Eddie House Signed
The Celtics signed free agent guard Eddie House this afternoon to a one-year deal, apparently solving their need for a veteran backup to point guard Rajon Rondo.
He also reports:
The Celtics also signed Jackie Manuel, a 6-5 wing player who played for Los Angeles in the NBDL last season, and is considered a solid defensive player. He was named the ACC’s defensive player of the year two seasons ago while at North Carolina.
Next up in the free agent market is a big man. PJ Brown, the 37-year-old power forward who is reportedly seeking the full mid-level exception ($5.6 million) for his services, has probably priced himself out of the Celtics’ range.
The team is currently checking into the market for Dikembe Mutombo, who could fill in nicely as a backup behind Kendrick Perkins. Mutombo is currently in Africa, where he is on his annual mission at the head of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program.
So, Eddie House, Jackie Manuel, and Dikembe Mutumbo. Not exactly what a lot of fans were hoping for, but they do fill roles of need. House is a backup PG that can shoot. Manuel is a defensive wing. Mutumbo is a defensive 7 footer.
Update: There is a rumor going around that Ryan Gomes might get cut by the TWolves and sign back with the Celtics. Cross your fingers.

House fills the scoring-off-the-bench role. He’s strictly shoot-first. Had his best season with PHX in ‘04-’05 when he was asked to come off the bench and launch it.
Love his 3pt shooting accuracy. Not sure he’s going to be a true PG, but I guess if Danny and Doc want Ray Allen, Pierce and Garnett handling the ball, he’s the perfect fit for a jump shooter.

Bringing Gomes back would be heaven sent! We could have Big Baby or even Wallace spend time in the NBDL to grow their game.

Why would they cut Gomes? He’s too solid a player for that. If they hadn’t wanted to keep him, Minn wouldn’t have asked for him in the trade to start with.

Money, money changes everything.
This is the reality of tying up the money in 3 players and having the luxury tax towering over the team. We all need to focus our expectations at this level for the bench players – Sadly, it comes with the territory.
On the down side – the true veterans we’d all like are not interested in the money the C’s have to offer. On the plus side, Danny has a proven track record in the later rounds and should be able to overcome this.
In my estimation, based on the House signing, the Celts at this point truly want to spend what ever “real” money they have on a back up big man.
Overall though – I am not complaining, none of us should.

I believe the likelihood that Ryan Gomes would be cut is similar to the likelihood that the C’s could have gotten Garnett without giving up Jefferson… namely, remote. However, even if he was cut, I believe he would get far more on the open market than we would offer him given. His numbers are not that far from Nocioni’s though he’s a step below. Given that, I would rather him stay with the Wolves so that I can follow all the Celtic Kids on one team.

Thanks for the profile on Manuel. DraftExpress lists his best case as being like Tony Allen. Defensive specialist that can guard the 1-3. Like the signing, especially since he’ll be used as a defensive rotational player.

Guys, it’s not at all inconceivable that Gomes was added to make the deal work with Garnett’s trade kicker, but that Ainge has worked it out with McHale that he would get cut after the deal went thru and with Gomes agent that he would be re-signed.
Remember, when a player with a guaranteed contract gets waived, it’s a windfall: Gomes will make his guaranteed money, plus whatever he signs for. So, if Ainge impressed upon him that he is wanted but is just being traded on paper to make the deal work, and will be invited back immediately, and will also gain an extra million or so for it, I’m sure Gomes and his agent would be happy to play along.
Danny must just be in his glory today. Not only is he redeemed with the KG signing as a capper on the Allen move, he’s made the Celtics the (current) talk and toast of the NBA. And with the House signing (a good one I think if reports about his good defense are true; we know about his shooting), Ainge must be ecstatic as people sit back and see that he can, having accumulated assets for years, construct a team from stars down to supporting players.
Hope he feels as good about everything that’s happened this week as we all do. He’s weathered the storm and earned a moment to bask in its aftermath.

danny did speak glowingly of gomes at the press conference. not that he wouldn’t otherwise, but it seemed like overkill. maybe because he and mcchale had to throw him in the deal to make the money work?

