KG Deal "Hits a Snag"
League sources have reported that the Boston Celtics are still in talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves to acquire Kevin Garnett, but a new name in the deal is causing a snag.
The deal to move Garnett to Boston would include Al Jefferson and the fifth pick, and now the Timberwolves want to ship out Marko Jaric and attain Gerald Green.
The Celtics are pushing back on Jaric, who has four years left on his $40 million contract. The big guard from Serbia averaged just over five points last season and has never averaged more than 10 points per game during his five-year career. The 21 year old Green, on the other hand, carries a low price tag and untapped potential.
See, now that's just gettin greedy Mr. McHale.

I’d give them Green for Jaric if they take Telfair too…

Cmon. Green #5 Jefferson Telfair for KG Jaric? Please people please
by Ball Dont Lie on Jun 21, 2007 12:25 PM EDT reply actions
Obviously no if Jaric and Green are part of the deal.
The more interesting part of this is that someone is actually confirming that Theo would NOT be part of the KG deal. This lends credibility to the idea that Ainge is legitimately working towards swinging TWO major deals, whether it’s KG and Marion, KG and Lewis, etc.
Well, getting KG in a trade was a “pipe” dream to begin with. It’s time to back away and explore other potential deals. The Wolves don’t seem pressed to deal KG but are testing the “ceiling” to see if there is a deal out there that they can’t refuse.
To make a trade you need at least two teams that want to TANGO and that means an exchange of fair value, not robbing the cookie jar! Pass, Danny unless the offers seem more practical. The Wolves must sense that you are DESPERATE!

THAT’S TO MUCH FOR TO LITTLE. GARNETT IS AN GREAT PLAYER GOING DOWN HILL SOON. NOT TO MENTION HE COULD OPT OUT AFTER THIS SEASON. AL IS AN GOOD PLAYER THAT IS GOING TO BE GREAT. IF DANNY BOY MAKE THIS DEAL IT WOULD BE THE WORST RISKY TRADE IN CELTICS HISTORY. I WOULD RATHER SIGN DINO RADJA BACK FOR AN 1 YEAR 45 MILLION $ CONTRACT

After the Telfair deal, the rest of the league must think Ainge has “MORON” tattooed on his forehead. If Ainge trades Big Al for Garnett, not to mention any of this other nonsense, the rest of the league will be right.
I remember Wyc constantly saying he was in this for the long hual, that he did not get rich by being a “day trader.” If he greenlights this idiotic proposal, it means Wyc has gone over the the hedge fund dark side.

Gee I wonder if McHale offered Blount to. This is rediculous. All I can say, if McHale got greedy and walked away from getting Jefferson, the number 5 and Theo’s contract trying to get Jaric thrown in, he is dumber than Ainge. I am starting to not believe these reports. If Al Jefferson and the five pick were really on the table, the deal would have been done by now.

Not that I really put any stock in all this….
But a deal in which Ainge and McHale are battling wits? Nothing could be more fascinating – except maybe watching two squirrels play Monopoly for like 10 hours.

I don’t get how we cannot include Ratliff’s deal. Garnett would cost Ratliff the farm to move Garnett’s contract. Huh? How many assets are we going to trade away for Garnett’s deal? Are we going to bring Davis back? How does this work!!!!?!?!!
This whole deal is dumb.
Garnett

Ratliff
Jefferson
Telfair

Scalabrine
doesn’t even work under trade checker! Who/what else are we going to include to make this deal work?

