KG Wants $125 Million
Eric Weiss from DraftExpress reports:
Multiple sources close to the situation told DraftExpress Sunday that the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves have come to terms on a trade exchanging Kevin Garnett for a package including Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, and Theo Ratliff. The exact details of the trade aren’t known at this point, but it is believed that the deal will be completed shortly with similar parameters.
This deal has been rumored for most of the summer, but according to sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the main hold up had been the negotiation of a contract extension for Garnett. According to this source, Garnett’s camp is asking for a 5 year extension worth 125 million dollars. Whether or not the two parties have altered the initial proposal or agreed to it is not known, but apparently some accord has been reached. Garnett has an opt-clause in his contract for next season that he has essentially been using as leverage to get traded and secure his financial future with the team that acquires his services.

yea i just saw this, WOW. Well we are going to be over the cap either way ,so if WYC is willing to give this to him i guess i’ll go with it, but hes also got to be willing to use the mle and vet minimum or else this deal makes no sense cause we will be way to thin on our bench. I would rather see something like a 4 year 80 mil extension, but hey if wyc wants to pay that then thats up to him. SAY HELLO TO SOME PRICEY TICKETS for celts games
For anyone opposed to this trade, look at the bright side. Four years from now you’ll be all goosed up over pingpong balls.

The revenue opportunities should soften that contract demand by quite abit i would imagine..

Apparently the “NEW” vision has legs and a much fuller committment than the “last” vision which featured mixed priorities about saving money or improving talent (i.e., trading away consecutive lottery picks).
Instead of “secondary” player acquisitions like Scal, Dickau etc. we revert to the Red Auerback style of obtaining key impact players in the twilight of their careers.
GG was going to take years to develop his game and our future success will depend largely upon the speed of development of our BENCH! With the possible exception of Gabe Pruit (who looked lost at the point in SL) we’ll need Glenn Davis and Brandon Wallace to fast-forward their careers. Leon Powe should also be better but lacks a midrange game. Rondo and Gomes should be key players too.
We still need a back-up PG and if Jose Barea can’t be pried away by trade perhaps Navarro will suffice (the Celtic’s are among 8 teams vying for his services). The rumored 4 for 1 trade should create roster spots for additional “tinkering” involving our MLE etc.

While we still lack help at the 1 and 5 positions, Brandon Wallace has the versatility to play some minutes at the 5 as well as SF. Although a lightweight and undersized at the “5” he has had 4 years of college experience at that position and knows how to play smart.
It would appear that a back-up PG rmains our biggest need with additional concerns at the “5”.

I can’t remember Red Auerbach trading young rising stars with a Celtic heart.

Should this trade materialize as speculated recall that the 4 for 1 trade would leave roster spots open. It would seem that the Celtic’s had prior knowledge that this trade was going to happen and still they waived Allan Ray. IMO it was the right decision as Allan didn’t impress at the point and was undersized and ill-equipped to play SG.
Something NEW must have been added to management’s Kool Aid because they’re finally acting like a franchise with a purpose.
Before we get too excited (and there always is a "proviso") recall too that we have TWO assit. coaching vacancies and our highest priority (next to roster balance) is to secure a well respected defensive-minded assit. coach. One wonders whether the candidate pool of assit. coaches will expand now that KG has been added to the mix?
Will the Celtic’s add the necessary pieces for a legitimate run at #17?

At this point all I am hoping for is 3 things:
- The Celts do not part w/ Rondo (as Fox is reporting)
- The Celts hold to a few of the draft picks they have
- They are left with some sort of flexability to get a back up point and big man.

This is a terrible move, of course. Next year they will be paying over 60 million for three players.
This is somewhat better than Denver’s acquisition of Iverson, since Garnett (assuming he stays healthy) is a far better player. But the concept is the same, and the result is likely to the same.
Assuming that Rondo is not in the deal, this makes the Celtics the rough equivalent of the Garnett-Cassell-Sprewell team that made it to the WC finals in 2003-2004. But that Wolves team had a deeper and more veteran bench, with players like Hasell, Hoiberg, Ervin Johnson, Gary Trent, Darrick Martin and (of course) Szczerbiak, who was hurt most of the year but came back in time for the playoffs. It also had a younger Kevin Garnett.
This move guarantees that the Celtics will have more national TV appearances, but it won’t result in a championship— not even an EC championship.
C’s better hang on to that Mini #1 —they’ll need it to rebuild after this run is over!

Dannt has struck “paydirt” but for the MAGIC to last he needs a few more pieces to complete the puzzle. Should he be able to add those pieces (previously discussed) we will not only win the Eastern Conference, we’re in line for #17.
I could care less what happens in 3-5 years if we can regain the magic of 20 years ago. Even with Jefferson we had no realistic chance at winning the Eastern Conference…let alone a chance at #17.
Sure the expedient approach is a risk but timid GM’s seldom see success. Recall the risks that Red Auerback took before building a dynasty!
I do believe that MORE shoes need to drop before we celebrate, because without additional moves, we’re still an “also-ran” franchise.

Garnett is looking to “secure his financial future” - what happened to the first $100 Million already earned?

This is a good deal, if Rondo is not involved.
1. Al can be great. But Garnett IS. And usually the great ones announce themselves right away, and it took Al 3 seasons. There are enough red flags that him as a slam dunk superstar for ever and ever is not sealed.
2. This is what we wanted. A 3 year run where we could get to the Finals. Pierce and Ray are lined up to come off the books in 3 years. You extend Garnett 4 years, it’s not so bad. There is not any short term cap flexibility, but at least we’ll have a legit shot over the time we are in cap prison.
3. The veterans minimum exception suddenly becomes valuable. Three all stars, given how NBA teams form these days, means we can get another solid veteran cheap because we have the star power to give them a shot at the Finals.
This is salary cap nba. Give yourself a chance to make a run and then raze it when that time is over. Good for the Celtics if they do this and only have to part with one first rounder.
This is a terrible move, trading for the right to pay a guy $25MM. 2 years later, do you think Miami is still giddy. They won a championship, and look at them now.If anything happens to any of these 3, forget an NBA Championship. I would not be surprised to see Celtics win one with these 3, but margin of error will be small, and the downsound ugly. I reallty think we can compete with the talenty Jefferson brings.
But its really not about that. Its about Doc and Danny
Is Miami giddy? They are held hostage until Shaq retires, yes. BUT they won a title out of it, and that is why they play. It’s a fine balance. This team was not going to win a title with Pierce, Al and stuff, certainly not in the next 3 years. Is this a mortgage of the future? No, it is defining the future. This is our 3 year plan. Could it not work out. Yes, but with Allen and Pierce clearing off the books in 3 years, the downside is not really that bad. Take a run at the title, doesn’t work out, you hit the reset button.
No way Rondo gets traded. In a few years maybe we’ll look back at this in a few years when Al and GG are both All-stars and bang our heads into the wall but the Danny’s plan from the start was to acquire young talent and trade it for big time names to stick next to Pierce. It’s now or never, you have to do this trade.
