Forget Darko

Well, that rumor didn't last long.  Darko is signing with the Griz.  Chad Ford reports:

Free-agent center Darko Milicic agreed in principle to a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, the player's agent Marc Cornstein told ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford.

Cornstein refused to disclose the amount of the deal, but the starting salary is believed to be for substantially more than the $5.3 million mid-level exception.

Darko might live up to that contract. No chance for RLewis to do that.

Darko wasn’t the answer here in Boston….on to better things

by Ancient Red on Jul 11, 2007 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

We need a big guy who can shoot from the high post off Al’s low post and block shots. That is Darko, he would have been just right for the full MLE.

by LarryLegend33 on Jul 11, 2007 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

Not that I had my heart set on Darko or anything, but I feel like a mediocre crop of free agents are dropping like flies.
So, um, OK. No free agents for us, then? No MLE, then?
Fine. Please tell me we’re going to swing a trade using Theo’s expiring deal. Please.
I said right after the draft that Ainge’s trade for Allen is a mistake UNLESS he signs an MLE and trades Theo for something real.
This summer is looking glummer.

darko and pau both live in the high post, i don’t get the reasoning. maybe they are gearing up to move pau and his contract for… ratliff green and sota’s pick?

Darko might have helped but Celts in no position financially to sign him. Darko and GG both are still unkowns on the court.

Darko promises to bring back the proud winning tradition of the Memphis Grizzlies. Oh wait.

by orrzor on Jul 11, 2007 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Smart move by the Grizz and Darko. The short contract pretty much removes the risk, at the least it really reduces any risk on either side.

I really think he would have fit in here very well.

Look, it needs to be KG if this banner is going to happen, even if it cost Big Al. Bringing in Ray Allen and trying to get spare parts won’t work. I’m getting really dang close to pulling the plug on Gerald Green anyway. The boy should be tearing it up in the summer league- potential, potential, potential.

Danny needs to pull the trigger and give up Big Al, a pick and Gerald.

We need: Pierce, Allen, KG, and a couple of spare parts and we are favorites along with the Spurs to reach the NBA finals.

Pierce, Allen and anybody else as the 3rd amigo (except KG) won’t get it done.

Pull that trigger and get us 2 out of the next 4 championship banners.

by docextension on Jul 12, 2007 1:18 AM EDT reply actions

KG is 31 and McHale is bright enough to know that if he doesn’t do anything soon, like Ainge with Pierce he is going to see the market decline. Like Ainge, he knows KG can’t get it done with the cast of characters on the team, especially in the West.

We aren’t going to get KG for a bargain, teams like the Lakers, Bulls, etc will go strong for him too and will have as good as package as we can put together without Big Al in the trade.

With KG/Pierce/Allen you are probably looking at 55W or a shade more, plus a top seed going into the playoffs and favorites over the likes of the Heat, Bulls, Pistons, Cavs and Raptors.

The East has never been weaker. It is time to go for the gold and KG can get this tired franschice to the promised land and #17.

by docextension on Jul 12, 2007 1:25 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with the heading- forget Darko and anything else that doesn’t have the initials of KG in it.

At this time last year we would have been falling over ourselves with the steal of all time if we did Al, Green and a #1 draft pick for KG. Especially if we had a 2nd all star in Allen (instead of Wally) on the team.

Well now you have the perfect storm all lined up- go Danny, visit McHale, make this happen. I want to cheer for Celt Ws, not Ls so we get more ping pong balls.

by docextension on Jul 12, 2007 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

Perhaps, Darko read Brickowski write about Mike Conley in this blog and decided to play with him ;)

The Griz are definate sleepers next year..

by havlicekstoletheball on Jul 12, 2007 4:09 AM EDT reply actions

So much for the brief optimism that the Celtic’s were finally getting something done. So far we’ve been sold the moon in unmet promises for improvement with only Brandon Wallace to appease our lust for another “difference-maker”…

Still, Brandon had a good game against China…active hands and great “timing” on blocks (even the refs were fooled). He passes well and like Rondo, perhaps over-passes especially when he’s in the paint and has daylight.

by moskqq on Jul 12, 2007 4:42 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t agree that the arrival of Darko means the exit of Gasol. Darko was brought in to complement Gasol, not to replace him. Together their combined size represents an impressive defensive potential in the paint.

by moskqq on Jul 12, 2007 5:00 AM EDT reply actions

I am against any trade where we have to give up Jefferson. With that out of the way, what is going on with the Celtics??? Last night I was giving thought to all the rumors regarding free agents and I realized, their is hardly an utter of a players name from Celtics brass. What the heck are they doing? Sometimes I think its paralysis from analysis. Other times, I agree with SportGuy and they need to have a VP of Common Sense. And even other times, I think that DA has a plan he’s just trying to keep it quiet. That last one I’m really beginning to doubt.

Its almost like he/they are frozen and don’t want to say anything or give any hints as to what they are thinking and that has me really concerned. Do they actually know who they want to get? If so, why aren’t we hearing about from, not only the boston papers, but from the players existing locations papers?