Just kill this deal and go after Lewis. Then draft a role player with the #32 pick. No Al no future
by DinoRadjaLives on Jun 21, 2007 12:55 PM EDT reply actions
Wait a second…say Ainge could get Marion or Lewis for Theo straight up. Wouldn’t a package of Al, #5, Wally, and Theo for KG and Marion be worth it? I mean I know Al has a promising future ahead, but let’s not forget that before last Decemeber we were all wondering whether or not he may be a bust. It’s not like his ankle problems have magically subsided. He had a great 4-5 months of basketball. That’s it. I don’t think we can underestimate Kevin Garnett and the passion he will undoubtedly bring to this team, and more importantly this basketball city. No free agents want to come here because no one can remember how magical this city and fans can truly be. Let Pierce, KG, and Marion go to war with anyone in the East. I think after 15 years of agony this would at least bring some passion back to this organization.
Anyone else severely depressed that we’re talking about this right now instead of:
A – should we take Oden or Durant? and
B – what coach should we hire?
This team is not even close. Does anyone here seriously think that KG and PP could beat Lebron James? Even if they could, could they get beat any team from the west? I don’t think so which makes this deal pointless… unless you want to sell lots of shirts.
Lovethecees hit it right on the head. Danny is no longer in control. Mchale playing him like a puppet right now and is getting possibly two future all-stars for a has been all star. NOT GOOD!

If this is all the keep Pierce happy I’m pissed. I do agree with Hoops though about the Cs keeping the Theo contract in exchange for Marion. That could make the whole thing work but I don’t see the Cs being able to afford all of this.

If this happens, Wyc is going to be in the running with John Y Brown for worst owner in Celtics history — and that’s saying something given the Gaston’s, Irv Levin’s etc that have controlled this team in the past.
It’s amazing how smart people can do such stupid ass things.
Forget Danny, if this train wreck happens, it’s all on you Wyc.
You people act like we know any of this stuff is true. Sources say? Yeah sources and three bucks will get you a esspresso at Starbucks and not much else. Can we at least hold off the suicides until there is actualy a deal and we know what it is? Like I said above, I am starting to really doubt these reports.

Kuberski33,
I think you are right something is going to happen. But, we just won’t know the details until it does. It is pointless to get all worked up about Danny getting robbed or the ownership selling out the team until you actually see what happens. What if the Celtics manage to get KG and keep Jefferson? I would think people would be singing a different tune then. We just don’t know.

this is a little off topic, but has anyone been
able to calculate the almost impossible and extremely
large improbability of the top two teams in the draft
not getting a 1 or a 2 between them , coupled with
portland and also seattle both defying the odds
and moving up along with atlanta moving in front of memphis
too
Danny is not stupid. Neither is Wyc. He must posturing for others to imrpove on their offers to him by making it look like something is imminent with Minny. This ploy would serve Danny’s friend Kevin as well in their attempt to get bast value for KG (from Chi probably). I know this is wishful thinking – all I can do is pray and you all should as well.
Can’t really blame McHale…once you take Ainge to the cleaner’s once you get greedy. I guess he wanted to see if Ainge could “top” last year’s draft day deal.

Not to long ago people on here were saying we are to young. That we veterans. Now that we have a shot at veterans you want to keep the youngs. You have to give to get. 21 years is long enough!
You dont win titles in this day by holding on to all your picks and delveloping them. Look at the last title winners. Look at the teams that have the most homegrown players ( Seattle, Boston). Pretty clear to a 5th grader.

Pierce is nearing the end. Garnett is 31 and has never been able to carry a team deep into the playoffs. Apparently the trade requires that we forfeit every asset except Pierce. This isn’t rocket science. Prettly clear to a 5th grader.

Danny might need a brain doctor…….or maybe he will “sleep with the fishes”
“Why, anybody can have a brain. That’s a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven’t got: a diploma.”
Name the movie and substitute the word “coach” for “diploma” and maybe all this does not matter.
Not going happen, not going to happen (hands covering ears blocking out all sounds) Not going to happen….not going to…….
There is no way that Wyc is paying for Pierce, Garnett, and Marion. get that out of your head. It will be Pierce and Garnett and 10 scrubs for a couple years. We’ll be pretty good and then injuries and age willcatch up and we won’t make the playoffs in year 3. In year 4 we will get back to the playoffs, but get bounced in round one and Ainge will resign. It will take the new GM YEARS to rebuild the franchise. So if you want to see the celtics have a future you might want to check back in 2017.
What is wrong with you guys? We’re going to have to make some kind of trade to get better. What are you saying, go to war with the same team we had last year plus another rookie? That’s a 36 win team. I don’t want that.
You’re going to have to give to get. Everything Danny has done has been in preparation for this offseason. Have faith!

