Good Auerbachian article. No doubt, the man was a genius and set the standard for both coaching and assembling talent … but even he admitted that managing a team is much harder now due to salary/trade rules, vulturous agents, player egos, the lottery, the sheer size of the league, etc. Ainge has a tough job.
That Eddie Griffin story is tough. 25 years old.

On the Auerbach article, his drafting of Dave Cowens was another great one. I don’t know what pick Cowens was, but it gave us a cornerstone for 10-12 years. If I remember correctly he went to see Cowens play and left very early as if he had no interest. He may have made some statements also. As to Bird I also remember him saying that he didn’t think Bird would be as good as he was. He said he didn’t realize what was on the inside (heart).
This man was a genius and I think his story tells us there are no sure things and that you can’t know how a player will turn out after you draft him. Danny revered Red and sought out his council alot, especially when he was in better health. He talked to Red about the first Antoine deal and Red said, at first, that he (DA) was crazy. By the time they hung up the phone DA had convinced Red it was a good move.
