Just read the SI article with Russell – it is a great article. It made me laugh and reflect way back then. In my humble opinion the greatest player in Celtic history is also a great man among men.

Long live Bill Russell

Peace

That RealGM article by Dennis Silva was so stupid. That’s obviously a guy that has something against the Celtics. I’d be interested to see what kind of things he wrote about the team 3-4 months ago, because I’d be willing to bet he never before spoke of Gerald Green as a “stud”, and I’m sure he bashed the Telfair/Ratliff trade to no end. But now that they’re gone, they’re these great pieces to the puzzle??? Gimme a break. And he says that the Celtis have a 2-3 yr window (I disagree), but I don’t see the Spurs as having much longer of a window, so it’s kind of a moot point when you’re talking about the Spurs being the “team to beat”.

I knew I’d be heartbroken to see Al Jeff leave Boston, but never realized how sad I’d be to see Ryan go, too. Every time I read about what a standup guy he is, it reminds me how much sweeter it is to be a fan when you know the guys you’re cheering for deserve it as human beings. I’m so optimistic about this season, but still wish we could get those two and Delonte back, some day.

FLCeltsFan,
I really enjoy your site. Just one question—where does the name Loy’s Place come from?

by Cousin It on Aug 21, 2007 10:23 AM EDT reply actions

Thanks Cousin It, LOY’s Place comes from Loyalist who started Celtics Green message boards and then LOY’s Place as an extension of the boards. I just kind of fell into writing there. :D

It’s amazing how many great Celtics blogs are out there, how many people devote so much time to writing about the team. I love all the different approaches and angles. That 10 Things site is a good one, too. Anyway, thanks as usual for the links!

On thi article…“RealGM Spurs still lead the race by far”

AS our nemesis Peter Vecsey said once during on a Celticstuff show: When you have Tim Duncan, you are so far ahea of the curve….

Whom ever wrote the article might be a “vanwagoneer” Spurs fan, lets see how he does when TD is no longer there, and the franchise is moving because they can’t draw fans

I figured with several responses to the “links” section, people must have had something to say about that dude with the Spurs. If we are considered 5th in the east, then I guess we really aren’t getting much respect. Too bad they can’t use the Patriots way of thinking and use that to their advantage…

Agreed, Po, Great SI article on Bill Rusell. You can see how Red and he got along so well. Both men have an eye for detail and are extremely competitive. In thinking about Russell, I recall him publicly supporting Muhammd Ali’s deicision to refuse reporting for military service during the Vietnam conflict. Russell, along with Abdul-Jabar, Jim Brown and others, stood in solidarity with Ali as Ali went to prison instead of reporting for military service. Does this make Russell a traitor or, by extension anti-American in the way Iowa claims Etan Thomas is?

Now GG is ‘stud’ wing and Telfair just needs some time to blossom? That’s funny.

I’ve been a longtime Spurs fan (they’re my Western Conference favorite) since back in the ABA days of Ice Gervin, James Silas, Johnnie Moore (The C’s would kill for a point guard like him), Paultz, Kenon and the gang. They have had a solid franchise through the years and have usually fielded a competitive team pre-TD. I have little doubt they will continue to do so post-TD. One reason is the quality of ownership and management. Their basketball people continue to make great decisions – like drafting what should have been a top ten guy (Tiago Splitter) at the end of the first round.

The C’s have a chance this year but they also have a lot to prove before they can be considered among the league’s elite teams. Not one of the top teams has a point guard situation as iffy as the C’s, and you go nowhere in the NBA without good play at the point. It’s no secret the bench is highly suspect as well.

Could the Celtics win the East? Sure, if a lot of things go their way. I just can’t see them as favorites yet. Chicago probably, Detroit, Cleveland, Miami (especially if they get Artest and/or Bibby) for starters will be very strong. And I wouldn’t expect the Raptors to be back-sliding.
