Done Deal
A league source just confirmed that the Celtics and Timberwolves have finalized a deal that will bring Kevin Garnett to Boston in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and two first round draft picks. (Typo leaving out Gerald Green has been fixed)
Garnett is expected to arrive in Boston this afternoon for a physical.
Garnett has agreed to a three-year extension with the Celtics beyond the two remaining on his contract, guaranteeing that he will be a Celtic for the next five years.
One reason for prolonged negotiations was the Celtics’ attempt to lessen the luxury tax hit this team will take next year, with Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen scheduled to earn a combined $54.4 million - the highest of any three-player combo in the NBA.
This will involve finding a way to lessen the impact of a 15 percent trade kicker in Garnett’s contract.

NO Gerald Green in this report. Either mistake or omission. Which?

Hah!…This is the first time ever that everyone is on the same page (or Papyrus!)…I usually can’t even do two paragraphs without contradicting my very self…
Further research is necessitated!

I was uncomfortable with both Green and Gomes going. If it is one of the two I feel better.

Jeff pointed out on the other thread that the deal, if it included Green, left the Celtics short at the wing for the first time in years. The Celtics can give up Gomes easier than Green. Garnett is going to play 40 minutes a game at the 4 and 5. Gomes is best at the 4, but the Celtics already have Wallace, Davis and Powe to play there. He really doesn’t have that many minutes on the team. Green, for all of his faults, will get significant minutes backing up Pierce at the SF, both while Pierce is on the bench and while Pierce is playing the 2 backing up RA.

ESPN reporting as of 10 min. ago, deal is close and it included both Green and Gomes, but who knows for sure.

Are you crazy…If we’ve kept Gerald, we’ve done very well indeed…It breaks me heart a bit to lose Ryan, but having GiGi in the pack appeases my a bit!

Let’s hope hoopshype’s numbers are slightly off, right? That would be great.
Something to gnash our teeth about — if Minnesota is indeed willing to do this without Gerald — is that if we’d kept Allan Ray, we could have included his salary, and Minnesota could have just immediately declined his option. Of course, we don’t know if Minnesota would live without Gerald, but I’d hate to think that they would but couldn’t due us missing the CBA requirements by $50k.
I am on edge now, waiting to hear about free agents.
I had though Brevin Knight agreed in principle to sign with Denver? If not, they should sign him immediately. His poor shooting won’t matter with those 3 guys on the court, and any attitude he has will be taken care of by the Garnett staredown. If not him, then Darrell Armstrong. The guy is a sparkplug and is loved by his teammates everywhere he goes.
For the frontcourt, see if you can get Dikembe and Webber or PJ Brown on board for cheap. Last resort: Uncle Cliff Robinson. I did some time with Uncle Cliffie at UConn. The guy has a really unique, er, personality (he walks with his head in a cloud—not because he’s tall, either), but he could probably still give them 10-15 minutes of good defense.
DOH!!! I am still shaking with anticipation of watching this flippin team play!!!

In personel terms Jefferson, Gomes and Green future firsts is a lot to give up for 3 years of KG. If anything Telfair is the make weight bit of the deal. I will be surprised if Danny gave up the entire future of the franchise bar Rondo for 3 yrs of possible success.

Jackie MacMullan’s column lays one thing out pretty well. The Houston parallel is probably apropos, so it probably depends what you want. Ainge sells the future for now, maybe for the selfish objective of saving his job. But the team would have been a team on the rise with a decent chance for 45 – 50 wins and prospects that it would go up from there without sacrificing the future. Now we have 2 maybe 3 years, then what. We’ll be less than Houston in all likelihood although maybe in a relative sense in the Eastern Conference, we’ll be roughly what they are.
I’m trying to like it but the Garnett deal for what it is, since it is what is. Bill Simmons put out a far better piece than Jackie’s in support of why to like it and it helps me in my effort to get on board. But it’s not what I wanted the future to be like — a 10 to 12 year contention plan that would have swung into full gear by 2009 rather than a 2 or 3 year plan before becoming Houston east.

Well, I’ll say this much: the last three times the Celts were front page material for the national media was Red (RIP), Bassy’s legal issues, and the losing streak.
Say what you want about the cost for bringing him here, but at least people will care about this team for the right reasons.