Jackie Manuel sounds like a great pickup. He can’t cost much, has been paying his dues in the NBDL, and may be a good defensive back-up for Ray Allen or Pierce. Since Tony Allen can’t be relied upon to be ready at the beginning of the season (if ever) then getting a reasonable fascimile of him sounds like a shrewd move.
Gomes getting cut would explain us giving Minny Cash considerations.
What in the hell else would that be about?
by BlackCeltic on Aug 1, 2007 3:59 PM EDT reply actions
They were just saying on WEEI that there were cash considerations in the deal for Garnett and they were saying that it may have been to pay Hudson’s contract to bring him here…. But that doesn’t seem likely with the House signing. I wonder if it was to cover Gomes’ contract. That would make more sense.

Im glad we signed Eddie House. He’s a vet with a great shot…something that Rondo is not, and what i think makes him effective off the bench. And as for Ryan Gomes, it seems far fetched but i can hope..

Don’t bet the house with this recent signing.
by The Real Large James on Aug 1, 2007 4:06 PM EDT reply actions
House fills the need for a shoot-first, shoot-second, shoot-third, and pass fourth point guard. I doubt the big three will be excited about House being on the court with them….but he’s the polar opposite of Rondo. So they should complement each other.
Gomes coming back represents going a round further.
I can’t believe all this positive talk about House. Are you guy’s serious? yes, we need a player to back Rondo up, and yes it has to be cheap. But don’t drown in the kool aid. There’s a reason hes still on the market and still only got a one year contract.

By the way, I saw Jakcie Manuel play at UNC for four years and he is very bit the defensive stopper he is described to be. He is fairly long, a good athlete, and thrives at trying to stop the other team’s best player. Unfortunately, the description of his offense is also accurate. His shot is not very good and his handle is suspect (at least the last time I saw him) but he can slash to the basket. Being a Heel fan, I will be rooting big time for Jackie to play well.
I dont understand why we dont throw the vet min at Chris Webber, he is available and he is the type of big man we could definitly use. Somebody please explain why there are no C-Webb rumors.

As for Gomes, if he is cut (highly doubt it) I don’t think he can be signed by the Celtics per new league rules. I’d love to see him back on this team, but he would have the pick of the litter from contenders as he’s a great glue, role player.
Also, if he plays it out, he can still leave Minn at the end of the season as he’s in his last year.

Rest assured, House will probably get the ball only in our half-court, and if he has to shoot it. :) Don’t expect him to do any ‘playmaking’.
House averaged 16.53 minutes per game last season. In that span, he averaged taking 7.5 shots—3.1 of which were 3 pointers—and 1.2 assists. He did take good care of the ball, averaging just 0.5 turnovers per game, but it’s hard to turn the ball over when all you do is shoot it every time you touch it.
FWIW, I don’t dislike this trade. However, if the C’s were looking for a shooting/scoring backcourt player to come in off the bench, then I actually would’nt have minded them signing Troy Hudson. However, it is nice to have a lights out shooter coming in off the bench (shot 42.9% from 3 and 91.7% from the line last season). He’s going to get A LOT of open looks playing with guys like Pierce, Allen, and KG. Not a bad signing the more I think of it.

That rule put in the CBA after the Gary Payton trade-waive-resign actually doesn’t affect Gomes much:
Players who are traded and then waived by their new team cannot be re-signed by their original team for 30 days (during the season) or 20 days (in the offseason) following the trade
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#appendix
So Gomes just has to wait 20 days. Very shifty, but it kindof makes Gomes out to be a naive pawn. If the Celtics don’t want to spend much more money why would Gomes not sign with another team for their MLE (or part of it)?
by bullsblogger on Aug 1, 2007 4:30 PM EDT reply actions
I like the Eddie House signing. He’s going to look better next season than ever, with a lot of open looks. Pierce is always going to facilitate a lot of the offense in the half court, so House only has to swing the ball, and make the entry passes to K.G. He’s a decent defender and much better character than either Hudson or Knight. Besides I’m happy to save what’s left of our MLE money to resign Gomes (please come true.)

