6 for 5
Celtics.com has a brief update on the workouts that began in earnest today. Of note was the fact that Ainge has narrowed his list of players they are considering down to 6 players.
Ainge said he's focusing on six players for the #5 pick, and while he didn't provide an official list of names, Thornton and Brewer are likely two of the six given that they will stay for two days in Boston.
Steve Bulpett names the rest of the list:
The two [Brewer and Thronton] are among six prospects the Celtics have currently identified as possibilities at 5. Brandan Wright, Jeff Green, Yi Jianlian and Al Horford are the others.

There will be more top players in for workouts than the 6 listed. Let’s put it this way: after tomorrow, Cs will have worked out Yi, Brewer and Thornton. Does anyone really think the Cs will only work out three more top players (Green, Horford, B. Wright) in the 20 days between June 8th and June 28th?
If we draft Noah, fans will have to file into games two-at-a-time, boy/girl.

Im not sure I get your comment, Real Large James. Please elaborate.
Knowing Ainge (or not, rather) I’m sure he will pick Noah. No need to workout Noah. The Brain Doctor has already given him his blessing.

Hey Brick, you will love this.
The following is a quote from Ainge, right off the Celtics website:
“Our staff has seen Yi numerous times over the last three years. [Probably] a dozen times, on the National Team, on the Tigers,” said Ainge, who didn’t want to compare Yi to any current players, but did allow that he reminded him somewhat of last year’s first pick, Andrea Bargnani. “He’s on the of the six guys we’re considering with the sixth pick.”
Yes, Ainge is sure to screw this up. He doesnt even know at which position he is picking.

NEST just talked about the Brewer/thornton work out from today. Dickerson said they both looked good. Said one of the people in Waltham said that Thornton is the second best offensive player in this draft. He said that Ainge said Thornton could be a dominate offensive player and Brewer could be a complimantory offensive player but said this team needs defense. He then said he thinks Brewer is the guy they will pick. He said Thornton didn’t fit in with the team (as a player).
Sports Tonight said that Noah and B Wright are coming in for a workout on Monday. That makes 7 who are on the list and the target of workouts. So does that mean that one of the guys working out for a later pick in case of a trade? They also said that Thornton doesn’t fit with the team and they don’t see Danny taking him. They said that Thornton may be the second best offensive player and that Brewer could come in and help right away defensively.

I think it means as of now, they like 6 guys. Workouts might change this in the case of Conley or Noah…

folks, don’t foget that teams will bring in guys to work out as favors to agents all the time – usually it is the lower guys, but perhaps Noah’s agent doesn’t want it to look like Noah isn’t working out for top teams, that looks bad – if that agent also represents someone like Al Jefferson (for example) then it wouldn’t hurt to help that agent out a bit
don’t know if that’s the case, but something to consider
furball — I hope you’re right. Brewer is the guy I have been hoping for. The guy can play D, he is ok being the third option on a team (after pierce and Jefferson), seems like a good kid that can do it all on the court. Plus it makes green expendable. I just don’t think green will ever get. I think he is destined to be a guy coming off the bench to shoot the three but his value is currently as high as it will ever be. Green, Theo, Gomes and a future pick should be able to get us a quality vet to add to the mix.

Notably absent from the work-out list was Hawes. Should Ainge trade down as part of a draft day move, he should cover all his bases.
I still don’t know how Brewer excells at defense with a relatively short reach.
