons offers this trade idea and advice to Danny and company.
Speaking of trades, if the Celtics get the No. 2 pick and take Kevin Durant, here's the deal I want them to offer G-State: Paul Pierce, Bassy Telfair, Bassy Telfair's gun collection and the No. 32 pick for Jason Richardson, Monta Ellis, the No. 18 pick and Sarunas Jasikevicius' expiring contract. And while I'm doing requests for the Celtics, here's another one ...
Wyc, Danny, Doc ... you guys all need to shut your traps. Seriously. Stop giving interviews. Stop telling your disgruntled fan base that you could have made the playoffs if not for so many injuries. Stop raving about your fantastic young nucleus of players and how they're in such high demand. Stop talking about Doc's great coaching when he won 56 games in two seasons. Stop sounding so freaking smug about everything. Just stop. Don't say another word until May 23. And if you don't start showing some humility and urgency about what happened the past two seasons, and you don't start recognizing that your fans are legitimately concerned that none of you have any idea what you're doing, here's what will happen: you're going to get written off by the majority of your entire fan base (basically, everyone with an IQ better than 80) until all three of you are gone.
It happened to Jeremy Jacobs, Harry Sinden and the Bruins; it's going to happen to you. You've reached that do-or-die point with your fans and season-ticket holders -- trust me, I'm getting the e-mails every day -- and the fact that none of you realize it is more disturbing than anything. So stop talking. Wait to see what happens with the Ping-Pong balls next Tuesday. You have to believe me, I'm speaking for just about everyone who loves your team. The lack of humility and urgency after two straight crappy seasons has been appalling. I can't emphasize that strongly enough.

There is NO way that Golden State makes that proposed deal . Golden State is looking for size, that deal makes absolutely no sense from Golden State’s point of view.

No to the trade (GS would not do it) but the other comments our on point. For a team whose performance has been god awful the past 2 years, this organization is way too happy with itself. I think ownership is thinking they can keep riding the “young/potential” card with the fanbase but ultimately you have to pay off on that promise. If not you are the Atlanta Hawks.
I am not a JRichardson fan, and don’t see how a trade like that would make us better. I do understand where he is comming from on the Wyc, Danny, Doc issue. I didn’t realize Doc has only won 58 games(total) combining the last two season. Combine that with a 10 game loosing streak, when he was coaching Orlando, and a 18 game loosing streak, while coaching the Celtics….and boy-oh-boy, his resume truly stinks.
Oh well, too late now. We signed Doc to an extension and to make matters worse, the Rockets will sign RAlderman and RCarlisle will be next, after that, the coaching talent pool drops considerably.
Right on, Bill! And coco. The extension of Doc was as arrogant a move as they come. Jeff Van Gundy gets fired for a 52 win season, our guy gets an extension for 24. And according to some on this blog, we’re nuts for not being happy about it. Wow.

that’s a shit trade idea. jason richardson is not the player that paul pierce is, and monta ellis looked absolutely atrocious in the playoffs. i know he’s young, but that’s got to scare you a little bit.
and yes, my biggest concern about the celtics is that the front office is not showing “humility.” yup, it sure keeps me up at night that they’re not openly weeping every time they show up on camera. bastards!
sometimes it really bothers me when simmons positions himself as a spokesman for celtics fans.

Well, the fact is that the Celtics’ management has failed abysmally over the last 3 years. They’ve gone from 45 wins to 33 to 24. They’ve set a franchise-record losing streak, even though their payroll is bumping up against the luxury tax threshhold. And the product isn’t very good. They play half court ball with very little excitement, and they are so bad defensively that sometimes it’s hard to keep down the fried clams.
They tried to attract— and distract—the fans with cheerleaders, chatchkes, novelty acts and noise, but it doesn’t work very well.
So what’s the reason for this failure? Is it plain bad luck— or is it incompetence? Quite frankly, when Grousbeck comes out with statements like “we’re really a playoff team in disguise” I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Simmons may not speak for the entire Celtics fan base, but most of the time he speaks for me. So that makes two of us.
Yes, amen Mr. Bill. It is high time we turned the corner with this organization, ditto on both the trade proposal and advice.