by coachenew on Aug 1, 2007 4:30 PM EDT reply actions
I like the House signing — gives our second unit some needed experience and offensive punch, gives us another 3pt shooter for late in games when we need it, and it’s just a one-year deal so we can always work towards something better next year.
The Gomes rumor makes zero sense to me, but it’d be great if he does come back.
Well, the rationale for the Celtics sending money to the Wolves to cover Gomes being cut may simply be this:
The Celtics have the MLE to use. Ryan was slated to earn a pittance this season, but probably would have made 4 million dollar per season on a re-up. The Celtics use the trade to send Gomes out, send money along to the Wolves so they can cut him. Then the Celtics resign Ryan, for around 2.5 – 3 million dollars per season, for . Ryan suddenly becomes 2.5 million dollars richer in the process this season, still gets his money that he would have had for the last year of his rookie contract, and that basically covers the money for the next 3 seasons of a 4 year deal at 2.5. Get it?
We were all talking about how the Celtics wouldn’t be able to afford to resign Gomes after this season. In this scenario they can manipulate the MLE, with the Wolves assistance, to do exactly that. If this is what is happening, then Danny made a very cunning move in this deal. Let’s hope that it is true.

Sounds like a pipe dream. Since you’re paying luxury tax on these money anyhow, it doesn’t matter whether you pay it this or next year. Plus, if Gomes is cut, whoever was willing to offer him MLE next season can do it right now, and he still gets more than he would with us. Nonsense, if you ask me.

Me too. Why would Gomes give up his free agency (when players make REAL money) just because Ainge choked up when talking about him?
by bullsblogger on Aug 1, 2007 5:00 PM EDT reply actions
I might be wrong, but I’m not sure Minny can simply make Gomes a FA, so he can resign here. i think they’d have to waive him, but come to think of it, wouldn’t we be the 2nd team in line to grab him (after Memphis who had a worse record). Chris Wallace better not screw us. Any one no better how waiving /releasing works?
Over on Real GM there was discussion that Ryan Gomes’ inclusion in the trade had to do with KG’s trade kicker. I don’t have the time to worry about the math, but they said that while the deal could have been done without him, KG’s trade kicker made it such that Ryan’s inclusion was beneficial.
I think the rules would be that the C’s would have to wait 20 days to sign him again. While it sounds fishy, I don’t think there is anything “wrong” with it.
NBA regulations say that KG can waive as much of his kicker as it is needed for the deal to work. Since this money was technically added to his extension he doesn’t lose it. Therefore, he could have theoretically waived all of his kicker; as I already mentioned, this deal works on the trade checker.
Of course, no-one really knows the exact numbers in those players’ contracts, so it is, more or less, a speculation.
I don’t want to talk about Gome anymore!!!! – we might jinx it!!!!
PJ Brown? please No
I am beginning to think Leon Master Po(we) who can rebound like crazy is going to get buried on the bench again down to the number 10 11 or 12th spot behaind Scali and some other big man old worn out “vet” who moves like Artis Gimore in 1987…something – that’s a bunch of craap if true
Gomes might just like living in new england, and want to continue doing so for a small discount. And if he knew this beforehand, he wouldn’t have any bitter feelings. not all (but certainly many) players are motivated by the highest bidder. Regardless, if minny waived him (or bought him out…cash considerations?) he’d be a free agent and we’d have to wait 20 days in the offseason or 30 in season to sign him.
Maybe for a championship ring or two? Better luck three years from now bullsblogger!
by The Walker Wiggle on Aug 1, 2007 5:18 PM EDT reply actions
How much cash did we give in the deal? Maybe it was Hudson’s buyout which conveniently started around the rumors of the KG to Boston deal.
We haven’t signed Hudson, instead took House – maybe somebody got the rumor wrong. Gomes is a local product with a lot of fan base and Minny couldn’t keep all the new players anyhow.
There was no Gomes and only Minny’s pick returned with the original 4 and then all of a sudden Gomes and cash and another first rounder were thrown in. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Celtics gave up the future first with such low restrictions (only top 3 protected vs top 10 or something) to get Gomes back because they didn’t want to throw in Rondo or likely Perkins (keep a starting 5) and Scals would’ve worked but then he’s got a contract that McHale didn’t want.
We’ll wait until the end of August and see – Chemistry is a big thing for this club and we still need some players to sustain it for as long as the big 3 are signed to max contracts. Gomes would be a good 6th man off the bench.
by desertgreen on Aug 1, 2007 5:21 PM EDT reply actions
Well Gomes would be nice but I hope it is not at the expense of a Big Man (5) to back up Perkins. I remember when the debate on this site was who should be traded Gomes or Jefferson. They are both Gone.(sic) yet I am happy with and support the trade not that it matters.

