I Guess I'm An Idiot
Doc Rivers apparently thinks that anyone holding him responsible for doing his job is an idiot. Well count me as an idiot then.
Steve Bulpett (who was the star of the show last night) has the story:
We figured Rivers would jump at the chance to embrace the no-excuses mantra. We were wrong.
"No. I don’t think you can just say we’re ready," he said. "I’m realistic. If our guys are ready to win, we’ll win. If they’re not and they need another year, then we need another year. There’s no years on it. That’s such idiotic stuff. You just don’t know when it’s going to come together, or if it’s going to come together."
If a player has the requisite talent and aptitude to learn, then exactly whose fault is it if he doesn’t perform to his capabilities?
"I don’t know," said Rivers. "I don’t think it’s necessarily on the coach. I think it’s on both of us, but I don’t think you can say, ‘Now this year I’ve got to get them to do this.’ That’s just idiotic thinking."

Of course the obvious question would have been, “Then when is it the coach’s fault?” This is the wrong time in Doc’s career to be hedging his bets.

I guess Doc is setting himself up for another lottery year and one-year extension.

This “story” shows why Bulpert and The Herald are minor league in the newspaper world. The Globe has a reporter covering the NBA Finals while Bulpert wastes time and space trying to nail Doc down on predictions for next season.

Right about it sounds like a perfect time to have this coach bite the bullet and walk.

“I think itâ€â"¢s on both of us”—Partial quote from Doc from Bulpett article.
Now read the article in the Globe about the Spurs/Cavs game last night. Now read Peter May’s 6/10 Globe article about the Spurs. Now tell me what’s different other than that the Spurs are a much better team than the C’s.
I teach second grade and Doc sounds like one of my kids. If they don’t have their homework, get in trouble for talking, or get caught pushing and shoving on the playground, they always blame someone else. They never think it is their fault.
The difference is that I call them on it. I make them understand that they are responsible for their own actions and there will be consequences if the actions continue to happen. Only if Danny Ainge taught the 2nd grade. ;)
Truth be told, it isn’t what Doc said that was so wrong, it’s more a question of who said it. At this juncture, the “vision” has faded and the prophet (and his coaching desciples) are in full retreat and NOTHING that they say will be believed short of on-the-court PRODUCTION!

Chief, “itâ€â"¢s on both of us”—-two parties are involved, Doc and the players. I would add DA to the list. I really don’t see what the problem is here other than that there’s not much else to talk about so let’s pick on Doc today. We should probably schedule Danny for tommorrow and Wyc for Wed. and “lady luck” or lack thereof on Thurs.
This is why no one in sports can ever tell the truth, it happens so rarely that when someone does it makes an honest statement look like an admission of guilt. It’s a question that never had to be asked in the first place, everyone knows the answer already, the whole thing is a waste of time. If you’re going to properly quote Doc you should do the same to person asking the question, regardless of who’s wrong.

Even if the player has the requisite talent and capacity to learn Doc’s “defensive system”, they will still fail. Because it’s the system….a junk system that puts everybody out of position when the shot goes up. The NBA’s all-defensive first team wouldn’t be successful defensively using the blitzing defense full-time. Even if the player has the requisite talent and capacity to learn Doc’s rotations and adhere to Doc’s game decisions, they will still fail. When the game-decision defies logic….Defies percentages…and continually fails, it’s not on the players. It’s because the coach can’t coach.
At what point do Danny and Wyc see the obvious?
lol this is why i have givin up on this team awhile ago. they are lead by a LOSER! and ainge has fallen into that category as well. no celtics for me until they find the right people putting that team together!

He kinda has a point… it can’t all be on Doc, but he sure has his share and he knows it. If Gerald doesn’t come around, is it Doc’s fault or Gerald’s? I think it would be both in the end, but it should be more on the player than the coach, he can only help facilitate, he can’t think for the player. I think that now the players are more experienced with the offense, he will focus a lot more on the defense and things should start to click. With Rondo around showing what defense can do, it can only make the players around him more hungry. If Tony comes back healthy and we draft Brewer… that is some defense and it should bring the others around and light a fire under their butts.

NH, you have to have a coherent defensive concept before anybody is going to be successful. Doc’s team play a scheme full-time. A scheme that good teams may use 2-3 times per game. You can use a blowtorch to light a fire under the butts of the others…It really won’t matter. Because if everybody is mismatched and out of position it really doesn’t matter. It’s the system….and the idiot implementing it. Doc may not be able to think for the player, but it’d be real nice if he’d think for himself once in awhile…As in mixing in a zone from time to time and… alas…..a real NBA type defense.
Wow this is really depressing. It sounds like they are already throwing in the towel on next season. Danny better fire Doc pronto when we have another bad start. Have a feeling though Danny will stand by his man like he always does.
