One follow up to my last comment: I’ve seen tons of trades proposed here using Gerald Green as a centerpiece. If the Cs have any hope of making that happen, they should bench the kid with a mystery flu right now. I think other GMs have seen the truth about him. He’s 21, not a kid by NBA standards, and shows no signs of getting it. If there is a team out there interested in him, and we could get something of value, I say do it now.
Okay, everyone can attack me now … :)
Thank God, the Celtic didn’t go crazy and get Darko for some rediculous fortune. Now if they can only stay clear of Kirelenko and his whining and six ppg, they can at least avoid having an big white eastern European stiff making untold millions on the roster.
I don’t pay attention the summer leagues when players play well, so I don’t when they play poorly either. You never know what is going on with Green. That said, this is Green’s make or break year. He is the textbook example of why it is dumb to go pro right out of high school unless you are going to be a top three pick. The problem is that anything but the top four or five picks get chump change in the NBA. This is not the NFL where some big black stiff you have never heard of can go number one to Houston and get more gaurenteed money than Tom Brady. The big money in the NBA is in the second contracts not the first ones. Green comes out and gets the early money, but two years later he is no longer a rookie but just another young vet playing for his life in the NBA. If he doesn’t produce this year, he is looking at getting lousy money on his second contract. Even if he turns it around and in say his fourth or fifth year finally gets it, he will never make back the lost money on that second contract. Had Green had any sense, he would have gone to college for two or three years. Had he done that, he would have been a top five pick last year and still have two more years to get better before he got his second contract. As it is, he better get good real quick or he is going to loose a lot of money. Bottom-line is don’t go to the NBA unless you are a top three pick or are ready to play.

Cousin It,
I’m with you on Gerald. Why did Ainge instruct this kid to play summer league? He’s killing his trade value with every game. Gerald was the natural pairing with Theo’s expiring contract to acquire a decent vet C or PG.
These games do nothing to help him or the team. Yes, his defense looks a little better. But look who he’s playing against! His strongest attribute is offense, yet his offense has not looked good in these games. Yes, it’s only summer league – but that’s the point: why did we bother to suit him up?

Doc’s mantra has been that all any of these guys need to show is defense, rebounding and good ball movement because Pierce, Jesus & Big Al are going to take care of the offense. The only guy that we could be showcasing in this Summer League is Gerald. Maybe Danny forgot to tell Doc that exception to the rule, or maybe Danny’s going to hold Gerald right now.
Really good game for Powe last night — put up great numbers without having any plays run for him, just second-chances, put-backs, etc. And played good defense on Yi. He’s less effective against some of the bigger, stronger teams — Spurs, Knicks — but against many teams, I can see us playing Al at the 5 and Powe complementing him well at the 4 for stretches during games.
Comparing two SL underperformers like Yi and GG was interesting. In Yi’s case he KNEW what to do but was humbled by the speed and strength needed to compete against athletically superior players.
In GG case he had comparable speed and strength to favorably compete but not the knowledge to direct his play.
Since both players UNDERPERFORMED, who in your opinion will become the better player in 3 years?

MattD – EVERYONE is weaker against the stronger teams so that isn’t a fair comparison. No one outplays Duncan or Shaq, so when you have an undersized big who steps it up against everyone else you hang on. Where are those rediculous posters now saying Powe doesn’t belong in the NBA?!
Finally a very good game from Rondo.