Larry Legend,
I completely agree about ignoring RealGM BS. And I would normally agree that the league wouldn’t want any double dipping regarding Gomes, BUT … Stern should be kissing Danny’s feet right now to bringing life to a dying (in terms of fan interest) league and creating much-needed positive buzz in a time of scandal and low ratings.
Eddie House is a decent defender and he can get the ball over half court. And if he’s open, he’ll drain the three. He’s a better fit for this team than Hudson or Knight.
You could put house in a second unit with Glenn Davis and let Davis play point forward.
I think the Gomes rumor is credible. It makes no basketball sense, but it did seem to me that Gomes was put in the deal at the last minute, and it may have been done to increase the permissible size of Garnett’s trade kicker.
The fly in the ointment is that there are plenty of teams with the full MLE who could use Gomes, who will be an unrestricted FA if waived. If Ainge was planning on resigning him for reasonable dollars, maybe he should not have been so effusive in his praise.
As I said in another post, it makes so much more sense for the Wolves to waive Eddie Griffin or Ratliff.
As for the big man, I would rather have Mutombo than PJ Brown. I would also have no problem with Marc Jackson if he hasn’t gotten too fat.
Eddie frikkin House? Wow, that’s boring after yesterday’s news. I was really hoping for BKnight.

by greendoc on Aug 1, 2007 6:04 PM EDT reply actions
It definitely makes sense- Gomes would obviously take up most of what is left of the MLE. House was a cheap signing that fills a need and allows Gomes to come back…then we can sign Mutombo for the vet minimum (or Kandi man…or whoever). Getting Gomes back would be so freakin’ awesome! I love love love the Garnett deal, but the late Gomes throw in (which maybe another clue he is coming back) left a sour taste in my mouth…
What about the possiblity that Danny and Kevin agreed (informally) that Minn. would trade Gomes back to Boston (for a predetermined player)?

I’m the first person to take a tinkle on the parade, but Eddie House for one year is a great pick up. There just isn’t much out there and we want to have guys on the roster who’ve actually played in the NBA and aren’t complete malcontents. If we’d signed Brevin Knight to three years or something, that would be something to be upset about.
As for Gomes, that sounds far fetched. Also, we really need to get ready for next off-season, when we’ll have a better idea of how far this team can go and where its weak spots are. We’re not going to win the title this year (or probably ever, but that’s another story). Doc is still our coach and these guys have never played a game together, let alone have played enough to develop that kind of unconscious sense of team that you need to win sixteen playoff games. So let them play together, get a sense of where we are, fire Doc, and sign up our extra-part players NEXT off-season.

by George Meyer on Aug 1, 2007 8:12 PM EDT reply actions
If the Timberwolves didn’t want Gomes, they didn’t have to insist on him; the trade worked without him. And if the Ce, the Celtics still had him, the could pay him whatever the going rate is after the season. This is all a convoluted pipe dream.
Thumbs up on Eddie House. The Celts needed some offense off the bench.
House wouldn’t have to worry a whole lot about getting the ball to the stars. He will rarely see time with them on the court. He is a great fit to come in with the second unit and be a credible scoring option that Rondo can’t be. Him and Big Baby, Powe, TA, and Wallace or Pruitt will have the ability to not give away leads when the others are resting. It also allows for a point to put in at the end of a close game where we need to hit free throws to win the game. Then Rondo can sit on the sideline and watch him.
Being down here in NC, Jackie Manuel will be a nice insurance contract for TA not making it back. He is a superb athlete and a hard nosed defender. Great cheap pick-up.
Although PJ Brown isn’t a bad player, he doesn’t really bring a whole lot to the team and we really need a backup center. Kandi or worse case Dikembe and we are at 14 contracts and done. Let the games begin!
Doc Rivers could help this team a whole lot more by suiting up playing back up PG minutes rather than coaching.
by George Meyer on Aug 1, 2007 8:32 PM EDT reply actions
Very interesting on the Gomes front. I wouldn’t bet the bank on that, but there is certainly precedent for Ainge to pull that kind of deal. I have no doubt that Ainge/McHale could work something like this out, and I do believe Ryan is a guy who enjoys the NE sports culture and likes being around (i.e., think a Bronson Arroyo type attitude).
I guess the million dollar question is did Minny insist on Gomes as part of the package or were they satisfied with Jefferson and the picks, and willing to help us out to get the deal done (along with Gomes interest in returning). If that is true, my bet is that everybody in the loop knows (Ainge, McHale, Gomes and agent), nobody else, and it can’t be even suggested until it actually happens.
by earl on Aug 1, 2007 8:35 PM EDT reply actions
I put no credence in Gomes being cut from Minny. I think Minny will struggle next season. I also think that McHale would be crucified for just letting Gomes go. Gomes is a very good 6th man, he has value. Why wouldn’t Minny at least get a late first round pick from some team for him?
If Gomes is back, knock me over with a feather, more fun for me than I deserve to have at this point. If and until it goes down though, just no way I put much weight in it.
House is a good pick up. Watch how our bench blossoms from here on out to the trade deadline. FA, disgruntled players will be falling over themselves to pay in C green. This will make Danny look like a genius; just like the Heat added depth several years ago, etc.