This all comes to head from hearing that Darko is going to sign with the Grizz, just after we get an audio blub that the Celtics have interest in him. No kidding, the Celtics have interest in practically everyone. That’s DA’s stance, he will also discuss players, he’s said time and time again. A 3 year contract for less than 25 million for a young, still talented, big who fills one of the biggest needs on the team and thats all the info we get? Whats that all about? That signing is the epitome of low risk/high reward in today’s NBA and we couldn’t match that? we couldn’t sweeten the offer a bit? We couldn’t sell him on the chance to work with C.Ray who has proven to improve bigs (helping him to gain a greater salary when the 3yr contract expires)?

This really is pissing me off, and I haven’t gotten to this point with the team in a long while. I really want to hear what the brass is planning on doing, who they are speaking to, what they are planning to offer, what they have to offer, and why the fans are being kept in the dark about this stuff. Before anyone says, its the way they do business, ask yourself this. If the Celtics were actually targeting or actively involved in getting someone, wouldn’t Player X’s agent be dropping team names to try to gain some extra leverage?

And if its about money, fricken open up the purse and pay someone. I’m tired of splitting the MLE to 2-3 minor players so we can lock them up for a 2-3 years. Realistically, they are not the players we need at this point. Quit being a buzz kill and just use the entire MLE on a player that fits and is seriously needed. Out of any free agent out there, Darko was the one guy that fit the majority of team needs (mobile big, defense, rebounding), and he hasn’t had any knee/ankle surgeries, something that apparently is a pre-requiste to becoming a Celtic.

And please don’t automatically pull the reflex muscle and bring up his season stats. Look at what he did in the playoffs, and tell me that that’s not something he can build upon. The kid has skills and he’s shown in it at times. More importantly, he’s shown in at the most important time. Its not his fault that the rest of the team took their vacation early while they were in the playoffs.

At this point, it comes done to one thing. Who is not doing their job??? Celtics Mgmt or Sports reporters?

Sorry for the long post, but Im feeling sick from thinking about this and would really just like some answers.

by cos on Jul 12, 2007 5:09 AM EDT reply actions

another one bites the dust. darko would have helped. the also ran celtics also ran.

by nazzbo on Jul 12, 2007 6:47 AM EDT reply actions

Cos, nice post, but how would the Celtics have beat 3 years, $25M? The most they could offer for 3 years was ~$16M.

by DannyAinge44 on Jul 12, 2007 6:58 AM EDT reply actions

Why don’t we pursue Varejao now? Wouldn’t he serve as the perfect compliment to Perk?

by APeretore on Jul 12, 2007 7:17 AM EDT reply actions

3 years, 25 million? That’s a really good pickup for the Grizz, IMO. Darko is both a complement for Gasol if he stays, and a replacement if he goes. But they’re probably going to see if they work together first – so they won’t be trading Pau this offseason. Guess he needs to get used to Southern living.

by Cullain on Jul 12, 2007 9:31 AM EDT reply actions

Im with docextension (although I still cant believe that bum got an extension). Its KG or bust now. None of the FA bigmen are going to be big difference makers, and many of the guys being brought up on this board are backups. One of the last things I would want to do is give up Al, but Ainge and the Celtics sent a message that they are going for it now on draft night. For that to really happen they need to do everything possible to get KG to Boston (and sign him an extension).

by ucn33 on Jul 12, 2007 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

The interesting thing here, is that the pick that Detroit used on Darko came from Memphis/Vancouver in a trade that the Grizzlies got…………….Otis Smith.

by dsbeave on Jul 12, 2007 10:09 AM EDT reply actions

Stop with the KG talk. Pao is a better fit and won’t cost nearly as much.

by Stuck in Philly on Jul 12, 2007 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

Pao is not a better fit and would not do anything to help this teams defense.

by ucn33 on Jul 12, 2007 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

nazzbo,
That’s a great last line. It sums up exactly how I feel right now: “also ran celtics also ran.”

Seems the addition of RA isn’t making FAs clamor to come to Boston in the fall.

Imagine if Ainge really wanted to draft Conley and had targeted Darko in free agency, but Chris Wallace, who switched from the Cs to the Grizz weeks before the draft, is essentially foiling his attempts.

by Cousin It on Jul 12, 2007 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

I really wanted Darko. Now if Perkins still has a foot problem and Ratliff can play. Our ONLY center is Al Jefferson. This doesn’t look good and I think is worse than no back-up point.

by MR.BOMB on Jul 12, 2007 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Darko wasn’t the answer. He’s a roleplayer, possibly a very good one. But he would have been another young guy who might never reach his potential.

Now if Gasol becomes available, as the grizzlies’ payroll grows higher than ownership would like… that would be nice.

by Mr October on Jul 12, 2007 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

Pao is not a strong one on one defender but wouldn’t hurt the team D. He would also come much cheaper and he could play the high post on O which would allow Jefferson to stay at the 4. Look at the history of big men in this league and the minuntes they play. KG will start to fade fast, is making to much money to fill out the rest of the roster and would cost us 10 years of Jefferson putting up 20 and 10.

by Stuck in Philly on Jul 12, 2007 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

How could we possibly get KG? With Wally gone, we don’t have enough salery to send back to Minny. It would take about 6 or 7 players. WE would have three all stars and nothing else.