MBURKE15 – The extension is a 3 year extension so will not cost them $120 million beyond the 2 on his contract. It still will be a big amount of cash that Brick somehow was wrong about… Did Wyc quietly sell the Celtics while we weren’t looking?! There is no way he would have spent money or gone into the luxury threshold in order to win?!
This will settle in everyone’s minds just like the Ray Allen trade did. Relax people. We got exactly what we asked for and now everyone is upset. An agressive move to try and return the Celtics to contenders. Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t, but you can’t say they sat on their hands.
It is funny how many people who were crying about not being relevant and how we were doomed for 10 more years of mediocrity are STILL crying about the fact we got two of the best players in the NBA (and one top 5 player).
We’re gonna win the NBA title and they’re STILL gonna be complaining! Amazing . . .
What team in this league has a 5 to 10 year plan? That’s absurd.
The NBA is THE toughest league to get better in. Danny’s plan was to pick young talent while shedding bad contracts, then be in a position to deal. The problem with
most GMs is that they bail out of the plan under pressure.
To think two years ago we would now have KG, PP and RA would have been laughable. Kudos Danny.
Just heard that Paul Pierce is being flown in for the Press Conference today.
Boy as hard as this is going back and forth yes, no, yes, no, yes, no, yes, no, yes on this trade, what it does is bring BACK SOME OF THE FEELINGS OF THE GLORY YEARS, whether we agree with this trade or not, this team is more relevant than anytime in the last 20 years.
Suffice to say, we had the same feelings around here when we heard Rick Pitino was going to be the coach before all his crap took place. However, this time I think it will be different.
I’m am willing to give this time and see what happens.
I’m sure “RED” is lighting up the cigar again and telling everyone that we are BACK.
We still have work to do, but the majority of the pieces are in tact.
The key pieces are in place, but Danny’s next 2-3 moves will be HUGE. We can’t win a championship with the current roster.
Danny’s got at least two free agent moves left: the veteran’s exception and the mid-level exception. We also need to be looking to overseas.
Among available free agents, Ime Udoka would be a nice addition, now that we’re out of wings and with TA’s health being dicey. He plays solid perimeter defense and can shoot the 3. The Spurs have been after him, which is high praise.
Also wondering if we could get a back-up PG for Scal and a future 2nd rounder? Atlanta probably doesn’t need both Lue and Anthony Johnson….

@ whoever mentioned tyrone lue
i remember doc RAVING about tyrone lue last season…he was saying something along the lines of him being one of the best team players he’s ever been around and a perfect locker room guy.
Honestly, I haven’t seen the guy play at all outside of the games he’s played against the celtics. i wonder if he would be a good choice for 15-20 minutes a night here?

I feel Danny’s next move will be signing C-Webb to play 15-20 min. max off the bench. I would like to pick up Andre Miller to share minutes with Rondo, but i don’t think we even have enough players on our roster to even make that work. I’m not sure about the status of our MLE, but if we can snag Knight and Webber with the full MLE, i believe we would be all set. We’ll see!!!! I’m still in denial that we have Acquired KG and Ray Ray within a few weeks. Wow….
At some point it would behoove Pierce to make the this is now KG’s team declaration just like Antoine did for him all those years ago. Pierce is now a 2nd banana, and while I have my doubts as to how well he’ll adjust to this role, he would do himself a huge favor by acknowledging this quickly and letting Garnett be the man from day one.

That’s just silly. While KG will probably end up taking a very large leadership role, this is Paul’s team. He’s been here the longest and is the established leader of the team. KG needs to be here and play here and wear the Green and White before he can be anointed anything.

Its like watching your kids leave go out in the world on their own. I was opposed to the deal basically on that idea, but from a pure BB sense its a great deal. This is the PHX philosophy. Thats why they traded Kurt Thomas and 2 1st’s for a 2nd. Its all about putting 3 all stars together and fillin in the gaps. I can’t see anybody in the east beating Boston unless they get some serious injury.
Also, building off what I just said, I think that expecting a guy in a new city to immediately become the leader would be unfair to him. I also think that bringing in two hungry leaders like KG and Ray will really help take off pressure from Paul.
I’m getting very excited to see the nightmare match-up issues that will ensue with these guys wreaking havoc on opposing defenses.