House is a good pick up, I have been thinking that the second unit could use a scoring punch, and he definately provides that. However, who knows what units we will see on the floor with Doc’s rotations.
I am a UNC fan and think that Manuel could be a great pick-up. He spent his whole college career being a defensive player surrounded by stars- Felton, May, both Williams’s- so this role shold be something familiar.
I also think PJ is out of his mind, FULL MLE… in the immortal words of GOB Bluth, “Come On!”

all due respect to ryan gomes, but i think we might be overvaluing the guy a bit. it would be nice to see him back, but either way he’s not gonna be much of a factor on how far we go this season

well, considering our “lack of depth” i think Gomes would be great off the bench. We have amazing talent but right now we are thin and proven role players would be a factor i think. With that said, this is just a rumor, not something we should bank on. but it would be big.

All in all, I think Minny is bummed out on losing KG, even though fans knew a move of some sort was needed. If McHale let’s go of Gomes for nothing, he will be ripped by every media/fan in the twin cities.
Minny has to cut 3 players, okay, but if you think Gomes doesn’t fit, someone out there is willing to give you a mid to late 1st rounder, and he’s worth at least a 2nd rounder to any team in this league.
Again, why would McHale just cut him outright; he should be fired on the spot if Minny ownership allowed this. David Stern is going to look at this as somebody jerking somebody’s chain too if Gomes is cut and winds up here.
Not saying I wouldn’t be happy if it played out this way, just makes absolutely no sense from a basketball perspective.

If Gomes got cut, why wouldn’t another team just claim him on waivers? Who wouldn’t want a guy like that for $700k? It makes very little sense.[/quote]
If he’s placed on waivers, Boston can claim him ahead of anyone except Memphis, no? And I suspect he’s worth a lot more to Boston than to Memphis – already knows the system and players, is a good fit in New England, etc. Does Memphis have a roster spot open?
Although it does seem like an odd move for Boston, tripling Gomes’s price, basically. If he was going to be cut anyway and was just being included to make salaries work, why not put Powe and Allan Ray (who they could have re-upped for the purpose) into the deal for Minnesota to cut instead? That certainly argues in favor of Minnesota keeping him.

I can’t imagine how Eddie House is a good pick-up. He’s an undersized shooting guard who CANNOT play the point effectively. So here’s another guy who can’t guard a chair. The Nets saw enough of him after just one year.

i think he can handle the point for limited minutes…considering we’ll have at least one all star on the floor who is a playmaker. But maybe we are pursuing Hudson afterall. Hudson as the backup and House comming in the game at the pg or sg to knock down some shots makes sense. We don’t have much scoring off the bench.

Absolutely. Pierce has shown time and again he’s not to be trusted dribbling too far from the basket. Allen is no point guard sub. The C’s still need someone to run the team when Rondo is resting or ineffective. That someone is not Eddie House, and I can’t imagine anyone believes Gabe Pruitt is that guy either.

I looked at the Timberwolves web page big Al has number 25. They have 17 players and 8 of them are guards and 7 of them are Celtics not counting 3 number 1 Celtic picks past and future. I would think Minnesota will keep Gomes because they need front court help. If he was on the Celtics he would probably play 30 minutes a game and be our backup 3 and 4. He did give us so much verstality. I think he was the key player to keep.
I look forward to more analysis of the present but KG for Al, Gomes, Green and 2 number 1’s will be talked about for years.
