Can We Still Get Yi?
In case you missed it earlier, Yi's reps are trying to get him out of Milwuakee.
He'll be playing with the Chinese National Team (which was arranged before the draft) so he can audition for other teams interested in trading for him without ever actually wearing a Bucks uniform.
Now that Ainge passed on him in favor of a trade, will he make an attempt to get him? Would he give up Gerald Green for him? Would he take back a contract like Dan Gadzuric (who would also fill a need at center)? Perhaps a better question is what kinds of offers are the Bucks getting? You know Nellie is probably making phone calls from Golden St.

If you are going to make a mistake, make a big one. I would rather chance it with a seven foot Yi, than with a 6’8" Green. What the hell, I would do it. You could really get Yi on the cheap. The guy can just play in China another year and go back into the draft next year. He has all of the leverage, Milwaukee has none. I think Danny could really take a shot. Get a good young player and Allen in the same year.

Salary cap wise, I am not sure how a deal for Yi would work. His draft rights don’t count as salary until he is signed correct? The problem I see with going after Yi, is that I would think Milwaukee would want something like Green and a future 1st round pick, and you can’t trade a 1st rounder until you know if you are going to go after KG or another big name veteran that would require Ratliff a future 1st rounder, because of the rule that you can’t trade consecutive 1st round picks.
From a pure roster point of view, I think Yi probably would be a better fit as the back up SF occasional PF, then Green at SF/SG. Of course that all depends on what Gerald has been doing this summer, if he has been working hard this off-season and it starts to click for him on the court he could be scary good with his tools.
Byrdman,
Maybe I am mistaking the NBA and the NFL. I know in the NFL you can wait a year and you are just put back into the draft. Perhaps, it works differently in the NBA. Either way, Yi, still has the leverage. He can tell the Bucks to pound sand and they face the prospect of getting nothing from their draft pick. I would just offer next year’s number one straight up. Let them stew on it for a while and get desparate and then deal him.

Its an interesting idea..only thing is I agree with Max Smart before me, I believe some of these other teams will be in a position to offer more than the Celtics could…I also dont think you want to use any of the “chips” you have to make a trade for Yi that you could maybe use to get another established vet in here

Part of drafting well (and trading well) has to do with “Lady Luck”. It is not inconceivable that the Celtics BACK INTO this Yi acquisition through means not thought possible at draft time. It could be that this trade is expanded to include other players that would better balance our roster.

Either way, Yi, still has the leverage
If Yi is still under contract with his club in Guangdong the Bucks hold his rights indefinitely. If not, then yes he can play for the Chinese National team for a year and reenter the draft in 2008. Very different scenarios.
Either way, Celtics should stay out of it. Anybody remember the Steve Francis trade that managed to work out badly for both franchises? Anybody see Jianlian’s no show against the US under-19 squad? It makes little to no sense to add a three-year project, locker-room headache to a team building to win now.

I’m sure teams will be watching the Summer League games with interest, and we’ll be in a better position to know what a fair offer would be after seeing him in action.
That said, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, we really seem to be in “win now” mode, and I don’t think trading for Yi helps us in that regard.
I’d love for DA to make a pitch for Yi. Anytime you can acquire an athletic and skilled 7 footer you have to go for it. I hope DA makes a concerted effort to rectify his mistake and bring him on board.

The only way Boston gets Yi is in a three-way. Green and a pick isn’t enough and Al is too much, so the deal woul dhave to involve sending Ratliff’s expiring to someone and having that team send assets to Milwaukee.
But I agree with Big T. If Danny had wanted Yi he would have picked him. You need your assets right now to buy interior defense and help at the one spot, which Yi doesn’t help you with.

1. Milwaukee has leverage since other teams want Yi. Golden State’s presence in the deal makes it highly unlikely that they will have take anything other than value.
2. It doesn’t need to be a three way deal. If the Celtics get Jianlin, I believe us taking Bobby Simmons (not Dan Gadzuric) WILL BE A REQUIREMENT. Since Milwaukee has a couple of FA’s (Skinner, Boykins) that can be used in a S/T, they can easily balance salaries
3. Green is a good start in that deal, but it will need more. Gomes? Minnesota’s first round pick?
I believe it was ESPN (can’t recall) reporting yesterday that if Yi doesn’t play professional (National Team doesn’t count) for one year anywhere (including with the Bucks), then the Bucks lose his rights.

It will never get to that Luke. If he tries to pull a Danny Ferry, Milwaukee will simply trade him to Golden State for Brandan Wright and Monta Ellis. The only way we become feasible in the deal is if we take back Bobby Simmons contract. While Simmons contract is bad, it is for only three years AND still provides us with the flexibility when Allen’s contract ends.
I’d be very open to a Ratliff, Green, and Gomes for Simmons, Jianlin, and Brian Skinner (S/T – 1 year deal to compensate for salaries). Then bring in Brevin Knight or Chucky Atkins on a 2 year contract (preferably a 1 year one).
C – Jianlin, Perkins, Skinner
PF – Jefferson, Jianlin, Davis, Scalabrine
SF – Pierce, Simmons, Powe
SG – R Allen, T Allen, Ray
PG – Rondo, Knight, Pruitt
What if Yi (because of his particular contract situation with his chinese team) has a secret deal with Boston or Golden State that he refuse to sign with whoever team pick him and refuse a trade to any other team? it would be against nba rules? (for us it would be like having 2 lottery picks ;D )

I doubt there is a “secret deal”. The ramifications of that would be flat out bad. That said, I have no doubt his handlers want him in Golden State, Los Angeles, Boston, or New York. Also, if he exerts pressure, he is likely to make enough money from being in those cities where it might be worth the negative press.
Still gotta believe Golden State is the favorite. They can offer Wright AND Monta Ellis OR Wright AND the ability to take on Simmons contract in a separate deal because of the trade exception from the Richardson deal. If the add all three, IMO, it is over. I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Is Boston’s Chinese population large enough to satisfy the Chinese government? Pass on this guy, too much off-the-court baggage.

Why do you people tend to think the young guys we don’t have are better than the ones we do have? Gerald Green is 2 years out of high school, he can shoot from 3 pt land and won the slam dunk contest. Yes, he’s pretty bad at defense right now but if that isn’t potential, what is? Yi could be a bust. I wouldn’t trade Gerald straight up for him.
If we could get him for cheap, why not go for it? That would mean we got Ray Allen for next to nothing, right – since we would have taken Yi with our pick. But I don’t see this happening. Golden State could always just offer Brandon Wright straight up – which I honestly think makes a lot of sense, for both teams.

I don’t like it. GG still has outstanding potential, and is a project we’ve already got two years into. It takes the high school kids much longer to develop than college kids. Yi is an unknown who isn’t strong and was easily backed down by various and sundry nba wannabes in his only workout.
I’m high on getting AK47, who brings a shot-blocking veteran presence to a club the NEEDS to win NOW based to the ray ray trade. I’d use GG as a chip for that move. Definitely NOT Yi.