Again, name any other NBA team with a stud 22 year old PF, who averaged 19 and 10, who would even make that player available? And hypothetically if they did it wouldn’t be for a player nine years his senior who will make twice as much as money. And then to top it off you include two young possible future stars (#5 and Green)? Wow! Then Minny wants us to take Jaric. Pretty soon Rondo will be included as well. If you think Ainge is a good drafter the #5 should be a future all star. Jefferson will be a future all star and Green might even be one, though less likely. So your trading two future all stars and possible third for a watered down version of what Garnett used to be for over 30 million a year (including Jaric’s cash). Well McHale will be involved in the two biggest fleeces of all time. The Joe Barry Carroll for Parish and McHale trade and this one.

Master Po, that was no less than the Wizard from “The Wizard of Oz” – great movie, btw.
I like KG, but I like AJ’s upside better. The question is whether he & the other kids, #5 develop fast enuf to keep up w/ PP…who is still in his prime, but for how much longer. I can kinda see the warped logic, however – pairing 2 superstars in thier primes is better than 1 superstar 1 possible star… for winning right now. This is a classic “mortgage the future” trade.
I’d rather see Danny take a gamble on Yi b4 I’d do any of these trades. And there is no way Wyc would cough up the $$$ for Marion, PP, AND KG. Just fugetaboutit. Wyc isn’t Mark Cuban.
Doesn’t Wally kinda have to go if KG comes in?
I mean Organizationally, not to make the money work.
Wally was one of the more popular players in Minny, and got sent out because he and KG were clashing right?

First, Jefferson averaged 16 ppg. 16 is not 19. I understand that he’s valuable, but the blog population is being delirious.
@gobo: I think Wally will have to go anyway to make the contracts match. There is just not enough crap to Ratliff’s 11.6 to get close enough to Garnett’s 21. :)

Portland with Zach Randolph— but that’s because (1) he’s a selfish thug, and (2) they won the lottery, instead of losing it.
So you guys wanted a veteran, eh? You wanted to get older rather than younger, eh? Well, welcome to the world of Marko Jaric.
There is an old syaing: “Be careful of what you ask for, because you just might get it.”
Well, you’re getting it.
It just gets worser and worser…and worser. I can’t believe Ainge will trade Big AL. If he does, I’m through after 52 years—as if anyone will care.

Siggy,
What we’re saying is you shouldn’t trade all of your assets in one deal and Al should be untouchable. If you use the pick on a guy like Brewer you can still move Theo, Green, the pick from Minny and Gomes in a deal to get another vet and you woudl still have Al and Brewer. How much do you think it would take to get Lewis in a sign and trade? Would you rather move it all for KG or would you rather start Rondo, Brewer, Pierce, Al and Lewis.

Now we have Dale Arnold saying bring in Garnett even though he has never probably watched him play more than two games. Too many people getting caught up in a high priced player who can’t win.
We should have learned our lesson from the Alen Iverson mvoe to Denver I’ll bet Denver is thrilled at their playoffs results. So much for the two superstars on a team to make a playoff run.
We need to have all of us who want to keep Jefferson to call the Celtics and leave a message to Danny, or Wyc or Twiss(Phone 617-854-8000). We need to let them know that Jefferson is their new franchise player and we don’t need a 31 year old retread who may decide to leave after next year.

