Hollinger States Obvious
Hollinger counts the Celtics as one of the teams that helped themselves this offseason. (ESPN Insider - free preview)
added Ray Allen; lost Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West)
Long-term, I have grave doubts about whether this was the right move for Boston; as I've mentioned before, unless they're about to use Gerald Green and Theo Ratliff's expiring contract as bait to bring in another star, I hardly see the point of acquiring Allen.
But in the short-term, Allen will be a big upgrade on the Wally/West combo that manned a lot of the shooting guard minutes for Boston last season, and that should be enough to pull the C's out of the cellar in the Atlantic.

Short term? No brainer, we improved. Long term? No telling until that time comes. If we keep the pick then what? What does Paul do? How does that impact Doc’s status? And a list of other questions.
The fact of the matter is that we don’t know what the outcome is going to be. Keeping the pick would present a new series of “if’s.” As it stands, IF Al, Perk, Green, Tony, and Rondo reach their potential, as well as Gomes, Pruitt and others, then this team will be solid for years.
everytime there is a “free insider” article it is full of info everyone already knows. After reading Hollinger’s article I must have insider I am missing out on so much.

it seems unwise to judge the Ray Allen trade in a “this season versus last season” sense. Last season we were tanking. Pierce was injured. Wally was injured. Jefferson didn’t play a lot and then suddenly was playing like an all-star.
If RA, PP and AJ stay healthy, then the 07/08 team cannot help but be better than the 2nd worst team in the NBA. The real question is, does this team improve substantially over a theoretical 2006/2007 team that would have featured a healthy Wally and Pierce and AJ playing major minutes all season? That team was probably on track for 35-37 wins. Adding Ray Allen gives you the same indifferent wing defense as Wally but with a few more points a game. AJ playing full-time all season gives you a valid inside presence and consistent rebounding, but also a bad defender who will now be trying to avoid foul-ing as well.
Essentially, these moves have made the team marginally better, maybe into the 37-40 win zone. The real key is going to be Rondo. The common theme of losing Celtic teams vs. winning Celtics teams over the past ten years have been defense and point guard play. We already know this team will play no defense. So if the PG position continues to flounder, you really cannot expect any significant improvement this season.
I firmly believe that Rondo is not a starting point guard as he cannot shoot and is a sub-par playmaker. Furthermore, with two big-time ball-hog types in Pierce and Ray Allen, it is incumbent for a winning Celtics team to have a confident, team leader type at the PG position, making sure everyone gets their touches and that the offense does not get bogged down in Pierce vs. The World.
So yeah, the team will be better. But only a little better than they would have been anyway.

who even knows if west was going to re-sign with us. we got rid of sczoolander and we don’t need anymore projects. i love when people cry about ray allens ankles like he wasn’t scoring 26ppg before the surgery. he cleaned them up when it was obvious the sonics weren’t going anywhere last season. it’s not like he’s got wally sczerbiaks ankles or anything….
Ray Allen for West and Wally is a good deal. Put Jeff Green in there and it’s not such a good deal.

Of course Hollinger is stating the obvious, what else is there to say? It’s July. Nothing is going on in basketball. But a few lunatics(meaning, well, us) want to read about basketball anyway.