I know what Bill is saying but if everyone was healthy last year, I think there is no doubt in anyones mind that we would have made the playoff’s. I think thats what Danny was reiterating the whole year because we were completely depleted. So I can’t hate on Danny for that. But if in the next three years we don’t come within an ear shot of a title… well then Bill is pretty much dead on. However I think Danny has handled the press well so far this year (besides how he dealt with the telfair-gun issue) and that most of the fans are more disapointed seeing doc back than Danny still in office. It’s a real who shot John. Ok, it was telfair.

for someone who is so critical of DA as a GM, that would have to be one of the worst trade suggestions in the history of the NBA.
JRIch was totally erratic in the playoffs. not dependable at all, and he has basically become a jump shooter because he no longer has that explosiveness going to the basket.
Monta Ellis also was pretty much a no show, and was exposed as a very inconsistent shooter.
and for that he wants to trade PP and Kevin Durant.
Jason Richardson is a punk. No way I trade model citizen Pierce for that bum. History of problems with his knee and ankles. That’s all we need! Ellis isn’t bad, but I don’t think he’s better than Rondo. IF we get rid of Pierce then we have to get something for him, not 50 cents on the dollar. We lose our only true proven star and we will have to listen to whining for another 2-3 years!
I think no one in the Celtic organization should talk to the press. I would say the same for Mike & Tommy. Then we’d have no insight as to what is going on with the C’s. In addition, I think the principles of the Celtic organization do have good insight into what is going on with the team (I think better than we do) and I think those people know what the fans are thinking. Fortunately, they will not let the fickle masses force us into a panic move. And EJPLAYA, I congratulate you on saying something nice about a Celtic player. PP is and has been a model citizen, both on and off the court. He does alot for the community here and in LA. As far as Simmons being the expert because of the many emails he receives, I know that I tend not to write something when someone or an organization does a job for me that I appreciate. I usually write or call when I don’t like something. Simmons doesn’t speak for the silent majority. And we’re out there.
he’s reaching a bit with the jeremy jacobs comparison. it hasn’t even come close to reaching that level yet…let’s see how wyc runs things when he has a team that is ready to contend for a title. if we get to that point and he’s still refusing to spend taht mid-level exemption or trade for a pricey veteran, then we should all feel obligated to pile on the guy.
p.s. this is why teams are so scared to blow things up and spend a few seasons at the bottom of the nba standings. we’ve all been saying for the last 2 or 3 years that the c’s would be better off if they just tanked for a season and got a high draft pick that we could spin into a legit franchise player….well, we’ve done that and we all seem to be even more angry now that it’s happened.

… you mean Big Al bobble head dolls are chatchkes… I thought of them more as keepsakes …collectables, even.
I like Monta Ellis quite a lot. Not J Rich, though. If you have Durant, your priorities are a good rebounding, defending big guy (veteran) and a serviceable point. You will get much more out of Pierce Durant than Durant Richardson Ellis – especially in the short term.
Unfortunately, Bassy now needs to go to Europe for a couple of years and work on his game and reputation – then be able to come back to the league. His trade value is in the toilet (thanks, Wyc!). Sarunas Jasikevicius is another overhyped Euro whose value is now exposed to just as a cheerleader/expiring contract.
I have no faith nor any confidence in Doc, Danny and Wyc – so I don’t expect anything but crap from them. My faith is in the lottery and getting #1 or #2. Yes, I’m hoping that even these 3 amigos can back into a winning situation.

I wouldn’t do the deal as proposed but Ellis and Biedrins (instead of Richardson) would make me change my mind. To say that Ellis looked bad in the playoffs as a reason for not including him is not valid in my mind. Tony Parker, who Ellis is similar to in style, had a couple struggling playoff runs before he became one of the top point guards in the league. I remember Coach Pop going with Speedy Claxton over Parker one year.
I disagree with Simmons about showing humility. Ainge and all are trying to be optimistic and upbeat about the team’s future. What does Simmons want them to do? Wear sackcloth and ashes and whip themselves?

Golden State, NJ, Miami and Houston had serious injuries, they still made the playoffs.
Richardson is injured to much, (doesn’t he have serious back and knee issues).
Simmons is wrong, the attendance has grown and will continue to grow for the next year. Worst case scenario, they’ll be able to market Horford, Brewer, Noah, YI or Wright. The TV ratings will have to go up.
Their safety plan (the owners, not Danny’s) will be to fire Doc, if they get off to a 5-11 start.
Lets go Celtics.
Nothing to add to these comments, only to agree with what I believe is the consensus in there that A) Simmons’ trade idea sucks, B) Simmons’ anger at management’s odd hubris is ridiculous and that C) Add the two up and it confirms my belief that Simmons writes from a great fan’s perspective but is a mediocre journalist. Peter May’s suggestions are a bit more thought out (trying to get Grant Hill in the offseason, for one).
Bill…I agree 100%…I don’t want to hear excuses anymore, like hwta we have been hearing. It’s time for results and not more marketing efforts. Let’s see some good basketball on the floor, then we will be happy!
