“On judging rookies and other players”. A nice article but missed the opportunity to discuss a player’s knowledge of basketball FUNDAMENTALS and how that knowledge could impact the speed at which a player develops an NBA game.
Case in point, Gerald Green’s lack of a high basketball IQ seems to keep his game development in low gear. What is especially disconcerting is that without this knowledge we may never see the player that he could have become. He may indeed wash-out by his 3rd year…despite freakish athleticism.
In comparing Pruit to Glen Davis I see two players with different levels of BBIQ. If Davis were to score an 80% for his knowledge of basketball fundamentals, Gabe would top out at 55% and Gerald Green (despite two years in the NBA) at 25%. Thus despite having the best athleticism, Gerald will still take much longer to reach his potential.
I graded Brandon Wallace at 70% because he is expected to know two positions very well (the “5” and the "3") whereas most players need to know only one position. By contrast, I graded Gomes at 85-90. Ray Allen graded 98 whereas Pierce topped out at 91%.
