C's Looking at Patterson, Posey, and Jones
The Celtics must now resume their search for bench help, with one looming possibility said to be Ruben Patterson, a defensively-tough free agent swingman who played for the Bucks last season.
The Celtics are also reportedly considering Dahntay Jones, the Memphis swingman who the Celtics originally drafted with the 20th pick of the 2003 draft as part of their eventual deal for Marcus Banks, and Miami swingman James Posey.
Posey is still negotiating to return to the Heat.
Patterson we've heard about. Posey makes a lot of sense. Jones is a new one on me. I know that at times he's been called a point guard, but he seems like more of a shooting guard or even small forward.
Regardless, without needing to hold a spot for Reggie Miller, the team can sign a small forward and still have room for a point guard if they cut Manuel or Wallace in camp. Did I mention the fact that I want them to sign a point guard? Just checking.

Yes please a backup point guard. Preferably without a rap sheet. All we really need is someone to spell rhondo and offer a little stability in the playoffs. A good passer, good defender who can drive the lane and occasionly hit the spot up jumper. Please no Jones,Payton,Patterson,Sura,Sarunas,Hudson. We need the X factor.
Wow, where’d you hear Jones get called a point guard? I watched his career at Duke and he was strictly a 2 or 3 (in fact, almost exclusively a 3). I can’t even imagine him being called a PG.
He’s a solid defender and very athletic. Had a poor jump shot in college. Don’t know what it’s like these days.

From the Celtics prospective we need a deal. I don’t know the exact figures on the cap but i thought we were hitting the luxary tax threshold.(assist here). D Jones I believe will command more than I would want to pay. I would tryout Jason Williams and Annothy Johnson. Cap numbers are tight from here onward.

Dahntay Jones absolutely cannot play the point at the NBA level. For a wing he has a horrendous handle, terrible passing skills and cannot shoot to save his life. This is why he has yet to find a niche in the league. The only thing keeping him around is his athleticism which allows him to matchup with skilled wings around the league in a pinch. He’s be a cheap one-year option fighting for minutes with Tony Allen……it’s called throwing sh*t against the wall and seeing if something sticks. Not a terrible idea until next summers FA class.

If Patterson has his head screwed on right, I’d chose him; if not I’d take Posey. I’ll pass on D. Jones.

This team needs two things really. A veteran PG as insurance for Rondo, and a banging big man that can rebound and defend the post. We could use a defensive wing player since PP and Ray A are older, and not particularly good defensively. Tony Allen could be that player, but with his knee a question mark, we don’t know for sure. However, I think an Anthony Johnson or Troy Hudson make the most sense as they would be cheap, and 1 year rentals. The cap is not friendly for the C’s right now.

Jones couldn’t play for the lonely Grizzlies last year. No Deal & he is strickly a “3”.
Patterson got too much RAP.
Johnson too inconsistent.
I’m very concerned about TA’s remarks of being only 65% healed, it seems to me that he should be 80% or better by now.
I’m leaning towards Sarunas as the best PG option right now. Wait for roster cuts to add the “3”.
No love for Posey around here, but I think he would be a great fit. He’s an energy guy and as Doc likes to say “energy is a skill” . Plus, he brings a bit of edge on the court (just ask Chicago) and is not afraid to be a little chippy. He can back up PP at the 3, and even play some 4 in a small ball lineup since he’s a pretty darn good rebounder. Unlike Patterson, he can shoot the 3. If the owners are willing to pay, it would be a very nice signing.