It’s bad enough that Jefferson has a better future than Garnett, so why again are we also incuding the #5 pick (Horford/Brewer) and Gerald Green? Btw jaric is Serbian for way overpaid Jiri Welsh.
Minny’s possible line-up next year: Conley, Foye, Green, Horford, and Jefferson. Now THAT’s rebuilding the right way.
Rondo – can’t shoot
Pierce – can’t pass
Tony Allen – can’t think
Perk – can’t play
Garnett – can’t win
Sounds like a great deal to me!

I think it’s safe to say it is time to pull everything off of the table and let everyone wise up! This is getting more ridiculous by the day! Both the Wolves and Celtics have been horrible for the last few years, so why would should we be swapping as many players as we have already – or will? The Wolves were asking too much to begin with, so hopefully this smartens Ainge up to just say no. Proceed with the draft and try for a veteran with the Ratliff contract afterwards (Gasol, Marion, Lewis). I am not opposed to using some of our young talent to acquire veterans (that is what Ainge got them for) – I just don’t want him to use every single one we have all on one bad deal that may set the franchise back even further!
Does anyone know how Minny’s dancers compare to ours? This might be what evens things out.

McHale is leaking like a hole on this one… that’s why you are getting their ridiculous starting point.
The most logical trade is for Minny to get back Picks and clear cap space. KG, Hudson, Jaric for expiring deals (or maybe one year left) plus picks – which they are woefully short on.
Perk (decent affordable young guy), Telfair (expiring), Theo (expiring), Wally (popular in Minnny only two years left), Green (young cheap high upside), Gomes (cheap expiring), West (cheap expiring) are all guys that could fit the bill so to speak. In terms of draft picks, we have two very valuable picks in this draft, all our first and second rounders, an extra second rounder in 2008, and the Minny pick. We can make the deal sans AJ and I think if a deal is made we will (or we’ll keep #5). Also with respect to all the young guys on the team, they were all acquired with not so high draft picks, in decent drafts, I don’t blame DA for viewing them as what they are: good finds, but replaceable. In fact we can make this deal and still have enough left to move up and grab Sean Williams, who is better in every aspect than Perk right now:
Rumors boys! Just Rumors… Let’s wait and see before we all slit our wrists!
I don’t think I would trade Big Al straight across for KG right now anyway… Let alone this other. How about KG for #5, Next year’s first rounder, Green, West, TA, Perk, and Theo’s contract…Works in the trade machine. I know this leans more our way by a little, but GG’s upside, a #5 in a very deep draft, next years pick, and some very nice players with potential. Minnesota knows they aren’t going anywhere without starting over and a lot of these pieces can be traded easily or cut due to their salaries being low. We could even throw in some cash to cover a salary or two if they didn’t think they would be part of their plans.
They really are only giving up 2 years worth of KG. They know he isn’t going to re-up after this and so when you compare that to what we are giving them it really isn’t that much of a stretch. Not one big name, but a lot of value to rebuild around.
Big Al is more untouchable IMO than PP…

Garnett’s agent, Andy Miller, told ESPN.com’s Chris Sheridan that Garnett made it known to the Wolves and Celtics late Wednesday that he had no interest in playing for Boston. The implication was clear: If Minnesota dealt him to Boston, Garnett would opt out of his contract next summer.
“The Boston trade isn’t happening,” Miller told Sheridan on Thursday. “If a trade were to happen, that’s not a destination that we’re interested in pursuing.”
Asked where Garnett would prefer to be dealt, Miller replied: “Too early. Ask me in two days.”
Garnett has “a good handle on the possibility of being traded,” Miller said. “Kevin is an extremely loyal person, and loyalty is not a common factor among pro athletes, but in this situation he understands he has to put his long-term considerations ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ long-term considerations.”
Kevin McHale, the Timberwolves’ vice president of basketball operations, has been pressed of late on Minnesota-Boston discussions over Garnett following Danny Ainge’s admission to The Boston Herald that he has talked to McHale about Garnett.
“Who knows what’s going to happen?” McHale told reporters Wednesday after the Wolves worked out college stars Jeff Green and Al Horford in preparation for the draft. “But we’re not out there actively shopping Kevin Garnett around the NBA. I can tell you that much.”
Because Garnett can opt out of his contract after next season, the Timberwolves run the risk of losing him without compensation if they don’t trade him before then and he tires of not playing on a competitive team. That has ramped up speculation that he could be on the move, and the possible destinations are popping up all over the place as they always do this time of year.