A toast! Here’s to being relevant again. Finally. When the Allen deal was done Ainge said “there are no excuses”. Now there are absolutely, positively no excuses. The only thing that might derail this locomotive is subpar coaching. Oops.
by Greg37 on Jul 31, 2007 3:35 PM EDT reply actions
given the allen trade this had to happen for that to make sense. My preference would have been to trade pierce for chrispaul 2 years ago and build that way but it’s hard to argue with the talent we have right now. I don’t get why we couldn’t have used scalabrine in this deal and at least saved gomes and possibly green or telfair- not becuase they’re so great but because we need guys at their position. we can cover scal’s position with powe and davis. Brevin knight seems to be the consensus at point guard. I like varejao but I assume he would be too expensive? I hate chris webber and really don’t want him on the team. pj brown is ready to retire but he may e the best we can get. we need a couple of vets to pull a miami heat deal and play for $1M. If GP has anything left he would be perfect.
I really think Danny is going to make more trades for backup players. Also will look at non drafted players they have in mind along with 1 free agent possibly. This will fill the backup PG, SF and Center positions. This might take until the season starts to put everyone in place. We have 11 players and I think they like to have 15 for practice and emergency health problems.
KG, Pierce, Allen, Rondo, Perk
Powe, Davis, Tony Allen, Pruitt, Scal, Wallace
I can hardly wait Ancient Red. We’re all too excited about the possibilities around here and need him back to whiz in our Kool-Aid.
Don’t know that I really am too concerned that Tommy isn’t happy about it. We all liked Big AL. If Tommy were a huge basketball IQ he would be in the front office and not giving out Tommy Points. He’s great at what he does for the most part but that doesn’t make him necessarily right.
The next person that mentions that Etan Thomas would be a great add for the C’s ought to be banned from the site for life. What a complete waste of a player! I wouldn’t trade Scal straight across for him.
Antonio Daniels should be a star in this league. Why did he never really pan out? Not a bad thought though.
I’m all excited about the trade, and anxious to start watching games. But I’ve been noting a few derogatory comments, here and there, directed at those that had opposed this deal. So for the record, let me state that I did oppose this trade, and still wish it hadn’t happened. The age-related injury risks just seem too great.
But, hey, the deal’s been done, and I’m hoping for the best along with everyone else. I admire the Celtics’ brass for taking a gutsy move, and without question, I’ll be just as miserable as everyone else if things go south. Go Celtics.
Kevin Garnett is one of the top five players in the league. Paul Pierce has been on one all-NBA 3rd team. I think it’s safe to say that this is now Kevin Garnett’s team.

awards for stats are nice but look at a-rod and bonds, there leading
their team s to below .500 varitek is looking for a 2nd ring
Paul Pierce never wanted to be The Man. He just wanted the rock when he felt like it. He deferred to Twan plenty. He wants to win, even if he never really learned how.
Stop drilling Brickowski in here. Stop calling out people PERIOD. Getting personal is just ridiculous. Same team, no matter how bitter, cynical or negative someone may seem.
Y’all may be tired of the supposed negativity espoused by some in here (me included), but what’s worse is taking personally comments about the management of this team and then getting personal with CELTICS FANS in here.
Well said Big Easy.
And to briefly abandon the spirit of your comments I’d like to note; these sheep are lucky Brickowski wastes his time posting here.
by George Meyer on Jul 31, 2007 7:51 PM EDT reply actions
Big_Easy – You’re taking the criticism all wrong here towards Brick. No one is attacking him personally. The attacks are on the spirit of negativity and his slamming of everyone who disagrees with him. There are many sincere comments on this board from posters that have altered my stance on specific players and styles of play, etc. Other than his sheep, most people on here feel that he is talking down to them and that isn’t what we need. A free flowing exchange of ideas is desired. Not someone on here trying to prove that they are smarter than the rest of us. No one is telling Brick that he is a loser, or that he’s stupid, or comments on his family. The criticism is about the posts and tone of the thoughts with a request to try not to be negative about everything all the time. I’m sure Brick is a nice guy and that he’d be great to have a beer with. I personally would just prefer he use some of that knowledge for good. No broken records. Nothing personal at all.
I don’t feel attacked LOL. I’m negative and proud of it, and it’s perfectly understandable why folks don’t want someone like me peeing on their Garnett love fest. I’m too old and have seen too much. I don’t believe in quick fixes.
Nothing against Garnett, who is a first ballot hall of famer. I question how much is left in the tank, for which the Celtics are paying 100 million dollars. His gaudy stats in the past are completely irrelevant. What matters is how he can produce in this setting.
And Jefferson is simply too good to trade away. Let’s revisit this deal when Jefferson is 25 years old, just as we have revisited the deals in which Joe Johnson and Chauncey Billups were traded away.
Brick, who coined the Herschel Walker analogy first, you or me? I want dibs!
Here’s the funny thing about Jackie McMullan’s comment about throwing history in Ainge’s face with the whole 32-year-old shooting-guard theory (a nice one, by the way): She seems to ignore the history of blockbuster trades that deliver world championships in organized sports. (Basketball especially.)
Name ONE NBA champion who got a title from a blockbuster trade? One. Shaq with the Heat and Rasheed with the Pistons weren’t blockbuster trades; they were the final piece to the puzzle.
The San Antonio Spurs, the Cadillac of NBA franchises, must be laughing their butts off right now. We’re still three players away from being able to take them on, sad to say.
Big_Easy said:

