Warriors Want To Move Up
The talk here in Italy is that the Warriors are trying to move Jason Richardson and the No. 16 pick to move up higher into the draft to grab Yi Jianlian. Their targeted trade partners appear to be the Grizzlies (for Stromile Swift, Damon Stoudamire and the No. 4 pick), the Celtics (for Theo Ratliff and the No. 5) and the Bobcats.
Prepare to see a whole lot of this kind of rumor (where Theo and the 5th pick is tossed in as a posibility for any and all trade ideas).

that’s just not gonna happen. to be honest i’d be shocked if the celtics traded the 5th pick. unless it’s for a certified star like kg, in which case even then i’m not sure danny would want to. i see theo being shipped out, and i do honestly like the idea of rashard or kirilenko coming in. i just wish i could see some gerald wallace rumours flying about.
I don’t see anyone taking these deals. But one thing about this rumor is the Memphis move. Again, Memphis is rumored to want to make a move of the Swift and Stoudamire contracts. I believe Theo, West, Telfair and #5 can get Gasol from this financially riddled, “for sale” team. They get major financial relief and get younger. They draft 4 and 5 land FL’s Horford and Brewer and the hype goes on.

No to JRich…No to Gasol..we can do better
Who’s available, on a team desperate to relieve salary, and better than Gasol? I’m all for it…let’s see your proposal.

They don’t need Richardson. If you trade the pick, you trade for a big. I’m not high on Gasol because of the way he handled the losing last year. Instead of helping to make the situation better, he said Memphis wasn’t going to win, so trade me. We don’t need that kind of attitude on the Celtics.

There are so many variables being discussed in the different trade rumors and ideas. There doesn’t seem to be a simple, clear cut scenario that would make the team better long-term. This might be a year to just KISS. Take the #5 pick, the best available team fit, and figure out the rest of it later. One thing not being taken into account is the improvement of players already on our roster (who we want to keep) and the fact that the same players will be together for 2 years in a row. If TA and Wally can play I think we’ll be a much better team anyway.
You can get gasol without giving up the pick. I bet a package of green, west, theo and a future pick (from minny) will do it. Giving up the 5th pick and theo to move back 11 spots and get a redundant player makes no sense. And it makes even less sense to give up two chips (theo and the #5) to do it.

If Yi isn’t there at #5 or if the Celtic’s are thinking Al Thornton, trading down with Charlotte (#8 and #22) would make sense. We would still have Theo’s VALUABLE trading chip plus “fillers” for yet another good player.
With #s 8, 22, 32 we could look at a BIG (a 5 or a 4), a PG to back up Rondo or combine the #s 22 and 32 to move up in the draft for a special player/need.
Since Danny seems to be getting “feelers” rather than FIRM trade offers I doubt if he knows what he’ll do on draft day. It’s been said that the closer we get to June 28th, the more urgent and earnest the interest in #5 and Ratliff’s expiring contract. Until we all hear the right trade offer, speculation will continue.
Fans view professional sports from a competitive perspective with the ultimate goal a championship. Bloggers view the team components as prospective pieces to complete the championship puzzle. But professional sports represent BIG BUSINESS and as an expensive INVESTMENT owners have a different set of priorities. Their first priority is to make money and the first step is to reduce expenses (i.e., reduce payrole). What they envision as a successful enterprise is not necessarily what the GM and coach want.
Like it or not, the Celtic’s are one such organization and like other teams the LUXURY TAX is the villain. Ratliff’s contract may have more appeal than a vauable #5 in a strong draft.

As far as the owners making money, I have no problem with that. But to me the best way to make money is to put the best team on the floor. I also don’t believe fiscal responsibility is a bad thing. My problem, though, is with the salary cap, but more so with the luxury cap. Both were put in to create parity. This isn’t working when teams like Dallas and New York spend any amount they want to. But, that hasn’t worked for those teams, especially the Knicks. I don’t have a problem with the C’s owners not wanting to go into the luxury tax. One thing we forget…we may be the only team in the league doesn’t get money from the concessions. As I understand it that all goes to the Bruins ownership. I also think our lease with the Bruins is a problem. So our ownership is at a real disadvantage in this regard. Please correct me if I’m wrong about the last statements. I don’t think it’s fair of us fans to expect the owners to pay without limits.