A new Sheridan article over at ESPN says Garnett is saying he doesn’t want to play for Boston and will opt out if that is his destination.
“The Boston trade isn’t happening,” Miller told Sheridan on Thursday. “If a trade were to happen, that’s not a destination that we’re interested in pursuing.”

Let’s assume this report is accurate. Given that most blue chip veterans don’t want to play in Boston, we have no other choice but to ride the youth movement and build team pride from within. This begs at least two questions. What to do with Pierce and why is Rivers still coaching for us?

HEY BOSTON, DOTN WORRY ABOUT AL, YOU CAN KEEP HIM. KG DOES NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR YOU..
so, now everyone that wanted to Keep AL, and hope PP does want to jet town. Nice trying to do business with ya

I think it’s obvious KG wants to go to Phoenix (Why he wouldn’t want to go to Boston I have no idea, what with it being freezing cold in the winter and having it be a baseball town year round).
We should turn our attention back to Marion/Lewis if this report is accurate. And best of all: NOT trade Jefferson.
Just because Garnett does not want to play for us doesnt mean we still wont be involved with the trade..
Remember the Suns?
Boston was never a viable destination for KG.. because he knows he cant win here.
Looks like the best we can hope for is marion.
otherwise we can sit and watch our team win 30 this year, (while we trade PP at the trade deadline), we can watch us win 37 next year (while we sit here and get upset because AL is averaging 18 and 10 and plays in around 60 games due to injury, while KG is still a 20 10 guy who plays in 82 games) and in 2011 we can maybe make it to the playoffs..
sounds good to me

Now what to do with Theo’s expiring contract? That is the killer question. Do you make a move with it and get something back even if it is a role player?
Strangely enough, I think a lot of what the Celtics do depends on Kendrick Perkins. If he is 40% better being healthy vs. if he isn’t much better than last season, the Celtics should have different strategies. Other thoughts?

ouch, no matter how you feel about trading Al, having KG say he doesn’t want to play for Boston (I presume because of how the team’s constructed) has to hurt somewhat.
Reminds me of when the Bulls tried to get TMac and Grant Hill in free agency, were turned down, and then tried Glen Rice and were turned down and had to settle for Ron Mercer. ugh.

Whew, way to go KG, I owe you for this! I think at this point it’s pretty clear that we just aren’t going to attract any quality free agents at the moment. Which isn’t altogether shocking considering who would want to go to a team with the 2nd worst record in the league (okay maybe Joe Johnson but no one who’s serious about winning). I think it’s time to put the priority towards moving Pierce before his extension kicks in and we can’t find a taker for his 20mil a year salary.
I never thought it would feel so good to root for a team that is “not a destination that we’re interested in pursuing.” I’m glad someone was willing to save Grousbeck and Ainge from their own stupidity.
Now maybe they can turn their attention to what they should have been focused on all along: drafting the best player, turning Pierce into younger assets and negotiating extensions with Jefferson and West.
WEEI flashboy Pete just said that Garnett said today that he would opt-out if traded to the Celts.

Anthony…best post I’ve seen yet.
And Hoops, you stole my name and I don’t mind after seeing your thoughts posted on here.
Ainge getting talent and assets like he said he would put us in a great place and we should be able to get a great player with Theo’s contract (not a bad trade getting it now was it?) and the #5 will get us a player or a very solid player (Brewer or Wright).
Year 5 in the 5 year plan looks great.
Gomes vs Walker debate? Walkoff for Gomes…