I hope it was clear that my joke was saying that the “we luv danny and wyc and the celtics are going to win six zillion titles with garnett pierce allen and 9 happy elves” sheep are the sheep who should be lucky that someone thoughtful and reasoned like Brick posts here even though he’s subjected to endless crap. Calling them “sheep” was the momentary abandonment of your very sage point about people on this board taking personal swipes, and I agree, doing so more out of humor. I think the overall attitude on Celticsblog towards those who have so-called “negative” opinions is disgraceful, and I admire Brick’s resiliance.

Nah, let’s flip for it. I only get emotional about laying claim to it cuz it really did completely alter my allegiance to the Vikings. Pretty much ruined it. It’s never been the same since. The Saints’ selling the farm for Ricky Williams almost killed that one, too, but once you’re a Saints fan you’re pretty much skrewed. LOL.
My comment wasn’t pointed at you, George, but thanks for the comments.
I understand that people essentially get frustrated at frustration, and it seems to call into question what it means to be a loyal fan and all that. But it boggles the mind how personal it gets in here.
I want to chime in on this briefly. The thing I have been getting annoyed by is Brick continuing to threaten to stop be a C’s fan, yet he continues to lurk here and post opposing comments just to ripple the waters. This is the best day for the C’s in recent history and he seems to feel the need to keep coming back (despite threats to the contrary) and piss all over everyone’s cornflakes. We get it Brick…you don’t like the trade, you wanted a youth movement, you wanted PP traded, you wanted Tiago Splitter in the draft, and if we did the moves Danny just pulled off, you’re never watching the C’s again and you’re turning into a Raptors fan. Well, none of what youwanted happened, so feel free to wander over to Raptorblog and day now. The same post over and over just gets old, ya know?

Herschel Walker analogy is ridiculous. In basketball you have 5 players on the court, usually a core of about 8 players make or break you. In football, Herschel didn’t play defense or special teams (unless a rare kick return), or kick field goals, or throw a pass.
A Lebron can do what he did against the Pistons, etc. If Peyton Manning has no line or receivers, or decent D, Colts aren’t going anywhere. If L. Tomilson of the Charges doesn’t have the rest of the crew he has, then it doesn’t matter how great a rusher he is, he’s on a 500 ball club.
Barry Bonds (steriods or no steriods) can be taken out of the game every night (100 walks) and he has to rely on the other 8 guys and pitching. A great pitcher only takes the hill every 4th or 5th game, useless when not on the mound.
The facts are the facts: we have a great chance to make the finals, we play in the JV East. We are legitimate NBA contenders: deal with it.

It’s not Pierce’s team or KG’s team; that’s silly thinking. All these guys want it a ring. All of the big 3 have been on 3 of the worst teams in recent years.
We will coast into the playoffs, that’s a given unless the sky falls in. And this team will go extremely deep in the playoffs.
Two years when the score was a point difference and less than 3 minutes in the game, all the Celtics watched Pierce go one against the world. It doesn’t matter whether Paul drives and makes a bucket. We dump it low to KG and let him hit the short jumper, or we kick it out to Allen for a three. All anybody wants at this point are Ws and a ring.

Big Easy said “Sheep is personal. Period.”
If you feel that this is a personal insult to you then maybe it is hitting a little too close to home. There are plenty of individuals on this site, you included it sounds like, that post a re-hashed version of what Brick just posted. Usually preceded with the phrase —You’re exactly right Brick—. Never a disagreement with a thought he has. Anyone calls his comments out as being wrong or not correct and they jump in with the post of —Well actually, Brick has a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight and is always right on with his comments… --Spoken in a Cliff Claven tone—-
For the record, I have often agreed with Brick. I think he makes a lot of great points when he sticks to basketball analysis and appreciate the things he adds most of the time. Every once in awhile he’s way off, but so are all of us…
